New pocketPC user. Got the Tilt a couple of days ago. First post, so forgive me. Very PC literate - still learning on the pocketPCs. Testing out ROMs now, thanks to all of you.
When I bought my case (Krusell), I just added on an aftermarket car charger (Fosmon). But I've been reading some of the posts about blown USB ports and a few other issues that seem like they could be power related. As a noob, did a ton of searching on the forum and can't find where anyone has given any opinions about aftermarket chargers. Part of me says stick to HTC or even AT&T brand because they are made for the unit (although an actual HTC is a pain in the ass to find and get shipped to me in Florida for an upcoming trip). Another part says they're all probably made in two factories in China and all I'm doing is paying more than twice as much for the same unit. Just don't want to risk having a problem on my new baby.
Any opinions?
I've been quite happy with my VersaCharger Pro from Boxwave -- works as a wall or car charger, and can put out the 1000 mA the Tilt needs.

Bingo! I've used Audiovox(HTC), Motorola and Blackberry home chargers, Motorola and no-name car chargers, my work laptop and my home desktop and all have charged my Tilt with no problem at all.
I'm interested in this particular topic too !
It's actually quite hard to get the specs (current in A and voltage in V) for official car chargers ! (and quite hard for many chargers).
The official wall charger gives 1 A and 5 V.
It would seem that you don't find that many mini usb chargers providing 1A.
You can find some on ebay but then most would provide... 5.5 V... could that arm the Kaiser ? I wonder, if anyone's got an idea.
Going for a lower current would mean the charging would be much slower.
Some extra notes about USB car chargers. Usually they will only provide 500mA and you won't have them work well with a regular sync cable (usb <-> mini usb) except if you mod them by welding two pins in the mini usb part (look for more information on the hermes section of this forum).
Today I had someone tell me that the best option for a car is actually an inverter with a home charger plugged into it. They said that Li-Ion and other rechargeables aren't meant to be charged via DC and that's why they sometimes (albeit rarely) brick via car charging. However, an inverter will prevent that. Sounds like BS to me, but I am not knowledgeable at all. Thoughts on this?

I flag BS! The charging circuits for the li-ion batteries are not built into the charger itself. Its built into the device. The purpose of the plug-in chargers is to provide enough current/regulated power to run the device and charger it.
I'm in the UK and want to save $20 on the charger
I have a couple of Micro USB wall chargers that i use on my blackberry. They will fit the N1 and plug straight into the wall. Would they be safe to use, to charge my N1. (These charges are rated 750mHA).
I know the N1 will be supplied with a micro USB cable. I also have an IPhone wall socket plug head, the ones where you just put the USB cable into the plug and then it goes into the wall. Are these safe to use too, for charging the N1?
Thanks
the Nexus one connector is standar microUSB and therefore will work with standard microUSB cables and chargers.
So there is no type of resistor or transformer in the official plug head? ... to restrict power. I thought there would be as my blackberry charger has a 750mha rating on it.
I can understand the USB cable will work as its a limited power output from a laptop port. But just wanted to check the official wall outlet plug current isn't being restricted. The last thing i want to do is fry my new N1.
Cheers,
Just plugged mine into my old nokia classic micro usb and it is charging fine
The specs for the wall charger are 5V and 1A.
http://www.htc.com/europe/product/nexusone/specification.html
do what i did. remove the charger from your basket and use the supplied USB with an old htc charger if you have one. If not get one for a few quid from ebay why spend $20 when you can get one for $5 odd from the market/ebay.
I can only speak anecdotally, but I used a Blackberry Storm charger and nothing exploded
this mini, micro, A B stuff is annoying. to clarify for my simple mind, will usb cables that fit into my G1 fit into the N1? or is it a different size?
Last year, Micro USB was decided as the open standard for cell phone chargers, so this should be replacing Mini USB as seen on earlier phones (BlackBerries, G1) in instances where the port isn't.. some.. proprietary crap.
Edit:

No. The G1 used Mini USB, this is Micro USB. The phone comes with a charger and USB (USB-A 2.0 to Micro USB 2.0) cable.
It's not propitary so it will work with any other charger.
It's a funny thing to find. It's too new to be widely available
I went looking for a car charger and a straight USB A->Micro B cable. The former I found by poking in all the packages for different phones until I found it (found a Samsung charger that uses it, although they did want nearly £30 for the damned thing). The USB A->Micro B I drew a blank - the more clueless salesmen tried to convince me that I was mistaken and I meant Mini!
I thought the blackberry used them but I looked in the pile of blackberry cables the local shops had and they were all mini. Even my local electronics store has every kind of USB imaginable *except* micro.
Edit: Found one! (might be useful for UK users). It's out of stock though... http://www.cableuniverse.co.uk/catalog/cables/USB-A-to-Micro-USB-B-Cable.html
Just so you guys know, not all micro USB's are the same. I bought a car charger from a local Tmo store last week (I forget what phones it was for), and although it "worked" when the plug was perfectly perpendicular to the phone, it had quite a bit of lateral play (which the OEM plug does not), meaning anytime it moved in the car, it would stop charging.
I returned it, and am now just waiting for HTC to decide to manufacture accessories for this ever increasing bundle of worry...
I am using a TomTom charger for my N1, also the HTC hero and the Motorola Droid chargers works to charge my N1.

Seems like it was just a poor quality charger. If it's a micro USB, it should be built to specific specifications. I already bought a few chargers (including a car charger) and cables (for work, home and travel), and they all work perfectly. Technically ALL micro USBs should be the same, unless the manufacturer didn't follow the standards.

Hah, just my luck; I pick up the one out of spec micro USB charger in the entire city!
Although, it must be that particular T-Mobile supplier, as I went to another store and test fitted the same charger, and it had excessive wiggle as well. Either that or my phone is just lame...
I just got a universal charger in Tesco for £5 that has changeable heads (Micro, Mini, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Nokia 2mm)
Works perfect
- The cable is standard USB. You can use it to charge the phone from your PC, or use another micro USB cable or charger you have
- The Nexus comes with a US 2 pin charger that is dual voltage - works in UK and US. Just spend 50p and get a US to UK convertor plug.
- The charger is rates 5v 1A, so if you have another microUSB charger with the same voltage use that.
I find charging from the charger results in more battery life than USB. The only explanation is charge rate because USB is 500mA and the charger is 1000mA
PS. I removed the UK charger from the order too. You get the US charger regardless in the box.
I lost my usb cable and charger. I need to get a replacement. Where do I get such a thing?
THX!

Most Micro-USB cables will do, as long as you make sure they work for synching data, not just charging. Apparently some cheap ones will only charge, no synch data. You can find them at Best Buy or computer stores. I've even seen them at office supply stores and Target. Or you can buy them online at any number of places, like Monoprice, Amazon or Newegg.
Similarly, any charger that has a USB port will work with a Micro-USB cable to charge the phone.
So this cable is called a "Micro-USB" Cable?
And it is not some proprietary thing from HTC?
Thank God!

Micro USB is pretty well standardized. I use the charge/sync cable from my Logitech MX revolution mouse and it works just fine.
One thing I would recommend is NOT going to a t-mobile store. Carrier accessories are often 10x + more expensive than from other stores, especially compared to online. Its just goddamn highway robbery the prices they sell those things for lol.
Yeah, the micro-USB interface is an industry standard (in fact, all future cell phones manufactured for use in Europe are required to use it). Very useful for the cable portion (if you check around online or in third-party stores, you can usually pick up one of the Blackberry cables for only a couple of bucks).
One thing you should take note off when buying the charger portion though is supported amperage. The USB spec is limited to only 500mA, so that's what many of the generic chargers will output. I think the HTC charger is 1A though. 500mA should be fine if you are only going to charge while the phone is off, but if you will be using the phone heavily while plugged in, you'll probably want the 1A variety (also charges faster).

USB is a standard and the connectors are the same but I agree that some cables might have different connector covers so it might push agains the case and force the usb connector.

Sorry that's crap.
A micro USB connector is a standard part, unless you are buying horribly cheap junk maybe, they will all fit fine.
I have used several cables and not hurt the phone at all.
I buy a kignstons usb duo 3.0 64gb for 22 dólars.... that's means I can't use in my S6?
using my OTG usb stick with the S6.... Works. It's a bull**** comment from the repair service...
Lets just hope this won't be an S3 disaster where the USB port was a weak point. My GFs S3 had the S3 USB port problem, where it would start charging very slow due to bad USB port and a week ago, stopped charging completly, unless kept in a specific angle. On my S3, all cables worked that I had, for hers, only 1 cable made a "good" connection.
the repair service has got it half right
regarding physical damage to the port:
what you want to make sure is that other USB cables don't cause stress to the USB port... as you may have noticed, different microUSB cables have different size plugs (the same microUSB metal connector, but the plastics surrounding it are different sized)... we must make sure our cases don't interfere with the cable plug (many case manufacturers only design their case with the original samsung cable in mind, which might not be big enough for plugs like the monoprice microUSB ferrite cable, which has a large rectangular plug)
all the above is moot if you don't use a case
edit: and update with a video to explain what i was mumbling about
regarding electrical damage to the port:
you'd be safe to stick with OEM quality USB AC adapters or other big-name (Anker makes a lot of them) USB AC adapters... but STAY AWAY from those no-name cheap china adapters!! those have poor power filtering, electrical noise, poor grounding, etc....
Just because it fits in the same hole and has the same pins doesn't mean it's compatible. Using a cable not made for fast charging on an S6 would be like trying to jump start a car with a lamp cord. It could overheat at the cable, connector or battery. That's why using the wrong charger or cable voids most warranties. Here's one such case, if you are interested:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/general/oneplus-one-melted-t3008581
The OP is lucky Samsung honored his warranty.
I call BS. MicroUSB is an industry standard. If they were not compatible not only would they not be able to call it that, but they would be subject to sanctions for violation the requirements for using standard cables ports of which the MicroUSB is currently is.
While you might not get the faster charge if you don't use their cable and their charger unless you are using very poorly made cables you will be just fine.
I charge my s6 most of the time with a BlackBerry charger for one of their discontinued tablets. 1.8A with 6ft fixed cable, I have 6 of them, they charge everything from tablets to phones. The white "short" Samsung cable and charger is in the box.

It is a valid warning, I live I EU and I think that I can trust shops here to sell me good product ... I use original mini USB cables for all my gadgets and all of them are the same but even dispite that on my ex phone I had flimsy connection due to some damage to USB port even I used original cable and I give credit to my using the phone during charging and the fact that most of us use our little finger as a stand and then the USB tend to move a bit and damage is caused...
The truth is that not all are the same as some are faster and some are not ... But in the meaning of just the metal part of actual connector they should be the same by law if EU ...
Considering that in mind the only rule in buying accessory like cables should be are they been through a regulatory channels ....

And I've owned a LOT of phones (probably change my phone a minimum of twice a year)
This is not correct, at all!
Micro USB cables are a standard and every cable should be good to use in the S6. I remember a couple years ago how glad I was when I swapped my original Asus Transformer tablet with its proprietary connector for a newer device because for once all of our phones and tablets had the same microUSB connector and we could use all our chargers interchangeably. Now with the 5x it's a return to the old days. Right now we have chargers in a few places around the house plus in our two cars, so anything can get a top-up anywhere with the same cable.
Once the 5x gets here, it'll mean that I have to have a second cable -- if not charger -- anywhere I want to charge it, including a second cable/charger stuffed into the consoles on the cars. At this point in time, a USB-C port might as well be considered "proprietary!" Yes, the changeover has to start somewhere, but why am I always on the bleeding edge?
Another problem is that most of my Nexus 5 charging is done on my wireless charging pad, and that's going bye-bye as well.
I am gladly upgrading to 3A fast charging... technological advancements, yo. Be ready for fast charge wireless next....
It's the age old problem... "WTF, I just installed 3 gas lamps and now they come out with this thing called electricity!"
And cables are so cheap. At least most of my micro USB cables are beat to hell and falling apart. It'll be nice to have a phone where the charge cable stays in while I'm driving.
This really isn't new at all. Google is doing us a favor by going ahead and moving us along into the next technology phase. It does suck that all those spare cables you accumulate from Amazon over the years suddenly, at once, become useless, however, you can get cheap ass adapters still, extensions etc... just have to do it. Do it once and it's done. Get everyone a Nexus 5x or 6p and load up on new cables/docks/chargers etc... bring on the fun!
I'm looking forward to the switch. I remember when micro usb became the standard. I was so happy, because HTC used to use that weird charging port, which was almost mini-usb (I think), but it had that squared off corner, so you couldn't use the cables for any other mini usb device. I'll just buy a couple adapters for my existing chargers, and be done with it. I'll accumulate other usb c cables as time goes on.
That's how I felt when I first got the oneplus two but first thing I bought was a micro USB female to usb-c male adapter off amazon. Didn't have to replace any of my original micro USB cables. Plus Google will give you a usb-c cable so that'll do for now as far as I'm concerned. I recommend this adapter if you still want to use your existing micro USB cables.
In case you weren't aware all cell phones manufactures have to start using type c cables in 2016 in Europe, that includes Apple. So a year from now type c will be the normal

Yeah, it's not like this is a weird, or custom cable. This is the new USB standard. It's like you're complaining when we started swapping serial ports for USB. It might be inconvenient, but it is better, and sooner or later, everything will be using it. May as well start stocking up on cables now. I already ordered a few.
I think the best cable available is this $8.99 yoozon one that Amazon sells. Type C to Type A, no need for new car chargers or adapters at home. Just buy like 2-4 of these if you got many Type C devices.

I agree. Early adopting a connector isn't fun. It's like having a proprietary cable all over again. Google made it worse by using it as an excuse to remove wireless charging and not giving an adapter or cable to connect to 99% of current PCs/phone chargers as well which basically means that $380 phone becomes $390+. Being that the USB C connector in the Nexus 5X is only USB 2.0 it would have made much more sense to include a USB C to A cable instead and used qualcomm quick charging..

I agree that it sucks Google remove wireless charging, but they did it because the technology is not available for metal cased phones. However multiple devices including cell phones will use USB C starting next year. It's not an option, a bill/law was passed in Europe stating no new cell phones will be allowed to be sold in Europe unless that used the approved standard plug which is USB C. If I remember correctly, the law applies to more than cell devices. I for one thing the law makes since and it's necessary, it's forces companies to stop trying to make more profit by creating proprietary cables which are no longer used 3 years later.

Personally, I'm fine with companies using plastic for phone bodies. I don't know why everyone goes crazy over a metal/glass bodied phone. Plastic is probably the best for durability over time. Metal, while durable, gets dented really easily, and shows scratches wear much more than other materials. Glass front and back is much more prone to cracking, and once glass is cracked, it would bug me to no end, and I would have to replace it. Plastic, while it will scratch, and get pitted from drops/scratches/etc, doesn't block RF. It's lightweight, and is more forgiving of the screen, compared to other materials.
And with plastic, you can use your wireless charging with no issues.
I have a feeling we will see metal bodied phones with a cut-out, and a plastic cover where the wireless charging coil is placed in future.

If i recall well, in 2014 the European union decided that all phone should use USB standard starting from 2017. This indeed includes Apple which will either have to do a US version with it's lightening and EU version with USB or use USB on all their devices. Lightning to usb do not seem like a viable option in the EU.
Additionally they stated to use USB and dropped thunderbolt on their macbook so i guess they will do the same on iphones, maybe for the 7. I bet they want to reimburse their lightning investment and avoid losing face ; switching to USB too soon would be seen as acknowledging than USB is better than their technology.
PS: Are you French? You write like french guys...
Good riddance. Micro USB is fragile and an overall crap connector. Bring on USB C. It's about time we got a better standard if you ask me.
