Although they are both minor, they are about the biggest differences I see:
1. Ability to download any attachment from gmail app.
2. The 4 captive buttons at the bottom of the phone light up on screen touch and not just when you touch the buttons themselves. Unless my dj05 install was corrupt I never had this feature, I had to get myself in the habit of using the menu key to unlock my phone so my keys would also light up.

anyone else have the quirk of the phone placing dollar signs or other symbols next to the preceeding letter or number when using sms?

Yes
Sent from the bowels of hell...
Yes, it does that because it was designed for punctation, like putting in a comma from a menu that shows up after hitting space. Great for that, but sadly not designed quite so well. You just have to hit space, then backspace, then space again and put it in.

Irritating bug.

I'm sure it could be fixed in a (pseudo)ROM but it is a stock piece of (mal)function..

... did anyone stop to think maybe turning off Auto-Punctuate.... or "Show Suggestions".... might disable that?
The annoying bug I have seen is it seemingly randomly capitalizing words.
I noticed today that the 4 capacitive buttons at the bottom of the phone were not all lit up as they're supposed to be. There seems to be light coming from the search button and starts to carry over into the back button but the home and menu buttons are an off white color and dont seem to be getting lit up. Any suggestions?
I seem to have the same problem. I'm on OTA 2.3.4. It could be a model that I did, but I can't remember doing anything that might have done it.

Im on kenns beta 4 of 2.3.4 and I have the problem I don't know
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
There are reasons why this build is called "beta". I'm on official 4.1.83 and have no such issue, anyone does?
Mine seem to be working fine. I know that they work with the light sensor. Try covering it up for a few seconds (to the right of the earpiece) to see if they work.

Has anyone else seen this...my bottom "back" button (menu-home-back-search) seems to be much less responsive than it used to be...all the others seem ok... Is there a way to calibrate their sensitivity?

I don't think there is a way to calibrate those. But some thing you might want to add to the OP is what rom you are on maybe there is a setting that I don't know about.
I'm on mostly stock now... Tried out Thunderhawk's latest and saw no difference.... (with that at least)...

might be a hardware problem then. if you went back to stock and same thing is happening.
Yeah...my that's my guess too...likely that my phone just has a little hardware issue...it still works, but I frequently have to hit the back button 2 or 3 times to get it to register...sigh.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
its a hardware issue. My search button isn't as sensitive as the others. Good thing I don't use that often.

Maybe someone who knows a bit more or notices something I did not can help... I was looking in literally every folder for the file that controls the soft keys. This is a script I wrote up that *should* disable them but they turn off and come back on when you tap them.
#!/system/bin/sh
chown root /sys/devices/virtual/sec/t_key/brightness
chmod 0777 /sys/devices/virtual/sec/t_key/brightness
echo 0 > /sys/devices/virtual/sec/t_key/brightness
chmod 0555 /sys/devices/virtual/sec/t_key/brightness

have you checked into the rom control toggle that disables the softkeys? even though it doesn't work on every theme/framework it seems, it might get you in the right direction?

I *could* just disable them in the kernel but still, it is not a good option if people want to toggle them on any rom.

I think that short of disabling them in the kernel there isn't a way, I tried looking through other places in hopes to figure it out but to no avail either.

I am ALL for the kernel disabling the soft keys and if need be, the keyboard backlight. After two years of fondling this phone, I know her every curve.

Marcus, if you can just disable them completely, this would be the first and ONLY option for the 80% of us who want those battery draining LED's gone for good.

no but they are really bright at night time.
Well, for battery life freaks like myself, I'm sure I would notice a gain if there were no lights activated.

I hate these bright soft keys with a passion. If there was a way to completely disable them by tweaking the kernel I would be all for it.
It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't stay on so long or pop on with the slider. Please marcus....slay these annoying lights.

FYI, with CM9, the Screen Filter app disables the soft keys. They'll turn back on if you touch them, but you can start and use an e-reader indefinitely without doing that. The app also works as a widget, so if you touch the soft keys accidentally, a quick double tap of the widget will turn them back off.

You can also make tasker run the echo 0 part of the script I wrote every time you hold the search button or open the launcher/book app.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2
From a linux based standpoint there is only one legitimate option. That is to run your script and then wear gloves which hamper the output of static electricity from your fingertips, so that you can surgically apply DUCT(or your preferred brand/type) TAPE over said lights without them turning on, in which case your script works, and peoples woes go away.
Trololol.
i agree
I agree on disabling them in the kernel for good i personally think this phone looks sexier with the lights off (no pun intended =P)
I have three users configured and at times the tablet seems to lock up. But I can still pull down the notification drawer and setting drawer. I can touch the back, home, or multitask softkeys, or slide up for Google now.
But no matter where I navigate to, the N7 does not register touches in the "screen" area.
I have found that pulling down the setting drawer and tapping the user to "logout" and then logging back in immediately fixes the issue. Also toggling sleep/wake button and logging back in also fixes it.
Is this a known issue? Is this multiuser, software or hardware specific? Any solutions?
(I read back through a couple weeks of posts but didn't see this issue)
--- UPDATE------
Just happened again. But I left it alone for a minute, picked it back up and it was working fine. Perhaps this is app lag. The notification and navi bar work because they're systems but the screen stops taking input while it lags....(just a thought, I don't know how that stuff might work)
BTW I have a 32 GB N7, it is not rooted, and is fully up to date running 4.2.1

Im having the same issue with mine..just got it afew days ago and it just started about an hour ago. I think its a screen issue cause now it keeps coming up with the menu to change wallpapers without me touching it. And its been locking up alot. Might have to RMA it.

Damn. Well maybe get a log cat next time it happens. Maybe there will be something there to show why it stopped working.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
I'll have to learn how to get a logcat. But I was able to recreate the issue and get a video. I could only get it to affect settings and the play store but I've had this in the launcher before too. I don't think you can hear but tapping the screen was causing the touch sound.

No one has had this issue? I've only experienced it in Settings and PlayStore on me first and second user, nothing on my third user. Also noticed a litte lag on the homescreen too.
In the video you may be able to hear the touch feedback sound. The screen is recognizing taps but not doing anything. Sleep/Wake fixes the issue until you leave the app...
Guess I'll need to exchange my N7 and hope to get one without this issue.
Why did this get moved to Q&A??
Are Issues not discussed in General?
[SOLVED]
I was using APP LOCK on User #3 and that caused what seems like an overlay that prevented touch on users 1&2.
I sent this issue to the apps support. And will try to find a free app locker that is milti-user friendly.
