I SAW ON DROIDLIFE THAT SOMEONE HAS MADE PROGRESS IN DOING IT AND THAT THEY MAY NEED HELP FROM THE COMMUNITY. JUST WANTED TO POST THIS SO THE BIG DOGS CAN MAYBE LOOK INTO IT. FOLLOW ON TWITTER @aliasxerog

Very very nice. Hope these guys can pull it off. Why hasn't anyone tried this before?

He's been at it for a while
It seems that substantial progress has been made in that he has been able to run programs through a new kernel, just not the ones that involve the cell radio or wifi...is that the consensus?
Let me clear this up. There is something called kexec which tricks your phone into thinking the stock kernel is there even though you put a new kernel into place in the simplest terms. It isn't an unlock. I doubt there will be an unlock for a long while. If birdman wasn't able to do it then I'm not sure others can. Birdman is wicked smart.

Droid x kexec kernel module is out
I guess aliaszerog has released the module that he's been working on but it needs a lot of work

So is this basically a kernel module? Which from my understanding is already in place or is actually replacing the kernel?

Yes, its essentially a layer for a second kernel to be passed. It does not replace the in place kernel, just allows ignores the first, and boots another...
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Haven't read up on kexec's exact working process... but having been following aliasxerog.
Major props to the man for sticking with this!
It sounds like it would do the same thing as if the original kernel was to "replaced"
if its ignored, and another one used, should be same thing essentially right?

Not really. Its good for some things, but we still do not have a permanent recovery which is ideal to ROM developers in case something goes wrong so you do no need to flash an sbf and then root all over again. But don't take the kernel thing the wrong way, because that is major progress and could lead the path to other things. Probably not, because this is just a new kernel module so you can boot one kernel on top of another without replacing the stock one.
I guess I'll be the optimist; Atleast we've gotten SOMEWHERE.
the DX has had a bootable kexec for a while. no one has been able to make the radio work though

Hey guys-
I was wondering if anybody would be willing to create an easy to install froyo rom for the vibrant that could be installed through rom manager? If it's possible and someone would be willing to take on the challenge I and many other noobs out there would be much ablidged. Thanks in advance.

CM 6 is coming. For now enjoy the great job done so far
if you take a look at other threads under this forum, there has been work at porting 2.2 to this phone. Some difficulties in getting a fully functional build. I would recommend using the search function before starting a new thread, especially when posting under development, as you'll prolly get flamed pretty heavily.

I'm totally aware there's a 2.2 rom out for the vibrant already but what I'm asking for is a much easier to install version of froyo.

It does exist. It was the international Froyo leak but it is not a complete Froyo since it is missing JIT as well as other things. That leaked ROM is incomplete and is not stable for everyday use. Especially on a Vibrant, there are a lot of bugs with it and it is not recommended to be using it as the daily ROM.
It's better off waiting for 2.2 to release by Samsung or the CM team. It's just around the corner. Be patient.

They're working on it, once Eugene has it fixed, he's going to make a flashable .zip file for easy installing. He posted this in his 2.2 thread.

Exactly - there is no Froyo rom that is much easier to install than the leaked int'l one, let alone a stable one. What he's asking for doesn't exist. There's no secret, stable, froyo.zip floating around that people just aren't talking about.
I havnt seen a single rom on here that ISNT easy to install....
just waiting to see flame city for this one, similar questions have been asked time and time again... plus this isnt Q&A forum.....

Well for anyone that didn't use ODIN as there method of rooting and who doesn't want to spend more time then having to flash a basic .zip file, than there are some harder to install roms.

This forum has become like a kindle box just one spark turns us all in to flames. Calm down guys and remember you have something other than your E(letronic)ego to work about. Im sure you have cut infront of a car before not trying to be rude just let this pass and answer the damn question.
So far theres not an easy way to get a fully functional 2.2 however as with anything give it time and we will see it some time.
i do believe that everyone on here wants that including all the developers working on it. if we were happy with 2.1 then we would have stuck with the original os that samsung put out for the vibrant. really did you have to ask this here? or at all? its technology its always growing. give it time!

I know this is another GalaxyS device, but it seems that there really isnt any interest for it in the community. Does the ticker screen cause enough compatibility issues that we most likely wont see Cyanogen or anything for it? What about support from Samsung, are we likely to fall behind the curve for 2.2 release?
Iv had it for a few days and I love the formfactor, but Im considering swapping it for a fascinate for the modability. Any opinions?
There is currently no support from the developer community, but all it takes is one good dev and we'll be in business. There's really no way of knowing if 2.2 will lag behind, since no US Galaxy S phones have gotten the update yet... Only time will tell on both I'm afraid.
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA App
Samsung has began releasing the 2.2 update in certain countries from what I've read. So it should only be a matter of time before the USA gets it. The update will come via Kies I believe (Samsung's update software for PC).
As for custom ROMs for the Continuum, I believe development may be slow for this phone due to the ticker display. The ticker makes it more difficult to develop for. However, I'm confident we'll get some custom ROMs at some point. I'd be really nice if Samsung skipped 2.2 and went straight to 2.3 but that'll never happen.
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA App
One of the first things we are going to need is a custom recovery to be able to backup/restore the phone. I suspect this will take someone loaning their phone to koush in order to get clockwork recovery and rom manager support. I know I am leery to try anything without having a way to restore, even if I have to restore to default.
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA App
Yeah a stock ROM would be excellent. There will be plenty of people who delete necessary apps with root access even before custom ROMs are available.
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA App
Well we're gonna need a custom recovery first, so that is one of the bigger issues.
Sent Koush a tweet asking what he would need and offered my phone for a period of time. I still have my D1 I can use.

Glad to see the Continuum Forum up and running! I know very little about development and such, but I'm open to testing out things. I'll be following the threads here as much as possible.
I was thrilled with the idea of this phone when it was released, but the limits on the ticker make it nearly unusable (no gmail? and Samsung's e-mail app is horrible).
I was thinking about returning it, but with the new found forum here on XDA, my hope is renewed.

Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
For what it is worth, I can state that this will install using recovery 2.5.0.5, as I just got done doing so.
Yep, i've reverted back as far as ROM manager allows and so far so good with backing up any ROM and flashing any ROM
As far as this Honeycomb port goes, I wish I had this on my Gtab. Obviously needs some work, but wow this is a 10 on the cool factor. Who cares who did it or not, these Dev's deserve mad respect for their time and hard work. I actually approached the dev for a port on the Gtab and he says he's been trying, but still no luck. As an owner and avid Gtab forumster, I can say that many people on the Gtab forums would consider this guy a god if he were successful on porting this over.
Everybody chill out about the drama and give props where it's due. This is awesome news and fantastic work.
Yes, it is. Is there another recovery I could use?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Yea go into rom manager and at the bottom it has older recoveries use a 2. whatever one.
flashed for a little but forgot to install gapps. pretty useless right now most stuff doesnt work. along with the bad lag its also pretty hard to navigate since its made for a tablet. things are really small and the mouse has to be moved with the toggle which is a pain in the ass among many other things. might go back to it and try gapps just for ****s and gigs. otherwise useless. will be cool when the bionic comes out and a port comes to that.
Just wondering if anyone has tried this or a similar method for multi-booting on the atrix, since bootmanager doesn't work.

This site gives pretty nice instructions on how to make the build yourself
I would make it, but I don't have a large enough hard drive
Right now it's slow and in early alpha, Hardware Acceleration doesn't work as of now.
So until someone can dump the IMG files, this is how it's done.

A friend of mine is right now for the 4G. Let's see how this works..
the result file should be .img files that have to be flashed via fastboot.
So everything will be erased, recoveries, ROM's and your SDCARD/eMMC
Does it wipe SD card?

My friend is currently trying to get a version that we can flash, because normally it just transfers straight from adb. He has to fix permissions and symlinks of the dump. Hopefully if everything goes right we should have a build by tonight
I would really appreciate this, been wanting to try it out, but don't have a PC running linux now.
Interesting. If I get time I might setup Ubuntu in Virtual Box and give it a try.
I'm so trying this when it's fully functional, even if I have to wait a long time.
