[Q] Switch to WP7 or stay on Android - HD2 Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting an

Hello
My dilemma is the following
I currently have Android via Nand and its setup as I like it, but more importantly its setup how my little one likes it. Its got loads of games on it that she plays and was one of the main reasons for switching to Android.
Now I have got a Windows license key and am all ready to go to WP7 but wonder if its the right move.
With current troubles with WP7 I'm reading and the need for kids games should I stay on Android or move to WP7?
Don't really want to go dual boot.

Games on WP7 are expensive. Something to keep in mind.

Thanks for taking to the time to do poll and reply.
Stopped me from put wp7 on, will wait and see what people think tomorrow.
Ian

That and there really aren't too many wp7 games. The android market has been around longer.
Swyped from my Evo on steroids.

Why don't you want to dual boot? Then you can try out wp7 and still have android on your phone. I'm dual-booting and it works great... both OS's are smooth and fast. Getting decent battery life with wp7 and great battery life with android (3-6ma on standby... sometimes as low as 2ma). That's what makes the HD2 special.... you can boot multiple OS's on it.

You have some great points, perhaps I should rethink.
Does anyone else have experience of dual booting both.

If you want games than WP7 is your choice for sure. The selection may be not that great in numbers and there is no Angry Birds yet, but the quality is overwhelming. I'm playing The Harvest for 3 days now and still can't believe this is a mobile game

I took WP7 for a spin for 4 days and I absolutely loved it. Smooth as silk after the initial install and activation. Had a few minor problems like the phone locking after a sync with Zune but this was known and I belifve that there is a fix available.
So, that was really the good side. My take on it is that there are relatively few (few in comparison to other OS) apps. My biggest concern was tethering while being away on a business trip but I could not find a way to do it.
So although I went back to Android, all in all I think WP7 is great. It just needs time to mature in terms of the home brew offerings and Marketplace apps.
Good luck.

I absolutely loved Android, but after using wp7 since it was out I can't use Android again, I will switch back but then flash wp7 before the day was over. Wp7 is great for its silky smooth UI and speed, GPS works instantly...and it looked funny running Android with a windows start button lol joke.

Until I use Windows 7, Android was very fast and preferred OS for me.I like the speed and quality of WP7. But Its too early to choose because lack of application's availablityin WP7.Android has thosands of apps meanwhil WP7 has not many apps.I will decide to use which OS in 6-9 months.until then I will use dual boot(WP7 and Android)WE HD2 OWNERS HAVE ALWAYS 2 OS ON THE PHONE THAT IS WHY HTC CALLED THIS HANDSET HD------- 2(2 OS)that is the speciality of HTC HD2

I have wp7 & android. I find myself using wp7 80% of the time, because of the snappiness. I switch to android only when I need to take a picture or use apps that wp7 doesn't have.

I tried several Android roms both sd and NAND even a few ram versions however once I used the win7 I loved it. True there's not as many apps and games but how many do you actually use? I lost pandora but gained Netflix and found alternatives to pandora. The ui is awesom on win7 ,smooth ,nice hd resolution ,great FB and gps I'm in with the win7 now just sitting back and waiting on updates.

If WP7 could give you even the slightest bit of Multi Tasking, perhaps allow three apps to be held in ram
If the camera worked OK under low light flash conditions
Gsensor needs fixing as its 10 degrees out when playing games like Need for speed
And there needs to be a few more very important apps available.
All of these will be sorted via XDA or Microsoft, fingers crossed for the first point.
OK Android may be slower and feel a bit old fashioned and clunky, but its app market is brimming like the Apple one, multitasking seems to work better, although never as good as WM6.5
Any issues with cameras for me totally destroy the whole build, this is why I waited to go over to Android until they eventually sorted the camera issues, with WP7 the camera is annoying as its brilliant ok slightly greenish in daylight but use a flash and the thing cant focus and totally green blurs the whole image.
I could even just about cope with out multitasking, shame as you cant even have resco radio running while you do other things.
Please get these things sorted because WP7 blows all the other UI's out the water with:
GPS fix instant and accurate
Keyboard wonderful
UI fast, fun and interesting
Games are unbelievable
Calendar is quick and simple to use
Office, even better than WM version
Sound quality is outstanding
Don't mention dual booting to me, can you imaging your in a meeting, my choice of UI would be WP7 for its quick calendar and super fast and brilliant office application, then comes the point for a quick snap of what we are discussing, before the fast passed meeting fly's onwards, "errrr hold on everyone while I boot up Android so I can take an indoor picture of this product"...

LOL ... 'retard' moment

WP7 Vs Android Vs WinMo 6.5

Which do you prefer and why>?
For me:
1. WinMo 6.5
2. Android
3. WP7
What do other users experience suggest>?
i prefer wp7 because the it unlocks 16m color of the screen
instead of winmo and android that works with only 256k colors
android
wm655
wp7
First off, personal opinion, winmo 6.5 is a PoS. It doesnt even make the list for me.
I love android through and through. I'm a big supporter of open source.
However, Since it has never been perfect on the HD2, (GPS is never right for me, signal loss, random other mishaps), WP7 is the best choice for me on the HD2 hardware. If Android was native on the device, and not everything had to be slapped on there Half-ass like, Android would be the only choice for me.
In WP7, the first unofficial pre-release from DFT is amazing. All my data is working (gprs, 3G, and HSDPA), GPS is EXTREMELY ACCURATE and very fast, the interface is simple and bliss. storage is somewhat of an issue atm but that will be dealt with, and the camera isnt focussing right. Those two things are the only problems that i have found so far. Call volume is also great, and speaker works.
The app market for WP7 needs a lot of work. The basics i got, Seesmic, Foursquare, TWiT. But it hasnt been out for long at all, and apps will come.
If you can tell me any different, id be flabbergasted.
Here is a short vid of my WP7 experience.

Can anyone confirm this?
Haven't tried WP7 yet,but my findings so far with WinMo6.5 and Android....
WinMo will remain my main OS on the HD2 as it does what I want when I want it,
Android is great fun to use especially all the handy Apps and games, but
it frustrates me as equally as it entertains, particularly the lack of ability to
change the MAC code to the same one I have on WinMo.
There is absolutely no contest, it's Android every time. Open ended and so diverse.
WM6.5 was ok but very limited for capacitive devices and it was only really Sense that made it a decent experience, I haven't used it since Android became a viable alternative on the HD2 about four months ago. With WM7 Microsoft looked at Apple and the way Jobbby Jobs doesn't like the end user to have any control over their own phones and decided to have WM7 behave the same way - it is so limited in comparison to Android with very little scope to change the way it looks or works. Quite a lot of people might be jumping across to WM7 at the moment but a lot of them will soon realise the open ended experience offered by Android is infinitely better and come back.
Also, to say the UI on WM7 is an acquired taste is putting it mildly, it looks like it's designed for a short-sighted 5 year old. I prefer things a little more subtle.

It's rubbish. The HD2 screen colour depth is a hardware limitation and can't simply be 'unlocked'.
1.Android
2.WinMo 6.5
3.WP7
Android is so open and easy to customize its just far better in that aspect. WP7 is pretty much iOS minus the words Apple on it. It is so closed and locked down that its damn near impossible for any customization, no access to your SD card as you have to format at it for it to even read it, and the biggest deal breaker for me is the lack of tethering. Tethering may be a niche market but damn it as a college student trying to save money this is a HUGE deal breaker that has automatically swayed me back to Android.
1 Android
2 Android
3 Android
and maybe android as well
I think people need to look at these choices objectively. When you compare capabilities of all three operating systems then you can see a clear difference. All you have to do is get a pen and pad and write down features.
Android is the best well rounded and feature rich Operating System. To argue that it's not is just uneducated to say the least.
WinMo was nice 5 years ago but now is just dated and doesn't have the simple feel a cell phone should have. Sure it has Sense but that lag fest of an interface (HTC Messaging) didn't impress me. Covering up a dying OS is what Sense was. Now that NAND Android is out why are people still using WinMO.....?. What does WinMO even have to offer to the table anymore not to mention it will be a dead OS.
Windows Phone has a very lovely interface and beautiful transitions and scrolling. I love the Operating System and as of yesterday I been using it regularly. Windows Phone is not even close to the functionality of Android but the smooth fluid behavior and interface I like. One thing I hated about android is its choppy behavior.
Conclusion:
Fanboying WinMo is going to leave you in the dark ages. Fanboying anything is just not good consumer sense anyway. If you want full featured OS then Android is 100% that. Windows Phone is for someone in the experience of a device. I most likely will flash Android back on my device once I have played enough around with Windows Phone because mass storage and tethering are kinda important for a business user such as myself. Its nice the devs have given us all these options
On native phones:
Android, WP7
On HD2:
WP7, Android
WP7 is so much smoother than Android on the HD2 it's almost comical. There's a near-negligible performance difference between the HD2 running WP7 and an actual HD7 running Windows 7 (in fact certain elements like the loudspeaker performance are even superior in the HD2).
Android on the HD2 has, comparatively, a very long way to go. Compare any of the ROMs on the HD2 with a native device running an analogous ROM (e.g. HD2 running anything vs. GalaxyS running anything) and the HD2 will be soundly embarassed.

That is news to me, I'm running Jaws MIUI and, other than the MMS being a bit flaky, it's as good as perfect. As for you thinking WM7 is near perfect on the HD2, the storage issues and button configuration say otherwise in my opinion.
I can see the writing on the wall for this thread, but I will post my 2 cents' worth:
Android is my OS of choice, and I really can't see that changing. The reason being is that I am able to customize every inch of this phone to my specifications. Windows OS is so limited in that respect.
I am using Darkstone's SuperRam Froyo and it really can't be beat. I have no glitches, no hiccups. Everything works for me.
I also love having an app for every aspect of my life. As soon as I think of something I need - google it and Bam! there's an app for that!
I can't for the life of me see why I would trade this in for something as glitchy as Windows Mobile 7. Maybe when the rough spots are smoothed over I might give it a try, but right now I'm not convinced.
And don't even go there with 6.5 - I hated it from the getgo. Was so glad when I finally took the plunge and put Android on my phone.,
My OS of choice is Android.
WinMo is very good OS, but simply outdated and there are practically no good commercial games/apps for that platform. It's more or less dead platform.
I have tried WP7 recently and i must say I'm impressed. When i watched about it on youtube, i thought it sucks hard. But i was impressed when i installed it. Everything was smooth and was simply working. Biggest problem was no good way to install apps. I don't want to give M$ my data for that code and sideloading does not work properly (it shows error that i have to uninstall app after some time). Also pinch to zoom is crappy. But otherwise really good OS.
android
I fell in love with WP7. I miss how cool I could make android look, but dang, WP7 is so smooth and everything just werks.

Android's not smooth at all.
The button config can't be helped since the HD2 doesn't have a physical camera actuation button, and WP7 can't hardware map send/end call. But besides that, yeah it's pretty much as perfect as it is on an actual WP7 device (which also eats SD cards, doesn't save camera settings on exit, et cetera) if the end-user hasn't borked the install. The biggest part of this closeness comes from the smoothness and speed, which are comparable to WP7 on native handsets like the HD7.
Unless you mean to suggest that Android is nearly as fast and smooth on the HD2 as it is on native Android handsets..

What kind of glitches, besides the OS-related ones inherent to WP7 (e.g. eating SD cards)?
I just think there's a different superiority on native handsets vs. superiority on a hacked handset.
Have had wp7 installed for about 24 hours now and its a breath of fresh air. I was increasingly getting fed up of not having room on the home screen of my phone for my links and info, I have always thought the 5 or 7 horizontal screen screen swipe was best for tablets as you can have each page for different interests where as when I'm on my phone I need it there.
If Microsoft can keep updating the flaws I will be using wp7 for a phone and android for a tablet.
Android wins for me.
WP7 is very smooth, which is awesome. Also, I like the "time set" UI element (such as when setting an alarm.) It's really convenient.
But it's so limited. I feel like I'm in handcuffs. I can't have a background image. Very few apps support live tiles. Tiles are only 1x1 or 1x2. Live tiles are not interactive. The status bar keeps insisting that it should disappear after a few seconds. USB mass storage is a no-go. Pinch-zoom doesn't work correctly. Why can't I replace the keyboard?
The basic UI is terrible. There is so much wasted space, and I can't figure out why all of the words are cut off all of the time. So cluttered. Also... why is everything only one color? Can't I customize my phone?
The marketplace is an utter mess. I thought Android's market needed work (and it does) but this is enormously frustrating, trying to navigate through this mass of music and apps.
There's also not very many apps, though I suppose that will change in the future.
Android is so much more flexible. I will gladly take a little bit of lag if it comes with the freedom to actually be able to use my phone.
WinMo isn't really on the list for me. I used it for probably a grand total of 20 minutes since I owned this device and removed it as soon as NAND was released.

What's it like ?

I know there are reviews etc. online, but they aren't by hd2 owners
So I would be interested in knowing the thoughts of fellow hd2 owners who have been rolling with Android.
How does WP7 compare ? Are you ready to switch your daily OS to it ?
I have had 2 iPhone and HTC legend and the hd2 is mental. The huge community and ROM dev is awesome.

as sooon as i realized i could install wp7 i tried it.
smootest OS i ever tried, at the moment, although, i prefer Android (I have both)
we'll see..
I was using Android from day 1 he was ported on to HD2 ( best phone in the world , no doubt ).
As soon as i read about porting WP7 i knew i will have to install it .. And i did.. And i like it ..
Like devilman said, smoothest OS ive ever put my hands on.. Some things are missing.. Some things are diffrent.. It just takes time for me ( or any one ) to get used to this type of OS.. Im keeping it definitely.
Laynee
Cool, thanks for the replies.
Gaming looks great, and I am a fan of the tiled UI. Also Zune looks good.
I'll give it a go.
I have an iPhone 4 as my daily use phone and used my hd2 to tinker with all the android builds. After having used Windows Phone 7, I am seriously considering selling my iPhone and using this as my daily phone. For me, it really is that good.
I didn't think I would like wp7 that much considering how locked down it is and it's not very customizable... but after a couple days playing with it, it has really grown on me. Luckily I have the HD2 so I can have wp7 and android, because I'm pretty torn between the 2 as being my main os. I'm keeping both on my HD2 for sure... and hopefully cotulla will release the sd bootable version of wm6.5 for the few apps that I like to use like fpsece and gps apps. WP7 on nand and wm6.5 and android on sd will be perfect for me.
After starting with iPhone and moving to Android, I don't like the iPhone like locked down nature of the OS. I do love WP7's graphical interface, marketplace and music player much better than iPhone or Android. I also like the Zune/Xbox Live connectivity.
Android has a poor music player and a desktop like interface compared to WP7, although I do like the widgets. Also it suffers from fragmentation and inability of many owners to officially upgrade their OSes. However Android is also much more open and has many more apps. Iphone has a good music player but their layout gets boring after a while even with the jailbreak. One positive with the iPhone is that they have the most apps and most app compatibility between their phones (4, 3GS, iPod Touch, etc.)
Hopefully now that we have the ability to change the registry and navigate through the folders, Microsoft will not lock down their phones again when they make their updates. WP7 has the potential to be the best of the three if they play their cards right.
I wrote a little review, kepple.tumblr.com
Ive had wp7 since they released it, in fact, it made me replace my hd2 with a newer one because the old one had a couple knicks..couldnt have a smooth os and a phone with scratches love that windows finally did to the zune what apple did with ipod

WP7 is indeed the smoothest OS I've seen on my phone. I used WP7 for around 1 day then went back to Android, because of:
- Browser is still slower then Android
- No Flash
- No full facebook integration(chat?, direct link to pictures? messaging?)
- No Spotify
- No Whatsapp
- Freaking high app prices
For the rest I really liked it
I'm using daily on my HD2, i love it.
UI is quite different to others I have used, I really like the live tiles, the screen is very responsive compared to Android, the email client is SUPERB, very very business friendly, only downside for me so far, is the lack of customisation options compared to Android and the market could do with a few more free apps. I am dual booting WP7 and Android, so I switch to Android for the apps that I use that are missing from WP7 namely Copilot and Audiogalaxy.
At this point in time, only a very sad person would protest against the HD2 and WP7. Really amazing OS on a really amazing phone. WP7 for a whole week now. The feeling is undeniable !!

Android on samsung focus?

Hello all.
I wonder if it's possible to install dual boot on samsung focus, with
Windows Mobile 7.
Thanks.

If you don't like WP7, get urself a Captivate. They even share a same battery. I'm out of laggy, battery draining Android.

I can understand people wanting both OSes, but if you just want Android, you should just sell your Focus and buy the Captivate. The latter is a better looking device (I have one).
I go back and forth between the two, and each has clear advantages and disadvantages over the other. If I had to pick ONE, I would probably go with the Captivate (custom ROM), but the Focus isn't very far behind, which is saying a volume about the first execution from Microsoft.
I am no MS fanboy (and is there such a thing?), but I think WP7 is something MS got mostly right first time around. There are clearly issues with WP7, but nothing compared to the first incarnation of Android (just ask people who had to endure through the early devices -- e.g. HTC G1 -- and their subsequent updates). Android prominence didn't materialize until 2.0 (Eclair) with Motorola Droid and a flurry of subsequent 2.x-based devices from Motorola, Samsung and HTC.

Same back and forth here
For most of the time my SIM is in Focus cause the long-lasting battery life and better working GPS. My captivate usually cannot last longer than 18 hours without flight mode. But when I'm out of town I switch to Captivate. Bing map has too little information.

Captivate +'s:
+ Tons of apps
+ Better market/shopping experience
+ Better search + voice recognition
+ Better Google service integrations (e.g. Google Voice, Books, etc.)
+ Better maps (including Navigation)
+ Flash support
+ Better looking (subjective but the textured backcover looks 100x better than the plastic one on the Focus)
+ More ways to customize (e.g. change the launcher)
+ Multitasking
Focus +'s:
+ Better Exchange integration
+ Better MS Office support (e.g. very accurate view of pptx files)
+ VERY fluid UI (try smooth pinch to zoom on Android)
+ Better music player + PC sync (Zune is second to none)
+ Better international roaming support (e.g. adjusting to timezone in Calendar)
+ Better battery life by a long shot
+ Better GPS signals and faster fixes
+ Dedicated Camera button + LED

I'll probably sell because I like to take advantage of the phone and not

I'm currently running both (Focus and Captivate) as stock. Focus is very slick with the UI and very it's very fluid with no lag. Captivate has nice WiFi hotspot capability, no MMS issues and no SD card issues. And yes swapping the battery is simple since it's the same battery for both models. Sometimes one phone can't do it all. If Apple had a user replaceable/swappable battery, and changed to a Micro or Mini USB type connection to PC, had SD card slot, they would have a clear winner. But they don't hence the WP7 phone. I'm actually glad to be back on the MSF platform after many WinMo phones, and can't wait for the updates. I would say out of the gate, MSF and Google have good phones and same with Apple. It just might be that no one will build an ultimate phone as then we would have no incentive to buy the latest model as quickly as we do now. That would affect everyone's bottom line (sales revenue $) but eventually the device is not where the money will be with these phones. It will be services and the "cloud" and that is where Microsoft will win. So for now we all live half decent phones. Eventually some one will build a great phone, to equally match the sevices from the cloud. What Microsoft did with the PC OS they will do with their phone platform. So hang onto those Samsung Focus devices because it will be a pleasure to own.
lol, i switched from iPhone 4 to WM7, besides less app selection, the phone performs equally well in terms of speed and UI transition.
Played with android in stores as well, slow UI and from what i heard... battery die quick.

No phone on earth got dual system support so far.
Focus is a WP7 device, even if someone put Android on it by chance, it's going to buggy and unusable.

You should try the HTC HD2, i got one and i have run all Windows Mobile 6.5, Android and WP7 in it. I got a focus now because i switched to AT&T for work reasons, but i still have my HD2 as a backup. If you want to be able to switch between OSs, that is the phone for you.

I have mine setup that way and i love it . I am on WM7 most of the time though, unless i go out of town and I need navigation. I have a Focus as well but had to give it to my younger sister because she lost her Captivate, but she did like the Focus much better due to better battery life, fb integration and overall very fluid ui.
check out AtoB app on windows phone 7.
it has turn by turn navigation. not perfect, but, pretty usable
I fell victim to the WP7 promise
I purchased a Focus within a week of it being released. I knew there were shortcomings but really did believe all the Hype of a quick update process to get some of the missing features in. Now that the update process has been completely botched with "Copy / Paste" being the only apparent "feature" added. Even worse now knowing the [email protected] controls the release of the updates I doubt I'll see the things I really need until sometime next year.
I can't wait that long. I travel and need a real navigation program. I use Pandora and Sirius XM and I miss having that on my phone. Also my banking App and all the websites that use flash and do not work.
Last week after learning the "official" update is no where in sight for this phone (I don't think I should have to screw around trying to force an update) I went and bought a Motorola Atrix. This is my first Android and my first non-WinMo phone in something like 12 years.
Now I have what I need. The Motorola is pretty slick and with all the little "widgets" you can get more info up front than the live tiles provided.
I am a die hard MS fan but I truly think they blew it with WP7. I even considered going back to my old Rhodium because it did more than the Samsung, it was just underpowered and therefore constantly crashing. I think I'll be happy with this Atrix though.......so far it has it all.

Looks like the features you need currently works better on Android, but I think Atrix is still not a great choice.
I'll be one happy person if they ever port Gingerbread to the Focus.

yup i totally agreed that android is completely trash, google buy back android and claimed that its theirs which so shame of them , laggy , bad battery life and so on are something which not necessary to mention anymore as this is so well known, horrible UI , stupid browser without gpu accel, it suck really..if you think android is that good , do not buy samsung focus then, because a good mobile OS dont need dual OS, one OS for all already enough..the answer is Windows Phone 7

7 reasons why move to WP7

Wondering what is the point of this thread? Well, simple. It is because of the fact, that many people have no idea what is Windows Phone 7 all about, and don't even know what they are missing. So these are the most important things why I don't use Android (nor WM) on my HD2 anymore.
1. Lighting fast booting.
There is no stock OS in the world which would be able to turn on the phone in less then 20 seconds. WP is.
2. Lighting fast reactions
There is no stock OS in the world with so snappy reactions. Never scrolled through my apps this fast.
3. Fastest gaming
WP7 gives you ability to play games with higher FPS compared to Android builds. Plus with the newest NoDo update for WP7 you can say good bye to the loading bar, because of the whole new way to load apps which actually makes loading time around 100% faster. See video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rmv6rfrW-4&feature=related
4. Ability to record 720p videos
There is no other OS that gives you ability to record HD videos on your HD2, yet.
5. No more accidental making/answering phonecalls
Did your friends ever ***** that you were calling them, but didn't actually say anything, but you would swear you didn't call? Well, that's because the only thing that is neccesary to answer a phonecall is just to press the "green" button, and to make one, all you have to do is with unlocked screen press the button twice (altough it sounds impossible to turn on the screen and make phonecall all itself, it actually happened to me like 10 times. Not okay.) With the WP7, pressing that button won't do anything (it is linked to camera button). To answer the call you need to slide with your finger up, plus tap the little answer button in the middle of the screen (not at the bottom).
6. Things simply WORK
The WP7 is not like anything you ever seen, it simply works, no matter what are you doing, no restarts, no freezes. And despite it is relatively still in its early stages it has almost no bugs.
7. Modern look and feel
Looking at the home screen is like being in the gallery of art. It is so simple, that it is actually beautiful.
I can guarantee that after 2 days with this OS you are going to fall in love with it as much as i did. But always make sure you backed up your SD Card before switching to the wp, I didn't
Not trying to down play your enthusiasm for the new WP7 OS but I got my first hands on experience with a HTC Surround last night and all of what you said is true. I still found the OS lacking in a couple of areas, all of which are just personal issues. But the biggest issue I have with it not having multitasking is a very big deal breaker for me. But the OS is very smooth and sleek. I do think it is more of a OS for the masses and not for tweakers and moders like other OSs. Also I think it is very much focused on social networking and not business support or actual smartphone functionality. Just my opinion, glad you like your phone man.
I enjoyed my time with it.
Used it for about 2 1/2 months, but ultimately went back to Android for the selection of apps and the many variations of Android available for the HD2.
One thing about the WP7 ROM that frustrated me was the constant camera shots of the inside of my pocket... Can't tell you how many times that thing went off because the Green "Phone" button was held down by me sitting or something.
I may go back to it once multitasking is added and better apps become available.

it's an excellent OS and will definitely appeal to the masses. However it just won't appeal to people like me. Some people want more than something that simply looks good and works.

1) Actually with the newer HTC Android phones (or if you run any Sense 2.0 ROM on an HTC phone), you can hibernate instead of fully shutting down and be up in less than 10 seconds.
2) That's because Google doesn't turn on hardware acceleration for the UI, but I believe Samsung's Galaxy S phones have it enabled.
3) Faster gaming because all WP7 phones out now use the same Snapdragon processor (even the Samsung Focus), so it's easier to develop games for one piece of hardware. Think iPhone.
4) That's not really a reason to switch to a different OS, but ok, I'll give you that.
The last 3 reasons are mainly aesthetics. Basically it depends on what you want to do; If you want things that "just work", go use WP7 or grab an iPhone. If you want to tinker and customize things, use Android. It's true, I've tried WP7 and it definitely is slick. I did get sick of the UI in a lot of apps, but it is a nice OS overall. However, in my case I like to tinker and that's why I use Android. I like that I can have different launchers. I like that, if I don't want to put my app up on the market, I can offer it somewhere else. I like that I'm not tied to desktop software.
Again, it's a nice OS, but not for everyday use for me. If I didn't care about tinkering with my phone and all I did was message people and talk on the phone, I'd probably grab a Blackberry Bold.
looks good is 1 thing
there are alot of other things which MUST work and MUST have
and WP7 is lacking at those areas, yet
believe it requires more enhancement (iOS took 2 years+) and hope Microsoft does something similiar, thought they are taking ages
WP7 is lacking at those areas?

+1 It is a shame the greatest device made to date is the last personal PDA/phone device that will ever have Widows Mobile as an operating system. All hail to Windows Mobile for showing the world what a mobile OS was suppose to be like and function like. Windows Mobile gives one the sense of true mobile computing in the palm of your hand.
tried wp7 for a maximum of 3 days, if i put together all the time spent using it. Personally.. i don't like it.
1. the feeling that a power user gets while using it. I don't feel like i'm using the phone, it's more like i'm tricking the phone to do what i want. i don't need zune crap, i don't neet default non customizable home screens, i need more functionality, i need a file explorer, i need usb storage, hell yeah.. i need a real wallpaper. I can get some of that.. but i got to hack the phone...
2. apple like sloppy market place. No, it's not about the few apps available (more will come). But if i want to install my own apps, if i simply download them from the pc and want to transfer, if i try some home cooked simple apps etc.. damn again.. i got to hack the phone first
3. Feels smoth and fast? Not enough for me. I want more then that. I have a 1ghz processor, some ****load of ram and 4.3 inch of screen to display 2-3 pages of insipid apps and that tom&jerry looking not customizable home screen. If i want simplicity and "things that simply work" i'll get an Iphone 3g and laugh at the face of MS that requires all that hardware components and about .. God knows how many years to develop some OS to do what my Iphone does with 1/3 resources. But i have the HD2, damn again.. i really want apps, i want functionality, i want to tweak the system.. but first i have to hack it
4. Nodo update brings us.. the glorified much awaited copy&paste functionality.. uaau, that's a feature.. windows ce 1.0 had it, my oldest casio organizer had it, wp7 receives it after an upgrade Guess we need a service pack to get usb mass storage or a better file explorer. also guessing i better start hacking the phone if i need them sooner.
5. Storage card policy. What's with the wacky 1 partition of nand+storage stuff or whatever MS is doing? Since i don't have usb mass storage i have to wait some awful amount of time to see thing copied via .. zune, because i don't have the possibility to use the memory card. I'm lucky hd2 has that slot, some wp7 phones don't have it, at least. They must be hacked first.
6. Multitasking... is there a hack for that?
7. i don't really need the "operating system of tomorrow" i first have to live today.
Thanks for your opinions. As you said it is not a OS for power users but for the masses. I am not a power user, all I want is clean, smooth and user friendly ui which works fast no matter what. And if the WP7 would be out for 4 years like your beloved iOS it would be like 4 times better than that in my opinion (by the way, its strict rules about no-usb mass storage and all that Zune thing is very similar to the Apple's iTunes, don't you think?). But seriously, what is all the tweaking and customizing for? If you want to play, just go out and buy a PSP or something, this is a phone which is supposed to work fast, and do what you need it to. Call me old-fashioned but that's simply what I think.
used android for 4 months, then dual booted wp7 and android for another 2 months...but iam back now to wm6.5...(dual booting with android on sd of course .)....nothing beats it....iam a doc and need my medical software apart from the other great "useful" software from 6.5
Fair point about WM7 not being as mature as iOS, but the simple fact is, that it's not 2007 anymore. MS doesn't have 4 years to bring its system up to date, coz Apple and Google are not going to stand still and wait for them. And looking at the speed MS is relasing the updates - it might be not 4 years, but unfortunately a lot longer.
As for your question about the need for customization, just listen to this: I've bought myself a Htc Desire HD, and as you probably know it takes quite a while for the manufactures to update its handsets to the latest versions of Android. But thanks to Rom developers my phone is running the latest system, with a lot customizations and tweaks, minus all the bloatware. In effect battery life is exceptionally better, the mobile is so much faster, and everything just works.
Never the less, the best thing out of all of that, is the choice we got from competition - so lets hope Android, iOS and WM7 will all prevail, because at the end of the day, as we're all different, the more choice we've got - the better for all of us.

I have 2 reasons why WP7 isnt good for me.
1. Battery life. I havent tested the NoDo update, but the ROM I tested could barely hold one day of moderate usage.
2. Live services. Microsoft doesnt have a good partner in my country, so i cant get an activation code for the Marketplace, so the phone is mostly useless to me.
However, if any of you is willing to call MS in their country and get me and activation code, I would give a shot to this OS and eternal gratitude to the person which gets me the code.

+1 I got your point. But the thing is, that WP is just good out of the box, with this OS there is no need to tweak or customize anything, coz it works perfectly fast and looks beautiful. Maybe my requirements for a good OS are kinda low, but this OS has everything I was looking for. I use my phone primarily for calling/texting and occasionally music/movies while traveling. All I am saying is, that WP7 is perfectly suited for an average user. Every OS has its own spell and every OS is suited for somebody else. Thank god for our HD2s that are giving us ability to use which one we like the most.
Yea, things simply work when there's not much there in the first place. It's like saying how a toddler's tricycle "simply works" compare to an advanced automobile with powerful computers/ECU and a crapload of mechanical parts. Both is a viable mode of transportation, but guess which one I'm favoring for?
As said some people want something more than something that just works. Even if it works great. People want to explore, try out, maybe do the impossible. Look at it like this, if it weren't for the tweaking/customizing/hacking, WP7, let alone android, would never have reached our HD2's. But as said again you only want something that works, and its your opinion, and that's good. But cuz of the hacking and modding you found the next type of phone you want to get next, a WP7 phone.
I'm not saying you should go on tweaking or customizing or whatever, just don't go around and say, "But seriously, what is all the tweaking and customizing for? If you want to play, just go out and buy a PSP or something, this is a phone which is supposed to work fast, and do what you need it to." cuz it makes you sound as if you aren't grateful at all, and that you're sounding like verizon/motorola, use it as it is, which we tweakers object to.
Note, again, hacking mobile phones/devices came long before the PSP even came out., and that time, people enjoyed it also.
Hey OP, have you done alot of web browsing on WP7? It is absolutely painful: poor rendering, sloooow, and no flash! This reason alone is enough for many non-tech users to avoid WP7 for now. On Android we get almost the entire web rendered as it should be. In addition, Android just works, even ported on an HD2. Plus, you can use the OS as is or you can explore multiple layers of customization and hacking. It's the best of both worlds.
Android is better in every respect than Windows 7 and iPhone, the facts speak for themselves people are turning to Android int he droves.

[Q] is windows phone 7 better that android nand?

i'm a noob when it comes to WP7 but i have some xp with android...i would like some advice on which to stick to from other HD2 users..
I will stick to WP7 longer I guess ..Sticking with AND Nand for 6months and just move to WP7 few days back and it's really impress me a LOT..
Windows is just problem free ....
Window phone 7 great for me too
man, the number of applications on android will make you never look back. Google apps are amazing. the only app on wp7 that i constantly use is google map &gmail. what do you think?
Sent from my Nexus One using xda premium
I still don't believe that wp7 is faster than wm 6.5... I never used android, because wp7 is all i need, and its really great.
Off NAND both work very well indeed, so the only deciding factor for me would be what i want to do and what suits my needs more.
I got both on dual boot and can never decide which is better. WP7.5 Mango is great, but Android has more apps and is more democratic playing different format videos and perfect for ebooks. Mango has better overall integration, the People hub and many others just blend in flawlessly with everything incorporated together - contacts, photos, social networking, appointments etc, which I love. So I switch between the OSs during the day, could never stick with just one.
Wp7 is an ideal phone, android is ok, it has a lot of apps, but is that really a good reason to use an OS? since i tried WP7 ive never used Android and i think its time it got deleted. Each to their own, they both are good at what they do, i would say that you give WP a chance, try it out for a month or at the very least a couple of weeks, if after that you dont like it, then its not hard to go backward to android.
i used android for quite sometime. i enjoyed it and when the android market kept getting filled up with more apps, i was near the conclusion that Android was the best OS ever.
Then i gave WP7 a try nearly 3 months ago.
I'm still using WP7 to this day.
Depends on what your needs are. I've used android since 1.5, now using wp7 and I'm really happy with it.
For WP7 to be perfect and for me to give up Android it still has a way to go. As an example, I need to be able to just load files other than music or videos, such as e-books or docs, for example. Otherwise we get PDA reader app and no possibility to just load whatever we want to read, let alone any other format reader, other than sending files to oneself or using drop box, but neither of those will be free of data usage. Another biggie for me is movies, I like to just get my movies in 3Gp, drop them on my card and watch them, which is not something WP7 is capable of managing, in fact, anything that will allow the card to be used as simple storage will be appreciated. Personal Virtual assistant is one of my favorites on Android, I use Speaktoit and enjoy it a lot, hoping to see something along the same lines on WP7 at some point. And finally the simple sync options overall would be a bonus, going through Zune for every little thing is not as convenient as just using your card. Hence I am torn between the two and feeling grateful I am able to dual boot.
I had WP7.5 on my HD2 and during the holiday blues I installed Android 4.0. I was excited in the begining but yesterday I went back to WP7.5
Android 4.0 felt slow on the handset and I really really really dont like the UI :S
My experience with coming to WP7
"Better" is a matter of taste and personal preference, I'd also say. I like Android's flexibility in terms of settings and tweaks and the extent of configurability it provides. Not to mention the application base and the huge development community, which results in a myriad of different flavors and setups for each taste. A big advantage.
However, I've just recently switched from using SD android to trying and testing NAND android to finally discovering the WP7 on my HD2 - and I was naturally impressed with the straightforward, elegant, but most importantly - very fluid/smooth user interface. However, my reason for turning to WP7 was not the UI - a NAND runnymede/Sense35 build was as responsive, smooth and fast as well. But it, like ALL android implementations running on HD2, had one big, but a very important drawback from my point of view - the camcorder. The recorded video is jerky, lags terribly, and is absolutely unusable. Most importantly, the HD2's hardware has nothing to do with it, as I now know. Tried several different builds, NAND and SD.
With WP7, I was literally blown away by the actual capability of my HD2's camera hardware - it felt like the first day I got my hands on the HD2, all over again. If there's anything that's unbeatable about WP7 here, it's the camcorder performance.
Video at [email protected] is fluid and sharp, both outdoors and indoors under poor lighting conditions. And, 720p video is also steadily @ 24fps - showing some noticeable jerkiness here and there (which is most likely due to it being recorded at 24fps instead of 30fps in the first place), but overall - I really was amazed.
WM6.5 camcorder performance in the beginning was "alright" and acceptable as I didn't have high expectations. After all - it IS a phone, not a real camcorder.. But having used various android builds on both NAND and SD after WinMo, the one big disappointment was the camcorder performance. Android just lacks a correct driver/lib implementation for the HD2-s camera hardware and nobody has been able to come up with one so far either.
In short - WP7 seems to have unleashed the true potential of the HD2-s camera hardware. In comparison to the fluidness and smoothness of recorded video between a DesireHD (which is a native android device) and my HD2 using WP7 - the HD2 came on top.
Now if I could find a way to have [email protected] (widescreen) and get the 720p record at 30fps instead of 24fps, it'd be ultimate Where there's a will, there's a way.
As for the other features of WP7 (apps, marketplace, tweaking options, useability), I have more to discover before reaching a solid opinion).
Wp7.5 on nand and Android in sd...why not best of both worlds ;-)

thanks
thanks everyone....i have tried both of them and they are both good but i guess i am loving android more
Windows Phone 7.5 and Android 4.0 dual boot, that's the best solution in my opinion, but anyway - WP is faster and its my primary OS
Best of both worlds to me would be WM and WP =) or better still would be WP UI, driver model and usability without any restrictions allowing for WM level of customization and flexability
Sent from my HD2 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
It's all personal preference. for instance, i do miss the android market and it's vast selection compared to the WP7 marketplace. Android on the HD2 also had more capabilities of tweaks and other settings. i also missed the custom wallpapers on the home screen. obviously not obtainable on WP7...yet?
but overall, i think WP7 is far more superior regardless of the negatives. I am able to get work done on the go and everything is easily accessible quickly. WP7's UI is also better than android's UI.
