[Q] Meego? - G2 and Desire Z General

How would we go about getting this on our DZs/G2s?
I mean, the N1, NS, Desire, HD2 and Dell Streak all have it. (However badly it may be)
So can it be done?

Agreed, that'd be pretty cool

I really don't understand the concept of MeeGo. Is it just for show or to show that it can be done?

As a former N900 owner I'll just go ahead and state that you aren't really missing anything aside from a terrible clusterbang of software that's only half as functional as the stuff you already have, which shows no signs of changing.
But hey, you'd have freedom.

I imagine the same things that are stopping it from not sucking on those other devices would happen on the G2/DZ as well. I'm not sure, but I think the sticking point is certain drivers that don't work correctly.
I'd be really excited for MeeGo as it would enable a bunch of things I'd really like to do with my phone. I just don't know how close the developers are to solving those problems.

why the hell do u want meego when u have android? everything in nokia sucks

Derp.
MeeGo is much closer to "real" GNU/Linux than Android, for starters, which means that a lot of ARM Linux software just works. That is a real advantage.

Can you flash these with a WM6.5 Rom?

Just asking if anyone has attempted to flash the "Google" phones with a Windows mobile rom yet? Is it possible. Is anyone looking into it?
No its not possible, and GOD NO! Why the hell would you want to DESTROY a perfectly good phone with that CRAP?
I 100% agree with lbcoder,
why oh why would you want to flash it with a Windows Mobile OS ...
Oh FFS!!! WM on a sapphire....Android on a TD....WTF is wrong with you people??
You want one, buy it. you want the other, buy that. personally, after many years of WM, having been using android pretty much exclusively since i recieved a proto magic in early feb, i have no intention of going back!!
By the way....Nice to see you finally stopped trolling and started posting Jedi!

you guys are a little hard on the OP, a site like xda is all about getting android to run on winmo device and vice versa!
Hi,
I think that it could be very hard to use winmo in an android device. Android requires some specific hardware and I'm pretty sure, trying this, could be the better way to brick the phone :/
The bootloader isn't made for this... But maybe, it's possible anyway. Like the exploit to run debian over android (without changing anything). The limits of this system will surely be that android doesn't use a real X server (If I've well understand it uses some kind of framebuffer light X).
And to rejoin other voices... WHY, GOD WHY?!?
..agree with everyone's sentiment. Also, I don't think WM supports capacitive touchscreen displays.

This is true, besides a heap of drivers would need to be coded aswell.
If you want a Windows Mobile phone we can trade, you have my HTC Diamond with WinMo 6.5 and I'll have your HTC Magic

totally agree!
I'm pretty sure it's possible... Nothing is impossible. After all it is a "normal" phone with a Qualcomm chipset (The same as in several HTC phones + Xperia X1). Isn't Windows Phone (?) 7 supposed to support capacitive screens?
WM has more applications, thats one big reason. Its like comparing Windows with OS X, just because you got a Mac doesnt meen you want OS X. People buy stuff because they look good and at first dont think about what software they are going to use.
You cant run Age Of Empire or Duke Nukem on Android, etc.
If all you want is CRAP, but if you want crap, you should buy crap. There is no reason to buy this device when you want something different.
And no, it is not possible because of a lack of compatible drivers, and just because there are a few similar features doesn't mean that everything lines up. Fact is that it would be a *major* undertaking to run crap on these phones. To start with, you would have to write a new bootloader, and I doubt that that is going to happen since most real developers are more interested in converting wm phones to run android than the other way around.
And fyi: these devices dont have the right set of physical buttons to run wmcrap.
While I agree it would be neat to dual boot WinMo and Android on any hardware you wanted, I think it's pretty unlikely that anyone is going to bother going to all that effort since there are already hundreds of WinMo phones out there.

XPeria X10 and Windows Phone

The hardware is promising, is there any opportunity any cooked rom like X2 Rom can work for X10?
I don't really see why you would like WinMo on that phone.
Android is a nice platform as well as Windows Mobile. and it got a better market place.
It is probably possible, but then people needs to get they're hands on drivers and so on first.
I hope it meant to be a joke... Windows Mobile is a piece of ****, I am more than ready to forget it for the rest of my life. Ahh and Windows Mobile 7 seems to be even worse, thanks to the removal of multitasking, the sole reason I used WinMo for years.
well when i first saw this phone i was like I GOTTA HAVE THAT PHONE... then i saw it ran android Q.Q and my dream phone got flushed in the toilet before even getting it!!! so its a very legit question if anyone have any interest in porting winmo to it!!! i love winmo and i have so many programs for it... but ill probably buy it anyway even if it got the little green leprechaun in it... or should i wait for a SE wp7s... haha jk thatll be like 2 years from now if im lucky.....
Why not just go with the HD2?
Windows mobile is terrible and outdated, android owns it in every way, why would you take it over WM? Also if you want WM that badly with awesome hardware just get the HD2, thats like people asking for the supersonic to have WM LOL, sure the Supersonic is better a bit hardware wise, but not by a crazy margin imo.

Sigh... WinMo is still the most productive, customizable and functional OS out there. Also, the best busineess solution.
Andorid is still in diapers. Maybe one day it will be able to do as much as WinMo, but for now, it can't.
I agree that there is no sense in porting a different OS to a phone not made for it, except if it's dual-boot, which is cool.

[Q] Now WebOS on HD2?

It seems there's been little interest in previous mentions of WebOS on the HD2, and it's not gone anywhere. I saw that there is development of WebOS for the Hero:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822401
I wondered if it would be possible to use this development to port to the HD2 as we already have the android builds running well? Correct me if I'm wrong- i know nothing about developing, I just loved the Pre until I got close to the hardware!
Someone posted earlier today in IRC the root.img and the source code for that. I'm sure Mdeejay could do something with it.
ill eat my own **** if this phone can boot into winmo/wp7/android/ubuntu/ and webos lmaoo jk about the eating part haha

Most probably you will sir! You can have as many os as you want and it's possible!
I loved WebOS. Just always wished it was on bigger hardware like our HD2. I would give my left Nut to have a functioning WebOS ROM
Guys why is it soo good ?
What does it have over other OSes
WebOs is the best yet. Just need more hardware behind it..

I've got to admit I've not used it extensively, but I walked into O2 stores and tried the demo phones and it was the most fluid experience I've had. I'd love to try WP7, and of course I've loaded froyo ( and ubuntu) but I've found android frustrating as information just isn't accessible without jumping in and out of an app, and I'm worried WP7 will be similar. No multitasking is a big downer for me- I do loads of work and research on my phone. With CHT2 Sense seems great, if only it was abit more stable! I'm hopeful on that one though! but yeah, WebOS seems so smooth I forgot I was moving between applications.

Meego too- i nearly went an N900 over the HD2, now glad I didn't!

Go play with one for 10 minutes. You'll quickly see why webOS is a juggernaut among mobile operating systems.
Everything else just feels like **** (pretty much) once you use and have experienced webOS's fluidity and easy of use.

I agree. My nephew has a Palm Pixi and WebOS is truly sweet. Ever since he got his Pixi I have been yearning for WebOS on my HD2. If the Acer Liquid Stream launcher worked better, it would suffice me. But it has some bad issues.
Can we like start a poll for development of webOS on the HD2?
webOS (sorry Google, sorry Apple) is surely the best mobile OS out there. (I Know, I've had them all).
Well one plus side to it, is it supports homebrewing.
What does it take to code a port like that? A bunch of assembly language programming and hardware interfacing? Honestly I have wanted WebOS on any device for a long time. Since it's based on linux, shouldn't there be a way to somehow set it on top of an Ubuntu build/Android build?
And on top of that, wouldn't HP's legal team be raping anyone who even thought about attempting to port WebOS on anything?
http://www.webosroundup.com/2010/12/hacked-webos-appears-on-htc-hero/
According to this source, the entire development on the hero was a hoax. Can anyone confirm?
Any screenshots??
I would be surprised if HP made any attempts to stamp out a port of WebOS. HP has been supportive of the WebOS homebrew scene, and they need to increase their user base by any means necessary. Just like Microsoft with WP7 it's in their best interest to turn a blind eye to this sort of thing at least until their "ecosystem" has a better foothold.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can we have webOS on our HD2's
Its more powerful has a bigger screen and well its an HD2...
the Palms are way to small for such an amazing UI.
Where do I donate to help this along ??????
Forreal..i would also donate myself...
I would love to see webOS on our HD2's. Haven't had the opportunity to use it yet, but I've heard nothing but good things about it. Also heard it's very easy to port iPhone games to and it plays them just as good as the iphone... with HP behind it now, we'll probably be seeing lots of games and apps for that os.

[Q] Gingerbread on Focus?

I was just curious if anyone has any thoughts on Gingerbread on a Samsung Focus? I read that the Nexus S with the recent Gingerbread installed is the identical phone. I am very happy with Phone 7 and have no intentions of switching but the possibility could give us all much more value with the Focus. The thought of Gingerbread on this phone may also add to the longevity and a market value if someone wanted to sell it before their contract is up. I love phone 7 and hope they start some regular updates to make the phone even better.
Yep.. it's called the captivate LOL and probably not because it's a 3 button phone, kinda why HD2's and other window mobile phones are not upgradable

on a side note.... the HD2 is upgradable... they've successfully put windows 7 on it. The only catch so far is it doesn't have the correct licencing so it isn't able to have working live tiles or the marketplace. But none the less.... its on there working.
I dont think anyones been working on Android on our phones yet. First thing's first is to get WP7 cracked open totally then they can do their magic. That's still a ways off though.
If you want android on a phone, how about you buy an android phone and not clutter wp7 areas.

well work in progress...considering they said WM7 wouldn't be able to run at all on any other devices Id say its a pretty huge step. Probably the only WM phone that can do it and do it well. Android still doesn't work fully on my touch pro 2 but I kept that phone just for that reason that one day it WILL be able to run it.
the HD2 can run android (almost full), WM 6.1/6.5, WM7 and I think they were saying they're starting to work on getting webos on it too so, pretty stellar phone I would say!
Still, like I said, I think android running on our phones is still a long ways a way. They only just recently cracked one of the HTC WP7's to be able to run other roms. Big step for sure but still a far cry from running an entirely different OS

Yeah well considering I use the GPS, and camera a lot, and live tiles now that I have it. I wouldn't consider that close lol That 4.3 screen is just awesome for TomTom. I'd rather use my HD2 as an android device before a windows phone 7. Web OS might be interesting though... aah so little time some many possibilites. Another problem is the Focus is only a 3 button phone, I duno if you can rework Android to work on 3 instead of 4.

Thanks for the useless comment. This is a legitimate question. Not all of us want to spend the money on every different devices. I'd like to be able to run android for testing on the Focus if it was possible. Nothing wrong with that question.

winmo on streak

hi, i insist to know is it possible to have window mobile on Dell streak?
Any one?
I insist to know why would you want to?
Never mind, I don't care...
Pretty sure the answer is no, though...
i like the design and wide screen of dell streak, but due to the aplications that i use for my work, the winmo is still very important to me.. Not to look down the android bcause it will grow fastly, but for now the winmo still fulfill my need a lot..
Let me know when Bob Pro (Windows ME) has been ported over to the Streak...
theres a million things keeping windows mobile off the streak. mostly drivers and a way to boot it and the shear need. if there actually is something in the world that runs on windows mobile that doesnt run on the streak, than why buy it in the first place?
Why would anyone want to?
You wouldn't replace your Sony DVD Bluray cinema system, with an Hitachi VHS cassette player would you

Actually this was not a that-far-out question for me. I bought the Streak for the size not for Android. Yes I'm getting warmed up to Android but I guarantee you that if someone ported WinMo 6.5.X to the Streak I would jump in a heartbeat.

Seriously?
Why on EARTH would you even entertain WinMo? Unless there is some seriously proprietary application that is dying on the vine of 6.5, name one thing you can do on WinMo that you cannot on Android? In fact, I can't think of something the Android doesn't do better...

Not to offend anybody, but android is still new.. For me, who deal alot with some middle east asia language like arabic, the android still unsupported.. But personally, i'm also look forward for the development of android, coz for me what ever good technology we achieve nowadays, we can make use it wisely for our better daily life, not to be fanatic.. Just like i said, not to offend anybody, different people might use different application according to their own interest, while some others might even didn't bother it at all.. So, don't judge other people based on your interest and condition, there might be some reason that other people need while you didn't..
I had windows mobile for 5 years, I'm not bashing it, I'm just questioning the need. Its an outdated os at this point and I'm just wondering what windows mobile could do at this point that android can't.
Once upon a time I couldn't stand WinMo...but once I figured out how to use it, I left the Blackberry world for good. When I got an iPhone, there were lots of things I missed from the WinMo world.
Since I have 5 lines on ATT, the HD2 only offers me EDGE speed, and if it weren't for that, I would have probably carried that device for the past year..so I didn't mean to sound like I was bashing WinMo--it has its place in history for sure.
But why would MS be moving forward with Win7 phones if they didn't agree with some of us in that WinMo is a dying OS, much like Blackberry?
For me, personally, I can pick up any Android device and within an hour or two, be doing anything I used to be able to do on the Tilt or Blackjack or my personal fave, the Q9h...PLUS MUCH MORE...
Granted, if you need specialized languages and things of that nature, right now, at this moment, Android may not be right for you, but in time those things will come, too.

And if it's that big of a deal (languages), and you work with them so much... you might want to consider helping out on translations on getting official support for the language(s) you need.
