How do you know when there is a new firmware out? - Galaxy Tab General

Hey guys,
I was wondering if there is some kind of trick or way to know when a newer firmware is out.

That's a good question. Besides finding out here in the forums, if there is a new official firmware will it download automagically?

One known source is www.samfirmware.com
It is not official and should be taken carefully but very useful.

There is a guy called Quattrofromagi who (we think) is a Samsung insider who posts details of new ROMs on Twitter, but if you're not experienced with flashing it's probably better to wait until one of the guys who know what they're looking at have a look and then post about it on here. A great many people got caught out with the signed bootloaders when JM6 came out because of rushing to flash from downloads from FUS or Samfirmware.

Well, if you are looking for stock ROMs or firmwares from Samsung, you can always connect via Samsung Kies to see if you have an update. But trust me its very very late/old and Kies is not really updated that often. Samsung thinks its too much work.
Samfirmware.com is more upto date with the latest official release of firmwares for each continent. However, because they are official releases they also contain the 'bootloader protection' gimmick that Samsung is pushing out. This was a headache at the start of 2011 but thanks to Chainfire and Rotohammer there is a solution to remove the bootloader lock now. Basically, they are locking down the bootloader so people can't install their own ROM unless they are from signed by Samsung and you get it from Kies. Obviously, this is due to carriers complaining (north american carriers) that people are activating the phone features of the tablet by updating their firmware to another continents' firmware, like Europe or Asia where they allow customers to make calls on their tablet.
Your best bet is to follow the forum here and look at what others are putting on. The best part is obviously, there are going to be a lot of posts about people testing the latest firmware, their experiences and how they worked out the kinks. I know it's daunting going through the posts but it can be quite informative in case you meet the same problems as others.
For your info, the best ROM right now that is stable and well tested is JMEv4 by Rotohammer.
The next ROM people are working on now is MoDaCo's kernel and ROM running ext4 filesystem because of its speed. And the overclocked 1.2Ghz kernel is also available for EURO tabs made by richardtrip to mix with any other ROM of your choice. These are currently still not stable but are working and will be ready very soon.
Hope that helps.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info. Very helpful.

Firmware update for SGS!!

hey guys, i bought my sgs a month back in singapore and the screen jus gets ppl drooling over it. My current firmware version is i9000dxjf4, and Kies mentions this as the latest firmware but samsung-firmware.webs.com shows that there are three other updates after i9000dxjf4 for the asian region. Is it safe for me to download and update the latest firmware from that website inspite of kies confirming that i'm having the latest firmware. Could u also check out that site its quite cool.
Thanks for your replies....
Kies won't show updated firmware as the Samsung Firmware releases are not official. You can by all means download and install, but they are unsupported and there are risks if you don't do it correctly! Most of us here have flashed new firmwares just fine though.
i was also wondering , i'm in asia so should i install asia specific firmware update or can i download european firmware update. I see that europeans get firmware updates frequently than the asians??

thanks man my problem got solved.....it was informative....
So, did you download the latest firmware from the Samsung site or went ahead to use one of the custom firmware? Would like to hear if some of the problems that we had been experiencing went away after your upgrade (e.g., GPS, lags, 3G/Wifi switch, etc).
I assume upgrading to the firmware from Samsung does not require rooting. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'll try to stay unrooted for warranty reason.
Cheers.
o you have to be ****ting me, please use the search before falsely getting peoples hopes up......

BTW, OP, I tried searching for the firmware on Samsung website but don't seems to be able to find it. Can you provide link for the mentioned firmware?

[ROM] OFFICIAL FROYO 2.2 Rogers/Fido Release

Like the title says, the official Froyo update is finally released! It can be downloaded straight from acer.ca under "Service & Support" and in the "Download Center". Just find our Liquid support page and click the "OS" tab and then choose "Froyo 2.2" under the drop down menu. Apparently you need the stock ROM to use the updates... but if you wait a bit and let the dust settle over at MoDaCo, you can do this on any ROM soon (seems like you already can but better wait for more confirmations from testers)
is there some notable improvements compared to the froyo leak a few weeks a go
Supposedly, it's older (Oct 5) than the most recent leak from Nov.. but more refined, a real official ROM vs. a leak after all. Reported snappier, better battery, and more stable.
Versions with less bloatware and porting for the A1 are now available:

Be warned that users who aren't on FIDO/Roger's network will have their phone simlocked, without any solution to sim-unlock

Someone mentioned: "just find acerril.conf in /etc and change it to 0 from 1"
Have seen a lot of people saying it doesn't work, but it was some time ago, so maybe now it's working, but take care !
unlock
would this help unlock the phone?
http://cgi.ebay.com/UNLOCK-CODE-ROG...tem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item2eae40a1e2
Has anyone unlocked a Liquid E yet? How about sim unlocking it and then updating it to 2.2. Would that lock it again?
Yes, it would lock it again.
The ebay link would not work, as you IMEI won't be a ROGER'S one, so they won't be able to unlock your device. (Not totally sure about this, but pretty sure)

The fido rom on that thread has a build date of Oct, 30. Same date as the latest leak. Check it out. It's the one I'll be using.
Sorry I couldn't repost the link, because I'm new here. First page on this thread.

All three of the roms on modaco are already sim unlocked. Have been changed from 1 to 0. Check it out for yourself. I haven't heard of anyone locking there phone with the modaco roms. If you use the acer roms, consider your phone locked. A few people have done that I'm sure.
Yes for the modaco's rom, but not everybody is aware of it or differences between official acer's roms and modaco's rom.
And there were a lot of thread "Help phone simlocked" after a post appeared on modaco about theses roms.
Rom's from alan090 seems to be good by the way (the modaco's one your're talking about), but I prefer to warn new users.

I originally posted this on the Asus TransformerForums. Still no update from .13

Root-Unroot-Restore-Lessons learned
Hello all. I've had my TF now since September or October and enjoying every minute of it. Bought mine in Japan so it was HTKXX.JP_epad-version B70 model. Like so many of us the first thing I wanted to do was root it and install custom ROMs. Being the B70like many I had to wait until Razorclaw was released but as soon as it was I was ready to root.
Let me say I'm not well versed in rooting, intalling, and troubleshooting Android devices...and like many the tablets are new to me. So, to help me figure it out I search and read the forums, re-read, and search again. Notice I said "search the forms", that is very important before posting questions as most of our questions have already been asked and answered. That being said, its ok to post a question, I've found the admins, mods, and other people with experience, problems, and solutions all willing to help. Don't forget, these people do this freely so always respect them even if you dont like the answers or advice they give you. Many of us would have some very shiny paper weights if not for the help from the many on here.
Now..to continue my little adventure. And root I did, Prime! 2.1.0, Revolver, Revolutions HD, and back to Prime! when I had questions I turned to the forums, and sometimes was even able to give a little advice myself. With ICS on the horizion and the latest OTA I thought I should look at unrooting and returning my device back to stock. So, again I turned to the forum for information. Because my TF was the JP model I was concerned there may be something with the build that would prevent this or I wouldnt be able to get the right firmware. You see...there isnt a lot of information related to JP models on the forum. I didnt realize they are all "pretty much the same".
Either way, I eventually posted a question and right away was helped with information or unrooting and reflashing back to stock. All the information however was to restore the US model. After some discussions with one of the RS guys I decided what the heck...gonna try it anyway. (the tinker/challenger in me)
Very good instructions for everything I wanted to do were there. If you think I'm joking, check the signature of RS Team Lead Frederuco. It's all there.
End result my TF was unrooted and now have ver 3.2.1 US.epad-8.6.5.13-20110925 kernel ver [email protected]#1. hmmm...I was worried because everyone was talking about ver.19 and .21...am I in trouble? I've tried various things to get caught up even with a version that I could possibly re-root. Oh boy....even trying to go back and get the JP update from ASUS didnt work, my device is now a US.epad device. My thoughts were...well, at least its still working.
Then I decided to do a bit more investigation, so i went to one of the local computer stores and checked the build and kernel version. I was suprised to see that the only difference in what I now have and what's in the stores is the JP & US. So, maybe what I'm waiting for hasnt gotten to Japan yet...or the ones in the store just haven't been updated. (more likely the case)
Either way, the point and advice here is this. if you decide to unroot and restore I dont recommend to the weak hearted to use a SKU other than what came on your device. It worked yes but not sure where I'm going from here. For me, it doesnt matter as I can always manually update when the versions are on the ASUS site. Worse case, I would have just bought another device and ....yep probably rooted it right away
We all know the risks we take when rooting, tinkering, etc. If you take the plunge, search, read, asks. And respect the people helping.
I hope this in someway helps someone
Update:
I've been able to get my TF from US.epad-8.6.5.13-20110925 to WW_epad-8.6.6.19-20111101 If nothing else I can at least root again. Will probably wait to see if I am actually getting OTA or not. The steps followed can be found in dev post "possible fix for lost root with 8.6.5.21" Sorry, I cant post links yet...
Note that I've changed the SKU on my device from JP to US to WW. So far I haven't seen any problems because of this. (still, if you aren't sure I recommend you dont)

[Q] Why won't my Beast Running UBKK2 Update?

Since I received my N7000 on November 17, 2011 from Mobilecityonline my Galaxy Note won't update. It's running UBKK2 - the CSC is TTT - which a Brazilian CSC.
I've searched every thread and correctly followed every step of the process I've found unsuccessfully, I've tried the manual update and receive "no update available" every time I read about a new firmware release. The CSC is listing only 3 codes; VNO, TTT, and TDR - I installed each one of these CSC codes in an attempt to prompt a software update to no avail. I haven't even gotten the update from January that provided the addition of the Torch & everything that came with it!
Short of rooting my Note is there anything I can do to either change the CSC Code to one that receives updates regularly or manually update the firmware? I thought I'd wait until ICS became available hoping that would correct these issues but I'm slowly getting PO'd that I may not be even to receive ICS.
Plus I didn't/don't see the reason to have rooted by now - I've rooted all of my Android devices from HTC EVO 4G's & 3D's, Nook Color, to Asus Transformers. Is there anything I can do without rooting this beast and will I even receive Ice Cream Sandwich?
I'm begging for help please. I'd sincerely appreciate ANY help and I'm willing to donate to anyone that will help achieve everything I'm missing out on to date.
Thank you in advance,
Jim G.
If keeping it stock is all you want, just download one of the stock firmwares and flash it with odin.
You may have to be a member to see this link but.....

^^^
They are the South Amercian firmwares currently out, but the European ones are newer if you want to try those.
Wow that was fast!
Wow! Thank you for the super fast reply. Can I D/L and use any stock firmware, I was hoping to use either the UK or German versions cuz they look like they get updates more often than the rest. If I'm wrong I stand corrected - could you please point out a version to use or am I stuck using the BZ version forever?
Oh Lord I hope not! * Forgive me - I saw you suggested the EU versions after I hurried to reply, my fault! *
Again, Thank You in advance,
Jim G.
Brazil Note.
I too have a Note with a ROM from Brazil. Since this is my first Android phone and I'm a noob so far, what will it take to get mine over to a euro one. Will this brick my phone? What region do you recommend for a US user? I understand that you meant Europe, but there a lot of choices like open, open euro or open germany or europ or german. Any directions or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
flshing a firmware for another region is fine... I offen just update to whereever has the newest update
But if i update to a stock rom from another country without changing csc, will i be able to update via kies whenever a newer csc update gets release online for my country? I got this ideia it wont be possible and will still need to change it again via Odin. It bother me if it wipes my phone each time i update. Still in kka/5 here with unlocked phone...

After updating to another regions ROM, You can just Odin back to the original stock ROM if you really wanted to, to restore KIES function for the original configuration.
But to be honest, the only time I ever have, is just for warranty purposes, I don't touch kies in any shape or form, there really is no need.
The way I work is, I like to use the stock ROMs, but rooted etc... So, when I got the phone, I rooted it, put the ClockWorkMod Recovery (CWM) on and now I just update my ROM with the repacked stock versions made to be flashed with CWM. They are exactly the same ROMs but rooted and deodexed, some I "believe" are multi CSC too.
Swyped from my finger, to your face on my Samsung Galaxy Note, using Tapatalk!
Thank you for all the help! I'm choosing to use the open-Germany (DBT) stock ROM cuz I've been keeping track of the ROM that was updated the most. I found it to be the German and UK versions but it seems the open-German edges it out.
I've got it all D/L'd and am actually waiting to get my notebook up and running after a CPU upgrade. Once I receive the thermal paste updating my Beast is the 1st order of business!
It sucks that the UBKK2 firmware never allowed any kind of an update, it makes me wonder if I'd even get the ICS update when it's released on March 15 or shortly thereafter. Of course that's according to the rumor mill and I'm simply referring to that since the SGSII's received their ICS earlier today according to SanFirnware.
So who knows? Again, I thank everyone fir their help and input.

[Q] Any compatible roms for 4.2.2 MGA?

I've been trying to find a rom that is compatible with 4.2.2 MGA, but most of the well known roms out there are for 4.4 upwards. I don't want to upgrade from 4.2.2, so the question is: are there any roms still for 4.2.2 MGA?
Did you check the Android development forums for your particular model of S4? That's the only way you'll get an Android 4.2.2 ROM, and it will take a fair amount of digging to find one, plus it will never get updates. Nobody develops for an old version of Android when a newer version is available.
I did, but I couldn't find any, and as you said, it takes a LOT of digging to find something. I was hoping a dev would have kept old files from their roms from that time. The threads I mentioned that either paid no attention, or allowed me to assume they had deleted their older versions.

Just a personal peeve of mine. I consciously choose to stay as far away from any kind of official update, when it comes to any kind of devices. Did the update for a family member's samsung galaxy tab 4 to the its latest update, saw it, hated it, and it only stengthened my decision to keep my galaxy s4 in its original rom. Like I said, I was hoping some of the devs would have kept some of their old rom files somewhere, but I guess none exists.
I guess you'll not be running Windows 10 anytime soon.
