[Q] Possible brick? - Fascinate General

I installed punk.kaos V4 kernel and my phone went through the process just fine and then when it booted back up it went to the lockscreen but i am unable to unlock the phone. It just doesn't register my touch. I can turn the screen on with the power button, but not off again. Help!

I am no expert but did you flash his rom too or just the kernel?
If so you can flash your old kernel as long as it was voodoo.
Don't worry you didn't brick it. I have done much worse.
Sent from my 1.2ghz vd5 dl09 fascinate through xda app.

Just the kernel. I am pretty new at this and definitely haven't messed around with voodoo up until this point because i haven't felt the need. I'm on DJ05 with SuperClean 0.9 and was on stupidfast 1.54 kernel (non-voodoo) up until i just attempted to install kaos' kernel.

If it were me i would put another voodoo kernel on your sd card and flash it in recovery. I like otb, blazed, or jt's. Just download the one you want and flash through recovery.
Out of curiosity. When your phone was booting did the voice come on and talk about converting your phone?
I have not used kaos' kernel yet but since its voodoo i assume you would hear the voice.
Sent from my 1.2ghz vd5 dl09 fascinate through xda app.

The woman's voice was talking away through the whole install.
I did a battery pull and booted into clockwork and tried to restore a backup, but i guess that didn't restore my non-voodoo kernel. Bummer. Still no touch response.
I will try your suggestion. FYI: When i boot into clockwork, i get this message: "E:Can't mount /dev/block/stl11
(Invalid argument)"
#MANUAL MODE#
Then it repeats the can't mount stuff again twice. I have to apply update.zip to get into clockwork.
Can i mount my sdcard from clockwork?

So are you trying to get into cwm by holding volume up and down then hitting power?
If so what color was it?
Sent from my 1.2ghz vd5 dl09 fascinate through xda app.

Yeah i am doing the volume up/down and power to get into clockwork. And normally that would work fine and i would be straight into clockwork. But this time it's coming up with that error message that i described above.
I am in green clockwork now only because i applied update.zip from the blue recovery menu. So somewhere in there an error is occurring.

The error your getting is above my pay grade.
I think you can mount from cwm through one of the options that eludes me right now. Worst case you could always put your card in your computer and paste it on your card that way and use cwm to flash the kernel.

Well hey thank you very much for responding. I'm glad i can at least move about in recovery. That makes me feel like all is not lost. Thanks again.

Just checked. Its in mounts and storage.
I havemt used it but it looks like mount usb might do it.

All is definitely not lost. I may not be the most help but others on here can get you through almost anything you do.
Believe me i have gotten a lot of help on here.
Hopefully i can get you fixed up though.
Sent from my 1.2ghz vd5 dl09 fascinate through xda app.

So i have tried the "mount USB storage" option in cwm, but i can't see the drive on the computer (a Mac, in case it matters).
Also, back in the mounts and storage menu, i am unable to unmount /sdcard (fourth option) and i am unable to mount /sd-ext (fifth option). All of the others (/system, /data, and /cache) i am able to mount and unmount. I have all three mounted at the moment.

I do not want to give you bad advice and keep in mind i am just a geek who loves to flash stuff on my phone but i would pull the battery, pull the sd card, then paste a kernel on it from my computers sd slot. Then put it back in the phone, enter cwm and flash it.
Just make sure its a voodoo kernel.
Sent from my 1.2ghz vd5 dl09 fascinate through xda app.

That is a good idea except i don't have an SD card converter thing to put my micro sd one in my computer.

Let me try something with mine.
Sent from my 1.2ghz vd5 dl09 fascinate through xda app.

You didnt brick it. It might take you a while but check thru the forums. Chances are someones already done it. Ive done much worse then that and got thru it
Using dl09 with stupid fast, blackish storm, and every mod I like.

Ok. When i mount usb mass storage it shows on my computer. When you did that did you back out of it or did you leave it there? It says if you return it unmounts.
Sent from my 1.2ghz vd5 dl09 fascinate through xda app.

I leave it in the menu that says, "USB Mass Storage device. Leaving this menu unmount your SD card from your PC"
So my computer should in theory be able to see it, but it cant.

I am not sure what to do right now.
If i knew adb commands i would tell to how to use that to get the new kernel on there.
You could google how to use adb and you should be able to push the file to the card so you can flash it.
Or read through these forums as mentioned above. That's how i get myself outta trouble.
Lots of info here. You just have to read it.
Good luck. And you will get your phone working just fine.
Sent from my 1.2ghz vd5 dl09 fascinate through xda app.

Oh! Good idea. I didn't even think about ADB. Yeah i'll give that a shot. Again, thank you very much for your time and help. Very much appreciated.

Voo Doo 5 question please help

I hope this isnt already in here somewhere. I am on xda app and search seems to search every single forum on xda. I didnt see this addressed while looking so sorry if this is elsewhere. But here goes...
Ok so last night I used odin and did my modem.
Next I flashed clean rom in cwm.
At this point all was fine. I did forget to wipe first but phone booted fine and all seemed well.
Next I tried to power down and volume down into cwm but it said, in red, couldnt verify or something and sent me back to stock recovery.
So I rebooted and used rom manager to reboot into recovery where I flashed jt's 1128 test kernel.
During reboot the voice came on and started with "this make take a few minutes" "step one", pause "step two" then a long pause and it repeated "step one" "step two". It never said success but after repeating the two steps it booted up.
The first time I installed voodoo it started with something about converting data partition or something and of course ended with conversion successful.
So now my phone runs fine. But my quadrant score is right at 900.
Am I running voo doo 5 or not?
I am guessing not and would like to know what to do now.
Help please.
Fascinate oc1.2 for now
Everything sounds good but the score its way to low so imo I'm saying no it didn't take..

Have you checked the voodoo folder on your sd card and verified the disable_lagfix file isnt still there from a previous voodoo removal?

good day. From the Fascinate sporting the XDA app.
It sounds like you didnt flash clockwork mod recovery from rom mang. I got the same failer notice when I deleted the update.zip off my sd card. I just flashed it from rom mang. And all was fine. Hope this helps.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Ok so I did flash recovery from rom manager with no change. I still could only get into recovery only from rom manager. Using stock recovery then the update didnt work.
Next I replaced update zip with the original file from when I rooted and it immediatley would load fine.(it was also red)
I tried selecting jt's 1128 test kernel again and it did the same exact thing..."this may take a few minutes"..."step one"..."step two"..."this may take afew minutes"..."step one"..."step two" then it booted up.
Same as yesterday
There is no disable file in voodoo folder so what the heck is going on?
Also when I flash jt's 1126 kernel it just boots. No voice at all.
Argh
Fascinate hopefully with voodoo 5 soon
I would try, disable lagfix, reboot, flash non voodoo kernal, reboot, remove all voodoo stuff on sd card, remove update.zip, install rom mang, flash clockwork recovery, and if all is well, then do the voodoo flash.im not sure about the dj05 tho. So this is all up to you.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
You're doing it wrong. Make sure that there isn't a disable_lagfix file. Do an Odin restore back to DH12 system kernel recovery the whole thing. Leave the DJ05 radio. Root the phone and install cwm. Them look in the fascinate dev forum on removing voodoo completely. Do that. Once that is done reinstall clean DJ05 through cwm and then install jt's latest voodoo 5 kernel. It'll run through step one and step 2 twice. And recovery will be red that's the fixed recovery that has voodoo options so you don't need the disable_lagfix file and it has working nandroid backup and restore.

Would the modem.tar i used to get to where i am now be the dj05 radio?

this thread helped me a lot. i was pissed after going thru all the install stuff and whatnot from irc, and then it was slower.
but i forgot that i had the disable_lagfix file still in place. deleted that and booyah. fast little phone.
glad i read this thread.
Thanks for this info it took my quadrant from 1100 to the upper 1700s. Phone is super fast and responsive now, simply incredible.

Update:
So here is what i did. I went into cwm and disabled voodoo and conversion even though i don't think i was running voodoo.
Next i removed all voodoo files on the root of my sd card.
Then i flashed a geeknik kernel (love his kernels)
And finally i rebooted into cwm and flashed jt's 1128 test kernel and all is well with the world. I am now running quadrants in the 1700 range and my phone feels nice and snappy.
Woo hoo.
Thanks for the help

Locked up my Fascinate--please help

I'm a relative newbie and not very tech-oriented, and I appear to have screwed up big time. I'd appreciate any help that can be offered. To cut to the chase, when I attempt to boot up my Fascinate, it gets stuck indefinitely on the Samsung logo.
Here's what I did to screw it up. I rooted my phone when I first got it last year and did a lagfix. It unrooted with the update to JD05. Yesterday I attempted to root it again using two different 1-click methods, neither of which worked. I then followed the instructions in the "Modified CWMrecovery for Odin" thread, not having it work until finally succeeding in getting root using CWM Red. The phone rebooted and was rooted, and everything seemed fine, so I used Rom Manager to Boot to Recovery. This did something strange--it took 15 minutes to get to the recovery screen, with a digital voice periodically telling me how much longer it would take. When I got to the recovery screen the first thing I did was to perform a backup. I think this effort to be safe did me in, because the phone must have already been screwed up then and I think I backed up the screw-up.
I then attempted to reboot and since then all efforts get me stuck on the Samsung logo. I've tried almost all options from the Recovery screen: reboot system now, apply sdcard update.zip, wipe date/factory reset, wipe cache partition, install zip from ascard, and restore. All bring the same locked up phone.
I'd appreciate any ideas to bring my Fascinate back to life!
First off the only way to get to red CWM is to install a voodoo 5 kernel. I'm thinking the voodoo kernel and the one click lag fix don't play well together. I'm sure someone else will step in with more info however I would start by looking for a thred called how to completely remove voodoo. Then try odin to restore. Good luck.
Edit. I read your post again and not sure if u did one click lag fix or just an older voodoo kernel. Either way same result u have to disable voodoo 4 and one click to install voodoo 5. Odin it. The voice u hear was the voodoo kernel converting your system to ext4 if this was the first time you've heard this I think your first lag fix may have been the one click.

Yes this happed to me too. If i take it to the Verizon store will they know my phone is rooted and moded? i need help ASAP
Search the forums on how to properly removed the voodoo lag fix. Then you need to reflash dj05. Voodoo doesn't really do much except for show you a higher quadrant score and limit to what roms/themes you can install. Same thing happened to me. Just do a quick search, I think its in the development section. The easiest way to remove it is with and. Hope this is somewhat helpful.
so fresh and so superclean.
Don't bring it to verizon because you would be defrauding them for your mistake. see if you can access your sd card through the computer and put either a file or folder in the voodoo folder called disable_lagfix and try booting again. If that doesn't help (it is probably too late for that) then you need to flash back to stock through odin. find the thread in development on how to do that. Good luck. Your phone is not broken. Breathe.
Sent from my sch-i500 using dl09 supah clean
Here is the ODIN back to stock if you don't want to bother with removing Voodoo. That should fix your phone with or without Voodoo. It's always worked for me.
THANKS SO MUCH its back to normal i cant thank you enough
Many thanks for all of the help.

[solved] need help recovering epic 4g after trying to install a ROM

Sadly, I have goofed up my phone right out of the gate. I do not think it is bricked, but I'm unsure how to proceed and more than a little spooked by how quickly things went from great to non-functioning.
I took my stock Epic 4G and followed a tutorial to install Froyo. That went without a hitch. I then used noobnl's one-click script method to root the phone, and that also seemed to work well.
Then I tried to install the Nebula ROM with DK28 modem and pit, using Odin3 v1.61. Since then, my phone will not boot past the Samsung logo. I can still get into Clockwork, but repeating the ROM installation process has not made any difference. I then noticed that I'm running Clockwork Mod Recovery v2.5.1.0, when Nebula apparently requires v2.5.1.5 or newer.
So can anybody help me fix what I've broken? I've tried searching the forum for this problem, but have not been able to find anyone with my particular form of stupid.
Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Odin back to this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794138 then root using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388 then install this if you want cw3 and ext4 if not skip it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897612 but check on the rom ur flashing because most rom are now using ext4 and cw3. Also if you want and ur rom has the option for no journaling flash this before flashing a rom http://code.google.com/p/bonsai/downloads/detail?name=ext4-format_nojournal-1.1.3.zip&can=2&q= . I know Bonsai and Midnight roms have the option for it. Well best of luck to you and if you have any question or concerns please post them here and ill or one the many helpfull people here at xda will assist you.
Thanks, asj2583, for the quick response. For whatever reason, it did not occur to me to try putting the phone in download mode!
So to get the phone back on-track, I:
1. Started Odin3 v1.61
2. Removed the SD card from the phone
3. Plugged the Samsung USB cable from the phone to the computer (which is running 32-bit Windows Vista)
4. Clicked on 'PDA' in Odin3, then selected the Froyo TAR that had worked before, then I clicked on 'START.'
5. Let Odin3 do its thing, and now my phone is back up and running unrooted Froyo.
Moving forward, I:
1. went here and downloaded One Click Root 2.5.5.
2. On the phone, went into Menu/Settings/Applications and enabled 'Unknown sources,' then unplugged the USB cable and clicked on /Development to enable USB debugging and Stay Awake.
3. I plugged the USB cable back into the phone and ran the 'run.bat' file I extracted from the One Click Root 2.5.5 download. In short order my phone rebooted into rooted Froyo. (confirmed by going into Applications and seeing that 'Superuser' is installed)
Now it's time to set up CW3 and ext4:
1. I went here and downloaded a different One Click Root (anyone know if I could have used this instead of 2.5.5?).
2. Again, with USB debugging enabled and the USB cable plugged in, I clicked on 'run.bat' extracted from the One Click Root CWM3 download. After a brief wait, the phone rebooted. Theoretically, at this point I have Clockwork Mod 3.0.0.5 and my phone can handle ext4 filing. (Speaking of ext4, I thought that was intended for handling LARGE files on teranyte-plus HDDs. How is it the right choice for a smartphone?)
And to try a new ROM:
1. I went here and downloaded CyanogenMod 6.2 prebeta 14 and saved it to the root directory of my phone's SD card.
2. Powered down the phone, and reinserted the SD card.
3. Powered up into ClockworkMod Recovery. The screen showed that it was running v3.0.0.5. ClockworkMod automatically checked for ext4 but failed to mount. ClockworkMod suspected my files are still in rfs (admittedly, I never reformatted my SD card to ext4). ClockworkMod created a backup named 'before-ext4-convert-1296478915' in case I need to restore. At this point, I found myself in ClockworkMod's menu.
4. In ClockworkMod, I ,ped data/factory reset 3 times, cache partition 3 times and, under /Advanced, wiped Dalvik cache 3 times. I then went back to install zip from SD card and chose the CyanoGen Mod I wanted to try, but it failed. ClockworkMod noted that Amend scripting (update-script) is no longer supported and that I need to switch to Edify scripting (updater-script and update-binary) to create working update zip packages. So I went back to my SD card and told ClockworkMod to install gapps-hdpi-20101218-EPICv1.0.3.zip, which completed without error. Then I told ClockworkMod to install NebulaMod. The phone rebooted and all seems well.
Thanks! I sure was stuck last night, and just needed a nudge in the right direction.
Whoah. Whatever you do, don't follow my advice. This just bricked the phone. It will not even power up any more. Damn.
Correction. Not bricked. Just really, really scary. Thanks to Koadic I'm back at unrooted Froyo. I think maybe I'll stay here for a while.

Ext4 wasn't intended solely for handling large files. It made some changed to ext3 that allows handling of larger files and also increases the subdirectory limit, which makes it suitable large files or large disks. Ext4 also added journaling. These are not the reasons we use ext4 on our phones. I think all of our ext4 roms mount the disks with the noatime flag, and many people are running the no-journal mod. This makes ext4 act more like ext2 with the ability to allocate extents instead of individual block.
"Amend scripting (update-script) is no longer supported and that I need to switch to Edify scripting (updater-script and update-binary) to create working update zip packages."
My phone also says this when I try to install the Truly-Epic rom. I'm on DK28 like the rom says to be on, and on CWM3 and EXT4...yet...it doesn't want to install. Anyone know what for or what might be any problems?
how long did it take for your phone to power up after rooting with ext4 and cwm3? mine has been at it for a while now. i flashed back to stock dk28 using odin and did the process over and it gets stuck backing up my information and just keeps creating before ext4 back ups til my memory is gone

New to epic =)

hello just got my new epic 4g about 3 hours ago i just came from the samsung mesmerize and before that i was on captivate so far i am loving the epic (because of the keyboard) well i was looking at roms and things seem really different compared to the mesmerize... the rom i was looking at was the Frankenstein FROYO rom and i am looking forward to pick up and test out that rom but the thing is i am a little confuse on some of the things it wants me to do like the whole DK28 modem thing and the convert to ext4 system..... what is this stuff about? and also the whole No Journaling thing? so far i am rooted and thats about it on my phone where should i start lol
Welcome! I also use Frankenstein ROM.
Ok. The dk28 is our froyo leak that we have. If you go into settings and about phone and look at the baseband version that tells you your modem version. If you update to dk28 then the baseband version should say dk28. If you update to dk28 using Odin to flash the rom it will automatically update your modem. The ext4 thing is changing our filesystem from stock Rfs to ext4 which is a lot faster. When you update to dk28 use the one click root with clockwork mod version 3 and once finished boot into cwm by using power down, camera and power button and the cwm3 will automatically convert your filesystem to ext4. The no journaling mod speeds up the phone by about 15%. Having journaling is enabled to protect your data. If you bare in the middle of something and your battery dies it is there to protect it. Now when you disable it you just gave to be careful to Jake sure your battery doesn't die while your doing something cause it could corrupt your data. I've been using it for almost a month and I haven't gad any trouble. Good luck. Anymore questions just ask.

Musclehead hit everything spot on, though I'm not sure exactly how much no journaling speeds up your processing capability. I'm on Viperrom Frozen, which uses EXT4 and flashes through CWM3. I think it's terrific. Tried Bonsai but it was too stock for my taste. It's a barebones, clean deal with Bonsai. I go more for the theme and baked in stuff personally.
so im a little lost here i am following this guide to upgrade to 2.2 http://briefmobile.com/how-to-update-sprint-epic-4g-to-android-2-2?cp=5

If you run CWM3/Ext4 on your 2.1 install it will bork and get stuck on the Samsung screen. CWM3/Ext4 only works with DK28.
I don't know if you could apply a zip via CWM3 (while installed on 2.1) or not, I would wager you couldn't... but since the DK28 update should apply all the changes as you would by flashing I'm not sure.
The proper process is DK28, then CWM3/Ext4, then rom.
If your DK28 tar file is giving an error in Odin before you even try to apply it, download it again and retry; something got messed up in your download most likely.
ok got my phone to go back to stock 2.1 with the odin way soo gonna try and download the dk28 file again and see where that takes me

Yeah give that a go if the new file checks OK, odin it to get to 2.2 (or you could download the update.zip if it is still floating around out there and install it via the samsung recovery). Boot it up and get your gmail configured etc, then go to debugging mode and run CW3 again.
Reboot into CWM3 and let it finish, then it should boot right up to the phone again. The pick a rom (if you want one) and apply it in CWM3. Just make sure the rom is compatible with ext4 and CWM3. Some are compatible with neither, some with ext4 but not CWM3. It usually says in the thread title which it is.
ok redownloaded it and installed my settings says i have 2.2 and the baseband says DK28 and did the CWM3/ext4 and now im stuck at the same samsung screen again

After you ran the CWM3 batch file, did you reboot into CWM3 to let it finish the installation (down volume, camera, power button at same time to turn the phone on)?
If yes, did it complete without errors?
this is what i am doing right after i installed the DK28 file i started my phone and used the oneclickCWM3 root it went thru fine and started up fine so i reset it and did the whole cam, power, volume down stuff and then it went into CWM and was updating my file system to EXt4 and then after it said complete it restarted and then just hangs in the samsung logo
At the CWM3 menu, you have to install a ROM from zip file.
ok everything is good just need to know if my undervolt took in dont know how i find out about that
So you got past the cwm3 conversion? Yeah you needed to flash a rom or it would get stuck. What undervolt mod are you talking about? What rom did you flash?

need help, several subjects lol

ok. first off.
I just switched from dj05 voodoo with a sc rom, to sc2.3 voodoo eb01.
I made a back up in rom manager of dj05, and a tibu back up, but tibu, for some reason, didn't save to my sd. so I tried to go back to the dj05 back up, but it wouldn't boot. just got stuck on the samsung screen.
so I pushed dj05 back, tried to restore the back up, and still got stuck on the samsung screen. any ideas how to get this back?
ok. next. on sc2.3 eb01, I had neongt theme, decided I wanted revolution, so I downloaded revolution. put on sd, flashed, and boot looped. flashed neon gt again, it booted, and now I have both themes. dialer/menus from revolution, drop down from neon, etc. how would I go about getting just revolution?
lol ok next. so I kinda don't like how things are going with my current setup. would you recommend going with aosp v.7? and if so, would I push the eb01 voodoo kernel through odin then flash the rom through cwm?
thanks in advance for any help!

Won't boot back to dj05 because you probably didn't do an odin complete back to djo5. I'm betting you just tried flashing the rom ontop of your eb01 modem.
Your theme/rom issues are stemming from a lack of wiping data more then likely before flashing over the new rom/themes.
If you're running voodoo, try super clean 2.4 w/ voodoo...really nice and fast.

another problem I forgot about- i cant use tibu on sc2.3 cuz of a busy box problem, and busy box from market won't work.

To be honest, I've never used a backup software. I manually copy and paste. any apps I download to a file on my computer then transfer them back over.
Follow these steps though.
1. Charge the battery till it reads 100%
2. Place Super Clean voodoo 2.4 on your SD card on your phone and enter download mode.
3. Plug in phone to odin and using PDA flash over eb01 modem
4. Go into CWM wipe data twice/bat statistics and cache...then select locate super clean 2.4 w/ voodoo and install and enjoy.
If you already have the eb01 modem set up, just download the sc 2.4 w/ voodoo and place it on your sd card and reboot into cwm. flash data at least twice and cache on a full charge. Then locate the zip file and extract/load via cwm. Should be good.
ok thanks. once there, should everything be wiped enough to be able to flash revolution theme on?

If you're going to flash a theme over sc 2.4, I'd still wipe data twice and cache...that's just me though. It's always best to start fresh you know?
yeah gotcha. can you help me with the busy box issue? or should I just pull all the apps from my phone to my computer?

I've never really pursued anything that way. I run on flashed phones so there's alot more chances for things to get f'd up so I've always done things the extra cautious way unfortunately. That way if I get a corrupted sd card error or anything along the lines, I'm secured. Plus I keep a change log for prl and modem settings.
