Hi Everyone,
I just laid my hands on the new Galaxy S. I was thinking before porting all my data into it, I will be upgrading it to the Froyo then transfer all the data. I read through the forums/guides, i found there are two ways of doing it. One is Odin and the other is Kies. Since this is my first step into the Android world, i would like to know which one is better and the preferred method of upgrading the phone's OS.
I have same ques. too.. And which is best rom for my sgs..

Depends on what you want to do with your phone and what risks you are prepared to take. There is always a risk flashing your phone will 'brick' it i.e. make it unusable. If you flashed via Kies as this is official Samsung you're covered for a replacement phone by the warranty.
Odin is an unofficial program supporting unofficial upgrades, i.e. brick you're phone with this and if you don't know what you're doing you're stuffed. People at Xda are helpful but it can mean the death of you're phone.
Advantages - you choose the ROM / software you want. No bloat-ware from carrier. Generally cooked ROM's have sorted the 'lag' problem which slows most versions of the Galaxy S (even on Froyo 2.2). They are generally upgraded faster too but don't seem as common for Galaxy S as for HTC phones (someone please feel free to contradict me). ROM Manager app from the market should be able to download Cyanogen mod (supposed to one of the best) when it's finished for the Galaxy S.
I couldn't get Odin to work on Win7 64bit so I went for the official 2.2 update via Kies then used a 'lagfix' downloaded via the market (which also invalidates your warranty...). RyanZA (OCLF on market) worked for me really well on Android 2.1 but haven't tried version 2 with Froyo 2.2. I used a Voodoo oneclick lagfix but there's something going on between the developers and it was removed from the market. You may still be able to get the apk app file to install from SD card if you Google it but I can't find it. I used this and it worked really well.
Anyway, if you know this already my apologies. There's lots of other's here who know much more than I do but thought I'd share my limited experience so far.
I am guessing that the the Kies (I haven't installed it yet), needs a steady internet connection.
The Odin wont need it, since i am already downloading all the data to my PC.
If this is correct... i think i should try out the Odin, as my internet connection is too unreliable and gets disconnected every so often.
Also,
1. How would the Samsung people know that I have used Odin or Kies?
2. If I have installed Lagfix and i uninstall lagfix before taking it to Customer Service would they be able to find out?
Pretty newbie questions, but i hope you will clarify!

First Kies completes the download before flashing your phone the same as Odin and your phone stores a record of the latest ROM / Kernal installed on it. It's under 'Settings' - 'About Phone'... See Firmware, Baseband and Kernal and Build Number.
Some lagfixes do have uninstalls so should be OK if uninstall works.
Ok. I'll go for Froyo with Kies. When Gingerbread becomes official then i'll take on Odin.
I'll have to look into lagfix. I have no clue which one's come with uninstall and which one's don't!
Personally I prefer Odin over Kies. Kies has bricked my phone twice and I have had issues getting Kies to recognise my phone. Before you decide to upgrade with either method make sure your 3 button combo works, if not then you really need to get this working as its your saving grace should something go wrong during or after a flash!

What is that???
3 button combo puts your phone into download and/or recovery mode. Vol up/ down Home key followed by power button [holding all 3 at once] Vol up for recovery mode. Vol down for download mode. If this doesn't work then forget flashing until you get it working.
imho Heimdall is the way to go. I wouldn't even install Kies.

I only knew of two. Now in comes Hiemdall? This is confusing. Now I am from India. I have to check what my Operator is giving me! I may have to do Odin out of force rather than choice.
You may also need to ' root' your phone too before you can apply any of these changes as otherwise the phone is locked down. Look for an app called z4root on xda. It opens up your phone to these other apps (there are other ways of rooting but they can be quite involved for someone new to Android).
If you want to use Odin or Heimdal, & dont want to install Kies, check my signature for Samsung Drivers.
Install them & connect your phone to PC via USB & check if its recognized.
A forewarning & a suggestion.
Kies is known to F**k up phones into unusable state. & so is Odin. Heimdal is pretty geeky for most people.
If you endup with a bricked phone, you can always act stupid & convince the service centre guys that Kies was the culprit. I have Bricked 2 of my friend's phones & have gotten them a brand new replacement from Samsung.

Before you attempt anything switch off your phone completely, hold Vol up + Menu + Power buttons in that order. when the phone shows the samsung splash screen, release the power button for a second while still holding the other two. Again press it back & hold all three till it lands you in the recovery mode.
If your phone can do this, you can take any risk.

Ok fellas! Its game on now... First let me read through everything. I think I have to read through Hidemall now as well. I like geeky stuff. Its just that this is something completely new for me! About the other people you mentioned, I don't know them! Since at least we are formally acquainted... I would PM you!!
So first of all my tablet is brand new and not rooted and I don't want to root it.
When I got it I could update it instantly from 3.0.whateverwastheversionatthetime to android 3.2 (build 7.006.01_COM_GEN1) but it won't go from there to 3.2.1 which I hear is available for my location (France) The update tool tells me that my firmware is up to date.
I've tried a factory reset as advised by Acer customer care services but it wouldn't change. Also no matter what I do (empty cache etc.) the market won't update to Google Play Store and I think the two issues are related.
So I have two (or rather 3) questions:
1) Does anyone know a way around to force the update? (I doubt it's possible but hey "l'espoir fait vivre")
2) If not can I install a stock ROM without root and NOT compromise the warranty?
3) Where can I get such a ROM? I have searched here and here but 3.2.1 is not on the first thread and the links on the second thread are broken, plus I want to make sure that the ROM is the proper one for my region and that comes the ICS OTA update I will have no troubles doing the update.

1) No you cannot force an OTA
2) It depends - others have reported returning there acer with no probs -, i think someone has even returned it rooted and been ok. These things are fairly bulletproof, and really hard to 'brick'. As long as you can read, follow a few steps you shouldnt have any probs. The worse thing you can do is try 2 or 3 different methods all at once because something isnt working right. You're best to pick one and stick with it, if you have probs ask for help in the thread you got the rom from or start your own like you have here
3) The update.zip method from the first link you posted "should" work. Did you "decrypt" the file you downloaded before extracting the update.zip??
You could try timmyDeans v4 method- it will install a stock 3.2.1, it is rooted but you can remove root using the tools he provides. Beware though this will wipe all data so backup anything essential.
The update.zip method will leave your data and settings intact
As always the choice is yours, there are some really excellent custom roms out there - I enjoy the best of both worlds with a backup of my trusty stock 3.2.1, I flash to my hearts content knowing I can always go back to it when the OTA update is out!!! Oh the joys of root priveleges

1) If I install a custom rom, will the OTA work from this ROM or, comes the OTA, will I have to restore my actual Stock rom and then proceed with the OTA?

I've seen such roms around here on xda for 3.2 but none for 3.2.1, if anyone stumbles upon one please let me know.

1. Typically, most people do not take OTA's when running a custom rom, as basically the OTA installs a totally fresh factory Rom. This is true with the 3.2.1 update, which contains a new bootloader. Usually, this means you lose root, and Recovery, then stuck with downgrading to get these things back.
Timmy Deans root tool supposedly maintains a back door method, which s supposed to protect root, in case of an OTA. No, I haven't used this method, as I run my own 501 roms.
2. Vache has a thread "full package and updates" in the 500 Dev forum. There are several factory Roms and Updates. You'll have to look. Chances are, he may not have the specific Com Gen version you want, but probably one close enough.
3. If your friend can get adb running, you can pull a "system dump", which will dump all files/folders in the system folder. The boot.img would be nice to get, but you can probably use the current one you have. Unfortunately, he already rebooted, so you probably can't get the original full update file. If he's rooted, you can use an app called Rom Factory, to get most of what you need. It's always a good time to become familiar with ADB.
4. Well, you can back it up internally, but it's sort of useless if you can't get into your OS You will need to Root, and install a custom recovery to keep your backup externally.

ok, as Moscow has pointed out, in vaches thread not all roms are listed. My stock roms (1.016.01 and 1.139.04) for instance weren't - so I spent the last hour or two trying the "EUU gen1" listed at the bottom of the page. Well, it actually worked!! It gave me an OTA to 1.139.04 straight away. After that installed i got the 4.010.40 to 3.2 and then the next 2 for 3.2.1 - 7.006.03 and 7.014.15. So its given me the correct updates for my country AND kept my data and settings too.
SO, since you're on a Gen1 Rom this should work for you too, but still no gaurantee you will get the OTA to 3.2.1, no harm in trying though
btw timmydeans method is a gen2 rom so you can rule that out...

==> @dibb_nz your method is the closest to what I'm looking for, I also hope it will give me the correct updates for my country and since Vache is a fellow countryman it might just be ok.
Anyways thanks again, I'll give a thorough look to all of your solutions and try and do a few things tomorrow afternoon. I'll keep you posted in case this thread interests anyone else.

No, what I meant to say, is when you run a rooted "custom" Rom, and use a "custom" recovery such as RA Recovery or CWM, getting an OTA update, usually wipes that out, and installs the factory bootloader. Your factory recovery....cough cough.... will still be there.
If you are only concerned about stock factory, then don't worry about it. You;re ok. Your factory/stock recovery will be just fine
The reason we root and install custom recoveries, is so we can do 3 primary things.
1. Flash a custom rom
2. Create a complete system backup to our external SD card.
3. Get rid of pre-installed useless apps.
There are other things we can do with it, but these are the primary reasons.
When you have a default factory stock system, the only protection you have, is a factory reset (hope it works), and a couple other methods which require a touch more knowledge.
Anyhow, don't worry about your factory recovery. It's just fine.

1. The Gen's usually signify regional based roms. More specifically language support, sometimes a wifi tweak, and maybe a couple other things. Mostly though, ComGen1's are for the US and probably canada, and offer about 12 different languages. TMPL is for East Europe mostly, with polish as the default language. All roms contain the english language as far as I know.
3. You basically can't install a full rom on an unrooted tablet without CWM or RA Recovery. You will have to run the update (decrypt the file, remove the update.zip)
4. EUU is a pc based install. Plug in the USB, set your tab to APX mode and run the EUU.
If you did the root, and install a custom recovery, then you could run just about all the full roms. Your custom recovery would be overwritten, and you would lose root access. You would have a stock tablet with the version rom you selected.
You can always wait a week or so. Am sure if the update has been pushed to your country, it's just a matter of time till you get it. It's common for the update process for specific roms, to get fully done in 2-3 weeks. It took well over a week just for users in california to mostly start getting updates.
Well the official release date for the ICS FOTA in France is May 3rd, so I'll wait until then but having other options and the know-how to take actions is always a good basis. (plus I'm really not the patient type ^^)

I tried the EUU just to see if it would keep me on my regions OTA upgrade path.
Sometimes you can have probs OTA'ing if you aren't using the rom from your region.
But in this case it gave me the correct OTA's.
APX is Acer Download mode, where the OTA upgrades are flashed - this EUU will do it via your PC. Button push method (power/reset button) not required.
No, the EUU does not need root which is why I tried it out for you
You will need to be on 3.2.1 before you will receive the ICS update
I used this EUU from vaches thread -
EUUs_SBK_Acer_A500_1.016.05_COM_GEN1

Ok so I did the EUU install and it worked fine, the tablet then allowed me to upgrade to 3.01 and then 3.1 then 3.2 via FOTA without any problem. But once I reached 3.2, the update tool informs me that there's no update available and my gear is up to date
So my guess is Acer France are not pushing the 3.2.1 FOTA update anymore...
Any other explanation?

Glad to hear u got thru the EUU process OK, not so great u still can't ota to 3.2.1
Others have reported similar issues not sure if/how they were ever resolved. As moscow posted earlier,ota,s are not made available to all users in all regions, all at once, so it may be just a matter of waiting for the next "push cycle" to roll round.
At least you know you can always get back to stock if you ever decide to root and go custom There no direct root method for 3.2, just use that same euu to get back to 3.1 and use iconia root and Acer recovery installer from the market and you're ready to flash your rom of choice

Yeah I was just browsing the XDA forums, contemplating the idea to rollback and root and then installing this
I wonder if it's worth waiting for the OTA... as for what you said about waiting for the next "push cycle" I've been waiting since I got the tablet and the update hasn't come yet, which is strange because the ICS update is due on May 3rd in France and I'd guess they'd have everyone up to date and ready for the update by now!
Rooting seems pretty straightforward and much easier than what it was on my Samsung Galaxy Spica: I found this
, a file called iconiaroot.apk on the sdcard aswell, rebooting your tablet while pushing the volume down button so its starts flashing the buggy honeycomb version.
Then start up the tablet again, rush to the market, download some file manager, with that filemanager explore your sdcard, and install the iconiaroot.apk file, once thats done, rush back to the market and download and install acer recovery installer. At that point you will have CWM (clockworkmod) installed.

alsoe FYI and just for the anecdote: the reason I'm so cautious about everything and scared ****less of rooting is that the tablet is a present from my girlfriend for my 30th birthday, and she'll hang me with my guts if I brick it.
Ok I rooted and flashed the above-mentioned rom and it works! I'm now under 3.2.1!

Lol, good onya for taking the plunge! Yeh acer recovery installer is brilliant, along with iconia root, makes the whole process stress free.
Will be interesting to see if you get a notification for ICS OTA with that rom.

okay so the ota has been rolling for over a week and a half now and still nothing for me
I am beyond frustrated... just as title says... I consider myself to be smart with computers but this damn computer will not recognize this tablet... could it have to do w/ the rom i have installed? I have downloaded the drivers from acer directly 3 times and uninstalled/installed SEVERAL times... rebooted the cpu several times...
seems as if no matter what i do i cant get it to be seen by the computer... any ideas?

Not an issue with the rom. Shouldn't be anyhow. I might suspect the following;
1. Your USB cable?
2. When you installed drivers, "right" mouse click and select "run as administrator".
3. If your Acer drivers still won't install, Through Device Manager Install them manually. Don't let it search the PC.
4. If that doesn't work, get the Google USB Drivers from here;
http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
Extract to your PC. Again, install manually from Device manager (if you get a compatibility warning, ignore it)
thank you for the response.. i got so frustrated that i just installed the stock un rooted full package from the dev section of 3.1.. then updated to 3.2 and 3.2.1 and then for some reason my tablet wouldnt update after that... just kept telling me my system was up to date.. BS!!! i just downloaded the update from the same thread and decrypted and then manually installed... still confused as to why my tablet was telling me i was up to take when i was only on 3.2.1... anyway.. ill look into rooting stock ics tomorrow.. thanks again... oh and btw my computer recognized the tablet after i was no longer rooted and running stock.

Stranger things have happened. Believe me Technically, a rom "can" be guilty of USB issues, but the ICS releases out right now don't have these issues. Usually you find these on initial Beta releases.
You have to be a little careful when going back to stock. Acer put a stop to the ICS updates for awhile after they found the update process was bricking tablets. And, not all regions got updates before they stopped the program after a couple of days.
I would guess it tells you you;re up to date, as there is no ICS for it yet till they resume the program. Just a guess.
As far as I know, for the 500, they were supposed to resume ICS updates on the 27th May. Last I heard anyhow.

Actually, I have less issues on windows7. Yeah, you sometimes have to use "run as administrator". So I am not sure what your point is. Technically.
@MD i didnt know they stopped the release ? Win 7 doesnt cause these issues , sorry , for those of you wanting to do more with your android stick with Win 7 , its alot easier than running it through Linux! I use both!
I've been dealing with SOD (Sleep Of Death) problem since official OTA ICS update. On HC everything (except calendar) was fine, but after official ICS update I was having SOD almost every sleep longer then few minutes.
Tried WiFi/sync tricks etc.
What helped ? Well..
1. hardware reset (Vol+ / Pwr / RotateLock)
2. factory reset (from Settings Menu)
3. full update via sd card (Vol- / Pwr)
OFFICIAL ROM: 7.014.16 - 041.213.01 - COM_GEN1 (ICS)

yes, but you can use titanium backup or similar app to do it for you...
I have a A501 and want to get rid of this sod problem. so i took the last "Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3 (LEAK)" Rom from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1816560 and tried to install the update.zip file from the sd card. When i get to the recovery it starts but crashes after a few seconds. Do i habe to install a different recovery or unlock my bootloader? I'm a little bit confused...can somebody give me a short hint? Thx.

This is probably because of a couple of reasons.
1. You didn't do the incremental update. The available update files are incremental patch files, which means you have to have the others installed before you install the latest. Or at least part 1 and 2 of the original leak.
2. You didn't decrypt the file and remove the "update.zip". Generally, you can't just rename these update files to "update.zip". So the latest OTA you took, you should decrypt it "if it needs it", open in 7zip or Winzip and pull the update.zip file and copy that to your EXT SD card.
The final Official release build, was build .021. So if you still get SOD on .021, then chances are you have one of the later revision tablets, and may have to wait a long time until Acer releases another update, as the later revisions only account for a very small percentage.
Or, you can install the unlocked bootloader, and try one of the newer kernels we have.

Thanks for your replay. So what i did was to install all available OTA updates. Then i downloaded the full package Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3 (LEAK) from the site above, extracted the update.zip from this archive and put it on the external sd card. i think that is all i have to do. And my current build number is Acer_AV041_A501_1.021.00_EMEA_DE...so don't know exactly if "[LEAK]Acer A501 ICS (COM_GEN1). Build number 041.126.01" is the same version.
And i tried to unlock my bootloader but the next funny thing is that i tried that Afterota-Tool, but it stucks at 3/4 "Flashing recovery...".
I don't want to loose my 3G-Feature and i saw that nearly all roms are only for A500. Which kernel and rom would you recommend for me?

You current build is cooked my friend. Unless you want Acer repair.
Most of all OTA ICS Updates are Com Gen 1 now. Not sure what acer had in mind. But I believe it has duetch or danish language.
You have to use a 501 update if you want to use 3g and GPS.
My question, were you successful in booting to your system after installing the updates correctly? That is my primary question. If so, make sure you have USB debugging turned on.
But I need to know exactly what your tablet is in now before going further. Does it boot into the OS after running the updates?

I don't know exactly which updates you are talking about. I installed all the available ota updates and the tablet booted correctly after this. If you mean any other update via sd-card i can only tell you that i was not able to install one of them. what do you mean with "cooked"? sorry for stupid questions

Ok, info for you, I am currently working with kernel dev's to maybe get something better as far as kernels, that may help with your SOD if you still have it.
For right now, let us work on things. This may take a few days.
As with Unlocked Bootloader and CWM recovery.
Here is what you should do.
GET YOUR UID NUMBER and write it down.
1. Make sure your Acer drivers are installed.
2. Using After OTA, only install the Patched Bootloader.

So in Afterota i open the tab advanced and there i can choose "browse for custom bootloader" and i can choose between different binary files. I think "bl_ics_ac_v8.bin" or "bl_ics_pb_v8.bin" should be right. What's the difference, what's the right one?

Well, I did things the old fashioned way.
If I am to guess. the first one is CWM recovery included, and the second is Public Recovery included. I never used this tool
I would choose door number 1
BTW, there are other methods to install these things. But let's see what happens. Personally, I don't use these all in 1 tools. Got too many of them in the forums. But, let's see what happens.
If not successful, we'll use My method. And you will learn something in the process.

Let's get your computer prepared the way it should always be when dealing with the dark side of android.
Your tab is running now, and that's good. You have a .021 build. Ok. But let;s see if we can make it better.
First thing, and I hope you have Windows XP or Windows 7.
Download and install the Android SDK.
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Now, next, is the Oracle Java Platform (JDK)
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html
After you do these 2 things, well, we can move over to the dark side.
Now, after everything is installed, I want you to do something.
Connect your tab with USB debugging on. (Never turn this off)
Open Windows explorer, go to C:\program file (x86)\Android\Android-sdk\platform tools . Open a command window here (SHIFT & Right mouse click)
Then type adb devices in the CMD window. Should show device connected and some numbers.
This tells me the drivers are installed.
If not, You have to install Acer USB drivers from the website.
Then try again.
And that, is as far as I go tonight, too late.
Tomorrow, I will give you a lesson in NVFlash and fastboot.
Rule number 1. Drivers, Drivers, Drivers. This was just to prepare your system.
To save some time, for tomorrow, shut down your tab.
Using a paper clip, or needle or something. Press and hold the pin hole button near the USB port. Hold it. Then, press and hold PWR button. Wait 4 seconds, release PWR only. 1 second later, release the pin hole.
Tab should be black. PWR button white. You may get vibrate.
This is what we call APX mode.
When you connect your tab to your PC, after a few seconds, the PC should recognize this as (Recovery Mode, APX Mode, or Download Mode)
Will need to know what it says. If it says nothing, but gives you an error in Windows device manager, then Houston, we have a problem. And the problem is the drivers. And you need to fix it. You may have to manually select from a list or tell it where the drivers are.
And that is all for tonight Mate. Baby needs bath.

Not that I demand it, but, it's customary to hit the "thanks" button for those that help
Always remember, you have a "fastboot" bootloader, so if something happens, you can boot to the Fastboot, and do things like install boot.img's (kernels), Custom Recoveries, and some other things. That's why you installed Android SDK. Also, you have ADB capability as well.

In addition: Now i am using "ICS Evil Alex Unleashed Ver 2". I switched because gps is not working when using tegraowners rom. Now it seems, that all important features are working! Thanks a lot for your rom!
I have the official A500 ICS, didn't do anything other than the OTA upgrade, and it worked fine until I installed some additional apps, it started to do the SOD. Then I uninstalled the latest apps I added, more likely instagram, and the SOD went away, till now at least. So, if you can't get it to work, maybe a factory reset to clear out all the apps might help, then, add apps slowly to see find out which one actually act bad.

Great tutorial!
I have a500 with ota ICS. Rooted. Locked bootloader. And working fine, but I think it could be better..
I am used to flashing rom and kernel on my android phone, but it looks like it is a bit more difficult on this device..
If I want to try another rom, should I follow your tutorial first? Or what do I do?
Oh, and what rom do you recommend? - I need fast, reliable and everything working.. Nothing fancy is required

I can't seem to figure out how to downgrade back to a stock ROM after installing this:

One message I see is "Recovery is not Seandroid Enforcing". Seems like all fixes suggest reinstalling stock ROM, which I'm trying to do, but can't.

What's your steps to downgrade to 6.0.1? Did you download Rogers ROM and ODIN it(google is your best friend)?

If ODIN starts and stops immediately, you have a different problem. Did you install the Samsung Android USB driver properly. Anyway, you have a software issue, fix it first. I suggest you watch a few related video on youtube.

- reset my system with a backup image (Bare Metal Restore with True Image) I only have some basic software installed.
- downloaded and installed SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_1.5.63.0
Is your phone booting up and functioning? If it is, why are you talking about debrick? I'm assuming that you're "new" to all this. I suggest you read up(especially the stickies) and be comfortable before you go further.

No, it doesn't boot up at all now.
I know I initially said "I" installed the custom ROM, I didn't, I bought it that way. The previous owner won't do anything to help. The only thing he did was provide a link to the ROM he had installed, nothing more, not even the tutorial related to it, I found that on my own (wait, he's made it more than clear how incompetent/ignorant I am as a person).
I've been searching and reading for 3 days straight now. Getting to the point again where I accept defeat, assume the money lost.
Moving on... I've rooted other phones before without issues.
I follow a tutorial on how to downgrade to a stock ROM.

Odin stops with various errors.
I could still boot device into TWRP-3.1.0
Reflashed LineageOS 14.1 ROM from SD to get it working again.
LineageOS 14.1 ROM would boot up, run for almost a minute and a half and shut down.
Pull battery, reboot into LineageOS 14.1 ROM, same thing.
Run Odin, connect device to computer, try to flash stock ROM, error again (different one). Somehow, it says "There is no PIT partition"

Yes, the whole freezer thing overnight.
I have the latest USB drivers installed.
When I connected to the PC, an error popped up saying "...drivers not installed properly..." so I let Windows Update install the correct drivers.
I can connect to the PC now, press the power button for more than 10 seconds, eventually a popup message says "USB Device Not Recognized by Windows"
I've tried the following stock ROMs, 4.4.4, 5.1.1. I finally managed to download 6.0.1, but haven't been able to try it.
All I can say is that if you can boot into TWRP(I assumed you install the N910T version), then your phone is not bricked. All these "debricking" you're doing is potentially harming than fixing.
You assume the risk, when you buy 2nd hand. But based on what you're saying, it sounds like it may also have hardware issues(I don't think software will fix). Was it working when you got it? If you can return it, I suggest you do.

QualcommDrv
this is the Qualcomm Drivers(x86 and x64, choose your system's version and install) .
Without that your pc will not recognize your phone.
Uninstall everything related to samsung from your pc.
Kies, smart link, usb drivers. Use revo-unistaller for this to be sure nothing have left behind.
Go to control panel>system>device manager and remove anything that is related to your phone . If prompt delete drivers associated with that, say yes. Reboot your pc
Have saved QualcommDrv, samsung usb drivers and Odin. These are the tools you are going to need and must have.
after uninstall everything, unzip and install QualcommDrv.
Take off your battery, press power buton for 10 sec . Connect the phone to pc (without battery)
QualcommDrv will install the correct drivers for your phone. After that If in devices and printers it is recognized as Qualcomm 8084 .... its ok to proceed . if not , check again drivers and their installation
If windows says device drivers are not correctly installed and prompt to download and install, stop and cancel it.
IT will replace the QualcommDrv and you will not be able to see your phone correctly.
You need to keep QualcommDrv installed. When this is done and you are sure its correct and working, unplug your phone and install Samsung usb drivers. Reboot pc
unzip odin in desktop (or where ever its easy to access).
with your phone freezed and battery charged try to go to download mode. If succeed, connect to pc and with odin try to flash stock rom. If not ......

That what you need to have correct and working in order to START. THIS IS ONLY THE FIRST STEP

this is a hardware failure of the motherboard and will never will be completely fixed. These steps will only help you resurrect your phone and maybe give you the chance to be able to use it again.
It has nothing to do with software that failed to install. It was just the result and not the real problem, which is a diffect motherboard like thousand others. Sadly this is a common problem with Note 4 that happened to many users.
I have the same problem and I also bought it second hand knowing its problematic but not how much.
After that I realized the problem and the solutions to it. Every one of us is having a slightly different behavior of the phone.
I, for example cannt use the phone without the ext sdcard with unbrick image in it. When I take it out phone, will not start, reboot , do nothing.With the card in it its working almost perfect.
So have patience and read and search to know what you are dealing with.

I don't believe you truly downgraded. I'm assuming you were on a 6.0.1 bootloader running a compiled 7.1.1 ROM. It probably hosed some partitions, and other things. Flashing the Stock ROM normalized it.
Most of time flashing a stock touchwiz rom will fix the "damage" that results in flashing a CM ROM.

I have no idea what kernel, bootloader, etc. were/are used in the LineageOS ROM.
What I'd like to do is take a stock ROM and remove the unnecessary BLOATWARE and keep all the rest as it is.
Personal blurb: Why can't OS makers simply do that, make an OS!!! Windows, Android, it really doesn't matter, they're all the same.

There is nothing stopping you from doing that but you.
Don't waste your breath saying I don't know how. There are TONS of guides on XDA.

"I don't know how" generally isn't in my vocabulary. It's more like, where do I start, what do I need, where's a good tutorial explaining the what, how, and why of doing things.
Do I need to go all the way into the Java source code or are there other ways of removing some of the built-in apps?
Any tutorial/info suggestions are more than welcome. I'm not that familiar with the lingo of ROM customizing, so my searches are pretty much limited to that; "Android ROM customizing" is about the jist of it right now.

There are essentially two ways to do what you want.
Use the unpack tool above, extract the system.img from a Stock ROM

I get my stock ROMs from here

Remove the bloatware or apps you don't want.
Use the app same app that you used to extract the system.img to repack it.

to build a tar and flash with ODIN.
Second option use a kitchen. I'm testing the one below today to see if it works.

SuperR works great. But you need a Linux environment to run it.
I use virtualbox on my Win10 machine. I use premade images from here

Personally I use the Ultimate Edition.
Or use cygwin. I gave you plenty of links to learn how that works. It's a pain that's why I use virtualbox.
