i hope this isn't a common issue, but i feel like it should be. when in browser, swype will never autospace after a word. everythingwillwritelikethis. it works in opera mini though. is there a fix for this? thanks.
Mine does the same thing. Drives me crazy. I'm sure there is an easy fix, I just haven't looked. I have noticed that the space bar has a little red circle with line through it. Almost like its disabled or something. Anyway, hopefully someone can help us

Well, I'm on stock Rom (DI18) and swype doesn't auto-space while in the address bar.... that is the only time I've noticed it (posted ok in forums, used it for searches, etc). The "little red circle" is showing you that auto-space is disabled. You can still press the space bar and it will work.
Pretty sure it does this because URL's dont have spaces. Sucks for when you are using the address bar for searching though.
If you use the search button it will auto space. If you use the address bar it won't. I think its that way because when you use the address bar for a multi word url its not supposed to be spaces, such as www.writeexamplehere.com you would then get annoyed having to delete the spaces from the url. When doing a general search, I just is the search button so it will auto space.

So this is something that kinda bothers me.
After Damage Control's V1 (2.1) this is pretty much the only thing I can think of to ***** about
If you're in the browser, at some random web page, and you press the search hard button... there is no damn space bar! The search button does bring up the search bar, but you have to goto the symbols just to press the space after each button. Its a real PITA.
Is this something that would be difficult to fix?

Are you pressing search while IN THE BROWSER? The search works fine in any other program. Just not in the browser.
I just nand'ed back to my 1.5 modaco rom and it is the same way... no space bar.

It's probably the HTC STOCK keyboard that's causing this, because in Darch's rom he has the stock android keyboard in it.

Yah that's because of the keyboard. Download the Android keyboard, and you should have a spacebar.

I can confirm this happens in a vanilla install of DamageControl V1.0 -espresso- I can also confirm that this did not happen with my stock 1.5 build.
Do you folks think this is a 2.1 bug from HTC that is affecting ALL 2.1 roms sporting sense and the HTC keyboard then?
Is it something that can be easily fixed in the code?

Indeed!
The first "search" brings up the URL search and URL keyboard. It is designed for searching URLs and space is not a valid character in URL. Note that the
text in the search box says "Search or type URL".
Pressing "search" again, calls up a normal text search, and thus you get the keyboard with a space, and the text in the search box says "Quick Search Box".
Therefore, it's not a bug or an omission - it is by design.

Dave

Thats exactly what i was gonna say! The first search option for websites doesnt include the spacebar cuz there is never a space is a url... therefore this is a misunderstanding of how the software functions. A different keyboard will not change how the browser's search function works. It will still by default show url searches first. Changing browsers may help...

BRILLIANT!
That is actually quite well designed now that I am aware!
This phone and forum never cease to amaze me.
I'm a little late to this conversation, looks like you guys got it figured out.
Is this just me or anyone else? Back on my N1 it would bring up the keyboard on top of any screen/app I was on.. On my Vibrant it brings up a search screen with the keyboard..
This disables me being able to use Swype's cursor menu for selecting text, copying/pasting. I don't know if anyone else uses it like that?
On the Swype keyboard, swype from the tips key to the sym key, left to right.

Reading comprehension fail.
He's problem is that a search field opens with a long press of the menu key, making the swype arrow keys useless when you want to use them outside of a text field.

More like a misunderstanding, douche.
He's out of luck though, since like he said long press of menu only brings up search, not the keyboard like the N1. I believe they did this because you international Galaxy S didn't have a search button, so to take its place they made it available by a long press of the menu. Though, I don't know why they didn't remove that on our T-Mobile Vibrant since we already have a separate button for it.

Vocabulary fail.
Last time I checked, misunderstanding what someone wrote = not comprehending what was read.
I was just joking anyways.
Have fun calling me names like a kid, pointing out typos (a typo on xda?! whaaaat?!), just next time actually RTFA.
Thanks for the insightful responses my fellow Vibranteers. Lol.
I agree it's pretty annoying. A friend was trying an older Android app that assumes you have a physical keyboard, and as a result, there is no way to force the soft keyboard to open.
You have to wonder how Samsung concluded the search button wasn't adequate for accessing search...
Menu lp for me is the keyboard, as it should be for everyone. Lp search is a choice of with vlingo or google voice search.
lp menu for me is search also......very very annoying!
For me as well... (I'm on stock TW)
Menu LP brings up the keyboard -- and the quick-search box in the top half of the screen.
Anybody figure out how to chnge this behaviour?
I have Button-Shorcut set to go to dialer with LP. As there is no hardware phone button,.SP search. + KB. I wish this app was able to map menu button that would be great.
Is your phone Loki? Use Odin. You'll be Thor!
I asked Steve Jobs and he told me that you guys are long pressing the button wrong
Does anybody else hate it when you press the fn key and try to correct something by pressing backspace and the whole message gets deleted? Any way to turn that feature off? It has happened to me way too many times now.
You might be able to edit the keyboard mappings to do this, but I don't have any experience in that area.
I just have gotten into the habit of holding modifier keys instead of tapping before the next key.

sometimes you are typing fast and then you try to add a question mark or something. you make a mistake and it still has that FN command blinking and you don't notice...you press backspace and bye bye to your whole message.
While were talking about keyboard issues here (since I couldn't really find another place to ask) does anyone know how to "select all" which would normally be ctrl + A, for the epic. I was using gmail and wanted to delete "all" my spam mail at once instead of one by one. I know it something I did on my N900 easily due to the physical keyboard but after reading through the keyboard shortcuts from Cnet I didn't see this particular shortcut listed.

Thanks for replying, I tried to long press on the screen in gmail but it only selects the the email I tap and when I long press the actual label for spam it doesn't do anything. I guess regular pc keyboard shortcuts aren't available with the keyboard on the epic, which is unfortunate... I love the keyboard though.

fn backspace
Any one have any news on this issue, regarding turning off the FN+backspace = erasing an entire line?
It happens to me AT LEAST once a week, but it's gotten old really fast. I agree with several users...it's just a function I don't need and end up accidentally deleting lines as a result. If I could just turn it off, I'd be MUCH happier than wishing it was there since I never use it.
Whether it's a setting or even an app or add-on that can help I'd appreciate it.
As much as I love the Epic overall, and I may well be in the minority on this one, but even months into owning it the biggest thing that screws me up continually coming from my previous keyboard phone is the placement of the Fn key to begin with. If I had designed this phone, the Fn and Shift keys would be interchanged position wise with the Fn key the one in the very bottom left corner.
It happened to me with droidx multitouch kb installed

I'm still having problems with my swype dictionary not actually deleting words even after I delete them. My MAIN one is my swype will type ti instead of to and it drives me insane!
I have tried running both the new and old swype with the same result. Any ideas?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
are you deleting the word by highlighting the offending then pressing the "swype" button, or by deleting it from the user dictionary?
Whenever I delete by highlighting, then pressing the "swype" button, they stay gone.
Fyi the easiest way to highlight the word is to type it then swype from the "swype" button to the "sym" button then press "select text" then use the arrows.
If that doesn't work then I don't know what to say
Yeah I am deleting it by highlighting it and pressing the swype key.

Are you doing it from the messaging app? It didn't work for me doing it that way, I had to remove a word after highlighting it in the address bar or an email or something.

This may be a stupid question, but are you ALWAYS swyping(word?) or do you sometimes type without dragging your finger? I'm constantly deleting the same words because my thumbs like to typo when I type vs swype. I have noticed that if it's a typo, the swype dictionary loves to store it then throw it out there when you are actually using swype. It's apparently very new word hungry.

That's really weird. I guess maybe you may want to flash your phone back to stock and redo your rom. maybe something is corrupt. Other than that I'm at a loss. Sorru I couldn't be more of a help.
anyone else using swype?
try double tapping a word to edit; you can't click the words in the list due to the new feature in 2.3.3 where you double tap a word and it goes to cut/copy menu.
frustrating if you use swype, nice if you use the normal keyboard and you get a word totally wrong.
comments?
Just tried that out it is annoying but I didn't use that way to edit anyway, I put the cursor in the word I want to edit and press the swype button. Idk if this is what anyone else does but works for me.

As spoken about by the ui lead designer in his engadget interview, they want to move away from waiting (pressing and holding).
While this is indeed annoying for swype users, the change is for the good of the entire text entry experience in android.
As an alternative, tap the word you want to select, then tap the swype key to select the word to edit. It only makes things a little slower.
