Im using stock rom with android 2.2
I heard that the newer radios that comes with 1.72 update gives better signal strength and battery performance.
Just wondering, will there be any issues if I continue using an old rom, and flashed to new radios (like the 1.72 ones, and future radios)?
Thanks

just take note of your current radio, after you flash the new one, if there is any issues (which i dont think they will be) you can always flash back to the one you had before

just so you know in case you don't know, there is some problems with the rom and as of right now (unless i'm mistaken) there is now way to take the rom off.
And with the new possibility of rooting i saw wait for rooting your eris or just get the nexus one
The Rom works fine.
There are NO major issues with rom version 0.2 or 0.3.
And if your phone is rooted, you will probably find a new 1.5 ROM on her soon based on the original stock. So you can flash a new ROM. Assuming you are talking about the rooted 2.1 and not the leaked one.
Well with all the hype going on about custom (and sometimes stock) firmwares. I thought I would start a discussion and Perhaps a poll to see if you are using stock or custom ROMs.
As for my 2 cents: Samsung makes great hardware (at least to my experience) but sinks it down to sleep with the fishies with poor software support including bad very bad software suites (like Kies or Media studio the latter which installed a nasty rootkit on my laptop believe it or not for DRM), prematurely axing support to its newly launched devices (I remember hacking my samsung MP3 with korean firmware as I was really angry at samsung for axing the device 2 months after its release whats up with that ).
So what about you: Do u use custom ROMs or stick to late to almost never released stock ROMs?
Stock rom.
It does what I want. Internet-games-programs. It is fast and good.
I do not see a reason to go with a custom rom.
I use modaco. because its sooooo fast.
Overcome. Hands down the best rom/kernel IMHO.

okay ... dumb question ... i've just ordered a Tab from T-Mobile, should have it Monday or Tuesday, so ... just what is a custom ROM/Kernal going to do for me?
Thanks,
pat----
Im sticking with stock atm...
As posted above, it does what i want.
Im on Overcome 1.3, undervolted, not overclocked
what it does for you is it removes bloatware, includes fixes to known bugs that samsung has not addressed with a proper firmware update, allows for overclocking and undervolting if you're into that, formats the file system to EXT4 making IO faster, installs a full backup and restore facility from recovery, and provides better battery life*
quadrant score from original firmware: 1000-1200
quadrant score from Overcome 1.3 no overclock: 1690
so yeah, custom IS better than stock until samsung gets all these tweaks into their official ROMs.
(*I don't know how it does that, but it does )
It should be said that in reality the split isn't just between stock and custom, but stock, "unreleased', and custom.
Most of the custom ROMs you can find here are based on Samsung's own unreleased test/dev builds (e.g. MoDaCo is based on JMI, Overcome is based on JMK). Even in their "raw" form, these unreleased ROMs are far better than those that actually ship on the device (BEWARE LOCKED BOOTLOADERS IF YOU ARE THINKING OF FLASHING ONE!!!).
If you take say Rotohammers build, it is stock JMI (JMK now?), without the locked bootloaders and pre-rooted. MoDaCo and Overcome go quite a bit further as they have completely rebuilt kernels and are tweaked for speed. Then you have Technomancers Gingerbread ROM, which is completely custom and based on CM7 rather than an existing Samsung build.
In my opinion, staying on a shipping Tab ROM means you are not getting as much out of your device as you could. Even the Samsung unreleased dev builds are way better than the shipping ROMs, so I don't know why Samsung haven't actually formally released them.

Dave
I user overcome 1.4.4
Its much faster than the stock rom and seems to use less battery power in my particular use case.
Custom, as indicated in my signature. I have a T-Mobile Tab and in stock form, it was extremely slow. It sucked.
chicken roms is better ever
For those who say stock is fine i say you have no idea what you are missing. Try both, then make a decision. Custom all the way baby!
T-Mobile tab running latest Overcome
As a bell mobility tab user, i used the stock one (jj3) i think for about a month.
After that i decided to go with roto jme then jmg and after that went to modaco.
Was on modaco for about the last 3 months and i have decided to flash overcome.
There is a significant speed difference between modaco and overcome. I noticed lag in angry birds seasons with modaco but with overcome, barely any.
I am happy with flashing a custom Rom and would never go back to stock.
If only i could get a copy of the stock Rom just in case of any issues.
Hope that helps.

The hardware is superb but it's let down badly by Samsung in not keeping it up to date with firmwares.
Using Custom roms solves this and provides an all round quality tablet so, yeah, custom roms for me.
I use a stock rom for now, but once my download for Overcome is done, I'll switch to it.

Read the guides before flashing.
I had stock. It was excellent, good multi-language support, excellent hardware support.
Tried MoDaCo. Lost most of language support. Hardware support only for the basic stuff.
Replaced with Overcome. Language support even sketchier. Battery performance awful. Hardware support still only basic stuff.
Tried going back to stock. I could not find the stock firmware that was originally available on the device. All «stock» firmwares in the wild had the same issues as the MoDaCo and Overcome. I was shocked and seriously puzzled!
Went to the repair shop and asked them to flash the device with the original.
- Two days later I was told, that they need some special cable to flash the device, and it's going to take a week to get it from Korea(!).
- One week later I was told, that the device needed motherboard replacement.
- One more week later I got the device.
Now my device has Excellent language support, but still fails to report Neighbouring GSM Cells.
Eventually I installed a Winblows in a VM (Bleh!) to try Kies.
To my greatest surprise after eventually connecting Kies says that my device is 'Not Upgradeable'.
So my adventure with custom firmwares is MOST unfortunate.
My ¢2: new users should NOT replace firmware unless they BADLY need something that SUPPOSEDLY a custom firmware would give.

Can you please elaborate more what do you mean by "hardware support", what would be the difference between "basic stuff" and "excellent"?
AFAIK, the custom ROMS are based on stock ROM, thus I can't understand there will be any difference over hardware support level.
With custom ROMs you are more free!

I did. I ended up installing Rotohammer's instead, though. It works fine.

Hi Chaps, I'm considering switching builds to the current Typhoon nand rom, I'm currently on the old M-DeeJay nand Rom for those of you with long memories, and for the most part it's been very stable. Unfortunately just recently I've been having issues and have decided to have a fresh install.
Reading through the last 60 pages or so of the typhoon rom, it seems like the ROM has become somewhat unstable with the latest versions, with data dropping out, batteries being drained etc
I've experienced no real issues like this with my current Rom (no issues that I can't solve), are these real problems for typhoons rom at the minute that I should wait to see fixed, or is it a case of user error and I'm fine to go for it?
I've never used cwm, so haven't flashed nightlies, I prefer to find a Rom that works and stick with it rather than risk screwing up my phone
Also - just how improved are current roms over ones that were cooked up around christmas time?
The other ROM I considered was the Dorimanx one, it seems to be just a little too tweaked for my liking
current cm7 roms have android 2.3.5 base. instead of them you can use roms with android 2.3.4 base (which are stable).i typhoon rom op there are old rom download links.i'm not sure but version 3.4.1 is said to be very stable.
best stable rom i ever tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905060
and fast ...
thanks chaps - now running typhoon 3.4.1
best rom with sense is Android 2.2.1 Sense 2.0 NAND Firmware (based on stock Desire HD RUU Ace 1.84) by Mikhei777
I cant speak for non Tmobile HD2 devices. But for the TMobile version this ROM is the fastest, cleanest, and most stable I have used. I have been using it for almost a year. So far have not run into any issues especially once I switched to the CLK version. [OCT16] AmeriCanAndroid AOSP HD2 GB2.3.7 CM7 | bk2sdext [KERNEL:ACA823]
Hello Co galaxy3'ers
When I bought a G3, I was far from satisfied with the GPS performance. After upgrading to Froyo, this dissatisfaction was quickly away.
Now I'v flashed a custom ROM many times , and some of these custom ROMs, GPS performance was poor or even completely absent in some ROMs I was satisfied with the GPS performance.
I have to say that I only tested without mobile data disabled because I have a mobile dataplan on my parents subscription (calls and sms are free but mobile data is very expensive but i don't use mobile data because there is always an open hotspot in my area )
Now I want to know wich ROM you have flashed and how you find the GPS performance (how many satellites the phone can find and the number of fixed satellites and how fast you get a fix )
If you know your previous ROM it would be nice if you also told me
So maybe i can make a list of roms with good gps performance
Thanks in advance

I'v tried almost every setting in the GPSetup2 on the custom roms with a bad GPS performance as well every app like Octy's GPSbooster, fasterfix or gpsessentials
I want to know which custom rom has a good gps performance and what the previous rom was (sometimes its better to flash a new custom rom over a specific Stock/custom rom)
On the Kyrillos' Rom 7.0, with the fix provided, the test went on fast and smoothly. When it came to use the gps deeper in the city centre, well.. It took about 10 minutes to fix make it work. But it's rather phone than rom issue. I've play around GPSsetup2 for a while as well, and it didn't help much. As far as I tried the Kyrillos' rom and that fix worked the best for me, but still far from what I might expected

Thanks for your reply
Largely the poor GPS performance is hardware-related, but I noticed that the GPS performance vary by custom ROM (I tested always on the same place en with a clear sky ).
Do you remember what rom you used before you flashed kyrillos 7.0 ?
Well, I'm not really sure, but as far as I remember it was Kyrillos' 6.0 To be exact, after 6.0 (with that one the gps performance was really poor btw) I flashed to stock JPS (in which I couldn't make it work at all, then again my sat-nav had some problems too, so I'm not really sure if it was rom's fault), then to Kyrillos' 7.0.. Oh, and then there was Indroid, the present version, and gps worked quite good, but not better than 7.0. And still, I like the Kyrillos' rom better
I'm not sure if that's the best rom for gps usage, but i works the best for me. I was thinking of experimenting with the older version of roms, but I decided I'm happy with what I currently have

Thanks such an answer I was looking for
Myself i experimented to with many different roms and once (i don't know but it was a stock rom ) i get a fix in less than 3 seconds in my room on a cloudy day and after that I'm searching for the rom and combination of previous rom with the best gps perfomance
Glad I helped To sum up- stock JPS flashed to Kyrillos' 7.0 worked the best for me

So, here's my answer. I'm using GreenMods POX 1.5 and after doing that fasterfix and GPSetup2 thing that I linked, I can't say that I'm having a great GPS performance, but it simply works. My main GPS use is for RunKeeper app, and I usually get a fix in about 1-2 minutes, and then it just works well. The same goes for Google Navigation (I tried once).
Before that, I was using 2.1 stock ROM (for Spain, I don't know exactly which stock ROM was) and after installing GPSbooster I usually had a fix in less than a minute. So, better performance than without GPSbooster.
To sum up: 2.1 stock ROM better performance with GPSbooster, and better performance than GreenMods POX 1.5 with fasterfix and GPSeup2. Never tried any 2.2 stock ROM
p.s.: GPSbooster didn't work so well with GrennMods than with 2.1 stock ROM, and that's why I tried fasterfix.

When i discovered the world of flashing and rooting i never flashed a stock 2.1 or 2.2 rom again (only for roms that require a stock rom where you have to flash a certain rom over
But the GPS works on certain stock roms much better than on a custom rom but who wants a stock rom with nothing else than slowliness and boring looks and its so bad that some stock roms with a good gps performance have after customization a much less gps performance
Will all of the custom ROMs in this forum work with the new OTA update? Or will we need to wait for the ROMs to be updated for 4.1.2 before flashing?

my understanding is that the custom ROMs would be replacements - not necessarily additions to a certain ROM. that being said, I think there is a new kernel update (reason for the improved WiFi connectivity), so there could be problems if you flash an older custom ROM over the new update.
I'm hoping that some of the developers will be issuing an update to their ROMs - but we'll just have to wait and see. I'm in no rush though, no sense in turning a gourmet chef into a short order cook.
