Yes it does sound interesting. I would be disappointed also if this were to be the device. Just not into any type of tablet, "industry first" or whatever. Not to mention I can't stand anything with any type of hinge to it. Just something else to be problematic and break. I want dual cores, not screens.
Nice find Dirty

They could do much worse, much, much worse. If it is what it says, that'd actually be pretty cool.

I would be sick.. then pissed..
If it was done right a 4.x" phone that converts to an 8.x" tab would be cool but I don't see "them"coming up with a good enough solution for coupling them to work as one big screen. If it feels like using a Nintendo DS then I won't be parting with an upgrade for it.

omg, dual screen tablet! hell yeah!
you might not think it would be cool at first but think of the possibilities!
run an app on one screen and browse on another, or be typing out something on one and using the second to show reference material, or have one be the screen and other be a touch keyboard, dungeon defenders on one and IM on the other,
best reason -> xda on one and the other be waiting on that f#@&in 1 min timer for the download websites
aosp on one screen, sense on the other

Dual-Screen Android Tablet Sprint’s “Big Announcement” for February 7th?
7 Comments 18 January 2011 by Dylan Bailey
Worth Reading?
+3 [3 votes]
Just last week Sprint sent out an email to the press inviting them to a special event where they will release an “Industry First.” The internet went crazy with rumors as to exactly what this industry first could be. Was it a 4G iPhone? Probably not, all Android sites were invited to the event. Now we may have a little bit more information as to exactly what it could be – a dual-screen Android tablet.
According to someone apparently close to the matter, the announcement will be a device and will feature the following:
It has large screens- think somewhere between the Evo and the Galaxy Tab.
It actually has dual screens- there’s a primary one but then also a secondary screen that flips up from the back, like on a hinge.
No word on what that second screen does, if it integrates with the primary screen to give you one big screen, or if you can run an app on each, or what. Sorry I couldn’t get more details.
No official word on if it’s voice-capable, or if it’s some kind of tablet/slate.
Also of note, HTC has been in the headlines supposedly preparing a 3D device. Could this be the device? Two screens for a 3D effect? If so, this would even tie in with the whole David Blaine theme of illusions, eye tricks, etc.
What do you think? Could this be a dual-screen tablet? Would a dual-screen tablet be a viable option in the competitive market? Let us know!

lol...didnt think of that.

Well, this could be good news. If it is a dual screen, it could also mean that its dual core?
Hopefully its marketed as a phone, and not a tablet (has calling, texting, etc..)

Ok, so apparently no one else thought to show that this is NOT an industry first:
Dualbook anyone?

That thing is e-ink, its not running Android, and finally is not a phone (I'm wishing here ).
Toshiba and Acer showed off dual screen devices at CES. Neither of them were classified as a tablet (both classified as dual screen laptops) , neither of them run Android, and neither of them have phone capabilities.
I've always dreamed of a phone that folded open (clamshell) with a continuous screen (using flexible AMOLED display) but we are a long way from that.

Ugh, not sure what to make of that. Will wait and hold off the hate until I hear more. Provided it's true.
I'm scared.

Okay guys, we had a run with our top of the line phone. Kills me that we're about to be outed by the "EVO 2". Wasn't expecting a predecessor so quickly.
Lastly, I was at a public event here in Las Vegas, Nevada today called Aviation Nation where the US air force does a little bit of showing off. Well anyways, I saw a surprising amount of EVO's there, at least 6. Versus 4 or 5 iPhone 4's.
What can I say? Phones gone particularly mainstream.

While you're at it, tell them never to release the WiMax 2 Standard and to be sure that all of the newer version of Android 2.3/3/4/5 and so on will work on the HTC Evo.
Also, get Steve Jobs on the line and have Apple file for bankruptcy.

The Desire Z/G2 is 3.7". It also might be a Sprint version of the Merge coming to VZW. That one has a 3.8" screen. I'm just going by the leaked pic of the Knight/Speedy from a couple weeks back. It was noticeably smaller than the EVO.
Do you think it'll be more like shift or evo?
I hope it'll be evo size with full slide out tilting keyboard like touch pro2. I can deal with a little more thickness. But I don't think I want something I can't fit in my pants pocket.

I feel bad for idiots... -.-

I was just browsing the ATT site cause I'm due for an upgrade. The only phone running android other than the aria worth getting is the captivate, but I still love my aria and its gonna take one monster of a phone to get me away from it. Anyway, I stumbled on the aria's product page and read a few 1 star reviews from the "average" person... They generally hate this phone, they don't understand simple concepts... like using the phone correctly... It's so depressing, I'd hate to be such a primitive minded person in these technology driven times, I'd post a link to a guide to root the phone if I didn't already know att would delete it, and possibly punish me for breach of contract.

While it's very l33t and in line with this forum in general to root your phone, in no way does the Aria require rooting. Anyone giving it a 1 star rating probably should just stick to Razr's.
My wife's Aria is stock and she loves it. It's fast, smooth, and besides her seemingly ALWAYS getting "select vs dial" confused in the dialer, she has zero problems with it. Only minor problem she has is seemingly inconsistent battery life.. Sometimes she'll get 2 days, sometimes it's 12 hours, even with her fairly constant type of usage.

oh yeah, I completely agree, the only reason I finally rooted MY aria was for the overclock kernel so I could fully enjoy the SNES emu I paid for. I was so reluctant to root originally cause stock was just so enjoyable for me.
Also, please don't dis the Razr :'( My last phone was a gold Razr V3xx which had bookworm on it with a game scoring over 28 mil, and the sickest tower defense game ever put on a phone via .jar files... But I do get your point

Yeah, it will. There's some super bulky prototype models you can go buy from personal sellers that run you about 300 bucks and is basically an N64 just with a custom plastic molded case for handheld use. But I bet a hacked 3DS will be around much sooner than a phone with native N64 support... Hopefully, I'm wrong, but the best part is, doesn't matter if I am!

To the untrained eye the graphics of a PS1 and N64 may LOOK to be very similar. But there are WAY more factors involved other than how the graphics may appear to look from each system. An N64 emulator as I've read to believe requires almost 5 times the power of the hardware required to run a PS1 emulator. Possibly even MORE hardware power is required depending on the game you want to play (like games that used the expansion pack). The N64 portable emu (short of a modified N64) is a little further off than you may think... But I wouldn't be surprised if some betas spring up sometime this year.

Could this be the big announcement??

Came across this article and it got me thinking. Sprint has a huge announcement to make very soon, and says they are making the impossible possible. My first thought was a glasses free 3D phone. And this just got me really exited for it. HTC wants to be the first to do a 3D phone, the article picture shows an Android phone, and by the coloring its all white and the woman is wearing a yellow scarf. Something Sprint loves to do in tv commercials. Could it possibly be?? Here's the link...

If they implement it properly then yeah, that's one thing. But look at what happened with HDMI. For a while we sacrificed our FPS so they could put a practically useless HDMI port on the phone. I hope there isn't a trade off like that with 3D. I have yet to see a parallax barrier display in person, but from what I have read about it I doubt that won't have a negative effect on how the screen looks with the 3D turned off, which is what i'm worried about. Heck the parallax barrier is a physical lens in front of the screen, how can you turn that off?

That's a good point. I wouldn't want it on all the time, just for show. But again with the 3DS, it suppose to have a on/off switch for the 3D effect so a setting in the phone should be able to do the same.

Sprint's Kyocera Echo dual-screen Android phone announced, we go hands-on (update)
By Nilay Patel posted Feb 7th 2011 6:30PM
Hands-On
Sprint promised us an "industry first" at its event today, and it certainly delivered: check out the Kyocera Echo, the first dual-screen Android phone. That's right, dual-screen -- that's two 3.5-inch 480 x 800 displays which can be unfolded and used as a single 4.7-inch 960 x 800 surface. The screens are connected by a slick sliding liquid-metal hinge that Kyocera's filed several patents on -- the phone can be closed and used like a regular single-screen phone, unfolded all the way, or propped up into the faux-laptop configuration shown above. Under the hood there's a 1GHz second-gen Snapdragon running Android 2.2 -- we'll forgive the older software because Kyocera had to do extensive customization to add dual-screen support to seven core apps like the browser, email, and messaging. The seven optimized apps can be run on each screen individually so you can have the browser up top and email below, and several of them include useful full-dual-screen views as well. There's also a new dual-screen app manager, which is brought up by tapping the two screens simultaneously. Unfortunately, third party apps can't be run in any of the new modes and just fill the entire display for now -- Kyocera and Sprint say an SDK is coming shortly.

it's not a real 7 inch, theres gonna be some kind of bezel in the middle and the big gap, things aren't going to transfer across well, and it's kyocera, I haven't seen 1 good product of theirs and I had a kyocera in the past and it was fail
How about crapping on this product after we see it and learn about it's specs?
This is not the announcement... At least I don't think it is.

Hmmmmm off the bat one would agree but I wonder how apps would actually use the extra screen.

If you're making a joke, funny joke lol
If you're being serious, I've actually put some thought into it. The echo is a good idea, and I really like it for it being the first of it's kind, but the hardware just isn't up to par at all for what it is supposed to be doing. A first gen snapdragon trying to run two programs at the same time would underachieve quite a bit. The two screen thing isn't gonna work (for me and a lot of people anyways) until they get a dual core (or even quad core) processor powering it, when they can make the device thinner, and when they can eliminate they strip in between the two screens when its open. And it would also help if the phone wasn't a kyocera
The Echo has more letters in its name.

LOL I know I have been one, if not the biggest critic of the Echo, but I think if done right, there is potential to a dual screen phone. Most likely it's because of the hype that lead to the event that people are so hard on it, but it might be cool or innovative after all.

If the Echo were announced this time last year, people would be going ape**** over it. I guess in 2011, we're too busy looking for dual core superphones with 2000 mAh batteries.
To be honest, I really wanted to like the Echo. As soon as I heard it had a first-generation Snapdragon, though, most of my hopes went out of the window. If only HTC would give the concept a shot.

THIS JUST IN: APPLE ADDS A SECOND 0.5 INCH SCREEN TO ITS IPHONE. PREORDERS ARE NUMBERING THE BILLIONS AS WE SPEAK.
Urrgh, still kinda pissed off about the failed execution though. If it had something like dual 4 inch screens, I'd be much more interested. As it stands, 3.5 is still too big a downgrade from my Evo's screen, even if the Echo has two of them.

I personally think the evo is big enough. Also running 2 screens on a 1ghz processor I think would slow or lag the device. Just my opinion.

Sarcasm is not easily conveyed in a forum post.
No but really..... they obviously had porn on their mind in the concept.
I know it's a joke, but:
- 2 screens = [approx.] 1/2 the battery life
- Very custom UI = much longer to put out major updates
- Kyocera
The fact they had to optimize several stock Android apps makes me think that there won't be much in the way of dual-screen support... Unless it's a REALLY well-polished app with next-to-no bugs on it, I don't see many developers trying to add support that could break a thousand more things with their apps.
Most apps will probably run similarly to how GBA games run on the DS and DS Lite (I know comparing the phone to the DS is getting overused, but it's the closest example I could think of). You'll probably be able to choose which screen you want used as the display, and that's the one that will be used for those apps without the support.

The echo's a fu*kin joke.
Nothing will truly take advantage of both screens and porting ROMs to it will be a hellish nightmare.
