Hello XDA,
Just got my T-mobile MT4G (First android) that I finally successfully rooted with the guide from CyanogenMod Wiki so that I could use it in Canada!
I didn't do the engineering hboot nor install the custom recovery image (clockwork)
It's on stock rom with all the bloatware still on it.
I have some questions:
1) What is the purpose of the engineering hboot and do I need it? Is it remove security around the radio portion of the device?
2) Do I need the custom recovery image (clockwork)? Does it provide features like backing up the device/data so I can restore to the phone if anything fugs up.? Is the main feature basically like 'ghosting' your phone in case you flash a rom that won't boot up?
3) Where do I go from here, what advantages are there in getting CM 6.2 over using the stock rom with the HTC Sense UI? and just to start installing tweaks, mods and apps?
4) Any recommendations on 'MUST HAVE' applications on the Android that should be setup right away!
I pretty much want a fairly non-bloated basic working phone but good usability. I use Gmail for home/work so I would want Google Docs, Gmail and Google Apps access...
Thanks everyone,

All the guides I've found thus far that have described how to root your phone and flash to a new ROM have required using a modified ROM. Is it possible to turn a G1 into a Dev Phone 1 without the use of a hacked ROM?
If I understand the guides correctly, you need to flash back to RC29 to gain a root console, then you need to replace your recovery partition with one that will take ROMs signed with different keys, then you need to replace the bootloader, and finally you neeed to flash from a modified ROM.
Would it be possible to instead replace the bootloader, recovery partition, and ROM with their stock Dev Phone counterparts, thus essentially turning my G1 into a stock Dev Phone 1? The Dev Phone 1 has root access enabled, so wouldn't I enjoy all the benefits of the hacked ROMs?
Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, but the guides seem to focus on modified ROMs and a search revealed nothing.
You can downgrade and root, after that install official ADP 1.5 and eSPL but this doesn't really make sense, grab JF's Cupcake ADP 1.5, hSPL and you will have more fun.
The recovery system > original recovery, more options, real backup. So is hSPL > eSPL.
In this thread it says I have to replace the recovery partition with a modified one so that the phone will accept images that have been signed with different keys.
Will the recovery partition already on my phone accept ADP images, allowing me to skip this step and only deal with the SPL and an ADP image?
hSPL only gives you the ability to write non-matching NBH files. With eSPL or hSPL, you won't be using NBH files anyways, so this doesn't matter. Might as well use the stock eSPL. And yes, you can certainly write the ADP1 image once the eSPL is installed, or you can write any of the custom images... I wouldn't use the word "hacked", since those based on the official ADP1 1.5 image really aren't hacked, they're just customized. And of course, once the eSPL is written, you can switch between system images at will without any kind of crazy hacking procedure to do so -- that's what eSPL is made for.
Alright, let's take this a step further...
I am trying to identify the exact set of files that determine ADP1 vs. G1. I flashed the JF ADP1.5 and ADPCP2.0. The later was identifying itself on the phone as T-Mobile G1, despite the file name. I returned to JF, but used the boot from ADPCP2.0 and did manage to get a lot of the speed in it, as it is much faster. I still want the whole file system, though, but I need to be on an ADP version. Before you go on about su and root and stuff... I have it. But programs such as Spotter remain free if you are ADP branded. So the question is what do I need to keep to keep ADP?
Thats easy. The file that identifies to the OS if its a G1 or ADP1 is /system/build.prop. Note that you can customize this file however you wish.
The main *real* difference between the ADP1 and the G1 that gives the ADP1 infinitely more power than the G1 is the bootloader. With the engineering bootloader, you can do anything.
Hi
similar to an other thread here if tried to change my SPL
and never recovered.
I can still get the blue led going using TrackBall + EndCall buttons.
The orange led lights up when I connect the usb cable.
But I cannot see it from the pc in any way (adb/fastboot).
there is some life in it but not a lot, have not seen the screen light
up at all.
Would it be possible to get a new bootloader/spl on it? Perhaps using
some kind of automatic update mechanism that is build in using an
update.zip file on the sd card?
Any help is more than welcome.

hmm, post needs al least 10 chars... should be enough now...
Has everyone also drawn a blank on this?

Try downloading the ruu from your phone's official reseller.
T-Mobile USA standard OS.
Assuming that you backed up using Nandroid or something to SAVE and STORE your originally packaged Android 1.5 (Cupcake) version from T-Mobile...you NEED to restore that properly using a recovery image. Amon_RA has a great one, so does Cyanogen, obviously by now I'm sure you're aware. But keep in mind, to get back to that state...you must be careful not to alter any necessary files on that standard OS.
Do some Google searching and try to track down a Cupcake 1.5 download from one of those sites that leaked it or something. That's your best bet. Right now you don't need to be worried about continuing on from where you are. You need to backtrack and begin anew.
Sorry to hear that. I was thinking of installing Haykuro Apps to SD ROM and it needs to change the SPL. But I think not worth taking a risk.
Can you tell a little bit more which ROM were you planning to install?
Which SPL did you update to?
Which ROM did you have at the time of SPL update?
Which thread or instructions did you follow if any?
Hi
@mrjunix
I have a google ion, and therefore cannot return it unfortunately to the
carrier, as there was none. I went to the Google IO conference but
I am back in Europe and there is not support here.
btw what do you mean by RRU??
@Reignzone
I do have a nandroid backup but I cannot get back into recovery mode,
or fastboot mode or anything... the pc does not recognize it either.
@technicolor
I installed the Cyanogen recovery image and was able to install
one of his rom's. It worked fine but then I wanted to install
a Hero rom and I wanted to update the SPL.
Used the cyanogen recovery to update the spl using an update.zip
file. the phone restarted the "android" update screen came on
briefly and it never came back on...
changing the recovery rom should not be an issue,
and normally I think you do not need to flash your spl at all any more.
you can do a lot with the fastboot mode and one of the recovery roms

This is the same advise you gave me yesterday on my bricked MT3G, but if you can't enter recovery mode, a nandroid backup ain't gonna help much, is it?
Also, any cupcake downloads are not going to help either, if you can't fastboot or enter recovery.
I appreciate you trying to help, but if you pay attention to the OP (and my own post), you'll see that your advise isn't going to solve anything.
For starters:
My advice to have those of you who are in need to take an approach that allows you to backtrack you work. Perhaps you left out various details of your issue or process taken in order to end up where you're at.
Your bitterness isn't appreciated for my having misread the problem.
YOU are the one with the F***** device, not me.
Anyway, all that aside; you might try to read-up on various threads that could be of some help. Google search, HTC support, ADB, etc.
There's always something to be done.
Good luck.

forum puffering aside, RUU is ROM Upgrade Utility
Prepackaged programs that bypass the phone's software altogether to reflash the rom
My carrier is Rogers of Canada and I have their "HTC Magic" phone
Be warned that Rogers is intentionally altering their hboot to disable system changes, you may not be able to cook your os after using this rom update.
Their updates page
https://your.rogers.com/web_auth/techsupport.asp
has the update
http://downloads.rogers.com/wireless/products/htc/magic/RUU_Sapphire_Rogers_WWE_2.17.631.2_release_signed_NoDriver.exe
Hi All,
This forum is a great resource of knowledge and I have spent many an hour reading through the rooting process on the magic, however I just wanted to confirm my understanding before starting - please correct me if I am wrong.
Firstly I watched this video: http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/29/how-to-root-the-htc-magic-in-one-click/
Showing me the process, and using FlashRec program is exploits a bluetooth bug and changes the recovery menu to amons.
At this stage we could reboot the phone and my stock android build will boot, and then re-replace the recovery menu back to default (as it does this every boot).
So we could re-exec the FlashRec to copy on amons recovery menu but this time load a custom rom like cyanogens. This then patches the exploit to stop other programs using it against us.
If we wanted to then go back to stock we could reboot the recovery menu (amons) and use nandroid recover to load up our backed stock rom, which at boot will then reset the recovery back to stock also.
Does this sound correct to everyone? My only question and confusion comes with the SPL. Is this touched at all in the rooting/loading custom rom process (when using the one-click rooting technique)? I have read restoring the SPL back to stock isnt that simple, but this might not even apply to me.
Thanks in advance, oh clever ones
Hello,
I have got a HTC Tattoo (Un-rooted) with The HTC standard rom.
And i wants to ask som Questions to you guys!
1. i got This Error when i tested the 1 click root and what should i do??
2. What i a Recovery imagine like "RA-Tattoo-v1.6.2" and why does i need one??
3. Im a Norwegian and i wants a FroYo ROM with Norwegian language, has "[ROM] SP-FroYo v1.6" that?
4. What can go wrong with the rooting has anyone lost their tattoo??
5. Gold card?? My phone is not operator locked, does i need one then?
6. how to test about the goldcard is working??
7. Is live wallpaper working in 2.2 Rom's For Tattoo?
Thanks! (srry bad english)
1. have you enabled usb debugging on your device? Have you installed the Android SDK?
2. You need a recovery to install new roms and make backups of your complete system with all your settings and apps.
3. I think you can install morelocale on that rom. So yes it should be possible. But you should know that not everything is working on 2.2 and 2.1 roms. The most important thing is the camera that is not yet functioning. But there are many custom 1.6 roms where anything is working and which have some advantages compared to stock.
4. I don't think there is much that could go wrong with this rooting script if follow the introductions. Later when you flash new roms you should always make a Nandroid-Backup in your recovery. You never know if there are problems with the new rom. You go to recovery by shutting down your phone and then push home and power button till recovery menu appears. Unless you flash a new radio you can't brick your phone.
5. You don't need one.
7. I think it is but I never tried out by myself.

Yes there is a recovery in it. You mean Simlocked or what kind of locked. If yes put a Simcard of an other provider in your phone and you will see it. If you didn't buy at a provider's shop it's probably not simlocked.
I know the camera is not that good and not even comparable to your real camera. But there are several apps that use the camera like reality browsers, barcode scanners, google shopper and goggles. But if you think you don't need that and if you don't need HTC Sense the rom you mentioned is surely a good choice. If you want guides go to the unlockr.com
Thanks Man!
Hi all,
I have a couple questions before I install my first ROM on my Telus Hero.
First off, I'm following btdag's guide over here, as I am an admitted complete Newb.
So, what I've got:
HTC Hero on Telus in Canada
Android 2.1-update1
Launcher Pro Plus as my current launcher
Flash Rec
Titanium Backup
HTC Sync installed on Win XP 32 bit
Amon Ra's recovery ROM for hero, 1.7.0.1
Rooted using Universal AndRoot
What I've done so far
As mentioned above, I've rooted the phone
I'm trying to Flash to the recovery image in the root of the sdcard folder, but it keeps failing. Can someone give specific steps as to what I am to do here?
Tried to backup the recovery image - see below.
About to do a Titanium Backup and then a Nandroid backup as specified in the guide.
Questions
1. I've tried to type in /sdcard/recover-RA-hero-v1.7.0.1.img into the address bar and click 'Backup Recover Image', but it just says 'Backup FAILED: Could not run command'. Any ideas?
2. What is the best ROM for this phone, in your opinions? I know I could flash it multiple times, but I'm not super-keen on that idea.. I'd prefer to do a one-shot, done sorta thing.
What I'm looking for in a custom ROM (in order) - preferably 2.3, but 2.2 would be acceptable:
a) speed
b) stability
c) compatibility
d) flashiness (UI stuff, launchers, etc)
e) overclocking built-in
I realize I can install whatever launcher I'd like after the fact, but if it comes baked-in, I'm good with that too. I'd prefer a launcher that has some basic customization for # of homescreens as I find that the hero is sluggish on many more than 5, and I prefer 3, tbh. This may be mitigated by the speed improvements of 2.3 as well as the built-in overclocking that some seem to have. I'm okay if I have to install setcpu separately to overclock.
3. Unlocking? I'm going to be going to Europe in May and I'd like to buy a data SIM card when I get there. Will these ROMs unlock the phone or is that a separate code I have to get from somewhere (ie: Ebay, etc)?
Thanks in advance!! I really appreciate all the work the devs and volunteers have done to make all of this available to the newb users like me.

I'll bite, lol.
Give Cronos Ginger 1.4 a try. It's a 2.3 ROM and my daily driver. http://www.cronosproject.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=780 I find it to be fast and stable.
As for launcher, I use LauncherPro. It is very quick. I have tried ADW Launcher and is okay as well. There are some others to try but I haven't for a long time.
For overclocking, give SetCPU a try. It is free on xda for forum members.
For SIM unlocking, these ROMs will not do that. You'll need to get a code from ebay, etc as you mentioned.
I'll get back to you on the flashrec error.
Edit:
Okay, for the flashrec error it looks like you might be doing it wrong. You are trying to backup your current recovery image to a file name that probably already exists (recover-RA-hero-v1.7.0.1.img is the new image).
I replied to another user a while ago here with some advice that seemed to work: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=812511 Give that a try.
And back to the stable ROM suggestion, I didn't see that you just wanted to "set it and forget it" (install one ROM and that's it). In that case something that is stable is Cronos Froyo (a 2.2 ROM) http://www.cronosproject.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=758.
And since you're a newb, read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797740
Hello,
I am also a Telus customer with their Hero (got it way back in December). Currently rooted and using RaduG's TastyGinger 2.0 (Android 2.3.2) as my daily ROM. Very fast, stable, everything works (Camera, GPS, WiFi, BT, data, etc..)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=943720
Overclocking is built into the ROM and can be adjusted when fully installed through TastyOC and ranges the clock speed between 176MHz - 710MHz. He does say that you should NOT use any other OC utility other than the one built in because he has implemented a custom set of instructions.
Before that I was running VillianROM's FroydVillian 1.7.2 (Android 2.2.1) and was great as a daily. Only issues that I had with that one was the GPS lock would not work sometimes and would have random reboots occasionally.
I promise you, however, that once you flash out of the stock 2.1 from Telus, you will flash atleast 5-9 different ROM's just because you can or you find that the recommended ROM's just don't suit your needs. I reflashed about 10 times because I couldn't decide if I wanted Sense or AOSP, haha.
Have fun.
EDIT: In regards to unlocking, you can either pay Telus $50 for them to unlock it for you now or you can check, like you said, EBay for people who buy unlock codes wholesale. Telus is probably way more expensive, but it would be 100%.
Regards.
Hey, thanks so much for your reply!
After trying to flash the recovery image, I gave up and just bought ROM manager installed and used clockworkmod. That works great.
So first, I tried TastyGinger... oh so slow and laggy. So not for me.
I reflashed with Froyo 2.2.1 stock with the blue sence theme and launcherpro instead of ADW and it seems to be working like a charm now. I'm quite liking it. Are there significant benefits to 2.3 other than the slight UI improvements? All the 2.3 based ROMs seemed like they have a bit too many bugs as yet, and since I do want stable, I figured I'd stick with 2.2.1.
I'll download setcpu and give it a shot.
Thanks again!!
Oliver
