G1 unlock bootloader - G1 General

So I have T-mobile G1 model phone. It has firmware 1.0 with RC29 in the build number. I would like to update it to some version of cyanogenmod.
There are a couple of problems I am having when i try to follow the instructions at wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Nexus_One:_Full_Update_Guide
1. I am unable to unlock the bootloader using fastboot. I have Android SDK installed on my PC.
2.As far as I can tell, I cannot get into bootloader mode by pressing trackball and Power ON. The only way I can get into bootloader mode is through Power ON + Camera. I can get the "three skating androids" and i have the following showing on my screen:
DREA100 PVT 32B
HBOOT 0.95.3000
CPLD-4
radio 1.22.12.39
serial 0
The device freezes at this point. I have to pull the battery to restart the phone.
Any help, links etc would be greatly appreciated

That's because you're following instructions on unlocking the bootloader for the Nexus One, not the G1. *facepalm*
Attempting to flash the wrong files can brick your phone. If you were careless enough to not realize you were following instructions for a completely different phone that entire time, you should think twice about rooting your G1! You could end up bricking it.

Gotcha back!!!!!
Well, can you still use fastboot? If so, search on XDA Developers for the man himself EzTerry. He has a nice tutorial for installing a new Radio and SPL for the HTC Dream (dont worry, not the Nexus One, i've checked it ) Follow that and you can flash your recovery again, your ROM (Even CM7) and as a bonus: You get more then 10 mb of RAM!!!!!!! BUT if not, you'll have to put the DREAIMG.nbh (google it) to your sdcard and install it using the bootloader BUT you'll be back where you started, with Android 1.0!!!!!! (No root access, no nothing, but a standard recovery) AND, a bricked phone won't start up, won't go to recovery AND to bootloader and the most common reason for bricking your phone is: 1. Not seeing what file you are downloading AND flashing it
2. Putting it in the right order!!!! SO easy but SO many bricks!!!! That's all you need to know!!! Good luck!

HTC Dream
u r missing the part where BEFORE GOING INTO FASTBOOT U HAVE TO DO:
1. format ur SD card in fat32 format (u may need a laptop with an adapter to perform this becouse u actually cant do it from the phone since it doesnt start up). FOR ME IT DIDNT WORK UNTILL I FORMATED FROM INSIDE THE PHONE TOO BAD IT THAT DOESNT WORK OUT FOR YOU =/
2. place this file RC29 DREAIMG.nbh (google it becouse i cant post links) into ur just formated SD card (just paste it and do not place in any folder)
3. turn on ur phone by pressing and holding camerabuttom + ON(red one)
4. it should go from the colored screent to a kinda gray one with some instructions... and then u just have to follow on screen instructions.

[FIXED] HTC Magic partially bricked

Hi everyone,
Yesterday i tried to root my HTC Magic, but it kinda failed.
Now, it gets stuck at the Rogers screen (Rogers is the carrier, its the first screen you see when you boot). I can get in Fastboot mode but i have absolutely no clue what to do in order to unbrick the phone.
I don't care if i have to put a custom ROM or the original one, i just want to have a useable phone.
I'd like to have detailed instructions on how to proceed and where to download the stuff i need.
Thank you very much for your time !!!
EDIT: Problem fixed
Explain exactly what you were doing. It can be undone if you can get into fastboot. You might have to flash a different ROM or SPL (if you flashed the wrong SPL)
I tried this: http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magic_Rooting but the thing is, Method 1 didnt work for me, the line :fastboot boot recovery-new.img didnt work, it did what its doing now (ie booting but freezing at first screen) but by removing the battery and putting back in, it booted normally.
Then i tried method 2, but with the update.zip from method 1, this time it worked, i was able to apply the update, but when it rebooted, it froze, and now it freezes every time i boot, but i can still get in fastboot
i didnt touched the SPL.
the easiest was to fix it is to locate the file on the net called:
SAPPIMG_Sapphire_TMUS_1.88.531.1_COC10_release_signed.nbh
download it to your pc
format your sd to card to fat32
copy and paste the NBH file to memory card
put card in phone and power on while holding down the vol. button and it should automatically pick up the NBH file and just follow the steps
so i format the card, put the NBH file in, boot to fastboot, follow the instructions and thats it ?
that will put my phone back in its origial state ?
since i format the sd card, i loose everything, but i can backup without problems ?
EDIT: No, it did not work. I formated my sd card, put the NBH on the card, boot the phone in HBOOT and it didnt do anything.
Sounds like you got the wrong recovery image. Did you download h or g?
I'm pretty sure it was H
EDIT: Well first of all i tried this one: http://www.droiddeveloper.com/hrbuilds/recovery-new.img.zip
but it did no work properly: when i tried to do: fastboot boot recovery-new.img it booted to the rogers screen and froze instead of booting to the green screen
Then i tried this one: http://rapidshare.com/files/248983573/recovery-RAv1.0H.img
This time i managed to get to the green screen and apply the update.zip, but when it rebooted it froze and now it's stuck there
OK i fixed my problem, and for anyone who's having the same problem, here's what i did:
1- I downloaded Amon_RA's latest H recovery ROM (at the time it was v1.2.1) available right here
2- I downloaded the MyHero ROM v1.1.1 here
3- I renamed the Hero ROM to update.zip and copied it to my sd card
4- I booted my Magic in fastboot and typed this in fast boot: fastboot boot recovery-RAv1.2.1h.img
5- Once my phone was at the green recovery screen, i applied the update.zip
The following rebooting process of the phone took a long time (ie 10-15 minutes, be patient)
Once it booted completely, the phone was working perfectly with an Hero ROM.
At first i didnt receive any 3G connection, but after setting up the APN it was working fine.
I hope this will help someone out and thanks to everyone who replied to this post.

Hi Retucex,
I have an HTC Magic from Rogers. I haven't done anything to it, it's pretty much out of the box.
Your process explains how to upgrade to a Hero ROM from a recovery. How do I upgrade my phone that is perfectly running?
Thanks!
i wish it could be that simple on my magic too. the only problem is that it says fastboot remote: not allowed. what should i do, then?

You have what they call a perfected SPL, that will not allow fastbooting into a recovery ROM. There is a way to solve this, but it is not as easy as rooting. This thread should help.

There are many threads already about this, so a simple search should do the trick but for a general idea, you need to download the Android SDK. Then, fastboot into a recovery ROM, (google it, Cyanogen or AmonRa). Then, using the recovery ROM, flash a ROM of your choice, there are many on this forum, again, a simple search should do the trick. If you try fastbooting, and it says fastboot not allowed, you have a perfected SPL and should follow the guide above.

How to root (& unroot) a South African HTC Dream (MTN). [Now with froyo!]

(this comes from my post in the 'Rogers, heres your real root' thread, using a combination of Haykuro's and Lunatik78's methods)
EDIT! now with Froyo (Android 2.2), I've tried Chromatic 4.2, 4.3 & 4.4 (based on Cyanogen 6 RC3), BiffMod, AOSP 2.2 OTA, Yoshi 1.8 pancake and they all work - 12 Jan 2011
EDIT: newer radio works great too - now using 2.22.28.25 and H-Boot 1.33.0013d - follow ezterry's thread after rooting and getting your new ROM running - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831139
*Please reply to this thread with feedback if you've used this method! (And please let me know if a link is broken!)
I've just re-rooted my South Africa HTC Dream and thought I'd share my successful method, it's actually pretty easy. Please note however, that the steps in this method must be followed EXACTLY otherwise will not be successful.
BTW the HTC Dream's were only released by MTN but as the phone is not carrier specific Vodacom, Cell-C & Virgin-Mobile will work fine too.
To unroot your phone and go back to stock, PM me for the link for the RUU
This will very likely work on the Rogers Dream as that is what the original how-to was based on, if someone tries it, please let me know so I can confirm it here!
Info from phone: (yours needs to be the same otherwise you might have problems, the important stuff is in bold - if you don't know how to find this info then STOP here, you need to search & read up some more to familiarize yourself before rooting the phone)

RADIO-3.22.20.17 (or 3.22.xx.xx)
Jun 2 2009,21:33:16
Firmware: 1.5
Baseband: 62.525.20.18U_3.22.20.17
Kernel: 2.6.27-9af60ed4 [email protected]
Build: 1.87.421.1 146733 CL#47295 release-keys
Start:
Make sure your battery is fully charged!
This requires that you use SPL 1.33.2005. (this is safe on all rogers (or MTN) dream devices)
You need the Android SDK - get it here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
install SPL 1.33.2005 using this method: One Click Root for Rogers, come back here at Step 11 (see link below this how to install flashrec on a stock phone)
(See: Method to install flashrec (any .apk) on your Dream: steps-to-install-and-uninstall-apk-file-on-android-g1-device)
Check if you have SPL 1.33.2005 (to check, boot into FASTBOOT by holding Send or Answer and then powering the phone on, it should say HBOOT-1.33.2005 near the top)
IF you have it then proceed:
download givemeroot.zip
(md5: 4a58a5702fdf899547011888d9cc066f .. sha1: 99e38e4f8798e952e67421a42e7b053ea70957b7)
Extract the contents of 'givemeroot.zip' to the "android-sdk-windows\tools" folder
IMPORTANT: You have to put the rom you'd like to install (I've used Cyanogen's and SuperD's) in the root of your phone's sd card (a freshly formatted FAT32 SD Card) as well as the rom image "signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip" (MD5 checksum b3e12b004c155761a10b1a848288e0c3 - 3rd option - from here: http://developer.htc.com/adp.html#s3)
(YOU WILL NOT HAVE A ROM INSTALLED AFTER YOU COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING STEPS, YOU WILL HAVE TO USE THE ROM IN ZIP FORMAT TO GET ONE)
For Dream/G1 users: power off, then hold "send or answer" button & press power button until you're into "FASTBOOT" mode, make sure the words HBOOT-1.33.2005... appear near the top of the phone's screen!
NOW:
Connect the phone via USB to the computer if it's not connected already, 'FASTBOOT' should change to 'FASTBOOT USB'
Open a command prompt (Start>Run: cmd), navigate to your "android-sdk-windows\tools" folder and type in the following (hit enter after each line and wait for the 'finished.total time: x.xxxs' before continuing!):
fastboot flash radio radio.img
fastboot erase system -w
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
POWER OFF your phone (not reboot, power it off). (You can do this using the corresponding button [it says it on the screen] or just pull the battery [make sure everything is done flashing of course!])
(if you don't boot into recovery or accidentally rebooted, just pull the battery [if you notice top left it should read "FASTBOOT" or "FASTBOOT USB" if it's plugged in] you're not bricked, you just need to access recovery, not standard boot ;P)
Unplug your phone from the USB connection
Power up your phone in recovery mode (hold "home" + press Power). You should see that you are now in v1.4 + JF, that means you got the right recovery.
Select the option "Apply any zip from SD". Select "signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip", and then press the Home button to confirm. Do not reboot your phone yet!
Once that installation is complete, select the option "Apply any zip from SD" again. This time, select "update-cm-4.3.2.1-signed.zip" (or Cyanogen's current version, or your preferred ROM, I've used 1.6, 2.0, 2.1 & 2.2 ROMS, and then press the Home button to confirm.
When this is complete you'll see this:
Build: CyanogenMod v1.4 + JF
Formatting CACHE....
you may see "writing radio..." and boot back into the recovery but just reboot your phone by pressing Home & Back (or the trackball when "reboot" is highlighted). When you see "Formatting CACHE....", it's done, reboot now again (Home + Back).
The first proper boot of the OS may take a while (5+ minutes) then enjoy!
The newer radio image 2.22.23.02 works great on the SA HTC dream - I definately get better reception/more bars, I flashed it like this (In THIS order):
1) fastboot erase recovery
2) fastboot flash radio radio.img (get the img from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=640535)
3) fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (used Recovery-RA-1.7.0 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566669) (no need for the "Recovery-RA-1.7.0R" recovery image!)
Thank you, your guide work perfectly on my phone
No luck here, unfortunately. I'm stuck at the Recovery Flasher. I get Flash FAILED: Could not run command. Could be that your kernel was not patched yet as the newer Rogers one is running HBOOT-1.33.0010 (DREA21000). Oh well, I hope someone finds a way soon!
If your phone info is the same as listed in the first post then this will work (if followed correctly). Anything different may require a different method, I suggest searching for a solution.

i hve tried the fastboot method of rooting, but my attempts end when cmd give a remote- not allow error
so i have tried using the method above. i have successfully installed flashrec, backed up my existing image, no problem. so at this point i am supposed to shut down the phone and reboot into recovery, by holding the home button when powering up.
i tried using the reboot into recovery using the button provided in the new flash rec but nothing happens.
when i restart the phone while holding the home button, the HTC DREAM logo comes up and just freezes there. i have held the button for up to 5 minutes, nothing, i have also left the logo on for almost half an hour and nothng seems to happen.
Please help me out anyone? this phone is pretty lame as stock especially for the amount you pay for it..
sounds like you're not doing it to the letter, after installing flashrec it says "For Dream/G1 users: power off, then hold "send or answer" button & press power button until you're into "FASTBOOT" mode, make sure the words HBOOT-1.33.2005... appear near the top of the phone's screen!" NOT 'i am supposed to shut down the phone and reboot into recovery, by holding the home button when powering up."

Hi,
Thanks for great post on rooting your SA dream. I've been trying to root my phone for ages and have bricked it once.(But thank goodness leaf didnt released it and fixed it at no charge) So this time when I do it, I wanna be very sure.
When you say:
"You have to put the rom you'd like to install (I've used Cyanogen's and SuperD's) in the root of your phone's sd card "
Where do i get the cyanogen or SuperD's rom?
Scratch what i said before... i used Chromatic 4.5 rom and my build number is 1.86.421.1 146733 cl#47295 release-keys.
And it works perfect.
Thanks so much. Looks amazing
If you haven't figured it out already then you can get a ROM from one of the ROM threads in the G1 Android Developement section.
But perhaps it might be a good idea to do a little more reading as to why you would like to root and what ROM you would actually like on your phone, remember you can't just put any ROM on and may brick the phone again if you make a mistake.
You effin ROCK!!!!!
Worked like a charm!
Thanks Pardus! My HTC Dream is now like a new phone! I'm loving it!
Only problem I had was the rom image "signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip" from developer.htc.com/adp.html#s3 was either corrupt or just not dowloading properly. I got nervous at first when it didn't work but then googled the file name and downloaded another copy. I then mounted the SD card and placed the new file in the SD card root. It was all good from there.
Awesome!!
Excellent, doesn't it just give new life to our Dreams !
So far the 'Official AOSP 2.2 OTA test-3' ROM is working well for me as is the new radio and spl (2.22.28.25 and 1.33.0013d).
okay im new tothis and im a noob lol, well im having problems with the cmd section, cant get my pc to do anything with cmd, any idea's on how i can get past this? Since I havent actually ever used cmd before so I don't actually know what i need to type when I get to that step, please help

OK, you'll need to learn quick, read read read here on the forums. Mistakes can brick your phone.
To get a Command prompt in Windows (XP) click: Start, then Run, then type "cmd" (without quotes) then click OK
If you have the SDK installed properly then you can try typing "fastboot getvar battery-voltage" (without quotes) and see what result you get.
Okay I figured out how to use cmd, I'm running windows 7, now I have one huge problem, I type in the full name and everything with the "fastboot flash radio radio.img" then it tells me error: cannot load 'radio.img' what do I do now? Since I know I can't skip this step

[Q] HTC Magic with Hero rom keeps looping on boot :(

Hi xda,
I'm sorry if this is a "common" error, but I couldn't find a thread via google or the search function - If I'm just an idiot, SORRY.
The problem is, that my little brothers HTC Magic is failing on boot. The screen keeps on showing the logo for HTC Hero. - Then he tells me that his friend told him that the Hero rom were a better choise, so the friend TRIED to flash the hero rom over at the magic, but now it loops the logo.
My questions is :
1) Is the hero rom a better rom for the Magic?
2) How do I get it to work again?
Is it rooted?
Can you get into recovery?
Can you get into fastboot?
What radio, hboot and recovery are on the phone?
If you or your brother don't know what those things are then you've got some reading to do. Google those words or search in this forum. Once you understand what those things do or if you already know, then report back.

U need to clear about the Hero ROM you flashed. Original Hero ROM can not run in Magic, only Cooked Hero ROM can.
Also, If u flash cooked Hero ROM for Magic, u may need the recovery for this ROM (usually suggested by the dev)

If recovery is pressing BACK+POWER, than yes At that screen it say:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32 A ENG S-OFF H HBOOT-1.33.2010 (SAPP10000) CPLD-12 RADIO-3.22.29.17
When I choose fastboot (HBOOT?) It's trying to load some images, but fails.

Recovery is home+power. Try it, if still run, u can download the Magic Rom with 3.22 radio.
If not, Download recovery Magic of RA or Seo,... use fastboot to flash the recovery image.
Or u can download official ROM and flash it.
Good luck

I think u should download the original ROM like sapphire.img, put it into sd card, start the phone in Hboot and it will automatically find the img file to flash.

The USB connection with his computer isn't working so he won't be able to just run the RUU. He'll need to extract the sappimg file from the RUU, put it on his SD card via an adapter, and flash it from hboot on the phone.
With that being said, @the OP, still grab your CID and let us know which country the phone originates from. Then I'll pull the file you'll need and post it back here for you to download with instructions on how to use it.

Wait, just realized that link require that you be able to boot into the ROM. So, we're going to take the plunge. If your wrong, the file just won't flash, so no worries about bricking.
Go here and download that file. Rename it to "sappimg.zip" and put it on your SD card. With the SD card in the phone and the phone turned off, boot into hboot holding (volume down+power). The phone will pick up the image and ask you to hit "ACTION" to continue (ACTION is pressing the trackball in). Press "ACTION" to flash the file, after its done (will take about 5 minutes) it'll ask you to hit "ACTION" again to reboot. Do that and you'll be back stock.

So you can't get into hboot by holding (volume down+power) to boot? If not, can you get into recovery by holding (home+power) to boot?
Nope
I tried :
Down Volume + Power : Frozen on boot logo
Back + Power : same result
Home + Back + Power : same result
TrackBall + Power : black screen with blue led

So, there is no solution ?
Warranty is now finished ...

a "Catch 22" issue

I Really hope someone can help me out here, i'll explain the whole situation and provide all the details (if any are missing, just let me know). So, here goes!
I purchased a new T-Mobile MyTouch 3G over eBay (last week) and just received it today, When i turn the phone on, it gets me to the "No SIM card" with emergency call screen. When i do put a SIM card in, it gets me to the Android Setup but when i tried to connect it obviously fails (this sim has no 2G/3G connectivity) but i also don't see an option to turn on the WiFi.
Stranger is i can't get to the menus, even by pressing Home or Back or anything, all i get is the Android Setup or the Dialing screen, the "Menu" button gives me the "Wireless Settings" but without WiFi in there.
Stranger yet, without a SIM, i can't seem to get to the menus to enable debugging mode on USB, or lets face it, i can't get anywhere! i'm just on the screen that says i "No SIM card"
When i do Back+Power to go into the Fastboot, i get these details:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32B SHIP S-ON G
HBOOT-1.33.0013 (SAPP30000)
CPLD-10
RADIO-2.22.23.02
Oct 21 2009, 22:33:27
From what i understand, this is a "Perfected SPL" and need to create Gold Card, but as I can't get to any menus or finish the setup, then i can't enable Debugging. While i can do the command fastboot devices and it sees the device, i can't flash anything as it says not allowed.
So i seriously have NO IDEA how am i to proceed.
To create a Gold Card i need to download Terminal Emulator, but i can't get to any of the apps (is that normal for a phone with old OS?!).
Is there ANYTHING i can do? I wanted this phone for my dad, and i just can't get a break!
Please give more info about your version..
Download the Fastboot commander from mumilover and post here all details..

Find a RUU for 32B Sapphire and flash it via fastboot.
Just go to fastboot, connect it to the pc and flash it.If you have an original RUU then it is better. Can you go to the recovery menu? (Home+Power button)
I thing your problem is Sim card Locking
You need to either borrow a sim with data, or make a goldcard (borrow an android phone) and get to a rom which allows use without a sim
Do you have T-Mobile?
Sent from my Gingerbread on Sapphire using XDA App
Activation details
You will need a data enabled sim to activate a new unlocked phone.
An example using a AT&T sim is given in the youtube video below
I'm not being allowed to post external links.

Sorry for the late reply, i've spent this month in the hospital and currently recovering
I can't do any tests at the moment, as soon as i can, i will answer all questions, thanks for everything!
Fix!!
I had this same problem, and the fix was ridiculously simple, it just took a long time to figure out.
The only catch is that with this method, you have to install a custom ROM or just live with a non-US ROM. After this, though, custom ROMs are really easy.
First download this SAPPIMG file and rename it to SAPPIMG.nbh:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4895749
This will not fix your perfected SPL, but it will allow you to use your phone normally without a data plan. Just skip the Google login step and turn on Wifi to use the Market, etc.
To flash it:
1. Put the SAPPIMG file on your sdcard. If you can't mount it with your phone, get an adapter, I guess?
2. Power down your phone.
3. Boot into hboot mode by holding volume down while you turn it on.
4. Wait a sec: the phone should see the SAPPIMG on the sdcard. It'll start extracting the file and stuff.
5. It'll ask you if you want to install it. Say yes, of course.
6. It'll take a while. If it gives you an error, do the following, else go to 7.
6a: Start over from step 2. Try this a couple of times before 6b.
6b: Download a different 32B Vodafone SAPPIMG. No, T-Mobile won't work.
7. Boot up the phone normally. You'll have a different splash screen, but the phone will still work fine on a USA network.
8. Your phone is now usable.
OPTIONAL: Flash a custom ROM. Custom ROMs can speed up your phone, and add many new features.
1. Download and install Universal Androot from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747598.
2. Use it to root your phone. If it doesn't work the first time, try again. If it still doesn't work, try unselecting "Install SuperUser" and try again. If you deselect it, install SuperUser from the Market.
3. Download ROM Manager from the Market and install ClockworkMod Recovery.
4. Now, boot into recovery mode by holding home+power until the splash screen shows.
5. Download the ROM of your choice and install via recovery mode or ROM Manager.
So, hopefully that covers everything. I am not responsible for bricking your phone, blah, blah. Follow the instructions carefully; If you have a question, ask.

[TUTORIAL] S-OFF guide for the complete Hero newbie...

I know its an old phone now, but my friend gave me this one to update, and it took a while for me to figure it out (used to my Evo 3D)... so ive put this together to help anyone wishing to S-OFF and can't work it out...
*** This is for GSM ONLY. Don't try it if your not sure or you'll brick your phone ***
This is what I did to get S-OFF...
Download Modaco's SPL HBoot 1.76.2007 and move it to your SD Card.
Download Clockworkmod Recovery 2.5.0.7, rename it to " recovery.img " and move it to your SD Card.
Download UniversalAndroot and move it to your SD Card.
Download ES File Explorer from the market (or any other file explorer).
Download Android Terminal Emulator from the market.
Enable installing from SD Card.. (Settings -> Applications -> tick Unknown Sources)
Open ES File Explorer and install Universal Androot.
Run it and press Root ...
It should say.. "Woot ! Your device is rooted !" ... close the program.
Open Android Terminal Emulator, and type " su " . Press enter.
Allow SuperUser access.
Type " flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img " and press enter.
It should just show a $ sign on a new line.
Power off your phone, remove and replace your battery and press and hold the Home button while pressing Power.
Your phone will load into Clockworkmod Recovery.
Select " install zip from sdcard ", then " choose zip from sdcard ". Select " update-hero-hboot-1.76.2007-signed.zip ". Press Back, Back and " reboot system now ".
Leave the phone to update HBoot. Do not interrupt it. (It restarts a few times)
Once done, the phone will restart and load as normal. Check the HBoot version by going into HBoot again (turn off, hold Volume - and Power) and it will hopefully show S-OFF, Hboot 1.76.2007. Job done.
Great guide, very simplistic and understandable. Thanks for this!

Yeah, it was nice, now I just need a reason to get S-OFF
Greeting...
Since i have Rooted my Hero and Flashing ROM, I never knew we can/must do S-OFF.
I'm a bit curious...is it necessary S-OFF for Hero? Any advantages?
From my little understanding it just to make control of our Hero's partition.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
S-On (Security-On) - is HTC's final resort for locking certain parts of the phone.
With S-On, the NAND section of your phone is locked and will fail to install software (and sometimes gain root access) depending on which ROM and phone your using. On some phones (not sure about Hero) you have to install a separate boot image with fastboot to let you install a custom, non HTC ROM, as it isn't from a signed HTC source.
With S-Off (Security-Off), you have full write access to all partitions on your phone, can gain permanent root, and all ROMs / boot / radios / recoverys should install successfully.
It doesn't appear that most Hero users need S-Off to allow you to install custom ROMs, but as I wanted to update the radio version, I chose to.
my hero has a hboot with s-on, and i can update radio images. If u want, i can upload the hboot i have..
I have given the Hero back to my friend now after updating...
Things have changed between the Hero and Evo 3D, but when I use something, I want to have full control on what I can do, not to be forced into not been able to do or access certain things.
Although, I can understand why HTC implemented Hboot Security, careless use with S-Off (flashing wrong images or disconnecting too early) - and you will brick your phone.
thanks this guide works perfect for my htc hero
I think I'm lucky, then...
I have a GSM HTC Hero bought back in 2009 and just recently heard this S-OFF issue.
Only recently I checked and my boot loader is in S-ON state.
However, I never had a problem installing whatever I wanted on it.
In fact, the phone was rooted a few days after buying it and it remains rooted as of now! I even had to re-install the official HTC 1.6 firmware because I installed a non-compatible recovery ROM...
I wonder if any of this has to do with the fact that I purchased it without a SIM lock...
Working great! Even if you are on 2.1 use the 1.5/1.6 option in androot. otherwise rooting will not work. (even though it says "Woot blabla")
Hi im getting flash_image not found in the emulator am stuck please help.
can i just ask what might be a noob question about this whole process...
once this phone is rooted and has s-off will this open it up to putting any network sim card in it? i do have an old htc hero but it's currently locked to t mobile uk as it's an old contract phone.
thanks in advance..
S-OFF allows you to execute certain commands and gain access to the NAND partition of the phone.
In order to unlock your phone, you must buy an unlock code somewhere (I've heard them being about 5€, correct me if I'm wrong).
Thanks for the explanation. Appreciated.
To be honest I'm a bit surprised that there's not a way to remove the sim lock through another method. Having played around with unlocking my sensation and flashing cyanogenmod it just seems like there's nothing you can't do with these phones these days..!
Thanks again..

So was I when I had to unlock my first LG years ago.
"unlocking by unlock codes is the safe way to unlock.." source
There are many topics about unlocking a T-Mobile Hero for free, but with no success. However I only found a topic about unlocking an Orange one.
Can I S-OFF using this if i rooted installed CWM and flashed CM9 already ?
I'm having the 'flash_image not found' problem too.

I tried it again, but still S-ON?
I put hboot image on sd card, removed battery, put it back, went into recovery RA1.7xx, flashed hboot zip file.
It did few things and asked me to confirm it with "HOME + BACK" button, which I did, then again it did few things and then booted into recovery, showed as if its finished and showed me a last command Formatting Cache.... though it was stuck there for atleast 2 min so switched off the phone, went back in bootloader, it still showed S-ON?
I downloaded file from modaco as well, both files are same, modaco's and the one mentioned above... I checked MD5.
What am I doing wrong?
