Is this possible?
As of right now I think the development are worrying about getting a recovery on our phones and we need the recovery to flash roms unless there's another way...
Not only that but sense is a cpu hog. Such a horrible UI.
CM6 is all I care about getting on here. FB/Twitter integration all exists in 2.1, Sense adds little other than pretty looking widgets.
Isn't cm6 2.2??

Yes, I was just referring to the fact that we havent needed Sense UI for anything but pretty widgets since Android SDK 2.1
Why would you want Sense over TouchWiz? If you we're looking for pretty there are lots of HTC Sense packing HTC phones on the market. The myTouch Slide is kind of running an ugly version of Sense but it still is Sense.
One more thing to consider, also. You won't find any reputable developer such as Cyanogen putting sense in their roms because of legality issues. So, if you do happen to come across a rom for this phone running sense, chances are its going to be pretty bunk.
Sense has some very appealing factors, such as the hibernate support and of course, the cosmetics of it
In addition, the new version of HTC sense is supposed to have a lot of optimizations meaning it will be faster than before.
At the very least, is it possible for a dev to port the algorithms used for hibernate to the Vibrant?
Use this. its not sense but its a launcher close to it. has 3d drawer and everything.

Possible? perhaps...
Desireable? perhaps not...
Likely? Given the legal issues involved? not very...
I am also interested in this.. But to be honest if it where to happen, it won't happen until the developers get the source code for 2.2 and haber time to play with it.
So, if we are lucky and someone does decide to work on this.. knowing the possible legal issues. It would take a few weeks (after official 2.2) to get it done.
But I have no doubt in my mind that it would work in our phones.

KingKlik(sp?) made a lot of sense roms for the MT3G and a lot of people seemed to like them. I just think Sense looks terrible, compared to any UI on any new age smartphone I have seen(except maybe Windows Mobile). I'm mainly talking about the launcher tough, the part that people for some reason like to throw on their phone even if they don't have sense.
Just noticed that I now have the updated Market place on my G1 (Automatic updates, comments in a seperate tab etc)
Is this new or have I just been blind? :/
Sent from my T-Mobile G1
Your blind jk. but separating comments, auto update all the apps was an 2.2 os features, since may on the nexus one.
I know it was a 2.2 update but I thought only 2.1 & above got to see the new market, I thought us on 1.6 was stuck with the old market.
Guess not then, shows how much I used Fast Web Install from App brain then XD

I got excited when my new preowned hero had an update available
Thought maybe I was getting 2.2. No such luck. Just an update for 2.1 that just breaks Facebook contact sync.
So now I'm cm6.1 as 7 seems unstable. Keyboard transparency and the like. But no sense!
I love sense and I'd like to stay on 2.2 or above. Does anyone know if we will be getting an official HTC 2.2 or can someone suggest a nice fast 2.2 custom rom with sense?

Hi there
There won't be official 2.2.
Also - There are no fully working 2.2 baked roms with sense. Usualy there are huge problems with camera.
cheers
brat.haneq
Thanks. That's a real shame. Guess I'll stick with cm6.1. Maybe keep my eyes peeled for a nice 2.3.

Hi
Try Elelinux's Gingerbread Rom He does some pretty goody Roms
as for Sense you can try these two programs which do almost pretty much the same
Launcherpro plus and Beautiful Widgets together give you almost a sense like look
You might have to buy them if you really want them lovely effects
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HB5mW8MySSk
the latest launcher pro has sense like calender and contacts and stuff
and beautiful widgets does clocks and stuff
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vm6Luip0nho
I did actually try elelinuxs cm7 based Rom but I was gettin transparent keyboards and black screens even with the patch.
I have currently settled on a 2.2 with sense Rom. I'm too keen on friend stream and the contacts and calendar. I sorta feel like I'm doin HTC an injustice if I don't use sense.
It's only the camera that doesn't work and tbh the hero camera is pretty gash.
Thank you both for your suggestions and ideas but I can't buy from the mrket otherwise I would try launcher pro plus and beautiful widgets.

What can you expect from a big company and 2 years old phone ...
Sense is a horrible resource guzzling interface anyhow. I am in the same situation, I have a HTC Hero GSM running CM6.1. I missed sense at first, but CM is so much faster and featureful. You can really customise your phone on CM, so stop whining like a *****.

Maybe so, but the Dialer, Calendar, Exchange Mail client and Clock/Alarms/Stopwatch/Timer apps are all great (in my opinion).
How does the HTC surround compare to captivate? App market and performance?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
Well, you're comparing android with wp7. I'm not sure what the app selection is on the surround. I just got mine (and broke it) a few days ago.
Anyways, I believe you'll want android if you want an operating system you can customize. There's tons of roms for the captivate, which change the functionality of the device for the better.
Wp7 has limited customization allowed.
I see you have the inspire. I would keep the inspire above the captivate. You guys have cm 7 at least
Swyped from my Motorola Atrix 4g using XDA Premium App
I know all about android and I wouldn't give up my inspire for either of those phones. I know about rooting and roms. My wife wants something more basic but I still want her to have a good selection in an app market

Download the developer tools for windows phone 7. Open the emulator. Browse the marketplace. You can try some out that way. Their are lots of useful apps on the windows market place and new one's daily. After may when all the new api's are released i think the marketplace is going to see some REALLY awesome apps.
Also ATT hasn't release NODO yet but if you got it early like me... market place becomes blazing fast.
I can tell you use Android. All current windows phones run about the same speed. The Apps are fast, the keyboard and word prediction is awesome (this coming from a guy that swore he would never use a touch keyboard, got a topaz for free, hated the touch keyboard and now am no longer abbreviating anything because the keyboard onscreen is so easy to use). The windows phone 7 onscreen keyboard even kicks my wifes Iphone 3gs's keyboards butt.
Interesting ....
http://www.wpcentral.com/better-os-requires-better-keyboard
I knew that the WP7 keyboard kicked butt, but check that article.
I have both. I like the functionality of my Inspire, yet I like the smoothness and look of WP7. I use the Inspire more right now. Once our email server is fixed, I'll use the Surround more.

If this is for your wife that isn't a tech-head and doesn't like to tinker with everything i would definately recommend the surround. I got it on day one and have loved it all along that being said, after watching the browser wars videos on pocketnow i was compelled to tinker, and on the very day that the surround got NoDo i bought a captivate off of craigslist and have since rom'd it out with serendipity 6.4 and installed go launcher and a myriad of apps and have consumed most of my waking, non-work(and some work) hours just customizing.
But all that said, i still find myself gravitating to the surround because i personally think it functions better (especially now that i can copy and paste). Not to mention that i have a zuneHD and XBox360 and do the $15 a month zune pass for all-you-can-download music across all platforms...
So now that i have hijacked the thread, I would like to answer completely that the surround is a fantastic phone and the MS app market has everything i need (except the ability to satiate my need to fiddle with the details). I would definitely recommend this to your wife as she probably wont get the full android effect like you do.
I have a surround for my personal phone and a captivate as my work phone. My wife, who has an iPhone 4, plays with both of them occasionally. Wp7, IME, is definitley more wife family.
As far as my own usage, the only think the Captivate trumps the Surround in is the web browser, as fr as ease of use. WP7 has the best keyboard on mobile, while android has the worst, but swype trumps everything.
Here's a review I posted when I first got the surround. I'd update what I said about WP7 app store then, though. There are definitley more than enough quality apps on Wp7 now. My wife even envys some of my WP7 exclusive apps. If you have Netflix you can stream on WP7 but not Captivate.

I have Myn’s Warm TwoPointTwo on mine and have had for the last several years.

I'd used some ASOP and ROMs built on newer versions of Android but I always seem to go back.
Still the best form factor out there!

I still refuse to give up on the Evo Supersonic. It has the best form factor out there! The SD card, removable battery and kickstand make it the best out there for several functions.
Just the usual disclaimer. I have done nothing to develop the below ROM's and just passing on some good work by great people that are well worth tossing a dollar or two to support their development.
One I have loaded a "media player" ROM on it which can be found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1850220
It wont activate your cellular bands and shuts down most "phone" functions. I then loaded alarm clock pro which can be found here
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vp.alarmClockPlusDock&hl=en
It makes a great bedside alarm clock with a nice "floating" time display that is highly customizable and even comes with its own white noise generator!
The second I use as a full fledged media player and "gym phone" with a ring.to account loaded on it so it will still function as a phone with the wifi network at the gym if I MUST get calls or texts. The ROM I use for this is a Kit Kat ROM and looks and runs great! Its by EverVolv and Team Nocturnal.
it can be fond here
http://forums.team-nocturnal.com/index.php?/topic/1752-romkitkat-444-updated-110814/
Hope this helps! I would love, love, love to see a Lollipop ROM come out. I saw an old article saying CyanogenMod made one, but the link isnt active on it (Sigh).
Dave
Thanks for the tips Unidave199! I've also installed the Ubersonic media player ROM you mention onto my old-ass HTC EVO 4G original, and it runs great! I didn't have to flash GAPPs because it already had the play store and I could install whatever else I needed that way.
Ubersonic ROM has allowed me to run the Ingress game/app on the EVO like it's a little tablet with GPS, by tethering the EVO to the wifi of my current phone, without needing a phone plan. Nice way to upgrade to a more recent version of Android that is compatible with Ingress.
I'm curious though, in terms of different versions of Android, is there a particular version of Android that is at least version 4.0 or higher, that is particularly forgiving on the hardware? Like, uses the least amount of phone resources/memory/CPU so that I get more performance?
Difficulty here in finding valid links to ROMs that run on the original HTC EVO 4G. Most links are dead, so you can't find a download source for the ROM anymore.
I tried the Nocturnal ROM, which is KitKat 4.4.4. However, I cannot get it to create a google account, as it just says that Google servers are not accessible, so I can't access the Google play store using that ROM. Maybe I'm using the wrong version of the 4.4.4 GAPPs? Anyone running Nocturnal ROM and were you able to add a google account and access the play store to install more apps?
