[Q] Gingerbread thinks apps on SD card - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

When I go into Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> On SD Card on gingerbread it shows some apps there. I don't have any apps installed on the SD card (all internal) so it's odd to see anything there. Anyone else have apps that are installed internally show up there? The list was always blank on Froyo builds

Which build are you using???

On my gingerbread build i see also apps in "sd card". On the right side of the screen is a button you can press. Then you can copy apps to SD.
In "SD card" you can see apps which CAN be copied to the sd card. It means not, that these are ARE on your SD.

Sorry, but the above statement isn't true. The tab "On SD card" only shows what is on there - not what can be moved there.
I've had this before, when I was switching builds quite regularly. Some of them had less memory available, so I was moving apps to the SD card, but other builds had more memory available, so I didn't have to.
I did notice that the "On SD card" tab would show me apps that I had moved there on previous builds, despite them either being installed on internal memory, or not at all since my last flash.
My guess is that there's either some sort of cache on the SD card of apps installed there, or it's easy enough for the OS to parse the card and find them.
Have you ever moved any apps to the SD card before now?

MDJ's CM7 v 2.6. Though I think I noticed this when I was using HyperDroid also.

I install all apps to internal memory. I have it set to force to internal. Also, my SD card has been formatted a few times and apps still end up showing up in the SD card list.

I was searching for this answer and seeing this conflicting information, I checked the Android User Guide available on Android.com and it reads
Touch the USB storage or SD card tab.
The tab lists the applications that must be or can be stored on your phone’s USB
storage or SD card. Each application lists the amount of storage it uses on your
phone's internal storage (even when not stored there, all applications use at least a
small amount of internal storage).
Applications that are stored on your phone’s USB storage or SD card are checked.
The graph at the bottom shows the amount of memory used and free of your
phone’s USB storage or SD card: the total includes files and other data, not just the
applications in the list.

Since this is the first thread Google returns for these search criteria and the thread not being too terribly old, I decided to post and correct the misinformation..

how to move apps to storage card

I recently looked in settings/applications/manage applications. I have tried to move some applications into storage card but the option to move to sd card cannot be highlighted. How can apps be moved unto sd card?

It depends on whether the app developers have allowed move to SD, so not all apps can be moved on stock DHD.

Moved apps to SD Card, didn't free up space!

My NC was complaining that it was getting low on space. Lo and behold, the internal 1 GB partition was about full. I used Titanium Backup to move most of the apps to the SD card (100 apps). The NC thinks the apps are on the SD card (and I'm assuming they're actually there), but it didn't free up ANY space on the internal partition. It's like it moved the apps, but didn't delete the old files. Does anybody have any idea how I can actually free up this space? I can't move the files back from the SD card, because it says there's no room.

No, it's got "Move to phone". It seems to have actually moved them, but doesn't seem to have removed the original files from the internal space. I've got Root Explorer, any idea where the original files would have been installed, so I can check if they're still there?
Was playing around with Root Explorer, and it seems all the files were in /data/app in the main memory, not on the SD card. I was able to delete from there, and free up space, but now the apps won't run (since they're obviously gone). Apparently it didn't actually move them to SD card, though the system thought it did. Didn't delete TB, so I can replace the apps, but I've got to find some way of actually moving them to the SD card, or making the nook partition bigger.
What happens when you use "move to SD" from the "manage apps" application?
Rather than mess around moving Apps to SD I'd recommend the repartition option. Moving to SD was necessary with phones which were tight on internal memory but that doesn't apply to the Nook. Also it is always difficult to choose which Apps to move because they will stop working temporarily if you USB mount the SD card.
The normal 1GB data partition can get tight with a lot of apps installed. The Nook has plenty of internal memory so I repartitioned to 2GB data which gives a generous area for apps and 4GB for some basic media (pictures, music, video) and leaves the SD card free primarily for extra media, backups etc.
Following gives a guide to repartitioning. Make sure you have apps backed up before doing this.

That appears to actually move them. Not sure why titanium backup isn't. Managed to free up some space this way, but I think I'm going to repartition it, rather than have to shuffle stuff around to make room.
Can you simply just go to the applications setting and select move to sd card or does this cause problems? I did the veryGreen install of CM7 and also installed gapp but have not pulled my card back out or repartitioned it or anything since doing that. I have a 16GB card and want to get full use out of it but I like my apps and download a lot. Thanks.

Low on space ERROR!

Hi,
I guess the subject says it all.
To clarify, I've just got my new Note and I currently have Acer A100. I took the titanium apps backup folder and transfered it to the Note and did a titanium backup restore.
I've successfully restored 316 apps, but still have 84 apps left.
My System Storage says: 1.8gb used - 184mb free
USB Storage from Storage says: 11.07gb total space - 8.37gb available space.
I couldn't complete the titanium backup restore and have to turn the phone off/on in order to stop the FROZEN apps restore process on the 318th app out of 464ish.
Moreover, I can't install anything from the Market and I get unable to install for insufficient storage error.
Any ideas, help? And please don't say I've to install an external SD card since I'm not planning at the moment. My concern now: why this is happening?
BTW, I don't have Facebook app installed so I can clear the cache, and I already did Market clear cache, but no luck.
Thanks!

Move some apps to SD.
i had this issue when i first started loading my apps on the note. started getting low memory alerts after about 200mb was left then stopped loading any app when about 190mb was left. what the f*** my old htc desire had 147mb internal memory available for apps and would load apps till about 5mb was left on initial firmware then with updated firmware would allow apps to load only till about 15mb was left on internal memory.
anyway even i too had about 10gb left on the internal storage and still would get the low memory alerts. and just could not move apps to internal sd card with apps2sd pro or even the stock apps tool for moving apps to internal memory. my 32gb card was almost full so was stuffed till i deleted some stuff on card and then could move a bit to external card.
but somehow later, when installing / uninstalling apps it seems to have now moved some to internal sd storage dont know how it happened and i have more meroy on my external card now.
but phone does crash with freezing and only sorts itself out when card removed. happened a few days ago and again last night. works perfect when no sd card. card is sansidk 32gb and works fine on my htc desire. but the folder structure is a bit different from my htc desire and dont know if my htc desire folder structure being present on my card is causing issues and freezing and crashes. if not sorted then will put a new card and copy over stuff that i need.

As I said earlier, I don't want to insert an external SD card at the moment. I want to use it like any other phone/tablet that has more than 3/4 of the storage available... BUT, thanks for the suggestion!

I had the same exact thing!!!!!!!!!!!!
Around 190mb, my phone started to give that error.
So, I either had to install/uninstall apps and see if it moved them to internal storage, or I have to have an external SD card????
I just ordered a class 10 16gb sd card from AmazonBasics and I'm waiting for it. My problem is that I'm overseas and I want to use the phone fully without an SD card!!!!!!!!!!!
how big are the backups and what are you restoring? if you have loads of sms/mms etc then it will take up the internal space
the usb space you can ignore as that isnt part of the data space provided
The backup was 1.8gb. But I was restoring only the apps nothing else from titanium backup...
Is there away I can use the USB storage as internal storage for apps? And I mean not using an external SD card at ALL...???
Post with incorrect information.
I tried doing that, but it tells me that I need to insert an SD card!!!!

You have misunderstood move to SD option.
Gingerbread storage operate a bit different from Honeycomb.
The 16GB onboard storage in the Note is divided into two visible partitions, 2GB for storage apps and 11GB as SD card.
The move to SD option simply move the apps from the 2GB partition to the 11 GB partition, no external micro SD card is needed.
Just download App2SD and see which apps can be move to the 11GB partition to free up space for install extra apps.
Once Note get Ice Cream Sandwich update, hopefully we will not have this problem.

no your method didnt work for me even though i had 10gb free on usb internal memory and 190mb free on partition reserved for apps. app2sdmove pro and stock application manager would refuse to move any app to usb 11gb memory. my 32gb sd card was full so couldnt move there either. only after i deleted some data and made space on my external 32gb card could i move apps withh app2sd pro or the stock app manager.
but curiously later (2w later) somehow (i dont know) now about 155 apps seem to have moved themselves to internal memory (the 11gb usb memory present internally on the phone and now i have 10gb used up on the internal memory and similar amount free on my card. god knows how that happened.
now as my phone was crashing again last night have had to remove sd card from phone and phone working fine. will see whether to copy data to lapton and reformat the card in phone and then transfer back data or whether to use a new card.
but the app move to sd feature is certainly buggy with there being different areas to move the app to. now some of my apps are on internal 1.9gb memory, some are on my 11gb internal memory and some are on sd card. i have no contrl over which app goes where irrespective of whether i use stock app manager or app2sd pro.
any pointers anyone, how to force all apps to move to internal 11gb memory and not to external sd card?
Thanks for the clarification.
There must be something (some sort of process or an action) triggered the apps transfer to the internal storage!
Don't you think? Can't you think of anything that you've installed or did that made that happen?

dont know but the crashing usually starts at night uk time and always hangs when system media scanner is perpetually scanning then device crashes. cant remember what apps i uninstalled but most were reinstalled and seemed to work fine a few days. same phone has been phone all day today but the sd card has been removed since last night. am busy work wise till tomorrow so havent had the time to sort out the sd card. will see over the next few days.
regarding the apps moving to internal sd card. i just deleted some apps then reinstalled them then used the regular apps2sd pro to move to sd card, seems t work sometimes, but not at other times. same goes for the app settings menu. for example if i now without sd card in phone try the sd card move option, it does not move apps to internal 11mb but rather i get pop up saying no sd card. but dont know how the 155apps are already on the same 11gb on internal memory, but many are still on the 1.9gb space of partitioned internal memory and can be moved.
i already have google earth installed from the market and moved it to sd card. but thought that some bits of it remain on internal memory. but doesnt look like it. now without sd card if i visit market then google earth on market gives install option again inspite of having it already on my sd card and when i press instal it installs again onto 1.9gb of internal memory and when i try apps 2 sd option then i get pop up saying no sd card and doesnt move it to the 11gb internal memory.
dont know how to sort this issue. will try to figure it out over the next few days but hoping someone else can give some pointers how to move apps to 11gb internal memory.
out of the 303 app icons present on my noteapp screen (including all the ones that came with the phone) 128 are on external sd card, 155 are on internal 11gb card. dont know how some went to internal sd card and some went to external sd card. hope someone can help out to move all of them to internal 11gb memory.

This is not correct.
Apps to SD moves files from internal memory to /sdcard/external_sd/Apps2D.
This is the external SD card normally. (it's technically possible to mess with the device links to swap /sdcard and /external_sd though).
Data in /sdcard comes from applications which download their own data.
I.e. you run them and they say 'I need to download a bunch of data!'. For example, Asphalt 6. That data can't be shifted out and there is a definite possiblity of filling up your 10 gig partition with stuff like this.
This is one of the bigger faults of the Note, IMHO.
- Frank
That's what I thought...
It's one of Note's drawbacks in terms of usage of internal storage and there's no workaround as far as I know.

Moving aplications to SD Card i9505 (Samsung update way)

Hello,
I've been looking for an answer on the forums but the responses on this question seem downright stupid or at least completely off the mark. What i want to know is why when i try to move an application to the EXTERNAL SD CARD (Kingmax Class 10 32gb microsd) it says that it moves the application on the sdcard but when i try to view the folders and everything on the external sd CARD it's as if nothing is changed no folders are added and the size does not change. On the phone it says that the application is on the SD Card, is this a BUG or what exactly is going on?

problems with using sdcard as "portable storage" under marshmallow.

Hi, I have opted to use my sd card as "portable storage" rather than adopting it as "internal storage"
But it doesn't work as expected. Such as
1. Apps which previously allow data to be stored on sd card ( such as stock camera ), now simply
stores it in phone memory even though in the app, settings point to sd card.
2. All apps cannot be moved to sd card. Previously under lollipop, some apps can.
Cant find any options to do so under settings->storage & usb OR settings->apps. Is it still possible.?
If yes, what do I need to do?
Thanks
rooting will help ....!!! but dont know how to root.... ??? normal step of rooting not working.....
found this in lenovo forum:
In Marshmallow, you need to format you SD card as internal storage in order to move apps and that to all apps are not movable.
To make changes you can go to : Settings -> Storage -> Click on "SD Card" -> More -> Format as internal
Note : Make sure to take data backup before formatting your SD card, as all data from SD card will get erased when formatting.

Out of scope.
He's asking how to use sd card as 'portable storage' and not 'internal storage'.
I did the same for the camera, and photos/videos are stored in sd card, please check again.
In these 6.0 version for k3, no option in settings to move apps, but maybe will arrive later..
for some apps, you can move data from internal to sd card (like sygic).
Marshmallow another screwed fcuk, format as 'internal storage' r only options for moving apps/games to sd card.
