Thanks to you all. - Fascinate General

Im relatively new to android and honestly have learned a lot through trial and error. I got a warranty replacement today bc my incall speaker was having issues. So I decided it was time to update to DL09. The directions for install and rooting on here were flawless. Its nice to know there are people out there doing this basically for the common good. Plus it gives me something to do when my wife goes to bed early. So thanks i appreciate it.

Glad to see that xda has helped another android newcomer. Happy Modding!

Keep Coming Back...

I find myself constantly refreshing the android dev forum, scouring thru developers websites, and stalking their twitter pages, looking for an update to the latest ROM. I almost never use my vibrant for what it is anymore...a phone! This website has ruined me. I spend my whole day pressing F5 over and over and over. Flashing, reflashing, flashing, reflashing, ERROR, ODIN, flashing, reflashing. Im sick, i need help. I can see it now....FOX news reporting "Kids trying new drug...street name "XDA"." Its a massacre.
haha jk

I want to agree with everyone's elses comments on here. I feel like all the other people on this subject. Looking for the next best ROM for the phone. Always trying to make it better.
"hi my name is all ~g1, and yes, yes ... I am an addict!" :tear:
Now that the froyo storm has passed & R12 is in the recalibration stage I think, or at least I hope, I'll keep the staking down by half. I'm happy, for now.
Waiting patiently for 2.3 nexus $ release... Lol.
Yes I'm in this boat as well. My wife keeps yelling at me to put the damn phone down. She even complained to her therapist about my flash addiction!

haha true. but my friends dont know **** about technical stuff and most of them just have messaging phones (LG Vu, Sharp FX, blah blah) so if i try to explain anything about my phone to them there like clueless haha. And im not even going to bother talking to people who have an iphone. I wonder that spell they are put under when they buy that phone so that no matter what, they think there phone is 100x better than anyone else's when its not lol. but this isnt a iphone bashing thread so ill leave it at that.

lol this is also what's happening to me today! especially the froyo roms are on the hype today. when i wake up the very first thing that i will do is to look if there's an update on the development section.
Hi my name is 12paq.
I have been modding hard since my Pocket PC days. I have increased to 8-10 hours a day since getting my Vibrant and trying flashing for the first time. Don't blame Odin or Rom Manager, they are just delivery devices.
My wife has left me, my daughter won't talk to me and my dog left me for another dude. (Sounds like all Country music).
I refuse to believe I have a problem. It is everyone else that has a problem!
Now back to reading XDA. Tonight I'm mixing it with top shelf Gin for extra buzz. Now leave me alone!

Xda was like crack for me (I love crack ) back when I had my g1. It was awful, hours and hours each day, up all night. I was so burnt out I was actually relieved to get the mytouch 3g and keep it stock, I finally realized how great android just is, of course I flashed update zips early but I didn't modify it, I finally rooted my nexus to try 720 which completely blew but that's it I love my vibrant and I want froyo bad but these threads are the same as they were back with my g1, there's always an issue, there just isn't any rom as stable as stock, the ones that are close are basically stock anyway so what's the point? Faster maybe, but not as stable. Anytime I check a rom thread people are asking for help, that crap has helped me stay on the wagon. If there was a froyo zip for unroored vibrants though, I'd jump on it...

Hate too pull you off the wagon but T-Moble and Sammy aren't known for their well vetted bug free updates. The ones on XDA seem better supported. Many fans here of many Froyo updates. Just wait and don't be the first to try the first version unless you want to play beta tester, a good cause too.
I'm using Tmo stock 2.2 fro Eugene with Klang kernel and it rocks with far less bugs then any crud official. You see the complaints here way more then the successes.
Come on... try it... I dare ya... just once you'll like it...
This **** spreads too. I got one of my friends hooked on flashing custom roms to his old WinMo phone and he's now followed my footsteps and picked up a Vibrant because of how much he loves to play with the new roms I flash every week. I have another friend who's on AT&T who has been following the Captivate forum so he is now wanting to get one so that he can try the xda drug for himself. Haha!

Dissapointed by the vibrant

I have had the vibrant for a couple of months now, and I must say I am very dissapointed.
I had the chance to try my friends' evo and another friends mytouch 4g and I must say these phones are about 10 times better rhan the vibrant...
No lag, gps works amazingly fast and accurate 9.8 ft accurancy indoors on the evo with 8 sats locked. These phones just work right out of the box. The vibrant is a hyped up phone with very little usability because most times I need something really quick the phone decides to crawl and doesn't respond. Build quality is also better on the mentioned phones. Even my other friends htc aria performs faster and better in every aspect and that on 2.1...
Hopefully someone will solve these issues at some point cause it seems to me it is all software related cause on the spec sheet the vibrant looks to be a great device but in real life it is just a lot of frustration...
This is definitely my last Samsung phone and as soon as I get my hands on a used mytouch 4g I will gladly get rid of the vibrant.

quit whining.
You don't like your Vibrant, great. Leave the forum and stop complaining about it. You can sell it, smash it, trade it, whatever. We don't care. The majority of us are happy with the Vibrant.
Now lets be nice. We havent a reason to be rude. He is unhappy and has a right to be. We dont have to respond to the thread.
I am for one happy with my phone. Gps works! awesome software by teamwhiskey!
Great glasstopia them by mwbehr. Fantastic kernel by the man himself eugene373.
I already learned I dont need samsungs support. Maybe we can help him learn that also.
Well what a friendly community this is...
I felt like venting because using this phone is frustrating. I posted in the general section so if that was wrong let the mods take care of it but don't act like an idiot.
My vibrant is rooted and on official ka6. Rooting has nothing to do with the performance of the device.
Besides a phone should work the right way out of the box without any modification. If you say you are happy then good for you, but you might want to try using other phones and you will clearly see the difference...
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I didnt mean to come off rude, I was giving you the solution man.
I have MANY phones. Rooting doesnt help the performance... but apps that need root access do. And yes, voodoo (converting the file system to EXT 4) WILL fix your complaint.
Hazzard99 thank you for the reply. You are absolutely right and that is why I said it must all be software related since the hardware seems like it is supposed to beat pretty much any device out there.
I am fine with rooting and I did it, I just do not feel comfortable to flash any custom firmware yet...
I am more frustrated with samsung than anything else. I think android is the future definitely and it is growing daily... but Samsung lost me as a customer, that is for sure.

I'm sorry, aren't a ton of the threads in this forum dedicated to people's complaints with sammy/tmo/vibrant? Not a whole lot of us are satisfied with the Vibrant stock. Maybe we can educate him just how simple it is to root this device and put it's fantastic hardware to use.
Can you imagine what we'd miss out on if Sombionix or Eugene were basically told to piss off when they first picked up an Android phone and wanted it to do more?
Cut the guy some slack is all I'm sayin.

I will be flashing a custom rom and kernel but I think before that I will do a little more reading. I wish I could do more so that Samsung actually hears my and many other peoples complaints.

I understand that the stock version of the phone is truly laggy, and the gps is not that great. But they are many roms or "custom firmwares" that u can flash. They will make ur phone nearly 100x better. Flashing is defnitely worth it. If ur brave enough, you can even add on the ffc.
Dont be scared you dont have to do much but flash the rom of your choice and read up on it a bit.
One of the little pleasures of life Is taking pride in the things that we do for ourselves. I am very grateful for the community everytime I meet someone who has a certain phone and hates it. I let them know that the phone isnt that bad.
Oh and btw I run bionix v and I can underclock to 800mhz and be happy as a pig in poop.
And also we let samsung have it. they got railed via facebook and twitter about how unhappy people were. Tust me they know!!!

Yeah I was scared about f-ing my phone up but with some reading and some trail and error I've learned that without tthe dev community I would truly hate and more then likely would have broke this phone out or frustration. Wait till you get a whiskey or axura or eugene or the other guys.(sorry I just don't know the developer name but they so trigger and couple others) you will be floored. I know I am
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Well guys thanks for your input. I will have to do some more reading and definitely some flashing (this just sounds weird)
One question though. Would flashing eugenes kernel but remaining with stock ka6 fix the lag on this device?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Dont flash that!!!!!
Not cause its bad or anything.. but it could possibly erase your sd card and mess with your internal memory if you dont watch out
You are warned
Got it. I will stay away for now.
Thank you!

Amazing!...now what?

I recently purchased a brand new htc G2 and it is amazing. I can see why people develop for it; the potential coming from this thing is absolutely phenomenal.
I know what I want to do to this phone but I don't know where to go to and who and what to read up on. Cyanogen mod came up so much and I read up on a lot of his stuff but all seemed so complicated due to me just starting to figure out all this stuff.
I would love to know where to start out with this thing so that my g2 would be the best g2 for me. Any recommendations as to what to do to it, read up on or easiest way to understand rooting and how to do it?
Also I was thinking about what widgets and wallpapers u guys can suggest for convenience use. It would be much appreciated
Thank you

Welcome to the fold and prepare to be impressed with your new phone.
Read, read, and read.
And when you think you got it? Read again. Rooting is fantastic, but can get hairy. So make sure you are 100% comfortable. But have fun unlocking the full potential of your phone!

I rooted a few days ago and used the process at theunlockr.com it was pretty easy to follow the instructions cause there was also video to go along with them. Probably took about an hour to do and was well worth it. Check it out.

Pretty much use this and then download ROM manager, search Cyanagonmod 7, and you're good to go. You'll learn from there.

Uhmm, you're gonna build an auto-root for the Xoom?!
I'm the proud owner of a rooted Droid running UD7, and have rooted friends' Droids, too. But STILL, I read the instruction in the root Xoom "how-to" in the dev forum, and I can't for the life of me figure it out enough to have any confidence what so ever while trying it!
-It's the same thing as when root came out for the Droid; there's the "know wtf it all means" crowd getting pelted with redundant Qs from us "can't figure it out" guys!
-So what's the usual donation for this?
I'd probably use one instead of ADB.
alright, so who wants to test it out?

Just curious, do you have a xoom to test it on ??
Honestly, I'm afraid to go first.
I would assume this is for Xoom 3G and not Wifi only?
Someone point me towards a good backup program for unrooted Xooms so I can backup all my apps and configs and I'll go first
keep in mind that the wifi and 3g xooms appear to be different when it comes to rooting...

Its not a bad thing to learn ;-) and its really not that difficult to use adb.. people are just so damn lazy in this day and age.. its like "what I have to type something?!?! I can't just click something?" Lol god you younger people would have flipped if all you had was dos when you were a kid like me. Hell back then everything was on 5 1/4 floppy disks Lol
I'm taking classes (I'm 35) and the professor asked the class if anyone remembered before there was an internet.. 3 people raised their hands.. lol so if people now a days can't remember when there was no internet its almost impossible to think people know what it was like before windows, when everything was command based.. me I'd much rather type I to a prompt then click a button

Gosh, thanks for that.
I do remember DOS. I also remember when my school got the new TRS80s during my sophomore year. I remember learning BASIC.
I also remember having to sell my prized posession, a beautiful Fender bass, to pay my rent because my landscaping job wasn't paying me well enough. Thank God I found the part time job shoveling **** at that horse farm. It wasn't so bad because it's cool at night.
Nuttin' like shovelin' **** for five hours after a 10 hour day baking in the sunshine smashing your finger all to hell building rock walls.
What I DON'T seem to remember are any times when I had a spare thousand bucks to set fire to.
Now from all that you might gather that I'm just some dumb ass laborer with no need to even HAVE a Xoom, let alone root the thing, but I'm not. I've hacked my Canon cameras, my K1m, my Droid, and now I want to take my Xoom to its limits.
What I DON'T wanna do is turn it into a friggin paperwieght for my desk (...yes, years later I now work at a desk).
I agree with you that there are a lot of lazy folks these days, and being 8 years your senior, I've witnessed this regression more so than yourself. However, I don't think "lazy" is nearly as accurate as "fearful" is for the true description of folks here looking for a sure-fire way to root with the least amount of possibility of catastophic failure.
Sorry for the rant, but this has always been an issue for me from guys that share your perspective on this.

Isn't it funny......

So my wife and I got our epics at the same time last october. I rooted and was flashing roms within days. She had absolutely had no interest in letting me do it to her phone because she felt there was no need for it. Well ever since the ec05 update she has been having major performance problems: battery life, lag, freezing. I flashed srf 1.1.1 and put touchwiz4 on my phone this morning. When I got home this evening I was showing her some of the features and how smooth it was running. So she finally let me do my "magic". After a little bit of flashing, tweaking, and restoring I handed her back her phone. She was competely impressed. I just wish she'd listen to me more often. Now I don't have to listen to her say "I should have gotten the Evo" anymore.
Just a thought I'd share.

Ha! After having all sorts of issues trying to pry my GF's moment from her to Mod, I took the easy root and kept her EVO until I modded it!
Anyways, after an unlocking, installing recovery and a ROM, did a NAND backup and gave her the phone, and she remained clueless on how much it was modded.
End result was a phone she loved, with incredible performance!
Before she got it, she used to gripe about how awesome her friend's EVO was, now her friend always asks how she got her phone to do this or that!
I upgraded two daughters to the Epic last week and the BB rep noted that my wife was the only one left on the account without an Epic. I told him that giving her an Epic would be like putting a monkey in a spaceship... but I mean that in the nicest possible way.
She is the only one in the family that feels a cell phone restricts her life and carries it just to shut me up. Doesn't answer it. Just carries it.
LOL I'm glad my gf knows that stock is a dirty word. Mainly because she had a moment before and I put mrwrx 2.2 on it and she loved it... for about a month then I got her a free epic from best buy but before I gave it to here I put srf 1.1.1 with journaling on and now she loves android more than ios
