[HOW TO] Properly delete Swype from your Droid X - Droid X General

I've had issues with uninstalling swype for the longest time. Here is the thorough uninstall process for Swype.
Figured it out from another topic. Swype can be installed PROPERLY now. Working great too. Here are the instructions. Just follow them exactly and you're set.
1.Remove libswype from system/lib (using root explorer, or astro. MUST BE ROOTED to be able to remove files)
2.Remove swype.apk from system/app
3.Reboot into recovery, clear dalvik.cache.
4.Install new swype.
NOTE: To access system/lib and system/app you will need a root-based file manager such as Root Explorer. Root Explorer can be found on the market and is very useful all around.

i dont get it... at the end you say install new swype.. i thought you wanted swype gone?

He says that because the DX has version 1.64(?) And the latest is on version 2.15 (I think?). The builtin version can't be upgraded with the normal installer.

Where is version 2.15?

when i try to delete libswype/swype.apk it tells me I can because they're read only. any idea?

[Q] Swype for MyTouch 4G

I love the swype feature on the android phones so far. While I was trying to upgrade to a newer version, it says "Application cannot be installed". I even deleted the old version with Titanium Backup Pro and tried to install the new one and no go Is there a reason why I can't install it?

Try to reboot your phone after you uninstall it..
ive been having the same problem with trying to uninstall swype and install new version....sadly i cant...any tips....or work around
I was in a thread about this weeks ago and we hadn't figured it out... we wanted the mic button.. tried the G2 swype and it wouldn't work.. I gave up for now. thanks to nandroid when I lost my original! There is yet another thread around here somewhere with the original swype to go back to stock... or just flash iced glacier.. its dope fast and the genius button loads way faster
This can be done, you need a few things first,
need to be rooted
need root explorer
need a new copy of swype
You need to kill the existing swype process, go into Settings, Applications, Manage Applications, All, find Swype, Force Stop, Clear Data.
Use 7zip to extract the new Swype(i found one via google that is red and black with the mic button) Once extracted you will need to find "libSwypeCore.so" its under \lib\armeabi
copy both Swype.apk and libSwypeCore.so to your SD card, make sure the CASE matches the above.
Open Root Explorer Mounr R/W, and copy Swype.apk to \system\app overwrite the existing file
then copy libSwypeCore.so from your SD card and copy to \system\lib overwrite the existing file
if you dont get an overwrite mesage your file case is incorrect, doublecheck it.
reboot your phone and navigate back to system\app and install Swype.apk, you shouldnt have any trouble now.
goto settings\language & keyboard and open swype settings, then go back and check the swype check box.
your swype should be fully functional now.

These files can be found on in any rom that has Swype installed with the rom. What Rom are you trying to put it on?
Finally got Swype to work...
... after rooting, I wanted to install Swype. Downloaded via the Swype webpage, but kept getting "Trial Period Has Ended."
They suggested uninstalling the older version, and reinstalling via the Installer. Problem was, uninstalling was not an option. The work around is: Using a root file explorer (I used AntTek Explorer), you'll need to rename/delete the existing Swype files in order to reinstall the newer working version. To do this, start your root-explorer and navigate to /system/app/Swype.apk, and rename it (I added .bak to the file name). Then do the same for /system/lib/libSwypecore.so
Now reboot your phone, then rerun the Swype Installer! Wallla!
I ran swype for a few hours, and found I didn't like it.

APK application not installed

I am using root explorer to copy the city id and 3g hotspot apk from my sd card to system /app but every time I try to install I get application not installed. I changed permissions and everything. I do not know what I am doing wrong. I un installed them with titanium and want to restore them. I did a backup but did not see an option to reinstall. So, I just downloaded the apk's and am doing it this way.
Where did you get the apk's? I need the City id

Here is where I downloaded the cityid apk. Hope it helps. I do not even know if it was the right one. They are for the Droid X but I assumed since they are similar it would work but I can not ge it to install to my system /app

APK doesn't install
Yes, there's something strange going on with the TAB.
I get "application not installed" when I try to reinstall the mail app. I've also tried moving the APK into the system/app folder but it won't even with r/w access.
I've also tried installing with adb, but that throws INSTALL_FAILED_DEXOPT.
The same file installs fine on my HTC Desire.
I used Superoneclick to root the TAB, and terminal seems to get su without problem, but I think there's something I'm missing.
Any help gratefully received.

Running CM7 and I want to upgrade to the new swype. How do I uninstall the old one?

the problem is I installed it using ROM manager so i dont have the file on my sd card. anyone know how to remove the old swype?
If you have Titanium Backup you can uninstall if from there and then use Root Explorer to delete libSwypeCore.so from /system/lib. Reboot, then use the Swype Installer to install the latest.

For those that might have stumbled into this post, and don't have titanium, you can go into your settings-->manage applications and uninstall it the normal way as well.

True. And the libSwypeCore.so file will still need to be deleted manually before Swype will install from Swype Installer I believe.
Open file manager
Search Swype
Delete
It's in the guide I made too

Recently flashed Malice v5. Now get message that I have to update swype which requires uninstalling except that under app management there is no option under swype to uninstall. I unistalled the installer and deleted the apk. What else can I do?

Got to system/lib/
Delete libSwypeCore.so
Rerun Swype installer.
you can use titanium backup to uninstall it.
then when you install it through the installer, it will show up in manage apps in settings.
Thanks jneal9 but I can not delete the file. I have Astro and File Expert. Neither worked.
Thanks funeralthirst. Was able to uninstall but I still need to delete the .so file
after much searching I found an alternative to root explorer- super manager. was able to delete the .so file
Thanks for the help. I learn something new everyday.

Try root explorer, astro can't access the file.
I was trying to install the lastest swype beta apk following almost all the steps above (I didn't erased the files, only renamed them) but wasn't successful, is there any other way? I'm using ES Explorer (with Root Explorer option checked)
The above mentioned steps worked for me:
-uninstall with Titanium
-delete the libswypecore.so file
I used Super Manager for the root explorer. Search marketplace for this. It's free and Root Explorer is not. In either of them you need to change the permissions of the file from r/o to r/w (read only to read write).
The thing with Titanium is that once before i've tried to install a new email app, so I used this Titanium to uninstall it first and when i've run the installer it showed "Application Not Installed" no matter how many times I excuted it, and this totally messed my phone up, I had to odin back to stock!
So, in this case is safe to unistall Swype and the installer apk won't give that error?
I make no guarantees but what is mentioned in this thread works. And, as I've learned the hard way, you should make a backup of your phone before flashing anything.
Follow the above steps. Not only remove the AOL but also the file"kinetoscope.so". Use root explorer or super manager to do this.
It seems like it's alot of work but once you have everything you need it goes fast. Searching for the answer is the hardest part.

ok 2 things
1. ES File Manager (Root explorer for free on market
2. when you uninstall Swype using Titanium Reboot phone before reinstalling Swype. Same with most applications. Rebooting clears out the temp files that can corrupt a reinstallation.
Hi,
I've only had an android phone for a month or two (Samsung Galaxy S2, 2.3.3 Gingerbread, not rooted)
I have the same problem removing swype with no 'uninstall' option (trying to update to new version). All of these solutions seem to require a rooted droid, is that the case or have I misunderstood?
Can anyone offer a solution that does not involve rooting?
Thanks!

If Swype came preinstalled you won't be able to remove it without root.
Thanks for your reply jneal9. Swype did not come pre-installed on my phone, I had to download the beta to be able to use it.
However, after I updated the Swype Installer (so that I could then update Swype itself) it gives the message "Sorry, the Swype Beta is currently unavailable for devices that have Swype preinstalled" (which it definitely did not).
Is this something that anyone has come across before? I'm a bit surprised that it seems like this application (although I do realize that it is a Beta) cannot be uninstalled without rooting the phone!
Thanks!
This also happened to me when i was on malice v5. i tried everything to get swype back but to no avail. i switched from that to miui because malice will soft boot while ur on the phone when u have 30% or less battery.
I had the same problems and hopefully this will help others: first I had tried to restore Swype from Titanium and got Force Closes. Then, I downloaded a new version of Swype and after deleting the old installed: "Application Did Not Install" then I went to /system/lib and saw that libswypecore.so was NOT there. So after many combinations of the above recommendations, I finally did this: deleted all traces of Swype, rebooted phone, used Root Explorer to change /system/apps to R/W, copied the latest Swype in, ran the install (success), then EXTRACTED the libswypecore.so from the Swype.apk and manually copied to /system/lib and changed the permissions to the recommended settings above. Worked! No Swype alerts me to a new version, I download within Swype, it asks to replace, I say yes, and the installation fails! At least the version I loaded still works.

[Q] Update downloaded to phone - Where is it stored?

So my phone downloaded the update and keeps trying to get me to install the update. Where is the update stored on the phone? I want to delete it.
I am still running a older version of SACS ROM and don't want to install it and want to get rid of all the prompts to install it.

I followed the directions in the post:
Navigate to:
/system/app: change fwupgrade.apk to fwupgrade.old and keychain.pak to keychain.old
/system/etc/security: change otacerts.zip to otacerts.old
Now reboot to recovery mode and wipe cache. Reboot system to GUI. If update appears, accept install. Countdown will appear but nothing will be installed.
The update notification will no longer appear.
1st - I don't have a fwupgrade.apk in /system/app (I even did a search for it and couldn't find it anywhere)
2nd - When I try to rename or delete the otacers.zip (in the /system/etc/security) it won't let me. It just says it can't be renamed or can't be deleted.
I am using ES File Explorer.

You must mount the directory as 'read/write' to modify.
Not sure where that option is in ES but if you have root it's there I think.
You may not have the fwupgrade.apk OR you may just not be able to see it with that Explorer if you don't have the option checked to see system/root apps.
I use Root Explorer worth every penny for me.
BUT you can use ROM Toolbox - the Lite version(free) does have a root explorer that will let you mount as R/W.
