I did the rooting process, but I'm not sure if it worked. I have the Superuser Permissions app if that counts for anything, which I have read means that I did root it correctly but I just want to double check.
Try downloading terminal emulator and type in "su" and if that box comes out of allow of don't allow click allow and u know if ur rooted

Ok I downloaded it typed su then it said allow or deny and i allowed, so I am rooted?
just to clarify, if youre gonna use Terminal to check Root run Terminal, allow permission, and type SU as Javi97100 states.... now if in Terminal it shows # sign after entering SU, then you have root.
i do believe however, if "Superuser Permissions" is in the apps list Root has been achieved

Great thanks. What would you recommend now, I flashed before but I didn't do it right I think. Should I try flashing again and what do I do before hand.

Why don't you think you did it right? Do you see the "superuser permissions" app in the app drawer/list? When you type "su" in the terminal emulator do you get a hash mark (#) instead of a $?
I think maybe he's talking about flashing a custom rom.

Ok and after that all it is is flashing with which ever ROM I choose and if I don't like it I can just restore with the nandroid backup up and it'll be like nothing happened right?

Alright im kinda of new to the mytouch 4g scene. However im have a good understanding of what is going on,just not with the 4g lol.here's my problem I bought this phone off ebay and I went to root it and it said already rooted. I get all super user permission even after turning phone of on and off. When I go to check if s is off it is on? What's going on is this phone only temp rooted? It seems like your already perm rooted. But, s off is required for u to flash custom roms.

How did you push the root file? I'm stuck on the same thing!
PostaHTC I see you made alot of posts I am guessing you just did TempROOT and you didn't invokes the sh command. Did you download the root.sh? If so after TempROOT to get PermROOT from console type in sh <file> make sure you have root dir under /sdcard
I've done it step by step and still nothing I just got it out the box 2days ago so I just did a hard reset I'm just waiting on someone to tell me what I am doing wrong

Well since you are up to the PermROOT I take it you have TempROOT, if so as you saying you have root.sh in root dir inside /sdcard so it would look like /sdcard/root/root.sh for the absolute path. Also you have console right? If not go download Terminal Emulator. Then type in "su" and press enter SU=Super User or @wheel,root permission base. Then use "cd /sdcard/root" press enter CD = Change Directory. Then do "sh root.sh" and press enter as sh is shall execute command. So it would look like this below:
su
cd /sdcard/root
sh root.sh
Now just do restart and make sure you have S=OFF as you will see it on top in HBoot screen. When you are back on go open Visionary+ and unclick TempROOT on boot and click TempROOT now. Then look below and click on Attempt PermROOT Now.

I have everything I need the files and all...I have the files on the SD Card not the root folder When I turn it off it is still saying S-On
Well in that case from console type in
su
mkdir /sdcard/root
mv /sdcard/root.sh /sdcard/root/
cd /sdcard/root
sh root.sh
If you don't want to do it manually then you can do it easily via FileExp go use Astro or Root Explorer. From what you are saying I have my money on you didn't properly do TempROOT. I say go do TempROOT again then try what I suggested for PermROOT.

The superuser app will give you a pop-up and ask for permission. You can set some apps to always have permission, and you can revoke whenever you want through the superuser app. The app is in addition to the binary that actually gives su rights.
Superuser asks permission even for adb from the terminal, so I think it's pretty good protection.
You also get a notification bar or toast message every time an app gets granted su rights.
I don't feel unsafe on my rooted phone.

As I observe in my unrooted Nexus S, su comes pre-installed in Nexus S. Unlike Samsung captivate (unrooted) where, if you run su on adb shell, you get 'command not found', in the Nexus S, I received the message 'Permission denied'
Su is not pre installed in the nexus s. If it where then it would be no need to install it as part of the root process.

Hi everyone,
I have a MT4G, 2.2.1, kernel 2.6.32.21-g899d047. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit.
I want to root the phone but I am meeting a lot of permission issues.

At the very beginning, I had problems with su and Superuser.apk.
I have used 'adb devices' to check that my phone is indeed detected.
I put su and Superuser.apk into the same directory as
When I use 'adb push su /sdcard/su', I receive an error saying 'Failed to copy 'su' to '/sdcard/su': Permission denied. Same error for Superuser.apk.
I looked further down the guide and noticed that I would not actually be using the su and Superuser.apk at all and simply copied it over to the SD card itself when I plug the phone into my computer.
I then go into terminal emulator on the phone and I run rage and received the 'Forked #### childs' message, after which I reset term.
I assume I have root shell at this point because I am no longer on $, but instead on #.
At this point, I am able to adb push gfree (the one file gfree) into /data/local. I am able chmod 777 from adb.
When I go into terminal emulator again, I run '/data/local/gfree -f' but it gives me the error message of '/data/local/gfree: permission denied'
What am I doing wrong? I used 'ls -l' inside the directory of /data/local and I have complete rights for gfree (drwxrwxrwx).

I have also attempted to use VISIONary+ (R14) but all it does is flash a couple of times then go back to the app page where you choose to temproot. I check my app drawer and Superuser is indeed there, but if I tried to go into terminal, I am met with $. I tried entering 'su' but it would say unknown user root.

As mentioned in OP, I am using the rage file to give me temporary root. I am currently not using VISIONary because (also included in OP) I am not getting root shell at all with VISIONary. I click temproot in VISIONary and the superuser app shows up but I am unable to su in Terminal.
Try to find visionary 11, people have alot of problems with 14.

Having trouble at step 1..
'adb push gfree /data/local'
Met with the error 'Failed to copy 'gfree' to '/data/local/gfree': Is a directory'
I extracted the files into platform-tools.
Didn't you already put gfree on your phone from the first attempt?

Yes but I was attempting to follow a whole new guide. Regardless, I have shell root but I am still unable to run gfree. It still shows permission denied (again, using ls -l, I can see that gfree is drwxrwxrwx).
Use visionary 11. I have rooted 4 MT4G's with that guide and visionary 11...It works.
before you attempt a new rooting method please pull the battery and let the phone sit for a few moments. Since your s-on it will delete any unwanted files that you may of tried to push to the phone.
and type in

That will refresh the adb server on your computer.
you'll also need to change the directory to the folder where you stored the gfree files.

Yeah, I'm using visionary 11. Still no good.
Are you checking the boxes in visionary and clicking temproot? I don't know what the issue could be...you must be missing something.

Tried with those settings and now I've lost root shell. I'm on $ and entering su gives me unknown user root.
VISIONary says device is rooted when I try to run it again.
I would check the root on boot, reboot, uncheck it, go into terminal and put in the su command and see what happens...your phone will be really laggy when you boot it up, so give it a minute, it is normal.

Do i uncheck and then reboot or just uncheck and go straight into terminal?
check everything including the root on boot. Reboot the phone. Then you can go straight into terminal or uncheck it and go into terminal..doesn't matter. Just make sure before you reboot a second time that root on boot is not checked.

1.Backup older Gmaps,Street View then wipe data & Uninstalled both.
2.When I gonna install New GMaps app in the end of installation it show "application not installed"
3.Reboot device & try to install,still getting same result!

Our on the right path so far.. But the way I've always used adb I kinda dragged everything to the tools folder...I have the library and everything else there...try putting it on our tools folder and see what happens if not check the platform tools.. Just drop the map apk and try it out.

I tried,but remount was not successful.Remount permission faild.Show"ADB remountperation faild".Why is this?I've rooted & s-off my device.Also

Hmm.. even root explorer.. that's strange you mean mount R/W to R/O in root explorer..
from my end i first did c:\androidsdk then was able to adb push etc...what i could suggest is wait for the signed version.. am on samsung galaxy t989, am at work, i can't really access nothing right now to check with you...i have my mytouch 4g at home...i know you have root access because you said you were able to backup and uninstall using titanium backup.. so i guess you have root access...but try the mount r/w to r/o and see what happens...

You can make the system r/w.

2. Busybox is a great tool for rooted users. It basically give you more linux / Unix based commands that you normally don't have access to. If you Google busybox you can find more info...

It can mount system folder!Now I can copy apps!Yahooooo!Ah!I've set permission to this Gmaps app & rebooted device.But it is still not visible.But it is in system/app folder How I make this visible/install?
