Right now, my Aria is updated to the official 2.2 update ( I downloaded the update through the phone)
I want to root my phone now, so I went researching around here about the rooting process, and found this helpful guide.
However, I also read something about after updating to 2.2, I can't root my phone.
So right now I want to ask whether I can root my phone by following the steps in that guide? Or will it cause problems to my phone?

Sorry, but if you took the official Froyo 2.2 OTA, then chances are you will not be able to root your phone at this time. This update modified your HBOOT boot loader and the root exploit that Unrevoked uses has been fixed and prevents rooting.

How did you download the HTC ARIA Froyo 2.2 OTA update? To my knowledge this update has not been released.
Aww... that sucks. Anyway thanks for helping.
I was meddling around the settings of the phone and found a check for update button, clicked it and a message appeared stating a new update is available, then I downloaded it.

HTC released Froyo 2.2 OTA update for international versions of the Aria, i.e. non-AT&T branded Aria.
Related
update from T-Mobile.
Update message just poped up. Should I root phone before update (I don't know if I am ready yet - may end up with brick) or I be able to root phone later after playing a little with official update. Anyone can share a info. Thanks
You have to downgrade to RC29 in order to root, so before the update or after the update, it really doesn't matter. As long as you read the instructions carefully, and install/download the necessary components in order to root your phone, you should be fine.
Thank You
I feel better knowing that there is always a chance to root it after official update. Thanks again

and yes, follow the default processes for downgrading
It is possible.
Yes, I thought this was covered 154,673,290,325 times before.
I would like to remind ppl, because many of you didn't think about...
If you will apply, 2.1 OTA update, on your 1.5, you will LOOSE ability to root. Don't be fools, and wait until you get "official" rooted 2.1, then flash it by yourself.
Please someone make it more clear if possible...
...But 2.1 official cannot be rooted, after update.
So turn off your Update check on your phone, and wait until there will be 2.1 rooted.
P.S
Looks like there is possibility to downgrade from OTA 2.1!! Omg
May I ask why HEOR upgraded to official 2.1 OTA couldn't be rooted??
It is temporary unable or permanently??
Can you substantiate this claim? Proof that the instantroot method (using the package installer's privileges) does not work on 2.1 for instance?
@iholleh
It's not possible to root at the moment, it could be quite a while before someone figures out how to root it if its already on a device, however if its looked at enough I'm sure they will do it. when its officially released it will be rooted very quickly to be flashed as a zip.
good to know...thanks for hte info!

The problem is you can't say one way or the other.. so if root is important to you then you are better off waiting.

Thx bro! I just upgraded to 2.1 OTA and trying to downgrade to 1.5, failed however...
Wait for good news
I think we need to make clear. What to do if.
I installed the first package (First OTA, PART 1, Youtube App update)?
Like I heard in develop, if I installed part 1 update, this stupid youtube update, i need downgrade.
I don't really understand why, and how to do that. I think many of noobs like me are interested, what to do now.
I have promted by my phone that 2.1 update is realeased, and I did not downlnoad it, because I would like to have root, to install in a future Android 2.2, etc.
If so, and i have Firmware build number 2.73.405.93, or 2.73.405.94, or 2.73.405.95. What should I do?
Please someone, write step by step action guide.
(Downgrade, root, install rooted 2.1?) If so, how exactly?
I also understand that, there is 100000000000 of guides out there, but IMHO we need new one for a while.
Situation with "not installed" OTA part 1 is little bit easier? Normal ROOT, and install for coocked, and rooted official 2.1?

I guess so, but how likely is it that the hero's 2.1 firmware is different in this regard from anything else? A quick google confirmed that the InstantRoot method works on nexus one and motorola droid.
Edit: But a little longer google had me wondering if it does work on 2.1 again. Sorry, I should check more carefully. If anyone has tried it do step up.
Check out dev. section. Looks like there is way to downgrade.

Correct, just run the RUU
can confirm, this works ...
What if I want to root it up to 2.2 (Froyo) that would be fine because it is like you are upgrading to newer firmware?
Hi i just have a stupid question :
i'm quite lost with all the stuffs about the 2.1 update :
i have a 1.5 stock rooted rom on my hero.
i would like to update to 2.1 but keep the root thing.
and i want not to wipe my phone
So what i undestand is :
- if i update : i'm not root anymore and won't be able to do it with the 2.1
- if i want to be 2.1+root i have to use a full rom (rooted) to have both but i have to wipe my phone.
Is that right ?
Is there or will it be a way to have an update (not wiping phone), in 2.1, and with root maintained from my 1.5 ??
Thanx for help.. i don't what to do with this ota update...
Ciao

In theory, as long as your build number still reads 2.36.605.1. Might not work correctly, though, if it's trying to patch files.
i did get the update
i did accept the update
it does remove root
but i was able to easily get root after it
just adding that i only had the first part of the rooting process done
i didnt have a custom rom or recovery
Androidforums is following this here.
http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/111235-anyone-receive-12-8mb-ota-update-today.html
So far the build number and software numbers are bumped and the Heroc baseband (the latest 2.42.01.04.27 that Sprint has) is installed.
Hopefully we can get a logcat of the update so the devs can pick it apart and find out how it ticks.
Another user had posted a day or two ago on Androidforums that a VZW rep had told him an OTA was going to be pushed out to resolve audio issues. A few people wrote him off but it looks like they may have been right.

I don't know about other Android (or HTC phones), but VZW/HTC have never put a bootloader update into their OTAs for the Eris. (Probably too risky from a customer standpoint - a problem with flashing the bootloader will definitely cause a brick.)
For root users, most of whom are using ROMs that defeat OTA updates, there would be little risk. For leakers, who don't have a friendly bootloader in the first place - well, can the bootloader get any worse than it already is?
There is a chance that the recovery partition will be different (VZW/HTC did that during the 2.1 OTA update)- and right now, that is the only glimmer of hope for the leakers wanting root.
We need to find out if the recovery partition got changed ASAP - at the moment, that is the big risk.
If anybody captures the URL for the download, please post it up.
bftb0
Yeah I didn't figure they'd mess with Hboot.
Has anyone captured this so we can install and not wait for the OTA? I have two Eris phones, one on Leak v.2 and one running the RUU 2.1 (upgraded from Leak v.3)
Firmware 2.1
Baseband 2.40.00.01.22
Kernel 2.6.29-564a4a15
[email protected] #1
Build 2.26.605.4 CL 140744 release keys
will I get the OTA? If not, how would I go about getting a rom to get the update?
I tried renaming otacerts.zip.bak back to otacerts.zip but apperently I'm not smart enough to...
What does this update do, if anybody knows?
Specifically does it fix the silent bug?
Neither here, nor Androidforums has had anyone capture the log file yet.
It's driving me crazy to know what's in this update. So far all I know is the build number is updated, and a new baseband.
I'm based in India and i have an Unlocked Droid Pro. I still have the stock Rom that is on the phone and i have not updated the phone because of the bad reviews i read on the droid forums. My questions are
1) If i update to gingerbread on my phone will it re-lock the phone to verizon as it did in an earlier OTA Update?
2) Currently my phone keeps prompting me to update to the 3.? OTA update that was already downloaded but i have not installed it fearing that the phone will get locked again. My question here is, Can i skip 3.? update and directly Update to Gingerbread
Your reply would be greatly appreciated

1- Updates don't lock the phone back to Verizon
2- You can't update OTA directly to Gingerbread. You have to go through 3.8.7.

To update via TBH you'll need to be rooted.
Otherwise you can apply the zip file that's available on the forum from stock recovery (doesn't need root).

You can't root Gingerbread on the Pro yet. The only way to have rooted Gingerbread is through the Team Black Hat app.

When i was rooted with Z4root, and accepted a VZ update, it put my phone in limbo.
I still had the SU icon, but i did not have SU permissions on my phone. Even doing a factory reset did not clear everything out. I had to manually push the OS onto my phone, then reinstall the current VZ update.
I just ordered a new, unlocked, but vodafone-branded Motorola Pro... Is there going to be an OTA update or do I need to flash a certain ROM (there are a few around, but I guess they're all from verizon)?
