You can skip this if you only want to know about the games.
First, this is my first mobile phone in 5 years. my last was a motorola v3, and i never interested in phones. always liked games, and pcs, and when i saw some games as NFS for android i tough i should give a try for phones.
After 3 days searching for info, for the best phone to buy in my money range, i got 5800.
I was first disapointed in 3d aspect, since i didnt manage to make any game work. i knew it would not have an galaxy S or an hd Desire perfomance but i tough it could work.
To the point:
The games WORKS on i5800, its not a guess. i have seen some reports in forums, but didnt figured anything, but you can figure that it CAN play 3d games playing raging thunder 2, since u will notice that only the car, and some textures dont work.
So my point is, someone should know what to do.
I got a source, that im trying to contact that made these games works. i dont care about the lag (i do alittle to be honest) but i want to get hid of the white textures. if i did not manage to get a response, i will post this source here.
Well, the openGL driver for the i5800 (You remember the Spica, the i5700 ? It's exactly the same for us, except on the fact that we don't have a supergeek to code new one) just sucks.
The GT-5800 GPU doesn't support 3d accelration, and that cannot be coded or simply put into it. But I've played asphalt 5 and prism3d and various other games on this so I suppose we do have some hope (ask them to develop textures that are supported by our phone?).
Maybe I should've just bought a ZTE Blade

Same here
I think infestedd is right bcoz GT-I5510 which has same hardware as galaxy 3 but it runs nfs shift super smooth bcoz it has proper opengl driver(I already discussed this problem in the thread with title finally figured it out). But where did you find HD games working on g3.

Well, the ZTE Blade doesn't have a GPU too. But i'm planning to buy one (since my girlfriend thinks i use my i5800 "not as you should use a phone").
GT-I5510 does NOT have the same hardware than I5800. I've tried to build a kernel for the I5800 using I5510's sources, and it does NOT work, there isn't even the sources for the CPU.
Just dying to play a HD game.
Does Chainfire 3D help?

Hey guys, where can I get some nice games for the new toy? On Android Market there aint' that much, and on the Samsung Store the only one available is Asphalt 5.
Where do you people go to look for games? I've seen a lot of videos with people testing N.o.v.a. on the Galaxy S but where did they get it?
http://www.gameloft.com, I downloaded the motorola Droid versions since there are no Galaxy versions. Workin just fine. Downloaded NOVA and Modern Combat: Sandstorm there.

How do u find gaming in GalaxyS? Is the sensor accurate?
I'm concerned since I really like playing in the Iphone and I hope its as much fun
You can always use an emulator like gameboid and others to emulate everything from nes to gba games, I find that a gba game offers a lot more depth than the average ios/android game, also brings back the feeling from the old days .
The gaming experience is really smooth on the Samsung. This is where the superamoled really is good. I think there are som vids on youtube where a galaxy runs nova and modern combat. Might want to check those out

ZUMA would look nice on this phone
GameBoid not working for me, at leat it didn't the one time it installed before I had to factory reset the phone again (stupid download unsuccessful error - can't install apps!).

It appears it doesnt work properly, atleast gameboid doesnt, hangs after I select the rom (it shows the image where I last saved and hangs there with distorted sounds, however the application still works, I can still press menu and go to settings etc). It did work fine on my htc desire before, so I'm gonna try some things to make it work.
The snes emulator works great, played mario kart the other day.
the gba one doesn't however
Anyone else find asphalt 5 doesnt have a particularly good fps? raging thunder 2 and all the other games seem to be 60fps. Looking forward to games to start using ogl 2.0
Asphalt 5 is not really optimized, it performs horribly on pretty much every device out there.
The motorola droid runs is pretty well, but ONLY the droid.
As for the rest of the games- Everything that works on the droid/milestone will work on the Galaxy S
All current mobile processors are based on Cortex A8 with ARMv7 instruction sets, and both devices contain SGX series 5 graphics. The difference between 530 and 540 doesn't really matter, pretty much the same driver.
My guess is that after 1 or two firmware updates for the device things will be running a hell of a lot smoother.
Give it some time, the nexus and droid also had some childhood sickness untill stuff started running perfectly.
asphalt runs sweet as a nut on my galaxy s. so does raging thunder
Toonwarz looks like its running pretty well...
i like bridge, solitair and quake, also search for chromatatron.. laser puzzle logic games i like a lot.
Did someone have the chance to check out H.A.W.X?
And generally, the galaxy S should be pretty much a gaming beast, with the large 4" screen which is probably the best in the market right now, and SGX540, which is the strongest GPU around, untill the snapdragon 8672 sees light (and might still be the strongest even after that)
Tested and verified games and fullscreen..
Asphalt 5
Tower Bloxx
Tangram Pro (love this game..)
Flight Frenzy
The Game of Life
Surviving High School
New York Nights 2 (nice but not full screen though.. for 3.5 - 3.7 screen)
Bonsai Blast
Katamari Mobile (love this game..)
Mechanics Touch
Sally's Spa
The Gube - 3D Rubik's Cube
..still testing others.. it is very tiring to install and uninstall the games even when using ASTRO. hehehe
I have a ton of games installed on my Galaxy S.

Hey there everyone!
I thought about getting the Xperia Arc but before actually deciding to do so I wanted to get clear knowledge on the performance in gaming, and maybe if there's any noticeable difference between that one and the Xperia Play, which I also thought about, but I'm not quite sure about deciding on the controller or the Bravia Engine and Exmor Sensor... both very nice to have actually.
Well, I already know that the Play is good for gaming, but how does the Arc fare? I heard it has a newer Qualcomm CPU in there, but are the 512 MB of RAM (or... what is available of it) any hindrance?
Maybe someone could try out some high(er)-end games?
There are lite versions of:
Raging Thunder 2
GUN BROS
Dungeon Defenders
Crazy Snowboard
on the Market to name a few examples... I'd be really curious as to how the framerates are on the device, perhaps also the emulation capabilites (gameboid and fpse)? Framerates or stutters or something of the sort?
Would be really great to hear some responses!
Regii
The Xperia play and Arc have the same CPU and RAM. so what i think is that they both have same horse power.
But it's up to you to make a decision are you gonna use it to play games or you wanna take pictures. OS is the same only the play got the interface to play PS games (or something like that)
I played gun bro's on nexus one that has a older version of CPU&GPU but it could handel it without problems.
here you can compare the two phones > http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3619&idPhone2=3608 you won't see that much difference.
Good luck choosing your phone
Quite right, thanks. My reference website didn't have the Scorpion listed as the Play's CPU.
Do you own one of these? Because even though they have the same horsepower, I don't know about performance in Dungeon Defenders or so, e.g.
The Playstation interface is unnecessary to me since I'd play emulators anyway, but the controller is quite attractive, even though I already got quite used to touchscreen controls on my G3 as well...

Thanks a lot If an Unreal Engine 3 game runs smooth, almost anything else will as well. And, as far as I heard, Play comes with Froyo and not Gingerbread, the Arc is the one with stock Gingerbread.
Think I'll actually go for the arc as the Bravia engine and the design are just tooo tempting! Thanks for the help!

Heck, then I really have nothing left to complain about! Well makes my decision all that much easier. Just will have to wait till a misty silver one arrives though, think midnight blue looks kinda cheap and is a magnet for fingerprints :/
here're some of the games I've tested.
Working:
- Asphalt 5
- Assassin's Creed
- Battle Bears
- Crusade of Destiny
- Dungeon Defenders FW Deluxe
- Dungeon Hunter
- GT Racing HD
- Hawx
- Oregon Trail
- Shrek Kart
- Spider-man
- Splinter Cell Conviction
- TurboFly 3D
- Zenonia 2
Not Working
- Asphalt 6 : force close during additional downloads/updates
- Samurai II - Vengence HD : not supported
Some HD games doesn't work. However lag do occur when my phone is syncing with the company exchange server. Expected though. Just make sure to disable internet or data transfer if u want to enjoy lag free mobile gaming.
cheers
Well perhaps we'll get Asphalt 6 to run somehow, and Samurai is not that interesting to me... what about fpse?
Well, what if you try to play dungeon defenders online?
Thanks for the info though!

How did you guys get dungeon defenders to work, mine crashes after the intro movie? Did you download over wifi or manually from the website?
i installed it from the market and then downloaded the ontent with wifi and it worked didn't crash. but what i noticed is that the game sometimes lagg but it's not because the cpu ors something it's because the ram it gets really low.

The game was developed with Unreal Engine 3, so no wonder there. Just wondering: what about the random reboots someone reported? Heard they had a connection to the game.
gun bros works a treat, looks great on the arcs screen, dungeon defenders works a treat too, how ever ive seen lag in older games, like this ninja game where u run up walls, it lags when you jump accross walls, also abduction2 lags at times when jumping
ive noticed that games like gun bros and dungeondefenders look really crisp and sharp... yet other games are a bit fuzzy, like they aint optimised for sharp screens
That's because 2D games like Ninjump only have a fixed resolution and can only upscale on high-res displays like the Arc's. 3D Games like DD or Gun Bros can always be rendered at a higher resolution.
Gotta say though that I experienced some lag in Dungeon Defenders with much going on on the screen.

Still have the source? Because that sounds very interesting indeed. And I myself can't find anything about this.
so im coming from sprint Samsung epic 4g (no 4g in des moines ia) well im switchin to Verizon for the Xperia play as i allways play Emulators on my epic with the keyboard and all those RPG games thats on the market and i been wanting to replay Resident evil 2 and dino crisis (which is very hard to play on a keyboard phone lol)
but i been hearing some stuff that the xperia play cant play alot of ps1 games on FPSE becuase its slow old hardware. people told me to go to the Droid X2 or the Samsung charge but it will be even harder to play games on those becuase there is no keyboard or game pad, so my question is, is the xperia play worth the 49.99$ then the 299$ samsung charge and droid x2? like i said im coming from a Samsung epic which i guess is a little faster (and i have roms on it that speed it up alot as i see the xperia play has not got Root yet for the verizon phone) so im hoping that someday the xperia play will get root and roms soon.
how is speed in terms of Broswer wise? i do heavy broswing and textin i also saw the battery life sucks on this phone (becuase root has not came out yet as the epic prob has the same battery life with out root)
im just tryin get some more answers and feed back from XDA as the people at the store dont know what there talkin about and i asked if they knew about emulators on the phone and they said they have no idea what those are
This blows my old Captivate away, and that's pretty much the same as the Epic. I've had no lag in any game. The Charge has almost the exact same specs if I remember correctly. The Droid X 2 is made by Motorola...enough said. Lol.
I haven't had any problems with FPSE, but I don't play very many PS1 games.
It could be optimized with ROM's, but they'll be here eventually.
Browser speed is fine and battery life is much better than my Captivate.
Welcome aboard.

I get a good 10-12 hours out of it with heavy use. I've been using my iPad 2 a lot these last few days and have only used the Play for a few phone calls and a lot of texting. I could have went 2 days without charging it.
I only got about 6-7 out of the Cappy with the same usage, and that's stretching quite a bit.
how is the 3G? anyone know if its faster then Sprint 3g wise? or is 3g all the same?
thats cool for battery and that means it will only get better once root and roms come
i just dont understand why didnt sony go to samsung for there better GPU and CPU i hear the adreno 205 is slow compared to the hummingbird )
Root is here and working and has been for a while
If you get a xplay on gingerbread 2.3.2 it's straight forward with a one click tool installed with an .apk called gingerbreak. If it comes with 2.3.3 it's another story you'll need to downgrade to 2.3.2 then rot with above tool and then update your phone OTA.
It's only xplay model R800i/a/ that can be rooted, I'm not sure about R800at and last R800x can't as of yet be rooted.
Check the development section for further info

Thanks for this thread. I'm looking at switching from my Fascinate to this. Wondering about battery life and how is the GPS system? My Fascinate is terrible about GPS, but my girl's Incredible 2 locks on fast. How fast does the Play lock-on?
The GPS of this phone is terrific, actually: it's probably the dark horse of its functionalities.
Icebear...FPSE runs awesomely on the Verizon Xperia Play (r800x). I've only played Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Destruction Derby and Nectaris but I get 60 fps on all of those without a problem. I had to slow down Destruction Derby because it ran too fast.
I too was deciding between getting the absolute fastest phone available versus the Play with its controls. If you plan on using emulators, then there is no question, get the Play. I can't imagine trying to play Castlevania or Destruction Derby with my thumbs covering part of the screen or without any kind of tactile feedback. Trust me, this thing is awesome with emulators and the controls are just as good as any dedicated gamepad (except for the analog pads(vs. the analog joysticks on the PSX controller) which I don't use anyway...but are supported with the latest FPSE release). I am beyond happy with this device because I'm into classic games and this plays most of them flawlessly (some PSX games have sound issues...check the compatibility guide on the FPSE website. The developer is always updating the emulator to improve compatibility).
The GPS works great using Google Maps...much quicker to lock on than my iphone3g that I used previously.
If you are a gamer, grab the play.
The battery life is awesome with or without root compared to my old htc phone. I'm have 3g turned off most of the time though, but I'm a heavy brwoser on opera and it will last more then 10 hours

Android 3.0 was ok for the only 4 games gameloft released then it came 3.1 and every game fails...gameloft released only 2 patches for asphalt 6 and heroe of sparta and tells everyone it was android fault and that they are waiting for them to fix it... 3.2 came and now i cant play any of those 2 games because of the new stretch to fill sent all to hell, graphics looks awful and there is no way to control it. I have also tryed old games that does not fit the screen (and use 3d graphics) and they work awful too. Anyone have the same google experience?
funny, the games i've tried all work fine. Like Trials, the emulators, and dungeon defenders. Maybe Gameloft should just stop sucking at building their games.
lol, poor Gameloft. They finally decide to stop being lazy(for lack of a better word) and make some games for the Xoom, then 3.1 comes out so they have to update all the many(4) games they have for the Xoom, and now 3.2 comes out.

Funny how many other games work perfectly well and only Gameloft is having issues that are the fault of the OS.
Let me give you my advice I always gave my programming team - don't write bugs
Gameloft games beats any other android os games out there in terms of quality and gameplay. The other games that works well are casual games. Sure they have compatibility issues but i can understand that because of the screen size, graphic card, ram, touch screen, gamepad, etc. The problem i have is that when there is a 3.x update they always f'up something and games or apps stop working. Many devs quickly update their apps to fix the problem but a company as big has gameloft it must be a pain in the ass to update that frecuently a game that already worked fine in previous version...its not their foult after all.
Seriously? Gameloft games are mostly trash. I wouldn't say they are totally bad but they are definitely not the best game dev.

There are some games that work well on the Vega.
First off check the market for the Nvidia Tegra Zone app. This will list all Tegra 2 compatible games which is at the heart of our Vegas.
Also Need for speed will work as long as you get hold of the Honeycomb version other wise its full of graphic issues.
As for Gameloft games you need to look for versions created for the LG P990 Optimus 2x as this is a Tegra 2 baaed mobile phone. Not all games will work but most will.
Have fun.
Jason.
