[Q] Removing keyboard springs? - Epic 4G General

Is it possible to remove the kb springs without affecting the abiliy to remain in place when open or closed?
I want to make it open and close similar to the way the droid 2 does, I don't care for the pop open style it has now.

App Launcher

I have done some searching and cannot seem to find anything, please feel free to sarcastically point me in correct direction if i am wrong.
are there any favourite app launchers, e.g. a 1x1 program/widget than when clicked opened your 4, 8, 16 best apps (customizable) thus saving white space without having to scroll through all prorams to get to U etc?
Many thanks in anticipation

There are a few... I use Apps Organizer to arrange under manual icons and labels. Clicked once it opens a layer on the same screen with all the chosen app shortcuts in there. The most major limitation being that it cannot arrange widgets into such "folders".

You could just create a folder and drag app icons into it?
or you could just do that, sorry getting to grips with this phone still.
creating a folder works surprisingly well, many thanks

Another option
Another option is Ultimate Faves which lets you select favourite apps or contacts and scroll between the two.

TouchWiz won't stay on by default!

Randomly when I hit the home buttn I am prompted with the option touchwiz or home. I can pick either on while checking the load default and it still asks again a few min later. What am I missing?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
That's a first, never had that happen.
Have you recently installed any User interface programs like ADW launcher or launcher pro?
How about any programs in general.. please be a little more specific.
Welcome to the forums!
It only happens to me when I hold the home botton and bring up the task manager. When I hit the home botton again it prompt me to choose the launcher.

Try getting home switcher from the market and tell it to set touchwiz home as you default. See if that works.
I Will try and load my appbrain list but no to launchers. Just goole stuff and a couple widgets.

I can't post links yet so check out appbrain user: ErlyD I have no launcher apps and I did try that home launcher app recommended. But still have the problem.

Sgs tools and you go to the bottom menu and choose which launcher you want and bam! Launcher is set to default. I'm using 2.2 quantum and confirm it works.

Does my epic have to be rooted? I ran the app and set it yet still get the problem. It randomly asks when I hit home. Each time I set default then select touchwiz.

Will factory reset help with this problem? What other way can I reset clean?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I'm having this same issue!
I tried Home Switcher and Home Manager...same exact symptoms.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Download sgs tools from market. Install. Go to bottom menu upgrade stock apps, then choose laucner you want and follow instructions from there, easy fix.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Edit: this only works on rooted phones, I'm sorry if I miss read the problem.
Bottom option is:
.prop editor
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I've looked over SGS Tools, over and over again. I do not understand where the option to make this fix is.
Could you give more specific instructions? Thanks!
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Same here only .prop editor do we have to be rooted? To use this correctly?

I think I got a fix. I went to manage apps and cleared defaults on touchwiz but also cleared tw data. It sucked cause my icons and everything else I took the time to setup cleared but after rebuilding it seems to be working. Been about an hour now and the menu hasn't popped up.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Sorry guys I must have been way too blazed I swear I read that you guys had the froyo beta and had this problem, as I did have this issue. But it seems some of you are dealing with this on stock, without root and this will only work if you have root.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I believe that this issue is related to the installation of a certain application. As a matter of fact, I uninstalled several applications after going on a few downloading sprees (yeah, I get bored and have money burning a hole in my PayPal account) in hopes of fixing the issue, to no avail.
Otherwise, could it possibly be related to a glitch caused by setting a certain number of icons or widgets on the homescreen, causing the launcher's data to interfere with its default settings?
Either way, I took ErlyD's advice, cleared the data, and will rebuild my homescreens in hopes it won't happen again. Or else I will figure out what causes it.
- G
I would love to follow his advice, but TouchWiz isn't listed in my manage applications list...what the heck!
Actually, none of the stuff that came installed is listed....nascar, amazon, etc.
Where do I find these?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Okay...found it via running programs.
Cleared data.
Didn't solve my problem.
Crap.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
It failed. Sorry for the trouble it lasted longer than before though. I went a few hrs before it popped up. I am going to have to start uninstalling apps to see what happens.

Will NOT Keep Defaults for Home Button

So...my Epic continually asks me to choose my default home program every time I press the home button.
It asks me to either pick HOME or TWLauncher. So I installed DxTop Pro...now I have 3 to pick from everytime!
I tried Home Switcher and Home Manager - neither of them keep the default home screen either.
It doesn't always clear the default. I have tracked it down to when I press and hold the home button down until the task manager comes up. Once those 6 most recent programs pop up...my default home screen is cleared out.
I tried downloading the samsung task manager apk that I found on xda and installing it...didn't solve the problem.
So, I open it up to you all for ideas.
I could hard reset, but I know the moment I finish setting it back up...the new official ROM will come out and I'll have to do it all again!
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Uh when you choose your homescreen when it gives you the option of the three, do you make sure the check box at the bottom of the popup is checked off...?

Just checking lol. Which launcher are you trying to run as default and which ROM/Kernel/etc you running?

Sgs tools from the market will fix this.

Edit: this does require root, sorry not for stock issues.
I'm on the stock Epic ROM from Sprint. Never rooted.
I was running the default TouchWiz, but once this began I started using DxTop Pro to see if it would correct the issue...it did not.
I'm still using DxTop Pro because I liked it better.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Did you ever get a fix? I hve same problem. Since I got my epic. On 11/17 touchwiz crashed rebooted and it started. I run stock and have never even rooted. I have done nothing to this device. I'm on appbrain user ErlyD if you want to see my app list. Also tried home switcher and sgs tools (which by the way the menus last options are .prop editor, I say this cause I was told to select an option at the bottom of sgs that would fix it. An option I don't have.)
Anything would help. Starting to not like this. Its happening to often. No matter what I select home or tw and set to default. It will eventually pop up again. As for task managers I fin my self using only samsungs version to avoid any issues from popping up.

Check my post on another topic I had started about this. I might have found fix.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Did not work. I have started removing apps to see what might have caused it. Doing things slowly.

Messaging Application Remains Open

Well, I just got my new SGS II and noticed that on both the stock Bell firmware (KG3) and the most recent KH3 that the messaging app stays open (as per the Program Monitor widget). I have searched without finding any result. Anyone else notice this and / or have a fix?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
It does, unfortunately I noticed this too but it uses little resource. It is annoying to see the open applications count as "one" when you have finished!

Apps like messaging and internet stay in the background even after you close it,because these apps are frequently used and they load faster the next time you use it,but dont worry the android OS will kill them eventually

I waited a long time and the Messaging application never actually closed.
I suspect it is a similar bug to the Contacts issue I had with Froyo where the application remained open. This was later fixed in Gingerbread...
Does anyone else see Messaging remain open in the Program Monitor widget?

It stays open for me also, If and when the resources get low enough it should close but since we have so much ram i don't think it will ever close. It doesn't really bother me.
Stop using task killers. The android os does not work like windows that relies on free memory. It keeps apps in memory so that they can be instantly opened later. Some system processes will even be started again after you close them.
If a program is in memory but not used for a while it will be flagged to be removed if another app needs more memory. Just because an app is in memory does not mean it is using your CPU.
You are wasting more battery by killing things that you will use again or that the system will restart anyway. This phone has a lot of memory, let the phone use it!

Thsnks for your reply; but, I am not using a task killer...
I am just wondering why the stock messaging application is displayed in the Program Monitor once exiting via the back button. Is it a known bug? Also, is there any way to fix it besides killing it or using another messaging app like Handcent?

Known bug, it's not a bug, it's a feature,
Your phone has almost 1 Gig of ram, why would you want to micro manage what apps use the ram, has your phone ever run out of ram, has your phone slowed down, does it lag, do you attribute this lag (if there is any) to the messaging app running in the background???
when I replaced my messaging app using stock sms app, then the bug/feature went away

I am not sure why, really. All I am looking for is to have the Program Monitor display 0 instead of a 1...
I am famous for leaving unused tasks open and like to monitor for them using that widget. If I understand correctly running tasks consume CPU which, in turn, drains the battery.
I have noticed that the messaging app is not in the Battery usage list; so, at this point it is an annoyance more than anything...

Thanks. I tried it and you are right. I ended up reverting though. Going to look into it more if/when I find time.
Hopefully it is not the same in the next firmware release; but, for now, it is only an annoyance.

No, dont use task killers. If anything, it only eats more resources. Android keeps those apps open for a reason, when you open it next time its quicker and actually needs to use less resources. Free memory= useless memory, If there is an app which needs more memory (like a game) android will automatically kill "suspended" apps on background to free up memory. And when you finish playing it will restore those apps again. Killing it with force only causes the app to restart again and again and again and again.... Even windows does it (a little bit differently though).
And if you really want to have control over your processes in background, use watchdog which will warn you if theres an app eating resources in the background.

recommended shortcuts

How can I customize what apps are suggested when I plug in my headphones? The Note 2 had buddy pages that were customizable but I can't figure put the S4 options. Also when I place the S4 in the Samsung doc it a pop up menu asks what app you want to run and gives you several options.how do I add the apps that I want
I don't think you can. It automatically figures it out for you
