Ok, this is my first Droid phone, so I'm still trying to figure it all out.
My default text message app is driving me crazy. It randomly decides to scroll up and down when it feels like it.
So, I've installed ChompSPS to use as my messaging app. No more random scrolling, so I'm happy.
The problem is, I can't figure out how to disable the default service notification.
I've been through settings -> sounds -> notifications but all I can find is a setting to change my ringtone for everything, and I can't find a general page for notifications.
So, how do I disable the default text message notifications?
i have some friends that used Handcent SMS on different phones and ran into the duplicate notification problem as well. i guess this post doesn't help much since i have no solution to offer, but just so you know, you're not the only one who's had trouble with this.

Go into the stock messaging app settings and turn off notifications there.
Thanks

The solution is often simple, isn't it?
Thanks.
Also, fyi: this is an android phone. Not a Droid phone. Droid is a line of phones in the same since that Galaxy S is a line of phones. Android is the operating system that runs all these phones.
And the other user is correct. Change setting in the OEM messaging app to keep from having duplicate notifications.

I see many people use chompsms and handcent application on their Hero. Why? I have downloaded the chompsms to try it out, but I had to check both applications to remove the "new message" notification in the status bar.
What is the advantage of applications like chompsms?
I can't say anything about ChompSMS or Handcent, because I don't use SMS enough to worry about using something "better" than the default app.
However, your first point was that you had to clear two notifications - in the settings for the standard SMS app, you can switch off notifications so presumably this is what you should do if you want to use another app for SMS.

Dave
It used to be on the CDMA Hero, that the default messaging app was buggy and drained our batteries severely. Anymore, it's a preference thing. Some of them have more features, a different look, etc.
For me, handcent has the advantage of a nice popup option built in and the ability to automatically resize pictures for MMS.
I use handcent sms because of the many settings-options you have and because of the blacklist function!
Standard app was just too.. standard
just installed Handscent sms, it looks identical to iPhone sms, lol.
SMS Popup is the best one I've tried.
I found the Handcent UI options weren't as sleek as the default app.
Was running handcent but when in landscape mode it crashes so switched to chompsms no more issues
i know i was reading it somewhere, but when installing a 2nd sms application like handscent or chomp, dual notifications occur.. is there way to remove that?
Go to defualt messages app. hit menu turn off notifcations.

Tried that and it doesn't work. I get both the Handcent and the envelope icon. It is getting annoying.
I am running the Dell stock 1.6 software.
1.Is there a way to set different sound options for different notifications. Example, I would prefer to only get an audible notification for SMS messages but none for emails. I don't see that option. If there is not, is there a program that will do this?
2. As part of this issue, I now get little beeps or bells going off and by looking at the notifications can not determine what caused the sound. I don't even see any changes in emails or my Facebook widget. Maybe tweets?
3. My notifications are suddenly screwed up. It keeps telling me I have x number of emails to read. I click on it, read them or even "mark folder as read" and then it still tells me I have the same number of emails to read. this didn't used to happen. It started recently.
Thanks

1. You can configure the notification in each app. Start gmail and go to settings etc....
2. It may be sd card notifications which you can turn off in the main settings app.
3 try forcing a sync.
4. Upgrade to 2.1 or froyo. ;-)

Go into the stock messaging app and in settings uncheck Notifications.
Also uncheck auto retrieve in the stock messaging app
Also if you for some reason have a different app set to default, you can go into settings - applications and then Handcent to "Clear Defaults" so next time you try and message from something like contacts, it will bring up a selection window of the app to use then just check "make default" and pick Handcent.
well that was simple enough geez. THANKS GUYS
There is a better way. If you try to send a text from the contact lists, then if has a separate default entry for each contact, so you will still be asked on occasion if you want to send from handcent or messaging. If you never plan on using messaging (which I see no point in doing so) then you can just remove it or freeze it with Titanium. Then you never have to think about it again.

Ok, I know it should be easy.. but how the hell do i turn off the vibrate function with the stock message app? tried going through the menu and no option there...
it's driving me a bit potty... any help?
Do you mean the vibration you get when writing a message or when you recieve a message?
I can't give you a direct answer as I don't have the phone yet, however if there isn't a setting that enables you to remove the vibration, I used an application on the marketplace called Streak Vibrations (requires root) that globally disables and enables vibration on the phone. Worked wonders on my old Atrix.

when receiving a message
I believe that you just have to disable the vibration for notifications to disable it for the message app. Running stock I do not believe that you can pick and choose what notifications get to vibrate. More of an all or nothing type deal.
Now if you root thats a different story, not to mention once some custom roms start rolling out
Settings > Sound > under general, select Vibration then select never. Vibration alerts will still work for Gmail notifications if you have it set that way in the Gmail app.
Just picked up the G2 yesterday and I love it for the most part. Hoping some of you can help me on one thing.
I generally keep my phone on vibrate mode and want notifications for text messages, calendar reminders, etc... but not when I receive a new email. I've checked my Gmail settings, and vibration is turned off there. However, my phone still vibrates for every email.
I've gone through every general setting I can, but I can't seem to figure out how to turn this off. Anyone have an answer?
it's not under the general settings, its under the account settings.

Gmail account settings? If so i already have those settings set correctly. If not which settings are you referring to?
Anybody else? I'd really like to solve this issue.

I went to accounts under settings and removed my gmail from the Email accounts. There is no reason to have gmail there when you can just use the gmail app... kinda annoying. Then you can just have gmail give you notifications when you get a gmail.. like it should be?
I know this thread is a bit old, but I still can't figure out how to stop Gmail from vibrating every time I get an email. Has anyone figured this quirk out?

If you are using the Gmail App then go to the gmail app settings > click your email> then "Inbox sound & vibrate" > uncheck vibrate
That's just it though, it still vibrates even when vibrate is not checked.

Anyone figure this out? I keep my phone on vibrate also and gmail vibrates every time even though it's unchecked.
Did you ever figure this out? I am also being affected by this problem.
Hi guys, yes I managed to make the incredible annoying vibrating to stop each time I get a new e-mail or message (sms).
Go to the Message-app - in the right corner (on the phone) press Menue - Settings - Turn off "Vibrate".
Now you should get no vibrations at all when receiving sms/mms or email (I have a Sony Xperia P).
this worked for me

Open gmail icon then in menu mode, look for settings under label settings. Not sure why it's there but it is. Open label settings and choose the device notifications
Sound, and under sound choices choose Silent. It's at the top of my lg choices. I can't think why they combined text and email. Who in their right mind want a d
ing every time an email comes in!??
