This is alittle thing that really spoiled me and kept everything on my phone nice and organized. When i had the moto droid and i was using bugless beast pete came up with a script that when you turned the phone it would automatically overclock your phone and the phone its self would adjust its self according to the situation. I dont really like using set cpu and would love to see a developer integrate something like this into our roms.
Maybe it could turn into a popsicle when you turned it? Sounds like something you would be into.
no....its just one of those things that made a rom feel alot more complete and run smoother. It just seems like every so often i have to reopen set cpu because android closed it

Why was this post even necessary? Just seems spiteful. To the OP, that was a nice feature, one less process in the startup and background running.
That script did nothing that setcpu will not.
And before you say, well setcpu makes my phone unstable--a script like that would do the same.

Its necessary because everyone wants things handed to them on a silver platter. You can't have everything done for you.
A script to automatically overclock..want me to flash the rom for you too?

So suggestions on how to improve a ROM are really just lazyness on the part of the person who thought of it?
Could have provided a simple explanation instead of being a jerk about it.
No wonder XDA gets the reputation that it does with Posts like that.

There are already apps readily available in the app market that do that.
Regardless of all the arguing, this is in the wrong section.

Did you read the OPs post? He mentioned setcpu in it. Why would I direct him when he already knows it exists?
Ive never had to deal with so many jackass's in my life. If you dont like the idea keep your mouth shut. I was just thinking maybe some of you people would appreciate something like this for your phone. As for set cpu....i swear every hour android is killing that process. Dont worry i wont ever suggest anything again if this is the bull**** im gonna get thrown at me.
Yea, I was going to suggest that you ask on irc... But who cares what I think...
Maybe I'm stupid, but what would be the point of having your phone overclock when turned?
Maybe you could try excluding SetCPU from your task killer? I don't run a task killer and the setcpu service has been running for the last 36 hours....
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I dont use a task killer either. Maybe its cause im not using a widget?
I think you're getting flamed because that's exactly what setcpu does. Not sure why it gets killed for you though.
How do you know it is being killed? You know there are more tasks running than the last 6 that the viewer shows, right?
You realize that the system will automatically clock up/down depending on system load. The only reason you'd need setcpu if you're running an OC kernel is if you wanted to run at max speed all the time. If that were the case, you'd kill your battery because you'd be running at the highest voltage level constantly. This script that you want sounds useless for our devices.

I am new to the forum, and I just bought a new G1 off craigslist tonight. ($150, new in box, with two protective cases). Why should I root and modify it? What are the benefits? What will I be able to do that I can't do right now? Links?
Thank you very much. I appreciate it.
EDIT: Oh, I should have said that I am not looking for another hobby or technological fun (I get plenty of that!). I just need to know what I have to gain before I dig in. Thanks.
If you have to ask that, just don't bother.

My reply is perfectly valid.. If you don't even know why you want root, what's the point..? Just be happy with what you've got.
Do a search for "Root" and just read.
Tethering (use your 3g connection on your laptop)
Apps to SD (the g1 only has a few megabytes of memory for apps/games, so you can use a lot more)
Eclair(live wallpapers, more features)
Multitouch(if your used to the iphone/ipod touch)
Hero/Sense (to get a different android experience)
SPEED! (some roms like superd/fastTest/CSDI are fast as hell!)
Themes (so you can make your phone look any way you want (pink notification bars ftw))
Thats about it.

Really, if you aren't looking for something you need to put a lot of work into, rooting and modifying your device probably isn't for you. Unless you want to be left with outdated and obsolete features. There are a lot of things about rooting that you really should keep up with. And if you can't make the commitment to it, it's probably best to just skip this.
But like I said before, you can do it now, forget about everything else and just keep outdated and obsolete features.
THANKS! It is a beautiful thing when a person chooses to be helpful and kind. I appreciate it.
I guess apps to the SD and the increased speed are the only two things that I would be interested in.
If the phone memory fills up, will anything else I install automatically go the the 2gb sim card?
I do not have a data plan and plan on just connecting to home and work wi-fi networks when I need to access the Internet. Will moding the G1 help with anything wi-fi related?

Don't get too interested. Due to the G1's slow processor, most multi-touch will be more like.. a bad synonym that I can't think of. Upgrading to the Nexus last week from this device.. was worth it.

That's basically what I meant, but with more words.
Well, after a couple days of using the phone and downloading productivity apps and games that I think I will use on a regular basis, I only have 10MB of space left on the phone. So, it looks like I will be rooting/modding out of necessity.

Well, it's over a year old, and something in the Android world is pretty much outdated after a few weeks
But here is some other reasons:
1) Not sure about this. Although, i'm pretty sure i remember using a multi-touch gallery a while ago.
2) I'm not sure why you'd want that anyway, it's pretty pointless. Also, that's only true for the home screen. There are apps on the marketplace that have 180° rotation. Cyanogen has also built in 180° rotation into his Nexus ROM so it could be possible on the G1.
3) I have no idea what the author means by this. Saving apps to your SDcard only means you can potentially install thousands of apps because they get saved to the SDcard instead of the phone. Also, i believe you can move the CACHE to the sdcard now too.
4) Downloading themes is very easy and incredibly simple to do now with Metamorph. It's pretty hard to 'soft-brick' your phone with this.
5) Not true at all. Everything is explained in very detailed tutorials. The only way you can mess up the Linux commands is if you can't read. Obviously, having a knowledge of Linux is very handy.
6) The firmware we have on our phones are MILES better than anything T-mobile releases, purely because devs get the OTA, mod it, and release something awesome, usually, the same day. Oh, you'd also lose root if you flashed one of these OTA's.
I'm not blaming the author of that thread at all, It's just things have improved ten fold since this time last year
Cyanogen has his 180 degree rotation in his newest Donut ROM (if you even really want it?)
If you use nandroid, there's never a reason to worry about a soft-brick. I nandroid every other day actually. Flashing something or not.
Finally, the person who got me into rooting was still running cyanogen 4.0.4 about a month ago and still loved it. you don't have to be "dedicated." of course, you'll be lacking some features you might find useful if you never update, but you'll still always be on top of a stock phone.
And, yes, meltus' famous louder volume hack. (If it wasn't for this I never would have been up for work with my mytouch alarm.)
Apps2sd - get a bigger sdcard. I have an 8gig class 6. payed 18 dollars for it on ebay (with free shipping) got it in 3 days. and yes, apps2sd might not free up your internal storage because of cache and all that.... but: it lets you install more apps. and: there are apps the clear your cache. you can even set it to clear periodically (mines clears every 24 hours.)
yes: I would suggest rooting, but I would also suggest that you read VERY closely and learn wtf to do before you ever even try.
Can someone look into why connections get lost so much? I am constantly losing my connection for no reason. I am almost 100% certain it's a phone issue, with some software running on it or something. If anyone'd be willing to try to figure this out, please let me know. Thanks.
This is about as specific as
"My car won't start, what's wrong with it?"
We're gonna need more info then that.

Well hopefully this give you just a tad bit of insight but I am running Regaw 2.1 with autokill but no setcpu as his Rom currently doesnt support it (lacking kernel for OC) I have tried pretty much all of the others but yet sit find that Regaws is by far the fastest I have used, even without OC or Jit. I have not experienced any reception issues at all. Current PRL is 60665 & PRI is 2.20_003
Maybe try getting rid of setcpu as is it doing nothing worth while for you.
Also, I have found that using autokiller and setting it to strict, animations to all as well DL'ing spare parts and setting animations to fast really bring this thing to life... I swear in a side by side i was actually moving faster then both an evo and an incredible.
hope it helps.

It seems the phone is not able to take a picture while it is in a call. I am not sure if this is normal for Android or just the SGS. If possible, it would be great if the option was made available. I don't use this feature a lot but there are times when you want to be able to do that.

Someone wrote that popup. They wrote it for a reason. My guess is that the phone.apk and the camera.apk are too RAM hungry, or other-resource hungry to run well together.
I love both of the apps. They're the best I've seen for either on Android yet. I'd like to see them work together at the same time, but there's no one in my life who wouldn't let me call them right back after I take a pic or two.
Maybe if you're calling 911 and trying to catch what you're reporting, but that's why I have a camera in my glovebox all the time. I'd recommend it (just in case you're flashing a ROM while driving and it didn't get a chance to boot up....)

That happened to me the other day: I was riding the motorcycle down the interstate and I put my sandwich down so I could change lanes, as I was merging I wiped and flashed CM6 on my Vibrant and this lady ran me off the bridge. By the time I swam to shore she was driving away and I was stuck in a boot loop and couldn't take a picture of her plate. I was so upset I finished eating my sandwich and swam home.

Too lazy to get up. I will test with BT in the morning.
See? I knew someone would have a situation!
That's one that'll keep me chuckling into tomorrow.
BTW, I tried it with bluetooth. Nada. I still get the error with the OEM camera app. Camera Magic is my alternate. It's lightweight.
Glad you got out of that one safely.
Ok, so I was going a lot of playing around with my phone last night. On the scale of hacking, I am not even in the same realm as the skilled folks here. I tinker with things now and then... and sometimes I get ideas... like now.
So, my EVO is setup to work with my corp exchange server for work emails. I noticed that under Settings / Security / Select Device Administrators, the exchange security policy is in there. This section also seems to suggest that you can "add / remove" but it appears to only allow removal from the UI.
Then I got to some more thinking... an app essentially installed itself and granted itself this right. Why cant we study what that app is doing a do something similar? Or at a minimum, exploit those very roles that are already there on the device?
Am I even thinking along the right lines? Or am I way off?
Makes sense to me but I'm also a novice but good contribution dude. Maybe it could get the ball rolling on this thing.

heck yeah, cause it's long overdue. You even mention 2.2 root in here, and you get barked at like you're in "The Village" and that is "the thing of which we don't speak." LOL
Well, frankly, it's the only reason I check XDA daily: to see if someone finally rooted 2.2, so like it or not, it's gonna be what many people are waiting for....
So, way to go on the idea. This at least gives hope that we are still looking for an exploit.

Come on, you know that's not true. The reason people get crap for asking about rooting 2.2 is that the info and answers are all already here on the front pages.
But I like that people are still thinking and suggesting like the OP. That's how things are going to keep moving.
Side note: My Evo just spell-corrected "crap" to "veal." It was like an Easter egg or something.

So... thanks for the chime-ins on the idea. I thought it was a good one too. I am curious now to see what one of the big hackers has to say about it. Knowing my luck, it would be a squashed dream.

Just had an idea ( warning I am a noob.) So the previews exploit was found by running flash. If any developer can create an app and install the old flash to allow the old exploit. Then this will allow us to flash.

Not to burst your bubble or anything, but I'm pretty sure this is mostly related to corporate security so that IT can lock the phone down even more than carriers/manufacturers do. Think stuff like not being able to install apps, email restrictions, password management, etc.
Breaking this security feature will at most give you the access non-corporate users enjoy with their unrooted phones.
I'm sure there are plenty of dev's looking for exploits on a daily basis. No need to get peoples hopes up early is why there isn't much talk about it. Same reason people get dumped on for asking on a daily basis. If there was one found already it would be posted so quit asking sort of issue.
I like the thoughts though.

To further derail this thread, this "easter egg" is actually a feature from Google, the reasoning being that is probably better to send a nonsensical word over a swear word in case you didn't actually mean to write the swear word.

Still derailing I understand what your saying as you are probably correct, its just funny how they related crap to veal...as you know lots of people don't approve of veal, so the code writer must be one of them...there are so many different words they could have chosen..just funny that's all! Done with the derail, back on this exhausted topic

Sorry... I hate to be off topic, but this sparked a memory. I was sending my wife a txt a couple weeks ago and I can't remember the word I was typing, but it was definitely a legitimate word--no reason for Android to mess with it anyway. It effectively turned that word into "gay"...go figure.
Like sk63 said, that just relates to the Exchange admin role. Nothing to do with root access on the device.

You know I noticed that the other day when I sending a text and thought the same thing.. I couldn't figure out how spelling crap was even close to the spelling of veal! So yes I think it was on purpose too! I wonder how many other 'Easter eggs" are programmed into this phone......where is the root egg...hehe....

OK -
V is to the right of C
E is to the left of R
A is the same as A
L is left under P
I hope this puts an end to this veal crap!
ok, back to topic
So, for the point about exchange administration... I am aware of what it is used for... since I myself am a user of it. My point was that it has administrative power over the phone since it can perform a wipe (among other highly privileged tasks)... so the idea was to try and use that system somehow to exploit.
I also liked the thinking behind installing old flash. That is at least a good question. One that I would love to hear the answer to.

Wow! So (1) we aren't allowed to make any kind of new thread about 2.2 and rooting and (2) we can't share ideas about possible exploits, at least not in your presence.
I gotta say, kick me, kill me, put me on probation, but you are truly one GIANT ASS. Who put you on that high horse? What an Asshole. Hey, what prompted you to open this thread? Was it to review some interesting literature tied to an intriguing title, or did you open it knowing full well when you clicked that you were going to scroll to the bottom and post the most close-minded, rude, obtrusive comment you could think of?

just being able to run ad blocker for games is enough reason for me
I think this all boils down to 2 things:
1) patience
2) intentions
You have to read up and study about rooting. Even though geniuses here and in other places have made it so relatively easy, no amount of relative ease will help someone who isn't detail-oriented, logical and methodical.
But the 2nd bit, intentions, is even more important. Rooting for its own sake is just stupid. In my case, I needed it for a reason never necessary for my old Touch Pro: roaming. On the TP, all I needed to do was install a CAB file. On Android and Sprint, root access was needed. All the other things I can do while rooted are just gravy. Mighty delicious and addicting gravy, but nevertheless gravy. ^_^

While I agree with the post, I am not sure you read it, it doesn't exactly agree with what you, it just talks about why people who aren't tech-savvy shouldn't do something that could potentially brick their phone just to do it.

I did read it. And I payed attention. Lol. What I meant to say was, that this is one of the reasons I haven't rooted, I'm not good enough with pc's to do it. And even if I did manage to root succesfully, I wouldn't dare try flashing things and such. I'm all for making this phone better, but only with the things I'm comfortable with. When I upgrade to another phone in the future, I might start messin with this one for the experience, then I might do it on my current phone, whatever it may be.

I personally don't *need* root. It does make a few things possible that I find useful, such as a permanent minfree mod, being able to store a few pictures in the system space for use as homescreen icons that don't take forever to show up after the phone boots, and actually replacing system apps with upgrades rather than taking up space on my data partition. I could easily survive without those things.
I completely agree that there are people that should not root, should not run custom roms, etc., and I see them regularly here and elsewhere. Much like that article says, they are not (necessarily) stupid, they just don't have the proper mindset.
When I see people posting things like "I don't see update.zip, I just see update" I cringe and start thinking that there should be a computer competency exam necessary to allow even the minimal "hacking" involved in things like rooting and roms.

+1 on the part about benchmarks. Maybe my usage is just minimal and simplistic compared to those who do it, but I just cannot understand why people benchmark phones (except maybe for graphical benchmarks to see what gaming performance might be like) or try to overclock from 1ghz to 1.2 or even 1.4 ghz. I just don't understand exactly what the point is, when the phone is (generally) fast enough to begin with.
Because you can.........

Why buy a sports car? I mean a Corolla is fast enough for most use. Why get a 6 core desktop with 32gigabytes of RAM?
The real question is: If you want it then why not?

I've helped plenty of people out who had no idea what they were doing now they edit xmls and smali on the regular. What some people need is a one on one in something like an irc so they can be reassured after each step and after the first round of flashing their comfort level and confidence greatly improve. To most people with these phones this is the first time they ever did any computer related mods in their life but they don't necessarily need to wrote off as to dumb to root

Well I kind of understand what you're saying, but I don't really agree with your analogies. The car one is harder to fit because a lot of people buy sports cars for the look or the name, or whatever other features here and there that the Corrolla may not have. Even still, driving habits, location and so may other factors play into whether to get a sports car or a cheap sedan like the Corolla.
Overclocking your phone doesn't really compare because we're talking about taking what we already have (Corolla, sports car, or otherwise) and then modifying it for what is usally a minimum increase in performance. If your car has a 300 hp engine and you upgrade it to 350 hp, but don't drive it any differently than when you had 300 hp, what was the point of upgrading it?
And idk who has 32gb of RAM for regular desktop use, but most people who overclock their PC's can see a finite, tangible increase in performance. I'm on syndicaterom 1.1.0 which can scale up to 1.3 ghz. However, I would never notice the difference between 1 ghz and 1.3 ghz because 1 ghz is already more than fast enough for all of the things I do on my phone, and more than likely for the things that most, if not all people do on their phones. Most of the time, it seems like it's more for the theory and bragging rights. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I just don't see why people overclock and then benchmark their phones for non-gaming applications. To each his own I suppose.
Um. Tethering mostly. And also titanium backup.
Ill be it. I'm NOT a computer genius but imnot an idiot. I can root and whatever just fine and things work out eventually. So that's good. Still want to do ec05 and genocide 1.0 though... but yeah..

Lol, did he really say this should be stickied on every android forum here?? Oh no he didn't! That's like telling every Puerto rican that his Stock Honda Civic is fine the way it is, lol. Is that not what this forum is all about?? This is XDA Developers right? This is about developing new ideas for these devices that we feel are needed, wanted, or just for fun. These devices are capable of so much more than just stock gives us and we are here to unlock those possibilties. Guess what, a lot of these depend on root, or gaining Superuser permissions. The guy who wrote the arcticle sounded to me like he was just tired of noobs not paying attention or studying before the exam.
The rooting process really can't get any easier. If you could read instructions, download a file and find a button on your keyboard you can root. The problems are caused after you take the wheel of the rooted device and aren't educated enough on how to drive it after you turn off autopilot! But that's why these wonderful forums are here right?

You have no idea how many times I have had to bite my tongue on this forum... like the kids these days sayin 'no homo', they might as well add 'yes homophobe'. that and the 1488's in usernames... I just try to keep my mouth shut (completely contradictory to my nature) unless someone is using that ignorance in a way that needs to be addressed. The above statement is such, even if you are puerto rican, nobody knows that here on the interwebs... so you could be reinforcing racism in one of the impressionable kids here, when the only impression that should be made is a boot on the racists head.

Well here is the thing..the article mentions the Thunderbolt..and HTC is stepping it up taking things more annoying...for us though we got Odin, which is pretty good and simple at being a backup tool...
If a user is inexperienced and is afraid to mess up I just point them to EB13 tool and then update.zip to EC05 and they are back to normal...
That said out of curiosity..has anyone ever bricked their epic rooting? I mean I know on other phones rooting can brick...but I'v heard many people messing up and never heard of anyone bricking...but maybe I missed something...anyone see someone brick just by rooting?
Spot on

Good reply Dreams, thats how i feel live and learn.
I have walked many people through rooting the epic the first time.
Now they are more advanced, and the community is better for it.
