i dont think this has been posted if so let me know and i will retract this.It is just i think the quickest way to get to a new rom while flashing back to stock first.

alrite as usual you should have already backed up all your apps, have your new rom on your internal sd card, and odin up and ready before this.Alright so here it is i have 3 button combo working on mine if you dont use adb i guess.
Pull battery insert battery hold volume up and down and put in cable from computer to phone download mode.It should pop up press start on odin. Now wait for it to say reset then wait for the boot animation of the signal bars right when those pop up before the sound even. Now pull battery insert battery hold up down and power button untill att pops up twice.Then select reinstall packages (this is if you already have the update.zip on your sd card for cwm if not dont bother) it will reinstall clockwork mod recovery (sometimes you have to push reinstall packages twice it just depends). Almost done now just do as normal install zip from sd card select the rom of your choice and then yes(install whatever rom your wanting to flash ) then bam your done no needing oneclick root dl rom manager instal cwm from there no need to even look at it...
and there you go done in 10 min i do this everytime and have never had any issues EVER im just trying to make flashing a new rom quick and easy and id love to hear your feed back

I agree. Some capitalization and punctuation would go a long way. Also, if speed is your goal then just drop the ROM zip on the sdcard, boot to recovery and install it.

im talking about speed and the rom actually booting. I have done it that way a few times and most of those times at get failure at line watever update aborted this way has worked for me 99.99999999999999999999999999% of the time

@ avgjoe This is about it. But I would add one suggestion which will help out a ton with Odin.
[*] Ensure you have a good usb cable. Make sure to wiggle the cable. If the the phone loose connection to the pc while wiggling cable save your self 20 minutes and get a good cable.
I have 5 cables. Best to worse...
- 1 BlackBerry Cable ***** Best for me. I trust it. No connection loss
- 1 Stock Jabra Cable **** Worked good for me. No connection loss
- 1 Ericson Cable shaved *** Tight fit. No connection loss
- 2 Samsung stock cables* What was Samsung thinking
This is my experience. I remember the first time I flashed my Captivate. I felt sick and I blame it on my cable. I barely touched my phone and I heard the beep-beep from my pc when it detected the USB was detached and re-attached. Atleast bricking a Captivate is better than bricking a Tilt2.
An even faster ROM upgrade guide:
-Boot into CWM
-Wipe data and cache
-Install ROM zip from SD
If that fails, try again or:
-Odin one-click (or Odin to JH7 for certain batch 1010 Captivates)
-Enable debugging and sideload z4root. Permanent root.
-Install CWM using ROM Manager or manually with the update.zip
-Follow three steps above this section.
There is usually no need to go back to stock between flashes (and there are more serious risks [soft-brick, hard-brick, damaged bootloader] from a bad Odin flash than from a bad CWM install [fc's, stuck at boot logo]). Wiping your data and cache partitions (and making sure you disabled lagfix if not supported by the new ROM) should be sufficient.

It's a rather easy process, done it like 3 already. What I hate about going back to stock using Odin is that I always have to this:
Enable USB Debugging
Root the phone
Log in so I can use the market.
Download Rom Manager, Install CWM
Reboot to stock recover.
Apply package
Apply package again.
Install new rom
I wouldn't mind but the whole process until you are finally able to install the new rom takes at least 10 minutes of tapping and typing. It's rather annoying. I'm not complaining though...

you never have to log into your JF6 stock rom if you odin back to stock. you dont even have to boot to it. just keep the update.zip from CWM on your sdcard and boot into recovery...reinstall packages, and you are in CWM..flash your ROM, and enjoy
Nobody master clears anymore?? I do, and never have a single issue or FC. It just takes an extra five minutes to do the MC and then let the phone boot and transfer ROM of choise as well as update.zip for CW recovery to the root of my sd. But master clear is the same as a reset or a data wipe, so its not completely necessary. Just makes me feel safer!

nope. i never do any more. sometimes i have to flash back to stock, when i have a broken flash, but i still dont master clear. you dont actually gain anything by master clear, since it just wipes your internal sd...

you can skip that step by simple "recycling/reusing" the recovery-update.zip from CWM. Download it once and then save it on your external sd and your pc.
When you want to use another ROM you can reuse the recovery-update.zip .
Just rename it update.zip and then reboot recovery and then do you thing.....

I've heard it's a bad idea to install kernels without first allowing the phone to fully boot. I've never tried it myself, I just convert to rfs without any backup or restore (using the ULF included in hardcore's Speedmod kernel) before flashing.

This is a stupid question (two actually). I think the answer is YES, but I'd like to make sure...
I've installed several ROMs by the "standard process."
Is the "update.zip" on my internal SD card the one that has cwm?
Does running "reinstall packages" from stock recovery just apply the "update.zip"?

My vibrant is running stock 2.2 Froyo. Lately, it dies silently and so frequently in sleep that I can't rely on it for every day usage. I've missed many important calls. So I am trying prepare my phone to flash another ROM. First, I got the phone rooted no problem at all.
Then the first problem I have is with the ROM manager. I purchased the Premium Version 3.0.1.3 and flashed the latest ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.1.2. Upon rebooting into Recovery, there is, however, no Nandroid backup, just the normal menu shows up with
Samsung Recovery Utils -for BML-
.reboot now
.reinstall packages
.delete all user data
.delete cache data
.format internal sd card
I remove update.zip on the phone and on the sd card and retried and retried without success. Why don't I have Nandroid backup showing up to save the phone before flashing new ROM?
The second problem is with the Titanium Backup. I downloaded the free version and it works fine and could get root privilege without problem. Then I purchased the donated version and followed the instruction to uninstall the app and reinstall it to get the upgrade through the license file. The license file is read correctly and the upgrade version acknowledges that. However, Titanium Backup paid version now fails to get root privilege. I verify that other apps can get root without problem. I've searched all over yesterday and it seems that few people have the same problem getting root with the upgraded version, but no one has offered a solution.
So here I am paying but not able to backup the phone to start flashing anything. Could someone enlighten me about what I did wrong here?

For recovery, just select reinstall packages. Sometimes you have to do it twice.
For titanium backup, click the problems button to get the latest busybox.
You should be good after that.

I have the same set-up and I have the same issue. I've selecting reinstall packages several times. Did not work. I tried different, methods: using Rom Manager and AIO Vibrant Toolbox. Didn't work. At first it said said it wasn't signed, and I four a fix for that. Now It loads and says replacing stock recovery with Clockwork... but boots back into the stock one. Is there anything else I can do?

+1 Both Off duty and birgertime are correct. Most of the new roms will delete all things for you unless they say to do something particular (like some of the EDT roms) you should be ok, we are here to help if you run into further problems
If hitting "reinstall packages" don't take you to the clockwork recovery, also you can just reinstall the recovery thru rom manager.
Then once you reboot and if it don't take you to clockwork recovery, then hit reinstall packages again. Ya should get to it the second time.
I had this issue a lot when first rooted the phone and installed clockwork recovery.
Sometimes it will even boot halfway into stock recovery then quickly reboot itself into clockwork.
Also, just make sure that there is only ONE update.zip in there. So delete the update.zip using "my files" then open Rom Manager and choose install clockwork recovery. That way you are sure there is only one update.zip there then try the previous mentioned methods
Thanks for your advice. I still have problem with selecting "reinstall packages" in the Recovery menu. If I select that, it says:

Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
This repeats if I keep selecting "reinstall packages" again. My SD card is still the original 2GB card that comes with the phone. It still has plenty of space.

FWIW, I upgraded BusyBox and could solve the Titanium Backup problem. However, still can not do a nandroid backup as mentioned above, even with the donated version. So I abandoned my plan to flash another ROM and stay with the rooted stock.
However, what a difference it makes when I replace the 2GB SD card that came with the Vibrant with a 16GB SD card class 10. The unit comes up faster, the UI is no longer sluggish as before. I hope that this was the issue that caused my Vibrant to die in sleep. I need to phone for daily use and don't have a lot of time to muck around with it. Maybe next year when I have another phone to use as main phone, then I can take some risk to flash without nandroid backup. For now I hope that it no longer dies in sleep. Thanks for all your help.
Just a quick note to end this thread.
Since I have plenty of disk space on the internal memory, I removed the SD which I don't need and the phone seems to become reasonably fast responsive with rooted stock 2.2. It's now quite usable for me so I have no more need to flash it with another ROM. People who complain about slowness of their stock 2.2 ROM should try to remove the SD card first.

I'm having trouble with my samsung vibrant (galaxy S) I want to flash CM on it. I have root access, Clockwork Mod recovery, and ROM Manager. I go in to ROM manager and select flash ROM from SD card, I select the CM ROM which I downloaded but it gives an error "Status 7" when trying to install, and will not flash the new ROM. Any help with this would be appreciated.
ok first go into clockwork recovery on rom manager and pick flash clockwork recovery and pick vibrantmtd then pick 3x NOT 2X! Then go to download rom and choose cm7 nightlie 8 or under as above have many probs. On ur nightlie choose all three! wipe data, wipe dalvik and backup rom. On ur second nightlie u just have to wipe dalvik and backup rom.
Thanks for the help. I tried that with a slight variation. I had to manually put the ROM on the root of the SD card and named it update.zip. I flashed clockwork recovery and selected 3.x as you said. I selected all 3 options for backup and wipe. Once in recovery I select "Reinstall packages" and it finds update.zip but aborts installation with "Status 7"
Ur doing it wrong. Update package is for only rooting ur phone.

the phone is rooted. Is there an easy way for me to double check that? Maybe I'm confusing two processes, but I do have the ROM on the SD card. Am I trying to apply it incorrectly? When I'm in recovery my only options are:
Reboot system now
reinstall packages
delete all user data
delete cache data
format internal SD-card
I'm used to see other option such as on my MT4G which has "install zip from SD card" That is what I typically use to flash a new rom.

I've been messing with it all night. I wound up doing the ODIN to JFD to get myself back to 2.1. I installed rom manager again, and it appears that when I tell it to flash clockwork mod and then reboot in to recovery I am actually going to stock recovery. I think the options that I listed earlier are for stock recovery as well. I think the main thing I'm missing is the "Install ZIP from SD Card" option in recovery. I guess at this point I'm unsure if I'm rooted, and don't know how to get the correct recovery so I can flash the ROM I'd like.
If ur recovery is blue then u need reinstall packages twice then u will be rooted, then it will turn green. Then go into rom manager and flash clock work recovery. Then put ur rom on internal sd and ur ready to flash. Enjoy

Ok, so we can narrow things down a bit. My recovery is blue. I've downloaded the update.zip that I found from "NOOB Root guide" here on XDA, but no matter how many times I reinstall packages recovery never turns green.
I've also tried the one click root method which does the same thing as above but it just automates things a bit. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739300)

ok is ur phone hardware locked?? by checking by doing this do the 3 button combo to get into download mode. First power off ur phone then plug in ur usb cable to phone and into pc then hold down the up volume and down volume and THEN hold down the power button and let go after a few sec u should see download mode.. If it goes into download mode then ur phone is not hardware lcked and we can go from there if it is hardware locked? then follow this link

if it isnt hardware locked then make sure update package file isnt corrrupted and make sure u put it on ur internal sd card. Make sure the update package is 632 kb sometimes when downloading stuff happens.
im gonna tell u how i do root and flash! First odin back to eclair must easier to root then. Second put the update package on ur internal sd card and dont unrar it leave it as is. Then turn off ur phone and hold down the up volume and the down volume and THEN the power button and as when u SEE THE vibrant logo let go of power button. Ur recovery will be blue then select reinstall package and select yes, it will then go through stuff and come back to recovery blue then do it again and it will turn green. Once its green then select the rom u want to flash and ur ready to go.
Thanks again. From your instructions I can tell that the phone is hardware UNlocked. I've previously gotten in to download mode. also, I see some differences in how you describe the root process. The update.zip is 633kb, I'll try to redownload it again... also, when I hit reinstall packages I am not prompted with yes/no, it just does it. It is a very quick process, and then it auto reboots the phone, but you said it should bring me back to recovery. I'm not sure why that would be happening
I'll mess around with this some more tonight. Hopefully I can nail this down. Sorry to be a PITA.

Try Superoneclick root! That always works for me. When u reinstall packages and it reboots, clockwork usually has NOT been installed, I always Odin then install Tom Manager, flash Clockwork, then its off to the races!

I've been going over the suggestions all night. I feel like I'm following the instructions... not that they are even that difficult. I get the update.zip on my sd card, I boot in to stock recovery (blue) I reinstall packages, the phone reboots in to normal boot mode, I reboot in to recovery and reinstall packages again. I repeat this process multiple times hoping that one of these times I'm going to see a green recovery. I know it's all smooth sailing from there. I even recorded a short clip of me doing this.

Is it possible that i've tried so many different way of doing this that I have the phone in a weird state, and now these guides aren't working due to those previous attempts? I tried super1click... wound up getting an error "Getting mount path" ... "failed"
A simple way to check for root would be to download Terminal Emulator from the market and type in "su" without the quotations. If you get $ or permission denied you are not rooted. If you get a super user prompt followed by a # you should have root. Also which rom are you on now? If you are on stock Kb5 the recovery could be giving you some issues trying to flash the CWM recovery or at least for me it did. I suggest using ODIN to go back to JFD, then using super one click root (make sure your screen is set to not go off for the 10 or 30 minute time frame) I suggest this because I have had the "failure to mount" issues many times and it only seems to happen if my phone screen goes off while attempting the root. Once super one click completes, reboot your phone, install Rom manager, then reboot into recovery. You will have to select re install packages from there. The clockwork screen will be green as a few others have stated. I have attached an image below of clockwork, mine is orange since it's cm7 but yours will look similar,but green. From here just choose install from zip sd card, choose zip and flash away. Best of luck to you!

Is there something that removes the root access when you reboot the phone? I flashed the recovery for Galaxy S Vibrant (NOT Vibrant MTD) and was able to get to CWR (green), but sometimes when I go in to recovery it is back to blue... if I reinstall packages it takes me to green. Along those same lines I notice SU keeps asking me if the same application can have SuperUser permissions, so it seems like something is not sticking.
are you on 2.1 or 2.2? if you'r on 2.2 and use the update.zip it wont work you have to use superoneclick root ,happened to me too.

I thought it might help if I shared how I installed Cyanogenmod 7.1, highlighting the issues I overcame.
Rooting the phone using Odin and insecure ROM was easy.
I tried to use the RomManager app to flash ClockworkModRecovery. I rebooted into ClockworkModRecovery and then attempted to install the Cyanogenmod 7.1 zip I had downloaded and copied to the SDCard. I got errors like "Invalid whole-file signature"
I then used Odin to flash GT-I9100_ClockworkMod-Recovery_4.0.0.2.tar. There is a guide that mentions using this, although I did not actually find a guide at the time.
I rebooted into ClockworkModRecovery and then I deleted the cache and Dalvik cache, next a Factory reset. Then I attempted to install the Cyanogenmod 7.1 zip. This time, it seemed to install far too quickly. I rebooted and sure enough it failed to boot.
When I rebooted into ClockworkModRecovery I found it had been upgraded from 4.0.0.2 to 5.2.6 or something. I attempted to install the Cyanogenmod 7.1 zip again. A proper installation bar appeared. I also installed the Google apps zip.
I rebooted. Finally Cyanogenmod loaded normally.
I used Titaniumbackup to restore everything. Cyanogenmod then became unstable with crashes in Android core components.
I decided to revert to stock rom to save my contacts etc. and tried to install it using Odin. It would not boot. (I tried several times)
I reflashed Cyanogenmod again and found a way to extract my contacts from the Kies backup file to get them on to the phone. I lost some but never mind.
I had problems with the market - it would not download some of my apps (saved in my Google profile). I kept deleting the market cache over and over and gradually it allowed me to (re)install my apps.
I had problems with the phone shutting down when showing 66% power, so I recalibrated the battery which seemed to resolve it.
I've now replaced the ADW launcher with Zeam, dialler with DiallerOne, sms messager with Go SMS Pro, keyboard with Go Keyboard, browser with Dolphin Browser HD. Installed AdAway ad blocker, Droidtools, MyPhoneExplorer client. I turned off the lock screen as I just want to use the old pattern unlock one.
Finally, Cyanogenmod rules. But it has to rule since it looks like I cannot go back to stock roms with Odin any more.
Why cant u go back?
I installed cyanogen today
(a must is to back up your original data - so if you make a mistake, you can revert back to it)
i rooted with a insecure kernal, but this did not have cwm 'which lead to hours of wasted time', so i re flashed with a CF-Root kernal
(this did the trick with that verify whole life error)
(AFTER ROOT)
1. enter cwm (by holding the volume up, home key + ON key) make sure phone is off
2.wipe data/factory reset
3.wipe cache partition
install (/cyanogen/whatever) zip (internal) sd card
(that really stuffed me up, i was stuck in boot loop because i was using my external sd card) *make sure to save the file to the root of your internal sd card beforehand*
reboot
4. get depressed that your phone interface looks cheap, your camera doesnt work properly, you wonder where your external sd card files are, your favourite videos dont play etc, lol
I tried a few times reflashing stock Samsung ROM with Odin, but phone got stuck in booting.
Flashing a replacement kernel eg. Siyahkernel seems to be ok.

I didn't have these issues. Camera is fine for me, sd card works alright. Don't know about videos - haven't tried. As for interface, you can change the launcher to what you like. I use Zeam as it uses minimal memory.
You didn't follow the instructions. Could have saved you some time.

It also says to flash twice.
And another rule is to not use backups made on a stock rom.
samsung android is no real android. ;-)
If only I'd done the Nandroid backup of the Samsung ROM.
Never mind. I like Cyanogenmod much better than the Samsung firmware anyway.

So actually where am I supposed to copy the files, in the external sd or internal sd ??
Because on all tutorials and HowTo's it just says copy to sd card

SD card is the SD card not the one that the phone might not have as its an extra for some .

the reason why stockflashed firmware wont boot!!!!
the reason that the firmware that you flashed wont boot and goes into a bootloop is because you have to press upp button home button and power button so u can get into the stockCWM... do a factory reset and clear cashe from there and you will boot fine in stock rom just wait 2-4 minutes ! ut takes some time i know !
My Vibrant (which is not rooted at all, its 2.2) is not starting up properly. When I start it up, it makes it past the S logo and it only shows the notification bar (which has the time, battery status, etc.) at the top which doesn't go down when I pull it down. Everything on the screen under the bar is just blank black and every 10 seconds it all goes blank and the notification bar reappears again and that's all.
I've tried taking out the battery and restarting several times. I've also held down the 2 Volume (up & down) keys while holding down Power and entered the recovery menu thing which has some options for me. I see: reboot system now / reinstall packages / delete all user data / delete cache data / format internal sd-card
What is wrong with my phone and what do I do?
Any answers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've seen Odin around here a lot, but I'm not fully aware of it. Would it be helpful in my case?
Will it delete all my data from my phone or just the apps? If so, is there any way I can fix my phone without deleting my photos, videos, music, etc. I don't care if some apps get lost but I want my media.
Odin will delete your apps but it will not lose your Photos, Videos, Music, any of that stuff. It resets your phone to stock state (2.1 eclair) and doesn't touch the internal SD (unless you tick Masterwipe-so don't do that).
I posted this in another thread but it'll do for you too.
Go to the Dev section and download tha AIO Toolbox (Stickied at the top). It has the Odin v1.8 (I think), all the drivers and pit/tar files that you need to get back to stock 2.1 and then you can download CWR from my signature, find a ROM.zip that you want to install and put them on your Internal SD card.
Make sure you put the ROM in a folder and also make sure that the CWR that you get from my sig is on your internal and is the only thing on it labeled Update.zip. Once those are done, boot into recovery, scroll down to "Reinstall PAckages" and hit it. Let it cycle through and you might have to do it again. Once it cycles through your recovery will go from Blue (stock) to Green (CWR) from there, you can flash your ROM and profit. [If you are going to an ICS flavor, you may have to be on GB bootloaders and flash CM7 as an intermitant step. I suggest trying Moped_Ryder's ROM and Fishman's Bionix Mod-both 2.2 but quality and everything works.]
The toolbox is a valuable thing and you can do many things with it, but mainly and most importantly, it HAS the files to get you back to TMo 2.1. (I use it all the time and I am not even a TMo customer).
One thing you could try before going the Odin route that Woodrube mentioned(which sounds like what you're going to have to end up doing anyway) is find a CWR (Clockwork Recovery) zip file that you can install. You can find them somewhere on XDA if you do some searching; should be a little under 2 megs.
If your status bar comes up, even briefly, are you able to mount your phone on your PC and copy a file over? If you can, I'd say try putting that CWR zip file (renamed to update.zip) on your internal SD (where everything else is) and in the recovery you can get to now do "reinstall packages".
It'll load up CWR (you may have to do that "reinstall packages" twice), and you can do a couple of last ditch efforts. Wipe the cache, go to advanced and wipe the dalvick cache, and then fix the permissions.
You don't have to be root to do that, and while a long shot it may at least get you back to workable. But even if you do you should still backup your apps and goodies in preparation to Odin back to stock and format everything. I'm a big fan of clean wipes when things get all quirky like that.
Why don't you just root it while you at it its makes life easier lol

I would recommend trying out a custom rom if you are going to Odin anyway. I had numerous issues with Samsung's software. You can Odin flash quite a few custom roms as well.

For the last couple of days I've been trying to flash my Galaxy S with ICS333 using the following guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25722239#post25722239

When the phone has booted into the ROM and you see the wizard screen just enter download mode again, plug your phone into the PC, open Odin, press PDA button and browse for the CF-Root kernel, press START button and wait for it to finish.After the phone reboots disconnect it from the PC, let it boot and when you`re in the ROM, set your phone to mass storage mode from settings>wireless & network>usb settings and plug your phone into the PC, copy the ICS333 ROM to your internal SD root location, assuming you have downloaded it from here : http://goo.gl/LuXvH and disconnect from PC.
5. Enter CWM, Wipe Data/Factory Reset, Wipe Cache, Wipe Dalvik Cache and flash the ROM.You will notice the phone will reboot immediately because it will switch kernels, from CF-Root to Semaphore, prior to flashing the actual ROM.As a result, it will boot loop or get stuck on Semaphore logo, so just force it into CWM using the 3 key combo (no need to take the battery out).Now flash the rom again and wait till it`s finished and > Reboot to system!."

After performing stage 3 I waited for the phone to restart and understand that I should have seen a ROM/Wizard appear. This did not happen and now the phone just goes straight into CWM upon boot.
Whilst in CWM I get the error E:Can't mount /sdcard/ and non of the functions work. What should I do next? I've had a search around these and other forums but can't work out what to do. Don't want to just keep trying random things and end up making the situation worse.

get back into download mode to flash a rescue kit or a JVU upgrade from My Android Collections also tick update bootloader
But First power down, pull out Battery, SIM CARD, and EXT SD card, press power button for a minute , than power up without SIM and Ext SD Card...make sure you have more than 50% battery charge before you attempt any sort of flashing

One last thing before I go ahead and try flashing ICS again. Can I go straight from darkyrom to ICS or do I need to put a Gingerbread installation on the device first?

Sorry to be a bother again but I now have a new problem. I have updated to CM 9 android version 4.0.4 which appears to function correctly but gives me no access to the sim card (can't see any phone numbers/contacts and won't connect to the network).
I understand that this usually has something to do with EFS settings (I took a backup of the EFS using GPS Aids before I flashed) which I have tried to restore using Nitrality but with no success.
I have checked the sim card in another phone and it works correctly.
Starting to think that this flashing business is not for me.
Any ideas as to what I should try next?

You can change the efs folder via terminal but I found the easiest way (I had incorrect imei on hellybean) was..
Flash stock GB via Odin. Flash semaphore kernal via Odin. To get cwm.
Boot into recovery and flash cm7, boot into recovery and flash cm9, boot into recovery and flash cm10.
Obviously make sure you have cm versions on the card first. Efs corrupts when you don't flash in order example GB to JB missing out ICS. Doesn't happen all the time but that's usually the cause.
Worked like a charm for me.
