Hey,
I understand that the new 2.2 update is available for different locations but the US. I also understand that it's available for unbranded devices worldwide.
My questions is: is there a way to remove the branding so the phone will be considered as unbranded for HTC's update service/servers?
Thanks!

Because the Liberated Froyo is laggy and I'm sure the official Froyo Rom meant for the Aria isn't. I'm interested on unbranding my phone too.

Logically speaking, it would make sense that official froyo from would be laggier. This is my 2 cents: liberated froyo has a different kernel that allows overclocking, i'd be willing to guess/bet stock doesn't. Not only that but liberated froyo doesn't have all the gay bloatware and it's also not possible to root the stock froyo at the moment so you're abilities will be limited. I'm sure there are a lot more. If liberated froyo is laggy for you, it's operator error.

I can tell you from personal experience that the liberated Froyo is NOT laggy at all. Especially being overclocked

I've had liberated froyo since attn1 released it and I have had no issues what so ever.you shouldn't knock it till you try it.

Do you think AT&T will update the Aria, or let us extend our contracts 2 more years in order to get 2.2 on a different phone?

Not sure about it being laggy when being overclocked but it deffinitely is laggy running at 600mhz. If you don't believe me try to use the wide contacts widget or the scrolling messages widget on your Froyo ROM and then go back to liberated eclair and do exactly the same. There is a small difference, you have to swap your finger more in the Froyo ROM. Unlike it you just have to barely slide your finger a bit on eclair to move from one screen to another or scroll down.
It was smooth as butter clocked at 600 for me o.o

I am running Liberated FR008 with the HTC HK kernel (no over-clocking) and it is running smooth as butter, too. I will admit that I thought the original Liberated FR series based on the leaked Gratia ROM was laggy compared to 2.1, however FR008 is based on the shipping HTC Sense 2.2 for the Aria/Gratia and it is rock solid.

Is it really a different ROM basedfrom FR006 to FR008? I tried FR008 and it had the same sun widget bug than the leaked gratia ROM. However I did not tested deeper into that ROM so I can't tell if it isn't laggy as the FR006 series. Would you recomed it for me?

Personally I haven't noticed this 'sun' widget bug, so it must only be noticeable if you are looking for it specifically. Also when I flashed FR008, I was coming from CM 6.1.1, so I did the whole Wipe Data, Wipe Cache, Wipe Dalvik Cache before I flashed. If you flashed FR008 over FR006 and didn't do a full Wipe, that may have been the source of your sun widget findings. IMO if that was the first thing you saw in FR008 that made you stop, I think you may have been too quick in your decision.
I have found that FR008 and the HTC HK kernel run very well on the Aria and is probably the closest we will ever get to a true HTC Froyo release. If you like HTC Sense, then IMO FR008 is definitely worth taking another look at.

After FR006 I went back to Liberated Eclair. So I was comming from it when I tested FR008. The sun widget bug shouldn't be there if it is a new ROM. But what could I know? I didn't build it. I'm going to give it a new try today and I'll let you know how it went, is that okay?

Sounds good. I bit the bullet when I decided to give FR008 a real consideration and so I did a full wipe and had to setup and reinstall all of my apps. In the end I think it was well worth it.

I've been playing with FR008 all day. So far I've got a few random reboot on some widgets like contacts and friendstream. I don't understand why is that. Did that ever happen to you? You're right that it runs smooth but I do notice a little bit of lag there. The weather widget bug really annoys me though but it's not a dealbreaker.

I don't use the friendstream widget and on the contacts widget I only display my 'Family' group, so there aren't a lot of contacts to display.
The only 'issue' that has occurred more than once is a few times when I wake up and unlock my phone the weather widget will FC, but I have never had the phone just reboot while using it.
I also went ahead and flashed the HTC Hong Kong kernel since that is the most recent one for the Aria.

Let me get thsi straight: You're using Liberated FR008 with the Hong Kong Kernel? Why not just installing the Hong Kong update? I read that it will update the kernel automatically. What's FC? I'm thinking it must be Force Closed? or maybe freezed

1. If you install the official HTC Hong Kong update on an Aria, you will loose root because it will update HBOOT to version 1.x and as of now there is no way to get root access back.
2. FC = Forced Closed. It is a little annoying, but it doesn't cause a lockup or force me to reboot the machine, so it is no big deal.
Liberated FR008 allows you to use either the custom kernel based on CM which provides some nice enhancements such as Overclocking, Trackball wake, ext4 enabled, etc or the latest official HTC Kernel that was extracted from the HK update. I started with the custom kernel but was curious about how the 'official' HTC Froyo solution would run on the Aria, so I flashed it and have been running it since the first of the year.

The custom kernel that FR008 is deployed with offers the best options in terms of performance (over-clocking) and features (trackball wake, ext4 support, etc.) IMO.
I use my Aria for business, so phone, email, calendar, texting, maps/directions, and wifi tethering when I'm on the road. I don't play games or listen to music on it or typically have 4 or 5 apps opened at the same time, so I haven't really found a need to over-clock the thing. For the way I use the phone day to day, the HK kernel runs just fine.

I'm tired of my phone being too slow, responding too slow to touch, lagging..
I have the android 2.1 OS on my HTC Hero CDMA and I was wondering if there were any general recommendations to speed up my phone.
I would be willing to put on a hacked OS, root it, or do whatever it takes as long as the phone is still fully functional. I'm pretty new with this stuff so bear with me.

I rooted, installed CM6, my phone was totally transformed.
Cm 6 - rc1 is a good start simply amazing going from stock. I get 0 lag. I must warn you always do a nandroid back up before changing ROMs. Its basically a clone of your phone's software and settings allowing you to recover from a bad issue.

+1 to all previous posts.
The Hero running out of the box stock with Sense is really pretty slow. I liked Sense, but I like a faster device better.
Follow the well documented instructions found on this site for rooting the Hero and then play around with different ROMs until you find one that fits you.
Personally I've been running Darchdroid and don't plan on ever switching again.
I don't even know what lag is any more.
Thank you for your responses.
Is there a link for a tutorial or forum topic about where to download CM6 and how to install it?
Thanks.

I got CM6 on there now, and it is much faster.

Thanks.

The problem with installing something like CM is that those ROMs are missing a lot of the stuff that you are used to using. And you might spend a long time downloading, and looking for the apps you need. I found CM to be not much faster and a pain in the ass in some ways (the dialer is weak, same with the keyboard, etc.)
I know people are going to start pointing to all the apps you can download to replace what is there, but it's a pain, and time consuming.
If anything I would try one of Fresh's ROMs, which have Sense and most of the HTC apps. And his Toast versions allow for overclocking as well.
On another note, your Hero should not be slow. Have you tried a factory reset?? I have used slow Heros before, but when they are working properly there should be almost no lag with the stock 2.1 OS.
The kernel is under the thread cdma android development and as far as cm6 u can overclock as well with a different kernel and as for aosp vs sense its just user preference tryem both c which one u like best and stick with what works for u that's what there here for both are outstanding

That's the beautiful thing about CM6 though is the customization. I know its personal choice, but I actually love the CM6 Phone Dialer (one of the guys over on the theme board customized the background for in call to be a nice cyan color other than green) and like the AOSP keyboard moreso than the Sense Keyboard. You can however, install a variety of HTC_IME keyboards and get that same Sense functionality on CM6.
I only do a new nightly every few days and it might take me... 10 minutes or so to get my phone setup. That includes a Full Wipe, ROM Flash, Kernel Flash, Circle Battery Flash and now a Phone Dialer Flash. I connect to my wifi and the Market downloads all of my apps for me and I restore my settings with ADW Backups. Logging into an app every now and then doesn't bother me after I've flashed a new ROM.
This is an "to each his own" situation and I did use FreshROM for quite some time before making the switch. To me, I don't plan on looking back. I may be switching to the T-Mobile G2 when it's released and as soon as CM is made available for it I'll be rooted and running it in no time.

How do you get the market to automatically download your apps? Is it another app or backup? It won't even save all of the apps I had downloaded last time. It only seems to save around 8.

I had reserves as well, but I rooted to FR008 ROM and haven't had a single problem. Been running it for around a month now.

CM is lighter than sense, smaller footprint, generally very responsive. You do give up a lot of eye candy relative to sense, CM in comparison just looks unpolished. Of course polish is not its purpose. You can get a lot of the eye candy back with Launcher Pro + Fancy Widgets Pro + other free stuff on the market. Plus you get some nice features with LP. In fact right now I run FR008 with LP as the default launcher.
Why not just switch to CM? The biggest issue for me with CM is the total lack of ability to sync desktop Outlook without your data ending up on Google's servers. As best as I can tell there is no 3rd party app, paid or free, that will let you do that. The basic problem seems to be that stock Android will not allow calendars that are not synced to the cloud but still visible to the OS. HTC's version of Android does that, and does it well. So I am sticking with Sense for the moment, despite a few drawbacks.
Rooted mine yesterday finally and flashed liberated fr008 Rom w/ sense. Seemed to be a lot faster than original 2.1 for a few hours but now everything lags and incredible amount and battery is about half as efficient than 2.1. I also noticed my apps such as HTC music player and email are constantly running in the background even right after I kill them they will restart immediately. Do not really want to flash a whole new Rom w/out sense already since I just finished this one. I did not use Hong Kong kernel because I have no clue how to... wondering if that is the reason this is happening. This is my first time ever modding a phone of any kind. Does anyone else have this issue?

P.S Hi new to forum
I would pick a nice 2.1 rom and wait for official Froyo to launch. There are some bugs with DK28 that are annoying as hell when they occur. None of the things that DK28 fixes are absolutely necessary, such as the much improved GPS. GPS still functions on 2.1, just not nearly as well as on Froyo.

I ran syndicaterom for a while. It was very stable and nice. You can also pick a kernel to use in conjunction with whatever rom you use. Stock kernel is very stable obviously, but if you have concerns about battery life or something like that, or feel a need to overclock, there are kernels available that offer that. SyndiateRom comes with the Xtreme kernel if you flash the "Full" release, if I am remembering correctly. It is a very good all around kernel, although Phoenix 1.43 was always the best with regards to battery life for me.

Odin to dk28, one click root, then install bonsai rom and optionally install a theme.
With this setup my GPS works better than it has for any other phone (lock in 5-10 seconds). Flash works, and the system flies. Not many cons that I'm aware of.

Mine is spot on....running EXT4 and custom ROM
If you want working GPS and Flash support in the browser go with a leaked DK28 ROM (ViperROM w/ EXT4 is my personal favorite). GPS is better than ever on Froyo - it actually works now! Extremely well at that... There is a process for going to DK28 and making the GPS happy, as long as you follow that process you'll be in great shape. I really can't think of a reason to be on DI18, unless you need to go into a Sprint store for some reason.

Still overwhelmed, but I like your site's instructions, very thorough, thumbs up for that tip, I still am on stock rooted, but one of these days....at least this site is thorough...
I agree 2.2 is the way to go. The most of the problems on froyo can be pinpointed to a problem installing it. I've flashed froyo plenty of times and if you can get the gps steps down everything should be just fine. if your staying on eclair the overclocked syndicate rom is a beast.

I vote 2.2, I have it and haven't looked back. Its luck of the draw. Some get more bugs then others. I lucked out I guess.
Another vote for 2.2 here. My ROM recommendation is Quantum, it's well-supported and its developer is on top of his game. Some other ROMs include a lot of... gimmicks. Yeah, we'll go with gimmicks. (It slices, it dices, it automagically makes your internets faster!)
In any case, there's no real reason for Android 2.1. The leaked FroYo is stable at this point. If you're getting force closes then it probably means something went wrong during flash. If you can follow instructions then it's not difficult.
htc flash hero to Android 3.2 Ginger Bread or prefer to Android 2.2 Froyo
I wanted to ask how it is flashed to Android 2.3.Denn as I can read it here it is indeed the rom, but it is generally weak for the Hero? Or rather 2.2 flashed? For I bröchte already a rom, the but also in German
I still have Froyd Villain Rom but I read a lot of good about the 2.3 roms and I am waiting to change over as soon as the RC are done and Elelinux puts out a definite version of his rom(or Cyanogen).
For the german part, I decided for myself to go with english because it is easier to find as it is standart on the roms and it is also easier to describe with the english words when I have problems (also the descriptions use the english terms). As far as I know in most roms you can chose the language and it should work without problems...
but how do I braid at all? because I have 2.1 on it yet
I am not sure what you mean by braid, but if you mean root, than here you go:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4257045
The roms can be downloaded here in the forums and then just flash them as indicated.
pigtail I mean how can I flashed it?
I'm using latest version of Elelinux-7.0.0-RC1-Hero-v0.9 and it's running good so far
Will check GPS connectivity tonight on the way from the office

Here you find all the information you are looking for. That helped me alot when I started flashing
BTW: I just found this in this very forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645253. I ll leave the other link in too (I hope thats ok) but you should find everything you are looking for in these guides.
I'm still on froyo but with a gingerbread theme. I'll probably wait until cm7 is final.

I think I'd very much prefer 2.3 Gingerbread
Will probably flash CM7 tonight just to check out... hopefully it will become final SOON ^^
BTW, I'm new on the forum
I prefer gingerbread using cm7 nightlies atm
I'm on the cm7 nighties too. The default keyboard alone makes 2.3 worthwhile!
First time ROM user....
I was at a loose end yesterday and ended up using ROM manager to install Elelinux 7.0.0 version of Gingerbread on my GSM HTC Hero, TMobile branded G2. I have been messing about with root and launcher pro/ADW for ages and was getting really bored with my Hero, too slow for lots of apps, too old etc. This ROM has given it a new lease of life and lots to play with. I haven't fully worked out what's what etc and am loathe to fill it up with lots of personalised settings and apps because I might well find myself flashing another ROM before long. Thanks be to Google for storing most of my stuff in 'the cloud' and making me NEVER have to lose my contacts again.
I am impressed with this ROM, no crashes, fast and efficient. Only a bit of graphics lag on swiping across screens.
Also, does anyone know why there is no pinch on homescreen to show miniature versions of the screens?
Thanks,
Hamish
Try putting two fingers in opposite corners of the screen and slide them to the center

I think Froyo is probably the fastest on Hero from what I've heard and personally experienced with a mix of Ele CM6.2 Speed, and Ele/Cronos Gingerbread builds.
The difference though, especially with Ele 1.1.1 for me at least who doesn't really have the animations and runs at 691MHz isn't enough for me to want extra speed by downgrading to 2.2. I'm happy enough eating some gingerbread everyday now, although it took a while!
Since my last post I realised that I was on 0.9. I then tried froyd villain but got scared. I now have 1.1.1 and it's great. One problem is the gps losing it's fix. Any ideas on how to fix?
I LOVE the new photo gallery and the camera seems better too.

There's a fix on post (change gps libs from CM7 nightlies..)
Perdita2000
I put gingerbread 2.3 on my hero and it was so much better for a while.
But now for some reason it has started to run a bit slow not loading the home screen. I have not able to figure out why yet.
Do not want to go back to 2.2 now.
Launcher pro does not seem to like gingerbread for some reason. keeps force closing.
Still learning android an dhow to troubleshoot and optimize.
with Gingerbread leaked for the DX and root coming tomorrow, how long do you think it'll take before we see some gingerbread ROMs on our phones?

Gingerbread is pretty awesome as it is. I just ignore the CrapWare

I agree, but with root... Root. Freeze bloat. Enjoy.
Depends on how much other stuff the devs have going on. I'd guess about a 2-4 weeks.
I mean, it was just leaked a day or two ago, it's going to take a bit of time.
I hope they come out. The bloatware sucks. LPP FC's for me so I have to use the stock launcher. Moto's gingerbread 'skin' seems weak and unfinished (hence leak I guess).
Love the performance boosts though. Cannot wait to root. I've given up hope for an AOSP DX rom though (Froyo or Gbread).

LPP works flawlessly for me, have you tried the usual thing? Clearing dalvik cache & system cache?
You're not gonna get a *true* ASOP ROM due to the locked bootloader...which is why CyanogenMod isn't on the DX or D2.
For anyone contemplating updating, DO IT.. This release is extremely substantial...now that I have the rooted gingerbread and have debloated / deblurred / made build.prop changes, I will never again use a froyo rom.. I will happily wait for the custom gingers to come out
This is a substantial release I would say even more significant then going from the original 2.1 to 2.2 was

if you have a stock deblured version of this 2.3 build than you should release it

If he has it all set up his accounts would be on the nandroid that would be created. All you have to do i delete the bloat files with root explorer takes like 10 minutes.
one thing i really want is the screen off animation..i dk y just makes it feel complete
edit did some research its super easy to enable. Just gotta change a true to false in bools.xlm looks sweet =)
Jrummy had a new version of liberty 98% finished last friday then he got hurt landed in the hospital and the news hit about the gb leak, and he held off on release my guess is hes close to gb Liberty!
Beamed from my Gingerbreaded DroidXtreme
i definitely recommend upgrading. this release is great.
Yeah, but I want to wait untill there is a boot strappable ROM, and a very simple root process, like the one touch z4root. Tell me when THOSE come out! lol
