Hopefully by some time we will have a good idea of the procedures of who to call and from what country it would work for.

Thanks for this. I called twice. First time, the lady was reluctant to help me and continued on insisting that I call MS UK!! I said "Whatever!" and hung up!!
I then called again and got through to a guy who was excellent. Gave him my details and told me to hold on. I too gave "A" UK landline number and he didnt say much. He then came back with an activation code....and it worked!!

That approach didn't work for me. You want them to think youre a n00b. I said that I was glad to finally speak to somebody because I didn't knew what choiches I had to make to have actually somebody on the phone. After that I told the good fellow that I configured my email account (live, hotmail etc) and that it's needed to be activated. I said that there where 5 bars, and that I found it rather weird beacause I didn't new If they want an andress, name etc. Then the men laught and sais, no It's needed a 25 diget code, and every bar you can enter 5 of those. I played dumb and I said I called my provider, and they said I needed to call HTC, wich told me to call microsoft. The guy laughs again and he only asked for my name and my telephone number.
What I want to say is...make It like you didn't knew what hit you, make them laugh. The will not be suspicious!!

it kinda aided the process!!
I have a product key for the windows live activation for Windows Phone 7. I don't know if its a one account use or not, I can hand it out if you'd like..
I've had to use it more than once so I'm pretty sure it's not a one use product code.
It was easy for me to get the code since I live in the US, so if you wanna give it a try let me know

these guides are awesome since Microsoft has no Internet access so far in their companies and noone of MS knows about this forums...
No luck for me, they didn't give me any code, after i gave my phonenumber the asked from where it is, ok ****, from holland told them that i bought this phone in the us when i was on business (-: the only thing the guy gave was the support number of MS in de Netherlands.
Who can give me a code, this was the second try and the second failure.....

try again, i gave them my indian mobile number, told them i was calling from india and my brother got me the phone from the US..had no problem whatsoever

Why don't you call MS in the Netherlands? I have called MS in germany too!
Tried various MS phone numbers, but no luck:/ anyone have any luck getting a code? If anyone has a spare code

Why did you say you bought a german HD7?
Is it because the HD7 hasn't come out in austria yet?
When you typed in your new activation code, did you then use your own LIVE-id, or did you create a fake american one to get it to work?

I used a fake one, but i think you can use your real one.
They wont send people to you that kill you

Worked for me also! Best Method atm!!!!!!!!
In order to work successfully you need to create a live (hotmail) email and type a nice American name (LOL!) a fake US and US postal code (try on Google)...
This will make the email an authentic US mail! So Microsoft will never find your location via your email.
Stop being punks about it! Just be real and give your real information. It worked for me. There shouldn't be no reason to give false information, except that you bought a previous HD7 from a user and it's asking for a activation code<~ only false information there.

No, that was a rumor started by somebody who has been banned multiple times because hes a scammer. (afaik).
What do M$ say to you when you ring them?
If they say to ask your carrier just say that you've been on phone to them multiple times and they keep sending you to M$, others have said that and got key.
First time they asked for an IMEI number. the second time, then they asked for a phone number and when I gave them mine, they told me to contact M$ in my country...
and these calls cost A LOT for me...

If you can't call them in your own country call the US support through skype - it's free. A code generator would be warez, and therefor not allowed on xda. Microsoft made a release vaguely saying that they don't really care and will continue giving away free codes.
Tried e-mail 3 times with 3 different e-mails. they didn't gave me a code. I guess I'm out of luck or just stupid...
I sent another email now without making up lots of stories and now they want my phone number, device, and name. What should i answer?(I told them I have hd7)

I did my HD2 yesterday and have another one to do once i get another class 6 memory card. I telephoned the German MS support number and after explaining that i was english and couldnt reach the english support number (so could she speak english?) explained that both myself and my girlfriend have just bought HD7's, the damn things wouldnt work without a key for live services and that the sales assistant mentioned nothing of this.
I offered to give both telephone numbers and asked if the one key code would work for both, she replied that she didnt need any telephone details from me as it doesnt matter and that she would have to give me 2 codes as one wouldnt work for both units. she then asked me for my name (i told her my name was fred something or other) and she then asked for an email address (i gave a fresh one i made for the pourpose without my details) A couple of minutes later she had generated both keys and gave them to me over the telephone.
She was really nice and well mannered and the whole thing was a breeze.
Really guys believe me when i say M$ do not give a damn about what handset you have. Its not like they are losing anything by giving out the keys, if anything they are creating potential marketplace shoppers.
I have an HD7 also and upon comparison the only difference i can see is camera quality, the function and feel is identical.

you must be silly if you don't try the skype method and give up!!
- uses your wifi or 3g internet (so its practically free)
- calls are very clear (even clearer than a normal mobile call)
- masks your location (support guy only ask me if canada or us)
- no queue time
- call completed in less than 5 minutes
i called at CST 9am and only tried once
they did not ask for my phone number or imei, just full name and live id
writing down the 25 digit code can be a pain in the arse though if the support guy has a foreign accent (no racism intended), you will need to make sure you wrote it down correctly by repeating back to him, then thank him nicely and disconnect from Skype, enjoy your HD 7 phone
*HTC has a lot of free useful apps in the marketplace, I would suggest grabbing them asap after activation

Thats pretty much standard. I didn't lie to them. I gave them my name, email address and telephone number.
so should I give her my real name and phone and country even thought its not a US or UK number??
EDIT:done that...I hope i didnt make a mistake by telling her that i'm not from the us and my real phone number...

There's no keygen outside for WP7 but it's not necessary, because activate it is as easy as flashing WP7

In fact, nearly every country has a Microsoft central, and to call this central is much cheaper than calling in the USA, but there are much people who beg from other users for a key.
And most of them don't know, that also can search in google for their local MS phone number (or better if I say they are too lazy to do that), so I want to list the MS phone number for each country. (PM me if you have a country that I should add).
If you call such a number (Monday - Friday; 8am-6pm) only wait until someone picks up, don't dial anything. Just say you want to activate your HD7 and they maybe will refer you to another person. Wait... There you say again you want to activate your new HD7 and they will ask you for your name and your phone number. It must not be correct, they don't verify it, it's only for their database. Finished. They generate a new key for you and tell it to you. It's better if you write this key down, because it's too long to remember it ^.^.
The key has 20 digits or letters.
Sample (only random characters, no real key ^^):

Enter this key and you are available to sign into your Windows Live Account. Before you can download anything now, you have to make your phone think it's a HD7, there are several manuals, how you can do this, here is one good manual:

If you have done everything you are nearly finished, but there is one point you have to do. Open Zune on your computer and sign in with your Live ID (if you haven't done it already). Enter your country and other details and remember. If you enter a birthday younger than 18 years, to have to enter a second "parents" Live ID. If this step is finished you can download from the Marketplace on your phone and in Zune.

I've written the time, when the customer service is available => 8am-6pm.
And you don't have to choose an option when you call this number.
Call the number and don't dial anything... wait until someone picks up the phone!
i just rang, they bent over backwards to get me a key and put me straight through to generate me one. it all failed at the final hurdle though, apparently i need to call back in 72 as they have ran out of keys. darn. UK here.

I have also been advised to call back in 72 hours (UK Helpline).
Just to clarify, select options 2 and then 7 and this will transfer you to the correct department.

MS have a dedicated WP7 team in the UK, I've just managed to get my activation code from them, it did require an IMEI code.

Keygen won't be available for WP7 cause in the help center they create a random code and register it in their database. Only if they register a code, you can use it.

They have no interest on the phone that you are using!

lol, I think I'm gonna buy one more HD2(this time, I'll go and get it personally, AFTER I ensure that everything works) and when I install WP7 on that, I can try saying I have an iPhone or some BlackBerry. That would be REALLY funny.
Just to inform all Czech guys, in Czech Republic they are also giving codes without problem. Called, gave email and number and received code in about two minutes without any additional questions. Marketplace works without problem, but its impossible to buy apps, because microsoft probably only accepts cards issued in supported countries. Free aps and trials are working fine and it seems that the amount of apps is the same as in US market.

In Germany they have to ask if you mind the call being recorded or not, so I took the option to be recorded and made extra sure that I mentioned that I was in fact going to install it on an HD2. Keep my a** covered
I now have my activation code, which took about 3 mins to get. All he needed was my phone number, name and e-mail addy.

Seems like their official stance differs from one another, but mostly I think MS couldn't give a damn about us activating WP7 on a HD2

Oops. I noticed that I posted the wrong number, the one above will not work...
Correct number for Austria (maybe Germany and Switzerland too):

Do not press anything when asked so, just let the automated system run 3 times and you will get connected to an actual human person after that
EDIT: I just had the urge to call them again and get myself another code, so now I have one to give away ;-) If anyone cannot get a code himself (Don't be lazy, calling them takes about 3 minutes, just ask when it REALLY does not work), he can have mine!

today i called to a woman at MS Germany whit accent.
i told her that i buyed a htc hd7 by ebay, and i need a activation code
because windows live ask for it. the ms woman said, you have a htc phone?
no problem! she ask me for my name, phone number, and email adress,
and than she gave me the code.
whether hd2 or HD7 is not relevant. except that one has a HTC!!!
a small tip, used for Germany not the number 01805-672255
but 089 3176-0 which is cheaper.

YES, German hotline worked for me. There is a number somewhere in this forum, just search for it.

Did you gave them your real Croatian number and real name ? Or you gave them fake Germany phone number and fake name ?
I am also from Czech republic. I got the activation code from the MS chat.
As I wrote somewhere else:
First two attempts were unsuccessful - they told me that they can see that I am from Czech rep., so I need to call to CZ Microsoft. I did call, but CZ MS told me that the cannot generate the code. I call there twice to two different operators.
So I changed tactic: I have used VPN and tried the MS chat again. It took about 5 attempts to be connected with the right person - the first four told me, that I need to call to help line. But the last one, just asked me for full name and phone number (I gave some from US).

I gave them my real Croatian number. I plan to stay with WP7 (so I did not see the point in lying) and will soon switch to real HD7 anyway. The lady on the phone was exceptionaly nice, even waited on the line to make sure that thee code worked.
P.S. Of course, you must say you have a wp7 device, whichever one you choose (HD7, Samsung Omnia 7, etc). When she asked for the number I told her I was from Croatia, she said OK, and then I gave her my number.
I am one of those who will definitely not go back to Android, or wish to dual boot. Android is fine, but it is too customizable for me. I like this OS because it is FAST, easy to get to what I use the most (emails, sms, calls, people - in that order), easy to write on it, easy to use the calendar app for appointments, etc. Not to mention that WP7 hubs are beautiful to use and graphically far superior to anything else out there. MS is here to stay, you should see what updates are coming this year, whoa!!!
Which VPN , did you connect to some US network, how ?

OK, so I have activated my device. The only solution for Czech people is call to Germany customer helpdesk +49 / (0)89 / 3176-0. They need email address, mobile phone number and first name and sure name. The guys on the customer helpdesk are fine and it's strange but I got lot of fun with them.
I recommend this solution which is painless. Just to speak English or German.
I have my activation from Czech MS Hotline, so Germany isn't "only solution" for sure. I just told them that I need add my hotmail email account on WP7 phone and need activation code for this. Phone call time 60s and after about half hour I recieved my activation code by mail ... more painless for me

This is strange. How I wrote Czech Microsoft support technicians told me that they don't do that and I have to contact seller of my device. It happen quite a lot time that Czech Microsoft support technician didn't help me and I have to contact US support. The knowledge of Czech Microsoft support technician are quite poor.
I don't like Czech Microsoft support.
I wrote some mails with czech ms helpdesk....
