Just got Shift, Having Data Issues - EVO Shift 4G General

Well I just upgraded to the Shift from the Samsung Moment, but with the data issues I'm having it sure doesn't seem like. I cannot connect to 4G even though I'm in the heart of a 4G area (zip code 75001, just outside of Dallas). Every time I scan for 4G service, it just says Disconnected about 5 seconds later.
Using the Speedtest.net app, I'm averaging maybe 60-70kbps download speed on the 3G network. When I download apps the downloading generally pauses for several seconds.
For the record, I have done the data reset (##3282#), but that didn't help at all.
Any suggestions, or could it be I just have a bad phone?

Done that a few times but still no improvement.

Hm
I think it would be wise to talk to a Sprint representative over the phone, or show the problem to them in person.
It kinda sucks to pay a $10 monthly surcharge for 4G if you're in the network and are not getting it (worse if there's no 4G nearby)
I myself have not used 4G yet (live right on the edge of the network)
They should hopefully help you out
I too have a problem with connecting to 4G but that may just be my area

I know you have probably already done this but I would try powercycling if you haven't already.

Try comparing it to the display. I noticed that the wimax radio is kinda deaf when compared to my old epic. It doesn't lock as often as the old phone. There might be an update that helps some of these issues.

Ok you need to reactivate the phone pretty simple to do
Get ur msl either from msl reader on the market or ask sprint
Go to dialer dial ##3282# hit edit mode and enter ur msl
Click on data profile then hit the menu button and click restore
Let the phone reboot and go through hands free activation again
Tada speeds should be back to normal!

Appears to just be the location I'm in at work. Just tested it while I was driving around and got good speeds: 4G (at 6-8 megs download) and 3G (.5-1 megs). So I guess my phone is good.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

Mine won't pick up at work inside. I step outside and it is fine. :-(

I'm having same problem. I did a side by side with my phone and the display in Sprint store...I got about 120 Kbps and the display got about 1200 Kbps.
I don't know if the store is doing the 3282 thing every day on the display, but when I do it I get a bump up in speed then it decreases again over time.

Mine does the same thing, I've had sprint smartphones for over 2 years and all have been at a constant 70-120kbs (kilobytes) however this phone averages about 30-40(kilobytes) using SpeedTest.net app and the meter is very jerky as if it's having trouble maintaining a data connection. Occasionally the phone will spit out 120-130kbs with a rock solid meter, but then will revert back to the constant 30-40kbs tests.
I've tried the ##3282## to reset the data profile, reformatted the phone a few times and updated the profile and PRL. My battery life is also not very good at all, and I'm assuming because it's having such a hard time keeping a cellular connection.
I hope the radio is not dead, and that a simple radio update would fix this problem.
I'm open to suggestions as this is really driving me insane, but I love the phone.

I was having a very similar issue, and when I checked ##33284# under evdo, it showed failed. Apparently 3G connection or not the phone shows the 3G icon.

I didn't know about the ##33284# field test, thanks for sharing. My Evdo status is connected. I noticed that both the Evdo & GPS list Latitude & Longitude and both of them are different, and are hundreds of miles off from my locations, seems a bit odd.
I'm hoping HTC is aware of the inconsistent data problem and will send an OTA update to correct soon.

I'm really disappointed in the 4G (maybe more of a Sprint issue than a Shift issue?). I can never connect to it very long before it goes back to scanning for a network so basically it's not worth the battery drain it causes. I'm primarily in areas that should get 4G easily.

Thats weird, at work, in Charlotte, my 4G flys, its almost faster than the wifi at my apartment.

First test was unplugged while holding it, 2nd plugged in while holding it, 3rd unplugged while not holding it and 4th was plugged in while not holding it.
I did get a test that sad 1.1m in between there, but I threw it out figuring it was a fluke.
I haven't done anything to the phone but remove the mp3, stocks, peep, nfl, and nascar apps. Haven't done the ##3282#. Seems pretty consistent on my end, then again it is 2:30 in the morning here, but it seems to be good for me all day.
It does seem that holding the phone makes a difference, to me at least.

what is considered good 3g speeds? Just tried mine at home and it is
509kbps down
63kbps up
this test done with the phone laying on the couch. Then I picked it up and did the test while holding
171 down
31 up
I only had 1 bar while doing these test. Seems as soon as I pick up the phone it the signal strength goes down.

also, by signal strength goes up when I have the keyboard slid out

just adding in about the speeds, i've been getting good signal and data rates everywhere i've been so far with the phone. then again, its winter, so i'm not traveling atm. We'll see what happens come may when i'm going through the mountains of WV.
and i can get good 4g while at work (close to DC, but not that close).
my speeds are: down/up
wifi -- 18mbps/7.5mbps (note, we have a 50mb/s pipe coming in the house)
4g -- 4mbps/1mbps
3g -- 0.8mbps/0.3mbps
i dunno if those are good or not, but gotta say, they beat the hell out of what my old PPC6600 got with its 1xRTT connection. cant wait to get tethering to work on this thing.

I have that issue as well, idk why it happens but I'll add it to the list of problems for when I call to get a replacement.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
That just happened to me today also. It switched from "H" to "E", then when I opened USA Today it FC-ed and the icon turned into a generic Android one like the app was on the SD card and unavailable (even though it's installed to phone) and then 5 more background apps that I didn't even know were running FC-ed (Amazon MP3, Finance, QuickOffice, something and then Facebook three times?) and the phone locked up. I was able to power off then back on, but data never came back even after waiting about 10 minutes until I powered off and on again. Quite odd.
I get the same issue where am connected to wifi and as soon as i walk away from it it doesnt connect back to the data network. I got a replacement phone coming so hopefully i dont have the same issue. Another thing is the random reboot and i get black screen a lot especially after rebooting
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I've had the issue, but each time it appears to be related to JuiceDefender not properly enabling the radio. If I shut JuiceDefender off, the connection comes back, although sometimes its just easier to airplane mode it and be done with it.
I called T-Mo about it, they said call about a week after the inital release date and see if they have a fix by then, there isnt enough information kept since it hasnt been officially released yet.
I'm having the same trouble. Are you guys on the new sim card? I popped in the new sim card and the tech told me to not use it and just save it. I noticed when I put the new sim card a notification of a new voicemail came on. I didn't have any voicemail.
Edit: I'm starting to have some serious data issues. I'll get cut off, but my phone will still show full bars and "H". I try the whole airplane thing and it still does nothing. I constantly get the "check network setting, try again or cancel". My market wont load, browser says "unable to connect." This is getting stupid. When I call T Mobile it always start working and then cuts off shorty after hanging up. I've never had this isssue before. I live in the middle of the city. Only 3G around here. Its getting annoying.
Guys I'm afraid that it might problem with the antenna placement. Holding the phone on the bottom half will drop me from 3 bars of "H" to 4 bars of "G", then it will bounce back up to 4 bars of "E". If left on a desk then it will remain at 3-4 bars of "H". I notice this especially at a place where I have low-mid signal, such as my school (reinforced concrete FTL). When I have a strong 4 bar signal, it usually won't drop all the way down to edge but I do loose a few bars. I hope a simple software issue is enough to reduce this effect. I might be being crazy paranoid but I'm definitely noticing a lower signal than on my G1.
Try holding the phone by the edges, then hold it in a normal grip and see if the signal strenght changes (Menu->settings->status->signal strength)
I just got off the phone with tmo and was told its a known issue with the network affecting about 10% of users. The issue started for me yesterday on my hd2. He also said they have people working on it. I asked if I could get my buyers remorse set back 14 more days to ensure the issue is not permanment but he said that they are no longer doing extentions. I'm sure if I get tranfered to retentions the answer would change. I hope.

Wow that's funny, my MYTOUCH does the same thing with airplane mode off/on. I also remember that the store demo g2 I played with last night had the voicemail icon in the notification bar, but when you pull the bar down, there's no option to connect and retrieve the voicemail. I found that even weirder since the phone comes preloaded with google voice.
Also experiencing the same issue here in Phoenix. Been having it since I got the phone on Monday.
I have been in an ongoing round of tech calls and will be having a follow-up with the tech who I spoke with last night... I've tried everything from APN resetting to swapping the SIM card to a total factory wipe -- nothing is changing this for me.
I *know* my neighborhood has full 3G access, but I am maxed out at 1 Mbps. (Before the factory wipe I was getting 0.35 Mbps.) If this doesn't change I may just return the phone and switch to Sprint to get the Epic 4G. I mean, I'm not getting HSPA+ coverage either way, and at least with the Samsung Galaxy S Pro I'd have a full 5-row qwerty...
>_<
Wow, this is really too bad. I was SO excited about this phone...

If this happens, try going to settings->wireless->mobile network->network operators and see if you get an "Error while searching for networks" error as I did.
Reset fixed for me too. But it makes me worry.
I'm on a brand new sim card (switched to TM from ATT). I'm having some data issues too. I talked to TM tech support and they reset my connection but that did nothing. Now they're going to their android techs to see whats up.

leaving 4G has always bogged my CPU

Have you guys ever noticed your phone slowing down as it constantly switches between 3G and 4G? Living in Austin, I probably make the switch a few hundred times a day, depending on what building I'm in, and where my phone is sitting.
There are plenty of times where I pull my phone out of my pocket, and it's very warm, and running horrendously slow. I typically notice the 4G icon, so I disable it altogether. Usually within about 30-60 seconds, my Evo is responsive once again. I have used every stock ROM, and about 6 custom as well. All behave IDENTICALLY.
I really have had only one instance where 4G was useful, and that's when I was at a restuarant, and I wanted to tether my laptop. I was able to get a solid 4G signal, and it seemed to work great. I did find out, however, they had free WIFI, like almost every business does these days.
Not so sure I'm really sold on the 4G stuff, even though almost everywhere I go in Central Texas has good signal. It seems to waste far too much CPU as it switches back and forth, enabling/disabling radios, or whatever. If I'm in Dolphin browser, and it switches radios, the phone appears to lock up sometimes... quite annoying... happens all the time.
Anyone else with similar issues? I know most people aren't even in 4G areas though.

Well in general I noticed this cpu spike on my sense roms even when it was turning 3g back on after leaving a wifi spot. I really blame HTC's inneficient code, since CM6 handles this so much better. I did try 4G out in my area and thought it was better on my cpu than 3g was though.

After you use 4g, you need to reboot your phone. The 4g icon may go away but the phone is going to keep searching for the 4g signal. Known issue/bug. You can ssearch the forums and find lots more info on it. Free app called alogcat will show you this by conintuing to try and connect to winmax.
I live in Austin, too and use the 4g toggle quite a bit, especially closer to town, while at concerts or football games.

That explains why when I leave 4G on regularly, I have to reboot my phone at least once a day from slowdowns... If I leave 4G off, I tend to last almost a week before I get frustrated enough to reboot.
Really disappoints me, and I was hoping I was an isolated example. I had done several searches for this, and didn't see any results. I guess because not many people have 4G, and those that do probably toggle it on specifically for use when they are in a 4G area. Seems to me that 4G is only useful when you are sitting still... if I am in the car and I leave it on, my phone get sluggish as hell, and my battery can be dead in under an hour.

I believe the bug only occurs if you have a 4G widget on one of your home screens. You may be able to remove it and turn on via settings as a workaround.
Correct. Don't use the widget to toggle 4g. Go into settings and turn it on that way and you wont get the lag.

Only turn on 4G when you are actually going to use it than turn it off. Most web tasks do not require 4G and it will improve battery life.
theres a couple guides out there for editing your 4g in and out times, signal requirements log in delays, ect. those will help big time, and you should be resetting your phone once a day anyway for good usage, also it helps to if your using 4g, turn off the mobile network because its pointless to run both radios at the same time [helpful if you have myns with the data in the notifications menu for easy chaning]

Can you confirm that turning off the mobile network from the power-button drop-down menu actually does anything? On my phone, when It detects 4G or WIFI, the 3G icon disappears for a bit, then turns into the new one. That leads me to believe that it automatically does that for us...
I use 4G every day. I have "mobile data always on" set to on demand, so when I turn on 4G via the Extended Controls widget I use, 3G automatically turns off. Haven't had any phone slow down since I started using this method. When I turn 4G off, 3G automatically restarts, so one or the other is always on. I keep 4G always on at home, and only turn it on while out if I'm watching using large amounts of data.
At some point I made some changes in how long my phone will try to stick with 4G when there's a strong 3G signal, and that helped with streaming music/data while on long drives.
The only time you should see CPU usage is when the radios are toggling on, and off. Also when you turn 4G off, yes if you look in logcat you see that WiMAX is doing something but that's about it. IIRC it is checking the status of the 4G radio to see if it is on. The radio is off though, verified by monitoring the current drain in almost real time. The 4G radio draws about 200-300mA itself. The "4G Toggle for EVO" app by Jason Calhoun (see Market) so far has given me the least amount of hassle of the 4G widgets out there, and most of the time I don't have to worry about turning off 4G after a reboot.
On average with my current configuration I draw about 254mA (3G /display @26%/doing nothing), 188mA on WiFi. The lowest I've seen was 89mA (just coming out of sleep), and the highest I was ever to draw was 996mA (everything on, turned up, playing Angry Birds).
Under 4G settings make sure network notification is unchecked, if not the phone is forever scanning for a signal, especially if you're toggling bad. If you have it unchecked even when you use the widget it will only search the initial time when you turn on the widget. Can't say this will solve the issue, but at least stop the phone from continuously scanning for a signal should help. You can only uncheck network notification while 4G is checked. Hope it helps cause i'm in the centex area also(Waco). It helped for me when told to me by EVO owners.
Sent via HTC Supersonic: EVO 4G
I've also noticed my Evo seems really sluggish when 4G is on. Like, to the point that I always leave it off, because it makes my phone barely usable sometimes when it is on, even when I am standing right next to the 4G tower. I read through here and I'm going to try removing the HTC widget for 4G from my home screen, maybe that'll help.

But until/unless you reboot the phone, the WiMax continues to check the status of the 4g radio. So that would make the phone sluggish. Even with no toggle on a home screen or any screen, just doing it manually, when turned off it keeps scanning. Right Thats what alogcat shows until the phone is rebooted.
I have turned off 4g and gone about my business and been fine - went almost 30 hours on one charge and had 4g on for about 2 hours of that, so it may not be a major battery drain amp wise, but it appears to continue to scan even when turned off.
From a 2-day trial I can definitely say that my phone seems much more responsive since I removed the 4G widget. I replaced all the HTC radio widgets with the stock android one (which, of course, doesn't have 4G) and my phone seems very responsive. At the same time, I turned on 4G via the settings menu and I've left it on. It seems to be working well.

[Q] Signal bar goes from full to nothing randomly

Ever since I got a replacement phone Ive had this issue- while on the Sprint network my signal will randomly go from full to nothing at all. Yet when I use roam control to go into roaming, the signal always stays at full strength
The other thing I noticed is that when I dial into the 3282 menu, someone elses username is there instead of mine. When I run connectbot and use getprop, no MSL # is there either
Anyone know whats going on with the phone and if this can be fixed?
getprop ril.MSL
It is filtered from just getprop.
My signal has always done that.
Updated profile may fix the user name?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Thanks that command did the trick to get the msl- I was able to go in and manually change the username now.
Is there any settings in the data menu to improve the signal? Its almost like its jumping back and forth between a good and bad tower?
Not that I know of. That is what I suspect is the case with me as I have about 3 towers that are surrounding me from various sides and I think it is hopping between them... not sure there is anything to do for it but I haven't really seen any ill effects from it.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
The weird thing is it never used to do this before when I first got the phone. When I was in the same areas the signal bar was always full and would never drop. I wonder if its a tower issue or something they changed with an update.
Sometimes when people call me they say it goes straight to voicemail though which worries me
Could be the modem. Some people think el30 is not as good as ei22 or ec05. Maybe try some others.
For calls calls going to vm, that can happen if you are using data in a 1x area. Also can happen if you have accidentally switched on ddtm in call settings.

This is going to be plain and a tad bit retarded but a solution is WiFi, as far 3G and 4G mine has always done this but i can testify that in my house i used to get ****ty service like 0 to 1 bar when i was on EC05 i switched EL30 now to FB15 and say much more improvement more consistent to 3-4 bars.
PRL updates could help if you roam around there. newest as of today is 60685
I've been having this problem too for about two months now. But as you said roaming works fine so I just assume it's a sprint tower issue and force roam whenever I'm on wifi.
I have had this issue for a year or so... started a while after I first rooted.
You can hold my epic in one hand, my wife's epic in the other... her bars stay steady, maybe fluctuate between 2 or 3 bars occasionally... mine randomly and erratically jump from 2 or 3 to nothing, stay there for 30 seconds or so... and jump back up.
While its annoying and distracting, I've never had a problem with dropping calls or losing data. I even took the phone apart to make sure the antenna had not come loose. Problem persisted over several roms and several modem Odin flashes, just won't go away!
Mine does the same, it'll have full bars, drop down to nothing, but my 3g/4g still work fine (off wifi)... i just ignore the signal bars because most of the time my data still works, albeit a tad slow.

[Q] Nexus 4 Signal Strength... Antenna Firmware Radio Problem? anyone else?

I have Straight Talk AT&T, and so far my experience has been mixed. Sometimes I get full reception and generally awesome speeds (coming from Sprint's slow ass network), other times I get absolutely no service, sometimes it randomly jumps into roaming and i can't get data.. and it stays 'stuck' in roaming mode.. I have to turn airplane mode on/off to fix it.
This all happens without my leaving my desk.
Apparently it isn't limited to Straight Talk AT&T though http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2038963 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2037780
What's going on.. Am I part of a small group, or is this a larger issue..
OpenSignal Screenshots..

Notice the jump in bars between the two screenshots
same. hopefully they fix all these issues with a new radio. and also losing data while on a phone call!!!
Weird...on mine the bars go all the way down but when i do internet test i still get high connection. Also my internet works fine. Usually bars go down when i hold phone from top right.

sometimes I lose all bars and am still talking on the phone. so strength meter is off and doesn't mean much at this point.
Mine goes all over the place with ST ATT just sitting it on a table
well hows att reception in your area in general? mines pretty steady as far as 1 bar give or take. but theres sometimes I will sit at zero bars all together and still have service. I wouldn't worry about it too much as long as your able to make and receive phone calls etc

So it's been determined that it's not a hardware problem?
well its still early to tell. the phone is still very new so they have plenty of time to tweak the radio and fix bugs. lets hope its not some kind of weak radio hardware issue.
I've been having these as well. Quite annoying, but the data connection still pulls data and works. I've requested an RMA device and should be here tomorrow. Going to test with that, if it's the same then I'd keep this one I already have. Sometimes even if I have full service 5 bars, data will not work. The H will still be on stop of the signal bars, but it won't download/update any data, if I'm using any apps, it'll just hang.

What is the process for going about getting a replacement... and keep us posted on whether or not you see any changes..
let us know If the replacement is better. which I don't think so. but if your on original 4.2 with older baseband stay there. don't update and play with the data then. see if its good. then when satisfied update and see if the same problems arise then you know its software bugs

My N4 pretty much does the exact same thing. Actually, I'm on my replacement phone and it does the same thing as my first one.
which makes me believe its a software bug. or hardware fault. i'm having some faith in software lol :good:
I sure hope it's a software issue, because my connection really sucks. It drops out constantly, but never dropped out a single time on my Backflip during normal hours (only 2 times around midnight during server maintenance or something)
Do you think I should try T-Mobile and see if my issues are resolved..
I just discovered this phone info settings, via *#*#464 or whatever it was.. Is there a particular setting it should be on, not WCDMA Preferred?
I'm having the same problem: the signal strength is very erratic. I'm on Rogers in Canada, which is same frequencies as AT&T.
I've never seen such erratic signal strength before.
On the other hand, though I haven't had it very long and haven't put it through its paces, I haven't noticed any significant signal issues, like dropped calls. So, I don't want to jump to any conclusions that what I'm observing is actually a problem.
Does anyone know of an app that tests the quality of my data connection? I know everyone uses speedtest.net but that just tests burst speed and I'd like something that will test the consistency of my connection too.
same problem
I'm having the same difficulty. Signal can be at 3 bars then all of a sudden goes to 0 bars.
Has anyone determined if this is a software or hardware fault? Any solutions?
Thanks

Same exact behavior I'm seeing. I hope this is a software issue.

[Q] Loosing Data Service

This is my 3rd Sprint S4 over the past few months. All of the devices are loosing the 3g icon but will show bars. Voice and text works fine, data and 4g does not, i have noticed it usually happens when i leave a WiFi area and it has trouble switching back over to cell data. I can reboot the phone and about 80% of the times it will return to normal. I have used odin to reload to factory. I had my phone rooted only and recently install the Triforce rom to see if it was a software or Kernel issue. Same thing is happening on that rom as well. It doesnt matter where i am so i dont beleive its a tower issue. Any idea?
This happens to me as well. Just Sprint being crappy. Try turning airplane mode on and off, same effect as a reboot but faster.
I tried the airplane mode toggle but didnt seem to fix it. If i use even the "Hot reboot" option in triforce rom that doesnt fix it either.
Assuming this this is the same issue I always experience, there is no fix. It's a network thing. Is there 4G in your area?
What happens to me is my phone will be on 3G, then start receiving 4G, but it doesn't recognize that the data service is now different, so nothing works for 15+ minutes or until I toggle airplane mode on/off.
I take it you've tried just turning WiFi off?
Haha, yea, welcome to Sprint. Enjoy losing data when it's least convenient (such as when you need to use navigation or missed your exit and need to be rerouted). Oh well, the price we pay for unlimited data, right?
I have noticed the same thing since I activated my LTE radio. LTE is expanding in my area so I constantly go in and out of 3G and LTE service. Sometimes when this happens data just ****ing stops working until I enter airplane mode and then come back out of it (a reset works as well). For some reason (or it is just a coincidence) The problem has amplified since installing 4.3. Has anyone else noticed an increase in this problem since upgrading? This is absolutely a Sprint problem? Do we know that people have this same issue with other Sprint phones?
I have the same problem. From wifi to f data takes a little bit of time for it to switch over especially since the data toggle is gone with the 4.3 update. Unlimited plan is water downed from my experience compared to tmoblie. But tmoblie service was horrible.

Well Sprint's speed has always been an issue for most of us. That is no surprise. I at least expect to to work AT ALL which apparently it is incapable of doing recently.

If wifi is on 3g/4g is not there,, turn off wifi and you should see icon,, if you see bars it's most likely working :sly:
Edit just re read your post, I have the same issues sometimes and as posted above toggling on and off typical works for me,, good luck
Also is your network set to
CDMA/LTE/EVDO? Just throwing out ideas

I get this issue all the time & I have to do a battery pull to get my phone working again. Anyone flash a new modem which fixes this? The SGS4 is 10x worse than my HTC EVO 3D was with this issue.

Seems like a hardware problem based on your description. I am fully convinced that this whole flashing modems things is just a feel-good measure for people who have exhausted all other options. It was big in the Galaxy S2 days, but I have never seen any measurable difference between modems in any meaningful metric on that device. At least not one that could not be attributed to other factors such as signal quality and network load, and nothing consistent. A different modem isn't going to fix a hardware fault or magically improve Sprint's awful service.
