I Posted this in General and got no response so i guess the Development thread is to go...
Well, We all know the Browser lags when we have flash content.
But after Applying a "Lag fix" for the browser from the Nexus S thread, It actually works.
So here what they did... And it works for my SGS and the Browsing speed has improved alot for mine.
A Good test site would be Androidcentral.com
DO NOTE I"M USING DARKY'S ROM WITH HIS VERSION 8.0 BROWSER ((WITH THE GRAPHIC "Glitch", Checkered boxes when zooming ))
In the Browser, go to
about:debug
Go to Menu > More > Settings > Debug section:
UNCHECK 'Show JavaScript console'
CHECK 'Normal rendering'
NOTE: If you clear out the browser's data from the Manage Applications menu under Android's main settings page that you access by using the MENU button on the home screen, you will have to repeat these steps to be able to see sites rendered as they are on desktops again.

All that does is change the useragent string to a desktop web browser, so websites think you're using a desktop web browser instead of a mobile one. I wouldn't really call this a fix. But hey, if it works it works.

Point 3 i did not change cause i could not find it at all... :S I posted this fix on Samsung Mobile Singapore Facebook page and i got good results from people
I use pocketnow.com (desktop version) as the benchmark. With flash content enabled of course. No browser can scroll smoothly. I've tried various kernels with lagfix or oc. But still no good
Yup, feels a wee bit faster.
Simplifying the steps:
In the Browser, go to
about:debug
Go to Menu > More > Settings > Debug section:
UNCHECK 'Show JavaScript console'
CHECK 'Normal rendering'

Try Closing the program or reboot your phone.. Cause mine loads Pocketnow very smoothly.. It like butter with Darky's 8.0 Browser.. you know the one with checkered boxs when zooming.
Tried this on Darky's ROM v8.1 and when I type about:debug and hit Go, nothing happens and there's no Debug section in the settings...

I verified your comment on pocketnow.com . Its true for stock browser (even with the improvement suggested in this thread) but I tried with xScope browser and it browses like its should- smooth and nice. Give a try and you will improve your "benchmark" experience for sure.

Or even easier: "about:useragent"
about:useragent does not remember your choice. if you close the browser you have to change your useragent again...
Works on darky's 8.1 . Should work on every fw... Thanks man ;-)
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I need to confirm this! There is definatelly some improvement !
Doc's & Stefs Kitchen v7.5
Damn, now javascript is WAY faster than before!!!
Thank you!
I don't see Debug section...
runing Doc's V7.9.5
Honestly I do not see any difference, except text reflow and some other things not working any more.
How come when i write "about:config" nothing happens? Using darkyy v8.1..
Anyone else has this problem?
Cheers
can anyone please share darkyy's browser apk over here? thanks

Hi just like title says.
Debug mode doesnt work
I installed Dolphin HD. You can find a "desktop"-mode in it's settings.
Dont want to mess my device, dont want a workaround ;-) so I'll stay at stock browser ... this one must do it somehow
what exactly is this desktop mode? Do you mean fullscreen? If so, webkit wont hide the taskbar, youll need a third party browser like dolphin or firefox.

the mode I nean is that the browser is not recognised as a mobile device but as a desktop pc, some sites redirekt you to mobile version and features are not available e.g. google calander
On my HTC, just click the menu button in the browser, then "More", then "Settings" and there you should see "Mobile view", just untick it.
Webkit will not allow you to choose user agent. Get dolphin he from the market, it does.

Mmm I don't think you know what you're talking about.
Dolphin is using Webkit, it's just the appearance that has been changed.
And you can do it with the stock browser just the way I explained it a few post above.
Oh please.
Why don't you try doing exactly as you've recommended above little buddy, starting with more, then settings, then whatever.
what he is saying is true, i have that option on my htc but not my galaxy.

Ok I may be wrong about the settings, but still, Dolphin is based on Webkit.

The Samsung stock browser does not offer the ability to change user agent. Samsung have stripped that setting from the browser (along with quite a number of other ones littered throughout the OS). Samsung's iteration and Dolphin are both based on webkit.
Use Firefox (behaves a bit randomly though, some pages display mobile view while others don't) or Dolphin HD with Desktop Toggles AddOn as a work around until we get some custom ROMs for this thing.
Like said above no setting like this in menu, not even with debug mode. Personaly I think the whole device is on every edge a bit buggy, translation faults and some senceless functions, or some wich are not thought to the next level. Like allshare, nice but not really functional no option to set more files at once in playlist, or mydocs, no option zo rename.
I also miss that function . On my N1 I can go into the menu and change so the browser does not present itself as a mobile device. On the big screen tab I would mostly like to view webpages as a real browser and not a mobile browser.
When You log on to a newspaper they all end up as mobile pages and You only get the stupid headlines and not the stuff You actually browsed to get.
Tried to download COD yesterday but could not do it as the browser went into mobile mode and presented itself as P1000 which stopped me from even trying to install it.
I search a little bit around without success, about:debug enable some features but seems there is not a chance to enable it.
Seems it happen also with Galaxy S with froyo installed, differently than HTC Desire that has the default the user agent selectable by default (I think is an HTC chose).
Anyway not just Dolphin HD allows to change it also Skyfire, but I agree that would be nice to have it on the default browser...(that seems to be faster then the Dolphin)
For me xScope 6 is the fastest (and featurewise imo the best as well) on the Tab.
With yesterdays release of Dolphin HD 4.0 we now have the finest mobile browser on the tab. All the bugs that used to tick me off are gone and fullscreen is silky smooth.
OK just got my A7 a week ago, but fairly comfortable playing with Android since I have an OG Droid running Cyanogen 7, and been using Linux for about 12 years.
Anyway the Dextermod says it has flash modified for playing Hulu, but I must be missing something. If I go straight to the Hulu website it tells me the standard "this video cannot be played on this platform" Is there an App I'm supposed to be playing the videos through, did Hulu break the hack, or did something go wonky in my modding?
Type about:debug into the web address line hit go/enter/done and then go into settings while in web and scroll all the way down to uastring change it to desktop and try hulu again.

Is this in the default browser? I can't seem to get about:debug to come up (I type it in, and it reverts to the website I was previously on)
EDIT: got it working in Dolphin, default wont' seem to give me the about:debug
It will go back to the browser and after it does you just go to setting in browser and scroll all the way down.

this doesn't work btw. I always keep my browser UI string sett to desktop, and hulu always comes back with an unsupported platform error with the "hulu-ized" flash version dexter packaged with 1.41
Just tested it again and it does work any time you shut down your tablet you have to do the about:debug again your not defaulted to desktop view of things unless you have done that. My hulu does work.

i just tested it here now with tv.com, and correct. although set to "desktop" and saved for next reboot.. it complaints and says not optimized for mobile.
Not sure i wanna flash update lolhulu does seem to work for me to test it I had to uninstall flash10.2 and dig through file foe hulu fixed apk reinstall and test. All i know is that if I power up my a7 go to browser type about:debug then go to hulu it works.
ok, here is the trick...
1. set UAString to "desktop" in browser settings when enabled with "about:debug", and when rebooting or restarting browser, you only need to activate with about:debug , otherwise the debug information is not enabled.
thats the trick.
Yup but now with 1.42 its as simple as uncheck mobile view under settings and your golden.
Hey guys I just first want to apologize if there are a string of these somewhere, I cant find a pair of shades on my head... anyway I flashed to Dexters Iconia p2-2 the other day and noticed that no matter what I do I cannot stop websites from going into the moble sites. I have reflashed the rom twice as well as used Thor's new V1 Kernel with no luck. I tried stock (Aboutebug) I tried dolphin and skyfire and set their settings to desk top with no effect. It worked fine on stock 3.01. Could someone please help me figure this out?
Humm
Weird... I'm using Dolphin on Dexter P2 and desktop site works fine..
with the stock browser open go to browser settings then select the advance tab. Then look for "viewing Mode" and change it from android to desktop then you should be good to go. I believe you also have to type WWW. for each website address you want to visit, for it to go to the desktop version of the site.
You dont have to do the whole about debug thing anymore as it is in the settings menu. It's just called viewing mode now.
dolphyn browser
Use dolphyn browser with add on for switch from mobile to desktop mode. I use this and it s great.

Some custom roms don't have that setting. I'm assuming that's his issue.

Yeah, I am thinking this is my issue. As posted before I know how to set up the options to display in desktop mode, its just not doing it.
I did the following to get the desktop version of Facebook to show instead of Mobile. All it does it changes the UA (User-Agent) string used by the browser.
In the browser address bar, type about:debug then press enter. Nothing will appear to happen.
Open the context menu and head into the browser settings. A few new options will appear, including a Debug tab below Labs.
In this tab is a an option UAString. Click this, and change it to Desktop.
Head back into the browse and it should load the desktop version of websites like Facebook, over the mobile edition.
I have been using ice cream sandwich 8 hours now and I am very impressed. I am using flexreaper and am blown away. The speed of the stock browser is kick ass. The pages flip or scrolls almost to fast and too smooth. I was not expecting this much , dam good job to all that made it happen. Now I have a kick ass tab.
Yeah, I'm running Taboonay 3.0.1 and love how smooth it is. was using it in the McDonald's at the truckstop I'm parked at for the night and the browser was super smooth (loving the little tab on the side when scrolling up and down). not using the stock launcher (am using ADW) but for the short time I did it was nearly flawless. I can't get over how quick and smooth it runs in general, if the "leak" or ROMs based on it are this smooth I can't wait for the official release (and hopefully Acer doesn't screw the pooch between now and then)

Is it laggy when you move through system settings?
For me there is no lag anywhere at first Tabooney installed here as well. After all day using the web browsers I noticed it was getting slow. I went to settings apps browser and cleared cache and it helped. the browser experience to me is like the browser cant exactly keep up with the OS it sometimes seems to be a bit shaky and text artifacts .Typical for a new release of say firefox would often do on a super fast computer. But its a very small issue for Such improved speed. Chrome browser will STOP and end at a black screen for me quite often . i would say avoid it until they give another update or 6.
I have tried some of the other roms as well and they all seem very similar. AWESOME WORK FROM THESE GUYS ON SUCH A SHORT TIME.
Yes. I agree. It's like I have new tablet, speed is amazign and stock browser is great too.
I have one question. I installed chrome for android (beta) and every websites load in "mobile version". Is there any option to get classic desktop version of website? I didn't find anything in settings
I am using Taboonay and it is working great!! ICS is going to make the A500 even that much better!!

Do the same thing again, and when you get the drop-down list, select Settings. See if the option is there.

Ok. I just checked mine, and I use Dolphin HD from the market.
On my status bar (with dolphin HD open and on a page, say Cnn, I select the settings in the taskbar, More, and select MobileView) You can toggle this between mobile and desktop by selecting it. Note that it will always say MobileView. Just press it, and Select Dolphin HD for doing the action. Page should change.
This should work for you. But you have to be on a web page.

I know how to do it in Doplhin, but I have problem with Chrome.
Now I use ICS Browser + and it's great. It's like stock browser but with some upgrades.
omg i so told you very wrong.. You are correct that setting is not there in Chrome.. ITs the new stock ics browser. OOPS.
sorry op dingy moment i guess..
It's okay .. I hope it will be available in final version
On HC i used the stock browser almost exclusively. with the user agent set to desktop. on ICS, however, this seems to be missing. I noticed this on Flexreaper and Taboonay. i don't know if this is a OS thing or a ROM thing.
i'm actually having to revert to dolphin, which i don't like using on a tab, because its currently my best way of accessing the full version of the internet, not the neutered mobile version. i find the stock browser to have a much better UI, and faster on my tablet than dolphin, but the mobile sites are really starting to get to me.
does anyone have a way to let me set the stock ICS browser back to a desktop user agent?
thanks in advance
There's a way to request desktop site in the menu on the upper right corner of the stock browser.

Have you tried ICS Browser + in the Play Store? It has the option for choosing an User Agent.
wonderful! thank you. i have a new default browser
EDIT: sadly its not compatible with Acer Print. aw well, i don't print very often anyways.
Quick ICS browser is also very good. A lot more customizable...
You can also type in the address bar "about:debug" (without quotes), go to settings -> debug -> UAString in the browser and change the user agent for the default browser. Once done making your advanced settings, type "about:debug" again and it will hide the advanced options while keeping those settings.
