[Q] Gorilla Glass?

Anyone know how scratch resistant the Epic's screen will be?
If its weak, I'd like to manually try and replace it with Gorilla Glass.

Manually replacing the glass sounds kind of risky!

You should realize that gorilla glass and products like it are much more brittle than standard glasses. While it can with stand scratches, it doesn't favor well in drops and impacts to it. Why not just use an invisible shield or other protector? Much cheaper and easier.

Trying to replace a screen that's made for the phone with a screen that's NOT made for the phone isnt gonna be easy or pretty.
when it comes to a drop/impact that would shatter or splinter the screen, it either will or won't. Having a case and protector on the screen helps. But if its from more than 2 feet, most likely the screen will shatter regardless of the type of glass.

My Hero has survived far more of its fair share of 5 foot falls onto asphalt with only minimal scuffing to the plastic case, there are no screen cracks, and no screen scratches either. If the Epic 4G is anything similar, it should be fine with both. Although I would like to note that, at least for me I would worry more about problems with the keyboard after the phone has been dropped, as was the case with my Touch Pro. Just my 1.9 cents.

One of the benefits of super amoled is that the screen is attached to the plastic/glass cover. It eliminated the dust and glare problems but it would most likely be impossible to replace it.

One of the great things about the HTC "chin" phones is that it's impossible to directly impact the screen on a flat surface like a floor or sidewalk without completely breaking the phone open. That's how it is on my G1, at least. Say what you will about the aesthetics, but I find that to be fantastic practical design.

When I went to the T-Mobile store to see their version, they intentionally dropped it and banged the screen HARD like 5 times to demonstrate how tough it was. Not a scratch. I wouldn't worry about screen durability.

Not gonna happen...they sell the display phone they drop to the customer ..lol jk....
Overall though I had plenty of LCD phones and I dropped them..threw them from room to room and never had any damage...I remember at one point I dropped my phone every day for like 6 months..but then again maybe I'm one of the lucky ppl :/

What's with all the gorilla glass stuff lately? As previously said gorilla glass isn't suitable for the Epic 4G because of the Super Amoled display, on top of this Gorilla glass is very scratch proof but at the sametime it's not meant to be dropped.

My Epic fell out of my pocket screen first onto a rock when I was getting out of my car a few days ago and didn't have a scratch/crack or anything on it.
The silicon case, however, got chipped.

As long as he did, I wanna say I'm pissed at how easily my Epic screen scratched. Weak.

Gorilla glass- good stuff?

So, any thoughts about gorilla glass? Today my 2week old dvp shattered. Yes, I dropped it. But, I've dropped phones before with no damage .
I ordered s new one while I fight to get a replacement. Low expectations on that. However I'm thinking my expectations on gorilla glass may have been too high.
Anyone with s more correct expectation level willing to reset mine?

technically your gorilla glass didnt shatter you had a bad drop and the glass layer under the gorrila broke. trust me ive taken a hammer to the top layer and nothing. if you drop the phone with the screen facing down then your ok. but drop it on the sides or the back and you can get the layers under the gorilla to break

no, it shattered. Top, bottom, and every layer in between. I cut myself on the pieces falling off. I do have a pic I'll share later. I thought it landed face down...loohed like it. But the break pattern indicated more towards the edge. Funny thing though, I was also holding my hd2 at the same time..both dropped togethr. One on top of the other. Both broke, indicating the drop was similar to what you day.
The Dell shattered completely, inner and putter layers. Only a tiny part of the screen is alive. The hd2 has cracks, but is usable.

oh wow can you seperate the gorilla glass from the phone. i mean youll most likely get a replacement mines is coming today the shipped it overnight my battery exploded lol backcover melted its not nice

I dropped the phone glass first on a pavement, it had a screen protector. Though the screen didn't break nor are there any scratches but it did get a pin point dent on the glass
I guess if they are not sure about the amount of RAM they put in this phone who is to say if this is a real gorilla glass.
Just curious, the hammer thing you did, was it on a DVP?

I read an article somewhere that said that gorilla glass is only strongest when it is at the center and it is not as good at the edges.

I've seen all Gorilla Glass demo's done hitting it in the middle. I've seen just about every single break happen because of edge damage.
This should be addressed IMO.

My DVP has scratches all over the screen...Scratch resistent my butt..

personally i got one scratch from keeping it in my pocket and several scratches from this one time where i dropped it
and engadget had several scratches on the venue
so some people get lucky and some dont as far as gorrilla glass goes

I had the displeasure of owning the DVP and thought the glass was atrocious. The curved design made it hard to scroll smoothly. And godforbid you try and wipe away smudge prints and dirt - this was a task in itself. However, I dropped it face first from 1 and half feet and not one scratch.

I abuse my phones and the best to take my abuse was my Dash 3G. The DVP is comparable. Only 2 light scratches and i got my phone a week before christmas and did i mention i abuse my phones. They are kept in my pocket with keys and such. Even the chrome trim has held up nice. As for the curved glass i like it.. Very tactile, and easy to use. maybe its my big hands but I like it, even the keys are spaced well and robust. Again, i have huge hands and the on screen keyboard doesnt work for me, but the portrait works well.

I've dropped mine a few times, not a scratch. Just yesterday, my car holster decided to let go of the dashboard, causing the DVP (with a little extra weight attached) to faceplant into my shifter pretty hard. No problems there either.

I cannot find any replacement parts, I cannot find any repair shops for it... should I sell it as is, or call dell? IDK what to do... it still works fine just has a very ugly screen

if you go to the Dell community site, they will tell you there is nothing they will do. I have a new one, paid for out of my pocket.

dell charged me 249.99 to send me a replacement device...
a cracked screen is considered out of warranty (I think it also includes any physical damage as well...not sure about that part though)

Well no one ever said Gorilla Glass wasn't glass... It is tougher than normal glass against scratches, but it isn't scratch proof nor is it shatter proof.
Remember it is still glass and that means it will break under the right conditions.

yes.. yes it does. took the screen cover off my phone. for a few weeks now. so scratched. although my sisters mt4g has one scratch on it.. but who knows what its from.
and another friend has a mt3g and has no scratches.. its what gave me the confidence to take my screen protector off.

Feel a vibrant/galaxy s screen and feel ours and tell me that we have gorilla glass. If we really truly do, then we got the crap **** version of it.

Everyphone has it. But I'm sure some grains of minerals found in sand can scratch the screen.. maybe he found a really small diamond and that one grain scratched his screen.

the gorilla glass they use for sunrooms and stuff can be hit with a hammer and not break. my sisters boyfriend threw his g2 and shattered his screen and my sister dropped hers and now theres a crack going across the screen about 2/3 of the way down. i never got around to buying any screen protectors for mine but there are only one or two very minor scratches on the screen itself. i was hoping gorilla glass would mean the screen would be a lot harder to break, but apparently thats not the case.

How do you know every phone (I assume you mean "every G2") has Gorilla Glass? Just because Corning lists the G2 on their website as having GG does not guarantee that every G2 has it. HTC is free to switch materials whenever they want. In fact, they probably reserve the right to change whatever specs of the phone they want, without notice (if they even listed GG in the specs, which they do not). But you are probably right in that many high-end smartphones are using GG these days, so HTC is pretty likely to stick with it for all the G2's.
If you read the older Gorilla Glass thread I posted above, you will see there are other users that scratched the screen with normal use. GG is advertised as being "highly damage resistant", and its harder to scratch than "conventional" glass, but you can still scratch it.

I believe that GG was originally developed for helicopter windshields. But the thickness of those and the other uses (like you mentioned) are probably a lot thicker than the type used for smartphones. The GG surface treatment greatly increases the toughness of the glass, but its thickness will still be a factor. There were reports of iPhone 4 GG breaking the first week the phone was released, just from being dropped. While GG is pretty impressive, you can't take for granted its not going to break.

Yeah that's true. I've been pretty lucky so far with phone screens so far. And I probably shouldn't have said/typed that.

I think your post is a good one to have on here. Its good to know that some people have scratched or cracked the screen under fairly normal usage (well, maybe not the sisters BF throwing it!). Some people seem to think Gorilla Glass is indestructible.

It say's desire has gorilla glass, and I some how managed to get a deep scratch on the it which went through the lcd display.....It might vary with htc devices

guess what happens when you drop your S2 face down on a gravel road

I dropped my GS2 on a gravel road from about chest high, glass side down. I picked it up and the screen was completely dusty and horrible looking and I said UhOh. I got a microfiber cloth and wiped off the phone after blowing as much as possible of the screen. Got it all wiped off, and in direct sunlight at every angle, not a single scratch, blemish, pit, nothing lol. I have a slim gel on the phone, but the screen is naked. Whew!

It's called Gorilla Glass for a reason - gorillas are well known for their high resistance to being dropped by humans onto gravel.

Yeah I decided to forego the cases and the screen protectors after seeing some videos (not produced by screen protector sellers).
I was using Reallook but it got to slimy and even carrying the phone in my pocket with keys, only the plastic edges gets a little nicked. My Captivate's screen never had a scratch and I am the most un anal person when it comes to worrying about scratches on the body of the handset. Under everyday conditions the glass really is scratch resistant and I would say scratch proof in a pocket with keys.

I've seen reports of screens cracked, so i wouldn't jump for joy just cause someone got lucky and his screen is still intact after dropping the phone. Also reports of scratches on the screen. So i advice people not to start playing football with their SII after reading this thread

Gorilla glass is good stuff......The "screen protector" makers are so scared of it they are posting questionable videos on YouTube of how "easy" it is to scratch. "fear" is a great advertising tactic and sells a lot of things. In fact the glass is amazingly resistant to scratching.
I would be more worried about the interior circuitry shock on a drop than the glass.

As long as HTC is in business, the screen protector people will be too. You can look at an HTC screen wrong and scratch it.

You are very lucky. Its a different story if you drop it in the sea or fall in with it in your pocket
Put it this way I've got a very expensive piece of gorilla glass for a coaster. Ohh and a spare battery that I'm too scared to use :-(
I must admit I got a zagg invisishield screen protector and it is awful. Wonder why they bothered ohh try money.

The LCD screen under the glass was cracked into 20 different pieces. But the glass itself - not even a single scratch. You had to hold at it an angle to see the broken lcd pieces. So while the gorilla glass is strong, the screen inside itself is pretty flaky, so dont be droppin it!

Yeah Thats what I am talking about....The glass is like Pyrex...maybe even stronger. The interior parts are the issue with drops. That's where those thick soft silicone cases help out but I don't care for cases as the ones that could really protect the phone make it too bulky and the thin cases are a waste and only prevent scratches and nicks around the edges. I don;t worry about those. Never used the same phone for more than a couple years if that long. The back cover can be folded in half and if ever needed replaced easily.

That's nonsense, they scratch just as easily as the sgs2, I will let you decide how easily that is since most htc devices also use gorilla glass

My S3 does NOT have gorilla glass

ok guys i really need some advice, i have had my phone for 4 days i have been very careful with it waiting for my otterbox case to be sent out. i have not dropped it one time and it has about 6 small scratches on it in which 1 is deep enough to actually feel with my finger nail. i dont keep it near my keys at all and it kept in my side pocket with nothing else touching it. please help

If you have a Ghost Armor kiosk by you, i would get their screen protector. I had hairline scratches on my One X, and the Ghost Armor fills in the scratches when they put it on. That should mask it for you.

Maybe you have a ghost that prefers HTC. Yup, like he said, get some ghost armor.

Phone has gorilla glass, you came into contact with something to scratch it...even old school screens weren't THAT easy to scratch.
sucks, but be more careful and maybe get a screen protector before making wild accusations.

Scratch resistant does not mean scratch PROOF. Sand will reek havoc on glass screens, gorilla glass included.

Scratch resistant is not scratch proof. Drag anything harder than it across and it will scratch.

its been in my pocket all day..... i dont even live near sand hahaha. i mean should i demand a new one? or just enjoy the scratch for the next 2 years.....

So you're saying out of the millions of devices produced, you got the ONE device without gorilla glass? I'd say it's much more likely it came into contact with sand or something similar.
And no, scratch resistant doesn't mean it can't be scratched. It means it's resistant to scratches, not impervious.

Sometimes it can be faulty. My Asus Transformer Prime had faulty gorilla glass, even the cleaning cloth that came with it caused scratches. Took it to Best Buy and the CSR who was trying to teach me to use a cleaning cloth scratched the screen. Got it rma'd and not a single scratch after 5 months. Worth the effort to see if you can get it replaced.

Awesome, so i just got off the phone with samsung and they said they havent had any known issues about this but they have had faulty gorilla glass in the past. She wanted me to send the phone in they would replace it. but i really dont want to not have a phone for 10 business days. im going to contact best buy and see what they can do for me

I carry my phone in my pocket. I've carried it in my pocket wrapped in a microfiber towel since I got in last Friday. My wife laughed at me as she knows how I am with my electronics. Luckily, my SGP screen protectors showed up today. I got it installed and am glad I was able to make it without any scratches. I know, sick dude.

I'm in the same boat as you. The first day I got my phone I got a scratch about an inch long and I wasn't carrying it around with me or anything cause I didn't activate it. I wanted to get a screen saver before I got it activated. So as soon as sprint gets some in stock I'm gonna take it in and see what they can do for me.

I never used a screen protector with my infuse , I would shove tools in the same pocket , screw drivers , pliers etc... not a single scratch. Though the infuse had gg1. I won't be as careless with my sgs 3 for a while though.

If you carry a phone in your pocket without protection, you're asking for trouble. You might go a long period of time with no problems, but all it takes is for one day, you have a grain of sand in your pocket and voila...a scratch.

Must have failed Earth Science class/science class as well.
If a object is harder it won't be scratched by a softer object EVER.. But silca in sand is harder then the glass and will scratch it.
