I have had my X for around 6 months and have wanted to flash a rom but have been scared to say the least! I have a nandroid of my phone which is up to date OTA, rooted, overclocked, and otherwise stock. My question is if I flash this rom and for some reason don't like it, can I restore with my nandroid and get my phone back to the way that it is without any issues? Also, does this rom delete my contacts and other information? I really like the backup assistant for all of my contacts (over 500). Thanks in advance for any answers and advice!

As long as you take a nandroid backup you are safe =) I recommend syncing your contacts to google...then no matter what rom you use, you can always pull your contacts back down. So yes, it will wipe out your contacts.
Let me know if you have more questions! =)

Yeah if you didn't like the liberty rom you could restore your nandroid backup and it will literally be exactly the same when you backed it up... regarding your issue about contacts...when you flash a new rom... once its done installing and boots up its like the first time you turned your phone on so yes everything will be deleted... if you're worried about apps download titanium back up pro and back up your apps and data.. or it will download all yours all from the market...your issue about contacts, personally i used the back up assistant first but ended up just using google contacts because its the easiest way to restore contacts when you flash roms every so often... that's my opinion, i may be wrong...and if you're scared about flashing a rom... i think everyone was on their first time... you just gotta go for it!

Just wanted to thank you guys for your input. I went ahead and installed the rom, used Titanium to back up my apps and so far I LOVE IT! It is ALOT faster than stock, just have to get used to the new UI. I also took the liberty since I was experimenting with something that I can't live without and did the uncapped data mod. I am hoping that it will make a difference as well. I have alot of new things to test and play with tonight, just hope that I can go to sleep so that I can make it to work tomorrow!
A special thanks to the developers for this rom, it is AWESOME!
Don't just limit yourself to liberty...i agree when people say roms are a personal choice... so give all of them a chance!

If I use titanium to backup my apps can I load my apps into the rom I decide to flash? And how do you go about it?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Yeah if you back up your apps with titanium pro..you just restore them once you flash the rom...ill make a nandroid of roms i like... but i always stick to apex... i like some blur stuff...
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I recently took the leap and flashed my first rom a few days ago too. I ended up going with Apex and like it much better than stock so far. I am thinking of doing like hullie said above and trying out some different ones in the coming weeks like Liberty and GummyJar. It's definitely scary at first, but once that first boot up was complete, the look on my face was like a child on Christmas morning.
I agree-was scared at first like getting my first xxxxx! Lol-anyway, now its second nature as long as you have your backup. Try darkslide rom. Two versions. Blur and blurless..

Correct. By default I don't believe any of the custom ROM's (just a guess..can't recall for sure) come with google maps installed. You must pull this down yourself.

Yeah, installing your first ROM can be quite nerve-racking, but once you've done it you say to yourself, 'that's it? i was so worried about that for nothing!".
I'm currently on my first ROM, which is Liberty, and although I love it, I can't use the camcorder for some reason to record movies. I tried installing both the aosp camera and blur camera, but both just FC.
the very minute before you install the rom make a nandroid and remember to ALWAYS wipe the phone before installing the rom. if you dont like the rom, reinstall dxbootstrp from the market and recover your nandroid.
as for your contacts: screw backup assistant. sync ALL your contacts with google and they will be automatically on your phone as soon as you sign in with you google account.

Did you update to the 2.3.340 update before installing LIberty? I was running Liberty on top of 2.3.15 and this is due to an incompatible library (.so) file in /system/lib

Haven't considered searching or reading stickies or existing threads have you?
You might look into this ROM - its basicly what you have but pre stripped of the ATT apps, a few needed apps and a few well needed ui tweaks. Highly reccomend it and it works with the Android Market showing all apps:

Just load the latest liberated rom from recovery. It is stock with the crap removed.
No I just want to remove bloatware, I know that Rom is stock LIKE but still has some issues. I have flashed every HTC phone I have ever owned and there is a endless cycle it seems like every cook keeps sending out new version fixing what was missing in the last release. And no matter how perfect their Rom is there is always something glitchy or something doesn't work. So with this phone atleast until I familiarize myself wit the android OS I want to stay stock.
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
Why am I not getting alerts when someone replies.
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
First, you're wrong about that ROM. It may be semantics, but that ROM is stock meaning it's taken the stock ROM (kernel) and the additions are merely the most commonly requested features, e.g. removal of bloatware, ability to sideload, etc.
Second, for just removing apps go here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=735255 And while you might be an Android noob the rules of the xda forums are the same regardless of OS. Search before asking, and don't create new threads unnecessarily. If you have any questions about that specific process reply in that thread.
And a note specific to the rom I listed, as I came from WM too, when you update to the newer release of the rom you can opt to keep the phone as is (apps, files, etc). So its not like you are starting from scratch each time you update. I am on the R012 latest realease with ZERO issues so far and I am an avid user of all the features. Yes rooting your phone and updating the rom is harder than a WM executable... the first time. Every update after that is simply a reboot, flash on the phone and finish booting, much easier!
you mean you dont have to set everything back up again.....
Some you do, some you dont. I just updated my liberated build R006 to R012 and at first thought the update didnt take. But isntead, it updated the core without loosing everything. So awesome, every WM rom update wiped my phone out, truly sucked. Long live Android!
I went ahead and flashed the liberated Rom and it seems to be fine I had some problemswith my contacts but worked it out. The only thing is it doesn't have the over the air update on it so now I am going to have to flash another Rom when it is added. Never ending cycle. But if it doesn't reset every thing like you said then it should be no problem.. I just remember every flash on WM meant resetting all your stuff back up. Thanks for the input.

I have a droid 2 that i rooted, have clockwork recovery installed, and deodexed.
Somewhere along the line, it seems like my contacts app has been broken. When I try to get into contacts, the app closes about a second after it opens. I can get into my contact list via the contact search or the dialer, but you can't add contacts from that view. I tried going back to an earlier backup via clockwork but that hasn't fixed it.
Has anyone else seen this problem? I guess if worse comes to worse I'd be willing to go back to the stock rom...if that is my only option if someone could give me an idea of where to look for that I'd appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,
Andrew
So you are on stock ROM deodexed? If not please let us know what ROM you are on.

You shouldn't go back to a 2.2.0 backup it could cause problems after you've been on 2.3.2 but I don't know this for a fact. Just know that things might not work correctly if you restore to 2.2.0.
If you try the 2.2.0 backup and things don't go well I'd have the 2.3.2 SBF handy just in case. That way you can just go to the bootloader and flash the 2.3.2 sbf and you'll be at factory and the problem shouldn't be there unless the sbf's contacts is broken too.
Thanks for the advice. I ended up buying contact group manager from the market. Its a good app for 1.95
I'll have to get the most current sbf just in case.

So, here we go... So its said, I have upgraded to the TMo 2.2 Froyo release, OneClick rooted my Vibrant, as well as installed BusyBox, but thats all. I don't even have CWM installed (or know how/where/why to install it)...
Let me also say, I have come from an HD2, and with that I flashed ROMs and rooted/etc., so I have some experience, just not with this Vibrant and it's ROM's...
So, after reading about the lag fixes, I think I should go with VooDoo to speed this thing up. However, I have spent days installing and customizing apps, logging into sites, etc, so I REALLY don't want to wipe the phone and have to start from scratch. Is there a way to install VooDoo without having to do that? With this Vibrant, if I install a ROM, I will be overwriting/killing the current one, then have to start from scratch, yes?
Also, why go with a non-stock ROM? I don't mind the bloatware (I use Slacker all the time in fact), so that's not a big issue for me, although I wouldn't mind killing some of it, especially that Avatar icon... Why would I go with an aftermarket ROM aside from the bloatware? Is there a reason that negates the danger of bricking a phone that is NOT under warranty and I cnnot afford to replace if it dies?
I did searches, and I have been reading all day, but while there are MANY how-to articles, those questions aren't blatantly answered... lol
Thanks all...

Flashing a kernal w/ voodoo won't wipe anything. But the reason you would flash a ROM is simple. They're better. Better looking, faster, with more options in every way. Plus there is now 2.2.1 not just the 2.2 you just installed. So do it and just get used to signing in to all your sites and apps over and over, cuz once you start flashing, you can't stop!

Odin a new kernel with voodoo if you are unable to flash with the 3e recovery.
I am currently running Official 2.2 with stock kernel with voodoo.
Does a stock rom image for the continuum exist that can be flashed with Odin and not CWM? I dont think my phone is bricked cause I can get into the download and recovery screens. I just cant do anything from the recovery screen its stuck.
Im either gonna fix this or smash this phone to pieces. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Check that out.... Flash with Odin.. Then find (in the Continuum Android Development section) the DL17 update zip, and put that on your sdcard (named update.zip)...
Then you should be good to go...
However, i highly suggest you getting CWM working... Recovering is a lot easier with it... If you are having difficulty go log onto the IRC (http://webchat.freenode.net/) with the #Samsung-Continuum and i will help you out
You are my effin hero... All I needed was the kernel and it fired right up. Ill be keeping these files close cause Im sure Ill need them again.
Thank you!!!!

Lmao, no problem man.. haha.. Thank imnuts too for all of his development
BTW: If you stop by the IRC i will help you get cwm up and working.. Then you can flash themes, make backups, and flash my awesome Softkey Modifications
Any idea why I cant access data? Im on the phone with verizon but still no luck..
Also cant access the sd card from my pc and wifi on the phone will not connect..
Verizon is stumped they told me to take it back to the store for a replacement..
What a long day lol =)

From what I know when you root and run different ROMs you cant get OTAs. But its simple enough to restore your phone to stock
So root away!
And besides...once Gingerbread does come out the custom ROMs built off of that will make it worth it to root again
So check my signature for qbkings how to videos and get to it
Sorry I am really at both rooting and posting threads. How would i go about returning to stock when 2.3 releases? and then could I do the same process to re root after i get the ota? and I will check your videos, thanks for all your help man.

Yes, and the rooting process for Epic Gingerbread us still under discussion. If you upgrade from a custom froyo rom to a custom gb rom, you'll bypass having to root again and lose minimal data.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Do you mean the current gb roms that have been leaked and are out for rooted phones now? or do you mean when samsung themselves release the update that the update itself will be available for rooted phones in a rooted state itself? and if you meant the current gb updates that have been release are they smooth running or still a bit glitchy since they aren't the finished product? I apologize if any of this is common sense haha
If you root now and put a custom 2.2 rom on phone then you can just wait a day or two after the ota gb release before ace or someone else releases a custom rom based on the ota gb release. Then you will be able to flash the upgrade and not lose data. I would suggest Midnight, bonsai or syndicaterom frozen by acs.
Samsung Epic SyndicateROM Frozen 1.1
I actually have no idea what rom I am going to to go with after i root it haha. Ive just had this phone for a few months and feel like doing something new, i also want to put a free wifi app on there so i dont have to pay sprint more for a feature i had free on my old tp2. like i said I am a complete rookie to this besides putting cfw on my old psp and having android on my tp2 , and that means that if i just wait for the gb rom to come out complete after someone makes a custom for it than il just have to come back to the great xda and upgrade myself?
The newest syndicate rom would be right up your alley. Read the instructions, watch the video and you'll be fine.

Some ROMs back up your data, and others do not. It depends on the ROM. You should do a simple root, and backup with Titanium backup and do a Nandroid backup as well. Just in case. Apps and contacts usually are available when you log back into your gmail but if you save contacts on phone instead of google they won't. You can also export your contacts to google or your sd card.
Ask away. But also look at the videos.
the contacts are not that big of a deal since i do have it saved on my gmail, but i didn't think my apps could be saved and transfered. and random question i have a few games saved on tiger gba and psxondroid, would i lose those save files saved on the emulator on the new rom? I know i don't loose any of that on the root or so my research lead me to believe.

Again that depends on the ROM. Some, like Bonsai, now back up and then restore your data. If you root and use Titanium backup you will be able to restore data to those games if they get wiped.

Most anti-virus and some firewalls see rageagainstthemachine as a trojan so will block it and sometimes delete it.
