So I don't have a link but you can find it over at Phandroid that the Galaxy S line will be getting a gingerbread update at the end of Q1 start of Q2. The US carriers might have delayed froyo because they knew this update was coming and if it is true Samsung is trying to extort money from them for the update maybe they just will skip froyo an g straight to gingerbread to same themselves some money by providing 1 update as apposed to 2. This sound like it could be plausable to me and would definetely reduce some of my hatred of samsung. What about the rest of you would you be less pissed at samsung and the US carriers if this was their move regardless of the horrible PR disaster so far?

I wouldn't be surprise if samsung releases gingerbread faster than ever.. because theres less bug in the modem, android sources, and kernel.

Samsung will definitely be updating our phones to 2.3 SOON to take advantage of our (For now) useless gyroscope which is supported in android 2.3. It may have taken a while for 2.2, but seeing as they have most bugs worked out in that 2.3 should be a breeze.

I think they are actually referring to the six-axis gyroscope as the accelerometer... but nevertheless, they say it has a gyroscope.

It does have a gyroscope AND accelerometer. It was a selling point Samsung talked up at CTIA 2010 last March when the Galaxy S series was announced.

Didn't Samsung come out and say that wasn't true. Not saying we should believe everything they say...but I thought that was proven to be a false rumor.
But I would be nice if we were bumped straight to Gingerbread. Maybe that would change the thoughts of the tools crying about how they'll never buy Samsung again.

It's posted here, so the only thing we know for sure is that it 100% isn't going to happen as reported.
Really!? Does anyone for a second believe that US will ever have Gingerbread on Epic? Just because Samsung releases GB doesn't mean Sprint will. Samsung released 2.2 for Galaxy a long time ago and we are still sitting on our hands over here...Europe has been on 2.2 since November.
Who cares when Samsung gets it out, it matters when Sprint does...and knowing them it will never be available. Even if it would be, we won't know anything until it is on our phones as Sprint gives absolutely no clue as to when updates will occur.
I've been on DK28 since last year. I have found very few flaws/issues present. Of those issues, none seemed to be a major hold-up on release. Two months later and the developers taking care of this project still have nothing to give us.
Wake me when the conversation and/or rhetoric changes. Until then, I'll be hibernating on the Viper release, which although has a couple minor issues is 1000X's better than anything Sprint will ever give us!!!
I give up on Sprint and Samsung and will be going back to T-Mobile and HTC after this crazy fiasco is finally finished (yes, you don't have to tell me, I know that they are in the same boat as Sprint right now for this POS phone, but they never screwed me or withheld info from me when I was with them).
Sprint/Samsung Q2 = December 2011. I don't think they quite understand dates, or basic fractions, unless of course they are in your contract.

Unlocked users also
Hello Guys,
I just ordered this phone unlocked. Since this is my first Samsung phone (I had an iPhone 3G) I am wondering if AT&T will push the update to me and since my phone was shipped from Hong Kong I would also like to know whether there is a download link from Samsung's site for patches and firmwares (official).
Side question; For those using an unlocked Galaxy S in the US, is there any 3G (data) issue you are noticing? how is performance and availability of 3G with 1900Mhz spectrum?
If your carrier doesnt push the update to you, you should be able to get it through Samsung Kies once its been released.
Well we can only hope for this to be real. Sure would be nice

Ummm.... Yes there is something that will stop them... It's called "Paperwork".
We'll see, would be nice tho, especially when it comes with some new drivers/updates to iron out the little bugs
Im thinking in this, we shouldn't forget about Samsungs tablet device, which seems like a big Samsung Galaxy S. The rumour there is that is going to come with FroYo 2.2 right from the off.
Makes sense to converge the software, so there is a very real possibility Samsung have been working on a FroYo release for a while.

As well as the hoofing great big ones
While they are at it, why not
While I doubt we will see Froyo in the next week or two it looks like they may have had some models at the Samsung launch even running Froyo. I noticed in Phonearena's preview of the Samsung Vibrant they tilted the phone to the right and it went into landscape. Unless something has changed I thought this was only possible with Froyo so maybe they are closer to releasing it then we think. I can't post a link to the video because I am new here but you can catch the rotation to the right at the 19 second mark.

I'll believe it when I see it. Samsung has a HORRIBLE track record when it comes to updates.
HTC and Motorola have already upgraded all of their high end android devices (the Droid Incredible just got the update today). Samsung already has 2.2 running on their 7" tablet, so it is pretty fair to criticize them for being slower than their American and Chinese counterparts.
I think there's a fair chance that T-mobile will release the G2 (Sept. 29, 2010) before the Vibrant gets 2.2 update.
Samsung is most likely waiting for all of the Galaxy S phones to be released before pushing froyo. With the Epic coming this weekend and the Fascinate probably coming 9/9, froyo isn't far away. Mid September, about a week after the Fascinate release is my guess.

They've also been out longer... I'm also pretty sure 2.2 is already done for the U.S. Just working out extra kinks in it so naturally 2.2 on the tab that'll be released later on would have 2.2. It had to derive from somewhere. Just sit tight everyone it'll be here soon. If Samsung delivers on time then we would have the shortest wait for a 2.2 update out of all the Androids. I'm definitely okay with that.
I'm more interested in a fix ASAP for the calendar bugs (events are deleted when they're edited, etc.) which I've mentioned on another thread. Hope that comes along with the Froyo update. (Or, heck, just give us the standard Android calendar app -- the Samsung one looks nice, but I can't touch events on it due to these bugs.)
i hope we get it in september, but not holding my breath. samsung and tmobile (usa) have not 100% committed to giving us 2.2 in september... so no, its not confirmed

Yep, the joke is on us suckers, who go fooled by Samsung's lofty statements about the Galaxy S being their mobile game-changer.
Gingerbread will change the UI dramatically, and thus it will really change the way people use Android. OS 2.1 and 2.1 still feel like work in progress, and even Google claims that OS 3 will finally take the platform to a mature stage.
But I am losing faith that we'll see Gingerbread on the Galaxy S. By the time we finally get Froyo, Gingerbread will probably be officially released.
Then Samsung will EOL the Galaxy S, repackage it with a slightly faster chip version and go to market trying to get new suckers to buy the Gingerbread version, or old suckers to upgrade to it....
Phew!
If the release it for the galaxy s 2 or whatever it will be much easier for the devs to port over than it is for them to get group working now since samsung will most certainly keep very similar hardware in the next iteration of the phone.

Hopefully true.
But there is little excuse for Samsung being so slow to push upgrades. It's been 5 months since the OFFICIAL Froyo release, and Samsung must have had access to betas way earlier.
It will also be inexcusable if they don't upgrade the current Galaxy S to Gingerbread, since it's such a major upgrade and the phone hardware is compliant with it.
I am grateful for the devs here, but at the same time, I just went back to stock JI6 (just with a standard Android lockscreen mod), and frankly the battery life improved a little, plus the phone seems a bit more stable overall.
At this point I just want stability and the latest released firmware and OS. And it's Samsung's responsibility to provide it in a timely manner.
GOOD NEWS! for Galaxy S owners, the Gingerbread man will be coming to Samsung Most popular smartphone (Galaxy S) Flag-ship.
Remeber, Earlier this Month, Samsung Mobile India Twitter feed tells the fact that the mobile will get Android 2.3 (Screenshot below), The company kept it short and simple with a brief tweet: "Yes we will get gingerbeard on GalaxyS." but no other info announced from the company about the update. As we know Samsung has released the Froyo to All users on Many worldwide Carriers on 11,November 2010 and All of them is Now enjoying Froyo and Waiting to taste the Gingerbread.
Well, Today we Got a Confirmation That Samsung Galaxy S is Getting Another Update probably on February,2011 may be Earlier and this update will have Android 2.3 Gingerbread onboard. Leaked ROMs and Videos may start rolling-out on January so Stay tuned, Enjoy your Froyo... Gingerbread is coming on the way to Make "YouMobile".
Gingerbread brings with it an improved user interface which is slicker and more streamlined, along with better power management. It also boasts one-touch word selection and copy/paste, support for multiple cameras and goodies such as NFC (Near Field Communications).

Froyo has been out since October/early November, officially released by Samsung. Blame your carrier if your not getting the update. Contrary to belief, Samsung is quicker than HTC when pushing out updates, it's just that HTC devices have a much larger userbase on XDA, hence the quicker porting/updating.

Both of these are hardware dependant and both the Galaxy S doesn't have. The multiple camera support is for using with taking 3D pictures and/or recording 3D movies. And NFC is there so that android devices can attempt to get ahead of the iphone5 which is said to support it but these needs a dedicated chip.

I have had one problem with this phone since purchase in September. You need to try a custom rom with a kernel upgrade, not like there is any lag in stock JPU.
I don't get how so many people complain about this great device when it can be pimped out within 30 minutes.

Some Galaxy still don't have an official Froyo update yet. And the ones that do are still laggy. The 2.2.1 is finally a ROM that isn't laggy but its not official its a leak.
If Samsung comes out with Gingerbread they will screw it up. I'd rather have the community come up with a basic Gingerbread that works. And the community will do it long before Samsung does.
dude this is samsung, we all saw what happened with froyo and all the delays.

From ComputerWorld
"Samsung Galaxy S [UPDATED 4/7/11]: All signs point to Gingerbread being in the cards for Samsung's popular Galaxy S line of phones. That includes the Samsung Captivate on AT&T, Samsung Epic 4G on Sprint, Samsung Vibrant on T-Mobile, and Samsung Fascinate on Verizon (which as of now has yet to even receive Froyo). Rumors started popping up in January that some Galaxy S phones could see an Android 2.3 upgrade as early as March or April. Samsung's official Samsung Mobile India Twitter account, meanwhile, has stated numerous times that the Galaxy S will receive Gingerbread -- version 2.3.3 -- but that a definite launch date has not been set. Samsung's Romanian Facebook page has issued similar promises. In late March, software said to be a leaked version of Samsung's official Galaxy S Gingerbread update surfaced on an Android developers' forum, heightening speculation that a rollout could be near. In addition to all of that, Samsung's Finnish site has now posted a news release stating that Gingerbread will reach Galaxy S handsets "in mid-April.""
Another good article to read from Lifehackerwith a spreadsheet of release dates.
-Troll
lol "Troll".
Well, let's see, even if gingerbread were CLOSE to being released, don't think of the Galaxy S as a sign.
First of all, the Galaxy S is Samsung's MAIN FLAGSHIP device, AND Galaxy S's are only released in Europe, I believe.
So therefore, even if Samsung had a finished product of 2.3 for us by mid-april, Sprint's going to have to add their crap to it and **** it up some more, make it even more buggier than Samsung achieved, and send an OTA that will have to be pulled the day after it comes out because it'll fry people's phones. SOOO, if we WERE to get Gingerbread, I'd say by August-Mid September at the earliest.
Sorry for bringing your hopes down...just stating the facts.

I think Im more excited about cm7 than an official gingerbread from Samsung

Official Gingerbread, would not only speed up CM7 development but allow for OCing kernels for CM.

I support and agree 100% with this message.
I'm just hoping they get 4G figured out. I live around the Chicago area, so to have it and then not...well, that would kind of suck. Not sure I'm willing to give it up, even for the sweetness CM7 is/will be.

Very true! I would much rather have a fully functional CM7 than a Samsung/Sprint GB
I'm more excited about gb miui!

Looks like more pundits taking 'twitter' as a valid source... and one for OTHER COUNTRIES that use the i9000.... the SAME as the rumor about froyo from what, samsung Twit UK??? None of the Twits in the article said anything about the US variants, just the writer of the article... typical... tech media reach so far for a story. Besides, I wouldn't even trust a US Twit, look at the SamsungJohn thing... they could just be sharing their feelings like when they talk about how good their sushi was today... social networking crap isnt news, its crap. Facebook is not a government insider... its just a site for douchebaggery.
+1 on CM and MIUI! But GB source for them would be good, no?
I'd expect a GB port from the Nexus S 4G long before we get anything official...

Eh, the only thing that the nexus s 4G may help us is the 4G working much earlier than expected. That's pretty much the only similarity
