SD Card Space - G2 and Desire Z General

Hi
I have a 16gb sd card.
I only have 4gb of music on it
But it says I only have 600mgbs left
How can I see what is taking up all the space on my card

Plug you phone into your computer and mount as external storge, then use your computer to look at what files are on your sd card and what size they are. There are also file explorer apps like astro, just long press a file and look at its detail, it will tell you its size.

I checked all the folders and they definately do not add up to 16gb.
Just wondering where all my memory is at

So decided to copy the entire contents of the sd card onto a folder on my desktop
When I did this it said the entire content was 4.11gb

Copy the files to a folder on your computer, then reformat the sdcard to FAT32, then transfer the files back onto the sdcard and see if that helps.

Does your phone report the SD card as 16GB? Also, do you have lots of apps installed to the SD? I don't believe these will show up when you are just copying files from the mounted SD.
Also, are you running Sense? I don't know much about this since I run CM6, but doesn't the HTC Locations program store all of its maps on the SD card (presumably also hidden)? Not sure how much space this would take up as well...

Copy the files off of the card and format it then move the files back. Make sure there aren't any unnecessary partitions or anything either.

Where did you get your SD card from? Do you know for fact (using it on other phones, etc.) that its really a 16 GB card, and not a counterfeit?
What is the phone reading the SD card total space as? My 16GB card is reading as 14.82 GB total space.

Fake 16 Gig card.

There is a thread in the Accessories section and tells how to check if the card is fake. The thread will have 16 Gig sdcard and where to get them. Sorry but I think you got a fake.

Installations on Internal SD vs External SD

When I have installed games like Sniper vs Sniper, Homerun Battle 3d and Asphalt. They all have me to download more files but they are always installed on the internal SD instead of the External SD. Is there a way to prevent this?
anyone have any ideas?
Any reason why you would NOT want them on the near 2 gigs allocated?
I want the installations to go on the External Card and they are all installing on the internal card. Maybe the thread topic is misleading....
No, just curious why 2 gigs is not enough. Especially when faster than external. Doesn't make sense...
Its the way the SDs are mounted. Sdcard/sd is the external. The app just looks for sdcard/ which is the internal.
He's taking about the internal sd not the /data apps dir.

Yes thats what im referring to. I want everything to be on the external. On other phones like the Evo, the games "extra" files are installed on the Ext SD Card.
correct me if I'm wrong. My understanding is there are 3 storage options:
1. Phone's 2GB internal memory: this is where apps are installed
2. Phone's 12GB internal memory: internal memory you can mount to PC and move files back and forth
3. External SD card slot: can use up to 32GB of microSD card here.
OP, what exactly are you looking to do? Put the apps installed on the 2GB internal ROM on the external SD card? I don't think this is doable w/o rooting, maybe 2.2 Froyo will have it.

Games like Homerun Battle 3d. When you install it, it tells you that it has to download more information to store on your SD Card. On the HTC Evo, the downloaded information stores on the external SD Card in the /com2us folder. On the Vibrant, the extra information that is downloaded stores on the internal SD card in the same folder. I would rather have all the extra info store on the EXT SD Card.

Sorry I wasn't really clear on my on my post. Most phones don't have an internal SD card, so the standard mount for the external SD card is the sdcard/ partition, so the app automatically mounts the data there. You'll have to reprogram the app to see the SGS external SD card mounting directory of sdcard/sd

Partioning 8gb SD card, and running GDX v010

Sorry, but another basic question which I've searched for the answer but can't find an answer that makes sense to me.
I have an x8 running on Gingerdx v010. Runs great.
I have just been given a 8gb Micro SD Card, Class 10.
What's the best way to go about swapping the stock sd card with this new one - do i just copy and paste all off the old sd card onto my desktop, and then copy all that back to the new sd card?
Or do I need to partition the card in any special way?
I'm a beginner at this, so please don't get too technical!
I'd like to put some music on the new card, and I reckon i've got a few GB of albums etc to put on it. also, will probably try to put as much as possible on it to make sure there's plenty of available RAM in the internal memory.
Thanks in anticipation of your help.
This is a really useful site - glad I found it.
Impster
bump... anyone?
Backup copy/move all the files in old sdcard to PC. Insert your new sdcard and boot, enter CWM>advanced option>partition sdcard>select 512mb>then zero swap. reboot. Then copy/move ur files to new sdcard You can also partition using windows You just need partition if you are installing many apps like me
Partitioning is not required, just copy data over from old card to new card.

How would I go about using a bigger memory card?

I want to upgrade to a bigger memory card, but most of my games and apps are installed to the memory card. Would I just plug in up to my computer and copy all the folders over? Or move the apps to my phone, switch cards and then move them to the new memory card?
and would I still keep all my app settings and game save files?
Just copy one card to the next it will work just the same

Yup, just done this - replaced the 8GB card that came with my handset with a 32GB one.....plugged both cards into my PC and copied all contents from 8GB to 32GB then chucked it in the phone - simples
Make sure you copy hidden folders too, and android.secure, thats the folder with apps you've moved to SD card
what about if i have sd card partition? i have 16gb and planning to upgrade to 32.. but i have 1gb partition because of link2sd, but my pc cannot detect that partition, what would i do?
Ude a position manager e.g. easeus to copy hidden partitions

storage confusion(memory)

im just a bit confused about the sd card in general,,my phone of astro file manager has like,,,phone>sdcard>externalsd...which is weird and i never know if im searching my phone or my sd card...
when i try and load things i have dragged on my pc desktop onto sdcard they ussualy then go into phone>sdcard>external sd and never just .... sd card
i was trying to load images into sketchbook mobile and i could only do so from the phones camera pictures where i now have to drag everything omn the desktop....why cant i make use of my 32gb external sd card in this regard?
where are the applications for augmenting tehe sd card memory or whatever not for just having aplication sent to sd card memory,
does the sd card just work like say,,an external usb hard drive for a computer except you can put some inatalled application on it,,,,,but nothing like media,,photos videos etc?
or is it just me?
cheers
Your phone aka tab is divided into parts
System arnd 2 gigs
SDCARD arnd 14 gigs
System works as space for system
Sd as your sd card - Flashing doesn't destroy data on this
And if you place another SD card then it is termed as external_sd
So primary storage for you phone is SD Which is its own space
PS : there is usb storage folder (in sd card directory) also which is for your pendrives, etc

there are a lot more partitions than the 2 you mentioned!
efs
system (~1GB)
data (~2GB)
hidden
...
as far as i remember the note has 8 or 9 partitions (all of them have to be
subtracted from the initial 16gig (unformated!! formated it will be significantly less) storage!
so from your 16gigs you should see around 11GB as free mem on '"sdcard"!
i can't tell exactly because i have the 32gb internal version. with it a little more than 25,5GB are shown as "total" available (not free) storage!
as mentioned above
the rom has 1gb partition
data/system has 2gb
rest is used for sd card purposes around about 11.8gb
the device sees the internal memory as sd memory, the external sd card is seen under /external_sd
the file mangers will automatically go directly to the internal storage when browsing
i understand that I get about 12 GB left from 16 internally but.....
what can I actually do with the external_sd?
I cant load jpeggs onto sketchbook mobile at the moment. Reaally annoying
Any reason as to why it wouldn't recognize files in the external_sd?
Also we were saying about partitins and other random folder in the phone SD and external sd? anyone got a referrl to which ones can be deleted and generally how to make the phone and external sd card more navigation friendly?
please this would be really helpful
external_sd is your physical micro sd card, you can do what you want with it, i personally have all my music and movies on there
what files are you putting on the card?

[Q] micro sd partially mounted

Hi guys, i got a problem mounting the microsd on my hd2.
I've seen that the problem is in every rom.
Well.. every android rom tested seem to no recognize the sd... only a Gb of internal storage is founded... but if i open a file manager i can see the sd folder and navigate inside it...
I got an hd2 with android on sd and wp7 nand... and i already tested doing privilege fix... but nothing change.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
You have WP7, which uses part of your SD card as internal storage. Mount it on a computer and use a partition tool. Do you see the rest of the SD card?

OK not to cause confusion here but I think both of the above are slightly wrong. The reason you get 1GB of 'internal' storage on SD ROMs in general is because it uses a file called a data.img which is read by Android as internal storage. You will be able to use a file manager to access the SD card and you'll see all of the music etc which is on your SD card but if you try moving an app to your SD it won't work anymore.
However, I haven't used SD Android in a long time so perhaps wis or hengsheng are right
^He is correct. Internal storage is data.img, and it's usually set to 1GB of size. Your SD card has nothing to do with your internal storage when talking about SD-Android. However, I think you can download another one with a larger size, or just set it to a larger size in the boot up script.
(Either way, make a backup, because I don't think you can "enlarge" a data.img neither can you migrate apps/data from one to another.)
