[Q] [HELP] Sony xperia x10 - software update 2.1 - Quick question - XPERIA X10 General

Hi,
The usb port on my xperia x10 is broken (common issue apparently).. I'm currently on v1.61 and I was wondering how can I update the firmware to 2.1?
OTA says to connect the phone to the computer, but can't since the usb port does not work...
Is there a way to put it on the memory card and run the update??? or is there any other way I can get the firmware update?
Thanks again...
ooops should have gone in the questions forum.. sorry...

Erm a bit long winded but if you got a micro sd reader, take the memory card out and put in there, dowload, a rooting app, xrecovery and the 2.1 files from somewhere, like jerpeleas post, rename the 2.1 file update.zip and put it on the root of your memory card. Put the card back in the phone.
Run the root app to get superuser, install xrecovery, reboot and keep pressing back whilst booting phone back up. Then select install custom zip and select update.zip then let it flash
Hope this helps
Vengeance
Ps if its under warranty send it for repair

quick question.. where can i get xperia x10 rogers 2.1 firmware from? thanks again for your help...

Don't think it's possible as you need to kernel upgrade aswell.
Which I think need to be flashed with cable.

The fact that the USB port is broken is really serious. I will just give to you the quickest and best advice I can think about on this moment: take to your X10 to to get repaired.
Sorry mate, but I guess that's the best solution.

This. You'll need to use the cable to flash the kernal.

Is is possible to reflash ROM without the USB?

Hi
Is it possible to reflash the ROM without using the USB as my device's USB is damaged, I can charge the battery but it cannot sync with a PC. The seller told me I have invalidated my warranty and will not fix it. So I need to reflash the ROM to it's original ROM.
Thanks
You can flash ROMs using the SD card, a quick search will tell you everything you need.
Thanks I'll give search a try... hopefully that will solve my problem.
HTC really sucks, they want me to pay about US$440 to fix the USB, I thought they were joking at first; I can nearly buy a new HD! I will not buy a HTC device again in future their support are a bunch of crooks.

my X10a isnt updated to latest build number?

hello
from what i have been reading build number should be R2BA026.
mine is still R2BA023, is this normal?
i have ran SEUS, and the "software update" on my phone and they all show its updated
Are you branded or unbranded
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
Yes its normak if you have a brandet version. That means your carrier need to send out the firmware to seus. They maybe just eaitet fir the android 2.1 update. Instead of rolling 26 aswell

i have a X10a through telstra, its also rooted.

mate, u will either need to debrand completely, or flash your phone with a different ROM
(or is that basically the same thing !) i flashed my optus branded x10 with global generic (i think its UK or Nordic) and all is good.
another benefit of this is that u wont have to wait for Helstra to get their finger out and have a 2.1 branded ROM for you. if you have a generic rom, then you get the 2.1 update as soon as its available (via seus obviously)
cheers, tim
edit: when you run SEUS - it checks what version you have (telstra) and then looks in the dB for the latest telstra rom available. telstra have only published/released up to the version you are running, therefore "no updates available". If you were running a generic version, when you connected up to SEUS it would be looking for a different version. hope that is a bit clearer
if i completly debrand it, and something happens to it, can i just brand it again and send it back, kinda like. rooting then un-rooting ect
?

I'm also with optus, do I need to flash mine? or is optus quick with releasing updates.
Also does you optus My account widget works in your phone, coz mine doesn't show data usage.
I contacted optus to find out why and they had no idea that we got a widget in the first place

sure can mate, look at the decrypted ROMS page in the DEV section. But unless something serious goes wrong, you will never load a telstra rom on it again

I found that optus were the quickest of the Aussies, but still they would be a few weeks behind. You will NOT get the update within the same day as it gets released - put it that way.
re: widget - yeah mine never worked but now im on generic i dont have it anyway
wow, i just had a look through that thread, and theres pretty much nothing that would walk me through it, so basically i think i would screw my phone
unless ofcourse you feel like helping me, it sounds good!
could you help me out with what i need to get started or a tutorial or something?

right, im gunna want a bit of confirmation from others here....been a while since i did this.
using Bin4ry's post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=711907 i grabbed the latest files from the fileshare websites listed. basically the files that Bin4ry and the other guys have created are a script (batch files) that prompt you step by step. i know the method is called ROOT but its the same process. To ROOT in this original method, you had to flash back to an older revision of the firmware and then update. When you flash back to the older version, it is a generic version. Then you can simply use SEUS to update to newest. KEEP IN MIND that doing ANY kind of firmware update will completely erase anything on the internal memory. This is NOT the sd card, so pics and such will be ok but contacts - msgs - settings will all be gone. might be best to do the one-press root, install titanium backup first and then backup your phone book and other important apps that you may have.
main thing is to ask questions. there are sh!tloads of ppl on here with heaps of knowledge. be safe in the knowledge that you cannot, CANNOT completely screw your phone. you can always flash another firmware back onto it using SEUS. once ppl hack the bootloader, this will be a different story but until then just get in there and have a go
good luck and happy modding!!

main reason that you would root first is so you can use titanium backup to backup your apps and settings. You will still need to flash to a non branded firmware, jerplea has a few ROMS on his posts, probably best to have a look in those threads and ask the masters
i am by no means an expert, i just fumbled my way through it

when you say wont work....what do you mean? When running the flash tool are you following the prompts on screen? you need to have USB Debugging enabled on the Settings=>Applications=>Development enabled. let me kow where it is failing and we might be able to get it working for ya....if you are still keen anyway
just been reading through the original post from Bin4ry again (the flashing/rooting one)....i think that you should post on it exactly where the problems are, where it is failing and what you are doing. There are several active users on there that are very knowlegable on flashing
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=711907
i have debugging enabled.
i turn my phone off, hold down back, plug it in. and the green light lights up ( as it says in the read me ), i start X10flash.bat, and then it says C:/andrew/downloads/X10flash.jav -jav. ( or something like that ) is not a valid internal or external command, press enter to exit

it sounds like a java problem actually.....do you have java installed?
what OS are you on? if its Win7 64bit (or Vista 64bit), there is a 64bit java fix that you need to run also. have a look at this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=713457
if you are on a 32bit machine then chances are its a deviceID issue but from what you have posted above - it looks like the java problem.
win64 bit, and i think i got java cant remember lol.
will check it out though soon thanks

heeeeeeelp, after custom kernel!!

Hi! I put jerplea custom kernel into CM 6.1.3 via xrecovery, when i reboot the system doesn't work! i try to enter in xrecovery but it doesn't work!! how can i repair my x10??
thx in advance
Dario
Hook up the phone to the pc to the sonu ericsson software called seus. Hit the repair option.
If that doesnt work, try flashtool which is a pc program too which is in the x10 android development section. There r howto guides in there if u dont know how to use it. Flash the firmware with the baseband u want for the compatible ROMS want to run on the phone.
After thay u have to reroot the phone. Sorry about this but u gotta start over.

I'm going to copy and paste this reply to everyone who messes up their phone with a custom kernel. We are going to get LOTS of these kind of threads soon...
There are already a lot of ppl complaining that they "broke" their phone and dont know the reason, because they are to "lazy" to read the OP for installing custum ROMS and kernals.
Agreed, reflash with SEUS, I had to do that twice, when I was noob.

ok fires you must be to back to the original software 2.1
step 1
download Sony Ericsson updater
after download set up in your pc
step 2
connect the usb cable in your pc
step 3
open the sony ericsson softwer update and choos x10 phone and next
step 4
now turn off your phone
step 5
connect you phone and Click on the button right
now turn on your phone
You will notice that the computer knows the phone a new way
After the piece
You will notice that the program moved to the next step and descends Software
This step will take approximately 10 minutes
I am sorry for bad English
i am not trying to be a smartass here, but ppl should really read OP more carefull. you cant go wrong if you backup everything in xrecovery before aplying new update or rom. i tried several of the new custom roms and they worked all. just stick to instructions and everything will be fine

anyway to update from 1.6 to 2.1 without usb and xrecovery?

currently on 1.6. Usb port is broken and xrecovery is incompatible with 1.6. Any other way to update to 2.y?
Unfortunately, no.
Even if recovery was working,
to go from one android version to another (1.6-2.1-2.3) you need to connect your phone to your PC and use either PC Companion, SEUS or FlashTool. Recovery can't flash kernels and basebands, so all in all, you are out of luck. You need to fix your port.

Video tutorial for absolute newbies: How to Root + Upgrade + and load Custom ROM

Hey everyone I decided to make an in depth video tutorial so that no matter which version of Android you're running you can follow along until you reach the part of loading a custom ROM (in this case zdzihu's final Cyanogenmod 7).
This was made so that even the biggest noob can follow along this video tutorial if you're stuck with the X10 due to a contract why not get the most out of it?
Q: Have a an error? Got stuck?
A: Please use XDA search since I didn't do any of the developing!
Q: Why start from Android 2.1 and show every single step until finally flashing the custom ROM?
A: This was done intentionally so that no matter what version of Android you're on, if you find the video part that is like running the same version of Android as your X10 then you can follow along from there.
Q: Doesn't it seem a bit too long? I've seen shorter videos.
A: Again, this was done intentionally so that even if someone is currently on Android 1.6 or 2.1 they can follow along. I want to show people how to backup apps before losing eveything, its pretty annoying otherwise.
Q: Why bother showing every step?
A: My g/f and two friends are stuck with the X10 until their contracts allows them to hardware upgrade until next summer, I want to help other people get the most out of their phone. I don't care about donations, if this helps one person out I'm happy with that. It sucks paying tons of money for a device that is laggy and be stuck with it for years. XDA members have helped me many times, I just wanted to contribute back somehow, the more people share knowledge for free, then the world slowly becomes a better place.
In part 1:
-How to backup contacts (like I said, for newbies )
-How to install a driver for the computer
-How to root
-How to backup apps
-How to upgrade to the official Sony Gingerbread
In part 2:
-How to root Official Sony Gingerbread
-Downloading XRecovery
-Installing the Android SDK
-Installing Xrecovery
-Downloading xRecovery update
-Downloading Cyanogenmod 7 files
In part 3:
-Download Cyanogenmod 7
-Restoring apps via root method
I take no credit for any of the rooting methods, or making the cusom ROMs, this is simply a video tutorial, all necessary links are in the Youtube video description.
Nice work mate...
Apply for sticky, so many people ask these questions, yet you're probably the first to take initiative to make an ultimate Q&A

Wow that's so much easy to follow! I have just one question.. ( i am a noob) ok I was able to get GB ported through my phone when the rollout for GB was happening so it was a flash upgrade no root.. I have app to sd card installed and moved everything i could over to sd card for the apps that i couldn't move over is there anyway to get them backed up? or do i have to flash back to 2.1 and do this process from the very beginning?
thanxx for this fantastic topic!

I no longer have an X10, I'm using a Nexus One, but with Titanium Backup I'm able to backup any app even under these conditions: app on internal memory, apps2SD and/or apps2ext (its always backed things up). It should work for the X10 as well. There is no reason to go back to 2.1 as long as you are rooted.
If you're ever in doubt download a random app from the market and back it up with Titanium Backup, uninstall the app and restore it with Titanium Backup, thats the easiest and safest way to test. *Remember your phone must be rooted to use Titanium Backup*
Ok the phone is now rooted but I have ran into another road block, first is when i try to install xrecovery from the link provided it comes up with a mass lot of letters and symbols theres no button to click install after you click it initially.. Also I'm trying to install eclipse and get the android sdk but everytime i go to install eclipse i get this message...
"The Eclipse executable launcher was unable to locate its companion shared library"
What does that mean? what have i done wrong???
Ok since the last time i posted i went through everything again i sat down and worked everything out and now i have a rooted x10 on GB and most importantly i am running CM7!! thank you soo much for the helpful tutorials! even a complete noob like me is able to complete this. I can safely say that you have helped that one noob you wanted to help.
So now that i have done setup to get to where i am now, if i wanted to change to a different rom for some reason now do i just bascially download desired rom and load it through xrecovery? so long as i have the compatable bb71?
Thanks again!

Glad to read it worked out. I no longer have an X10 (using Nexus One) but yes, you should be able to flash other roms via xRecovery, I suggest you always make a backup first. *Note I have not tried other ROMS via xRecovery, try at your own risk, please research on how to flash your desired ROM before doing so. There could be certain variables that could cause an error such as: wrong version of xRecovery, kernal issue, baseband issues, etc.* Do some research in the correct thread of your desired ROM and I'm sure someone will be able to answer, best of luck.
p.s. Sorry for the delayed response, I'm swampped with mid-terms.
That's all gotta prioritize the more important things in life, im just wondering it seems to me that cm7 drinks the juice a little more than the stock 2.3.3. I do have a thread in place to find out as to why theres mention of calibrating the battery but i'm unsure on how to do this im waiting on a response in my other thread. eventually i want to get to 2.3.7 before if and when the devs make a ics port.
But thankyou again and good luck with the exams.
thanks!!! it work perfectly
Thanks for your information
