[Q] Terrible power usage while on Android - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hi guys
I have followed (as much as possible) many threads on installing Android on the HD2 and finally succeded but got a few problems in doing so.
I upgraded the Radio first to 2.12.50.02.2 and then to 2.15.50.14 (the first one was better for me) and upgraded the ROM to 3.14.408.2 as released by HTC.
Now Android finally started but it was sluggish and not as responsive as WM. The worst part though was the power consumption that normally under WM used about 5% of battery for a 6 hours period during nightime while on standby with everything off except the phone but under Android used 60% of battery for a 2 hour period still with (I believe) everything off which is unacceptable.
I tried MDJ 4.4 and Core Droid 0.3 and both gave more or less the same results with the last one totally locking up the phone which did not want to come out of standby.
I am sure that I must have done something silly not realizing it but I have seen Android running on the HD2 of a person I met and boy was it going well.
Could it be the SD card with a problem or maybe the speed of the processor tweaked by a customization that I did not see or.......
Any help or suggestion will be welcome.
Thanks
Paolo

First thing I would try is another SD card. I had one (Class 4 PNY) that would give me very high current draw numbers and Android ran very jerky from it (This was when I was running it from SD). Load times were easil 50%+ longer. Both my class 2's ran much smoother and no high current draw issues with identical builds of Android.

had the same issue as OP. jumped onto MDJ's gingerbread nand (now cyanogen mod) and my battery has been lasting on average 15-16 hours with calls, text, internet browsing and music playing. in standby i lose about 1% an hour. at the time of writing my phone has been on for 19 hours & 18 mins

load up an app that tracks usage - spare parts or system panel lite for example, or just go to the settings -> about phone -> battery use. See what's using up all the cpu cycles or power. If something seems particularly high, find out why it's doing it and if you can't figure it out then use a task manager to kill it and see if your performance improves.

Is 85mA normal current usage when idle?

I've had my Touch HD a couple of weeks now and I absolutely love it. My primary use of it is as a pocket pc and the phone comes in as a handy extra.
However, I seem to be getting battery usage problems that other people have been experiencing and I have a few questions.
I'm using Powerguard and AEButton Plus to show me my power usage. Both report about 85mA when no applications are running and no data connections are in use. I have my backlight turned down pretty low, activesync closed down and I don't use AEButton Plus to turn WiFi on and off as I don't use WiFi. Is 85mA about right? I've no idea what it is while it's in standby.
Yesterday I used my Touch HD a lot, playing about with GPS, surfing etc and by the end of the day I had over 60% charge left. Today, after a full charge overnight from the mains, I have used my Touch HD very much less but I'm already down to 56%. Powerguard still reports about 85mA when my pocket pc is idle but I've been able to watch the percentage power drop every minute or so. Then it would speed up and at other times slow down again.
Why would the battery drain so much faster today with the same or less power being drawn? AEButton Plus reports an uptime of only 1.5 hours yet almost half the battery is used up.
The battery is only a couple of weeks old. I cycled it about three times when I got it, ie letting it run down completely and then charging it back fully. I'm not charging it in the cradle but directly off the mains overnight. Has the battery lost it's calibration so quickly?
If I have applications or devices drawing more power, shouldn't I see that in a higher level current usage. When I have GPS on it goes up to about 300mA so I'm assuming that at 85mA there is nothing else running that shouldn't be running.
I have spent a lot of time installing all the applications etc onto my Touch HD and so only want to hard reset as a very last resort. I really need to be able to use my pocket pc and get on with my life now, but I can't if I'm worrying about whether it will last through a phone call.
I've got a spare battery on order, but I would really like find out why my battery is draining so much more quickly now.
Please help. I love my Touch HD. It does everything that I want and it's gorgeous, but I need it's battery to last at least a day.
Thanks,
Teresa
Sorry, I should also add that I'm using the stock V1.56 ROM.
Teresa
This is getting weird now. I've now started to use my Touch HD more. I made a 20 minute phone call, ran TomTom for a few minutes and now I've had google maps running with GPS for about half an hour and I've only lost a few percent. My power is at 50%. It seems that the more power I draw from the battery, the more slowly it goes down.
Do I need to cycle my battery again? I'm worried about doing this too often as it stresses the battery and shortens it's life.
Teresa
batt and batt % are not a reliable thing
you can't really rely very much on it
and it's never linearly
I know the battery usage isn't linear and it tends to speed up as more power is used. However, the pocket pc uses the value to decide when to shut down. My Touch HD has just run out of power with an uptime of only 3 hours and 50 minutes and it was fully charged only sixteen hours ago. This does not leave me confident in being able to use it for a whole day.
What can I do to improve the battery life? I have an HP iPAQ hx4700 with a four year old battery in it that still lasts ages and ages. I don't think I'll get anywhere near as long a life from my Touch HD battery. I only need it to last a day between charges with an uptime of at least six hours or more. As soon as the capacity of this battery starts to degrade, it will be useless as it's only just useful now.
Teresa
get dotfreds taskmanager too see what processesvare are running inthe background.
use advanced config to enable the power saving features
Thanks for the suggestions. I've already spent ages searching these forums so I have been using dotfreds taskmanager and all I see is idle running at about 80% because the other 20% is being used by the task manager. AEButton plus only uses about .1% every few seconds. Is 85mA usage high for idle?
I'll try advanced config to turn on the powersaving features.
I need my pocket pc and phone all day to day as I'm out and won't be able to recharge it after this morning. I just hope it lasts.
Teresa
Hi,
In this forum I saw many tips how to reduce the battery usage. You could search those.
For example turn off 'Receive all incoming beams' in Setting/Connections/Beam.
You also can flash one of the cooked ROMs that present here. I use onkolog's Lite ROM and battery usage is very low (10-20% per day with moderate usage).
Thanks, but turning off incoming beams is one of the first things I did. I think I've followed most of the tips I've found and I've even managed to stop that pesky activesync from keeping on coming back.
I'm not running Powerguard today and I'll just use my Touch HD normally and see how it goes.
I don't want to flash a cooked rom just yet as I've never done that before, but I'll try that eventually if my battery usage continues to be so poor. I have a lot of applications installed on my Touch HD, so building it takes a very long time. I use it for everything, from shopping lists, access databases, reading ebooks, playing games, satnav to plain old diary. These are all applications that ran quite happily on my old pocket pc without undue battery usage. The only main difference on my Touch HD is that I'm using TFDetacher so that I can still have my old Today screen as well as Touch Flo.
Hi, only if you run out of solutions, you could look at this thread for an extra battery (I've not tried it myself but it increases your battery life by 200%)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529673
Thanks for that, smeddy. This looks like a really interesting product. I will look out for what people say about it.
My battery seems to be much better so far today. I'm still on 100% with an uptime of 25 minutes since I charged it up over four hours ago.
85mA while idling is reasonable if you have backlight level at >50%.
68mA is the lowest I've seen at minimal backlight level on my HD.
Hey TeresaTT,
Something I can tell you with a high degree of confidence is that you really cant trust the battery gauge on the HD that much, either under idle conditions or with higher battery loading. And just try doing a reset and I bet that it'll will come up on a different % value after you reboot!
Another thing is that battery consumption is quite dependant on not only how you configure various functions of your phone but also what ROM you use. My present ROM seems to be noticeable more battery effecient than many of the ROMs I tried before, and most especially the stock ROM that came with the phone, and the stock ROM I initially upgraded to.
EDIT:
Cant comment on the battery current consumptions as I've never felt the need to measure them.
LoopyLoo
Thanks for the info. My Touch HD draws 85mA with the backlight set pretty low, just one point off the lowest. Therefore it seems that the usage is pretty high. I'll have to look at other roms and try one or two, although I need to wait until I've got some more time free. I've already spent hours and hours on my Touch HD, but I do love it. It's a huge upgrade from my old HP iPAQ hx700.
Before my battery would last about a day but after flashing to my current custom ROM now lasts 2 to 3 days with moderate usage. If left on standy idle the % doesn't seem to go down. Probably last a week doing nothing...
I believe the official ROM I had before was buggy with power management i.e. even when on standby with screen off, sometimes it may not cut off power sucking features like WIFI, gprs/hsdpa, bluetooth etc.
Thanks for that ez2remember. It looks like my Touch HD is behaving normally with a stock ROM. I've had a quick look at the ROM forum and it almost looks like a foreign language. Even the dummies guide is a bit foreign with HSPL, USPL etc. Then I have to pick which ROM to use and hope it's stable and all my applocations work. I can see that this is going to take quite a bit of time for me to research. I'm fairly technical so I'll get there in the end.
Yes I agree flashing can seem a bit daunting. This is my first real WM device. I've played with one briefly before so found the conversion slightly complicated. I came from s60 devices. Dummies and step-by-step guides on s60 were really easy to follow. I just think WM users are far more technical so instructions seems more complicated than it actually is.
It's just a matter of getting the latest HSPL onto your device (one time affair) then you can flash as many custom ROMs as you want.
You can use nue ClockSpeed 1.3 to manage the clock of the processor.

Also, Pocket Shield will switch off screen wile talking, and a lot of functions I don't use.
My garmin gps shut down few days ago and i had to use garmin in my HD for around 1.5hrs....
I think i lost only around 20-30% charge.
My battery lasts atleast 2 days with wifi on all the time ( wifi auto off in standby mode.)
I do make few calls and sms

Battery drain after 6.5

Hi all
I recently upgraded to WM6.5 (stock rom, TD2 on Orange UK) and have found that my battery life has reduced dramatically from 2-3 days use to less than 1 day.
I'm not using bluetooth or wi-fi and have tried to remove anything else that may be draining the battery.
The one big difference I have noticed between 6.1 and 6.5 is that I am getting a much stronger signal, 4 bars H compared to 1-2 bars H or 3G before. Could this be a cause of the battery drain?
Also, my memory usage is around the 70-80% mark whereas before it used to be between 40-60%. I have checked task manager and nothing seems to be running in the background.
I would appreciate any advice as this is really spoiling my experience with this fantastic device.
Thanks
Jeff
The wm6.5 you upgraded to is an official rom through Orange? If so, it's probably crammed with unneccessary apps (bloatware) which might explain the memory usage. The Radio ROM was probably upgraded at the same time, which explains why you appear to get a stronger signal (the newest radio roms show more bars, though the actual signal stays the same).
Maybe you would be better with one of the "lean" cooked 6.5 roms? (you need to hardspl first with olinex 1.83)
The higher signal reading wouldn't cause the battery drain, it's more likely something is "waking" the phone from suspend periodically.
Battery life lasts 2-3 days? And 40-60% memory usage on 6.1?!
Wow, I wish my D2 was like that. Mine almost lasts one entire day, and memory usage is always near 70%. I haven't done 6.5 as arabic isn't out for it yet and I need it to read the damn messages companies send.
Hi. I think I might have the same problem with battery after upgrading to official 6.5 WWE. With official 6.1 my battery lasted 2-3 days. Now around 1 day. Also my memory usage went from 50-60% to 70-80%. Then I instaled HTCPedia Topaz settings tool and with some tweaks memory usage droped again to 40-50%. But battery problem still remains. Hmmm I also installed FInixNOverBatteryIcon and then gtrab Batt enhancer. Maybe any of this two apps cause problems with the battery?
I have the ATT Pure and recently DISABLED the auto rotation for TouchFlo 3d. It is disabled by default but I decided that was one of the first things I wanted to change after getting the phone.
So far today, my phone's battery has lasted much longer. We'll see what happens by the end of the day but so far so good.

That's really strange, mine is never over 50% except when I have WMP running or watching movies via CorePlayer or inbuilt videoplayer.
I used the upgrade from the HTC site, so no Orange bloatware.
Memory currently running at 85% even though nothing seems to be running, battery not even making it through the day with just light use, i.e. a bit of surfing, couple of calls and a few texts.
I'm going to try it with the Sense off tomorrow.
Can't beleive the difference between 6.1 and 6.5, its like 2 different phones, and it seems quite a few people are having similar issues.
Is it easy to go back to 6.1?

Afraid I'm getting the opposite - much better battery life.
As an aside, previously I was using Garmin XP satnav and haven't got around to re-installing it yet so thought I'd give CoPilot a whirl. Downloaded the maps and tried it on a 30 min journey tonight. Worked pretty well but the battery drain was much less. 100% down to 90% after 30 mins. Before with Garmin XP, it would pretty much drain the battery in an hour.
Not sure this is an core improvement to GPS battery life in 6.5 or because CoPilot has a lower battery drain.
Cheers, Rob.

im having the exact same problem and im also interested in going back to 6.1 (the good old days when i didnt have to mess around with my phone for hours per day just to get it to function as expected eh!) 6.5 is so frustrating and can i ask what the point is of the honeycomb?
had my d2 since CW stocked it in april, and was fine until 6.5.
Hmmm...An hour ago my topaz was full charged. I made two calls while phone was pluged in. Before I unpluged it I checked battery information. Everything was ok. Time of last full charge half an hour before, standby time, call duration and device usage. Then I unpluged the phone and the time of last full charge changed to the second I unpluged the phone and all other values went to 0. Ok. That seemed ok because of talking some minutes before. I was happy and I tought now it would be OK. But 5 min ago I checked the status again...and guess what...last full charge is "Not applicable" and all other values are set to 0. sad sad sad
I'm getting major battery drain after I upgrade to the official wwe 6.5 rom as well. It's unpredictable though. Several times in the past couple weeks i've barely made it halfway through the day, then other times it's fine. I can't see any difference in what's running. This never used to happen with 6.1.
I'm getting the opposite. really much better battery life after upgrading to wm 6.5 on my diamond 2
Currently running official htc wm 6.5, ROM: 2.16.412.1 (67041) and RADIO: 4.49.25.17
Profiling Tools
Hi,
I upgraded to Dutty's 6.5 ROM - it seemed like the charge lasted for a full day but for the last couple of days battery performance has been pathetic. I checked the task manager - nothing seems to be out of place - memory usage is around 50%. I have two emails accounts set to pull items as they arrive and weather/facebook data is also pulled at regular intervals. Despite these the charge used to last for more than a day...
I am wondering if there are any tools which can show me the CPU/Memory usage by various tasks over a period of time... The phone is always warm for the last couple of days and the home screen animations are stuttering...
Any Suggestions????
TIA

Wallpaper and Battery Drain
Found the reason why Battery Drain increased in my TD2 Running Dutty's Wm6.5 ROM suddenly. Hard to believe but its because I have the weather animation wallpaper turned on and I changed the background to a bright colorful one (something that came with the ROM - i believe its a stock wallpaper!!)
I am not sure how (probably because of more processing required to overlay the translucent clouds over the bright red wallpaper) but this increased battery drain tremendously. Battery did not last for 3/4th of a day.
I have now switched back to the dull black wallpaper and the drain is back to the original rate (last for 1.5 days with all the other features turned ON (no 3G))...
Others, please check this out - maybe this is a common problem
--Ashwin
I upgraded to the official HTC 6.5 ROM and have the same issues with the battery barely lasting a day. If only that was the least of the problems.
Configuration is similar to my 6.1 build, except on this I've disabled the HTC Sense front end as I thought this might be responsible for the slow performance and battery sapping, unfortunately no different :-(

What does this mean? Your battery lasts longer with this setting off?
I can confirm after 3 days, Dutty ROM Holly Grail R6 WWE TP drastic improvent battery life, but i think, it is not only because he back from 2.18 on 2.16 base ROM, have here some Duttys wizard make... However, device now "can live" 2 - 2,5 days with normal using.
For other people who have problem with high battery draining, maybe one very usefull app, author is member xda developers forum:
Battery Guard v0.0.1.3
Regards
My battery life is longer on 6.5 than when on 6.1 (stock roms) and I only noticed that I Had substantial battery drain when I had the camera still running in the taskbar in the top right... that rinsed my battery down in about 2hrs to zero.

[Q] Battery Life Changing

I always had the issue of battery life being short as hell, 60ma on standby
i even updated my radio to 2.14* the newest one forgot the name but no luck!
But recently i got good battery life 5ma on standby!!! After i flashed the newest ChuckyRom Lite Rom.
But yesterday it went back to sucking again after i restarted android. i restarted android before, but the thing i did different this time was have the charger plugged in when i booted into android.
So my question is to the people that have excellent android battery life, How do u boot into android? Do you Flash a new rom? Format your memory card? Do you use set cpu? ATK autokill?

I can easily go a day on one charge. And normally I boot into Android while charging. I don't think it matters tho cuz you have to unplug and replug your charger cable before android recognizes it. I'm running Kumars GTX and have a class 6 micro SD (helps with battery life). I also use set CPU and have a taskiller icon I normally press before I turn my screen off. Also I have 2.12_5 radio and had worse battery with 2.14. Hope this helps,

Android 1/2 day battery
with Custom Windows Builds my HD2 battery is good for 2-3 days
BUT
with Android builds after 1/2 a day or maximum 1 day the battery is game over
When booting into Android - is Windows running in Background and using resources
Then I would understand the drain,...

Lose the Taskiller icon, it does nothing but harm. First of all it uses extra battery, because most apps you kill will simply re-open quite shortly after, and secondly it may slow down your phone, or generate problems. Android works in a completely different way than Win(Mo/dows), here it's not a good thing to clear up ram.
The only occasion in which you should use a taskiller, is when an app goes mental and you need to shut it down somehow. For all other cases, don't use it. That's not my personal preference, but a fact that all Android-savvy people will confirm.
For me it sucks the battery out when I just use android
Standby I get 8-14mA, once I use some apps for few minutes it jumps up to 150-400mA :S
What can be the cause?

winmo IS NOT running in the background! android is not emulated or s.th. like that.
well maybe it has to do with usa hd2 or euro hd2? i have the usa version
its just realllllly odd that the battery varies sooo much from person to other
i have tried countless things to improve battery, search far and wide in these forums, but no luck.
and when i dont do a thing it does well at 6ma but then all of a sudden it raises to 60ma on standby, when i restart. (60ma is what i always get)
i even got the new sd card from htc free but no luck and its a samsung! (im pretty sure samsung is more reliable, no?)
MAYBE A FILE GETS CORRUPTED that has to do with power management?
just throwing ideas around, anyone have any other theories?
I recently was able to get better battery life, this is my setup
8 gig class 6 microsd
Radio: 2.10_50
WinMO Rom: ChuckyRoom-Tabtastic lite (Put in AIRPLANE MODE before booting Android)
Android: mDeejay froyo Z 1.3 rev.
I am not using setCpu, but I DO USE Taskiller
With this set up I am getting 4-7 mA drain in standby
My tips for battery life are in the FAQ in my sig.

[Q] Screen off lag problem with [AUG12] AmeriCanAndroid AOSP HD2 GB2.3.5 CM7

Hi all!
I tried yesterday [AUG12] AmeriCanAndroid AOSP HD2 GB2.3.5 CM7 build from SD card.
This was my first Android experience with HD2 and must say that i am impressed.
Didnt expected that everything will work so flawless. Deep respect to creators of this build.
I noticed only one problem so far. When i turn screen off (red button) and when i try to turn it on again there is a lag presence (3-10 secs) and again sometimes it turns on instantly. Is there maybe some fix for this behavior?! I mean i can live with this but ...
I have played with device intensive for 2 hours and than i leave it with wifi turned on overnight and battery duration was almost 14 h. Is this good because i dont know what to except from SD build ??
And should i use some autoloader before HTC Sense in WM loads as some advise to maximize batt life or that is no longer necesarry with new builds like this?!

This is a known problem with SD builds, don't worry it is normal.
To check the battery, use Current Widget from the android market, it should show 5-8 mA in my personal experience with the ACA SD build, although some people get even less than that apparently. I think that 14 hours seems a bit low, try using JuiceDefender (Android market) and SetCPU (here on XDA) to maximize battery life.
You may as well disable HTC Sense in Windows if you don't need to use it, and use an autoloader to load Android automatically, makes the whole thing more convenient and I also saw a minuscule improvement in battery life.
Thank you.
Current widget showing cca 160 mA drain in standby with JuiceDefender turned on (wifi and gsm are turned off).
Without JuiceDefender drain was about 230 mA
How to get such low values like 5-8 mA.
Android is started via haret.exe from WM (latest official 3.14 rom)?!

[Q] and android build for htc hd mini that can last longer for 1 day

what is the nand android build for htc hd mini that can last longer for 1 day of normal usage???
Both nand builds (CM7.2 and Sense 3.5) lasts 1-2 day if you use only 2G network for calls and some wifi. But the battery is very innacurate: sometimes drops 20% in 5 min, then increase 20% in 1 min without charging, sometimes the phone shuts down because battery suddenly drops from 30% to 1% and after phone restart, battery reports 30% again.
I think it's worth trying if you use your Mini as a secondary phone.
ofcourse sense is better and more accurate than cm7.2 now, but the answer may change with the update we are waiting for.
Sense is more "good looking" than CM but CM is more customizable than Sense.
It depends what on what each prefer .
I know i'm offtopic and i'm sorry for that, but it's so quiet on this forum :d
We all are wainting for updates.

--firstly sorry about my bad english--
i tried almost all android builds including sd and nand versions and i just should say derefass' Sense 3.5 port to our HTC HD Mini is the best. Im using this rom for daily use. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1588816)
we all know there is no perfect build has developed yet. Also this ROM has four big issues. Respectively:
1- Battery usage is amazingly nice but battery driver is inapplicable. For example, battery stat shows 20% while actually i have 70 - 60%. so where i know i have 70 - 60% battery? experience. while battery driver states 0% battery and shut down device, i put my device on charge just for 5 secs. after openning device i have still 50 - 60% battery. with that method my battery goes on 2 days for minimal usage, at least 1 day with intensive usage (wifi, wifi hotspot, 3g, etc)
2- video is not working (neither recording nor playing)
3- bluetooth headset and car kit is not working. well i dont use bluetooth headset. not problem for me.
4- system cache size. this one is just a little problem, can be fix easily with third part apps (cache fixer)
i totally recommend this rom if anyone want to install android. i also think all mini users should. seriously, our mini is nearly the best mobile phone in his "beginner level smartphone" segment.
these are my opinions.
i like htc sense 3.5 rom for our hd mini.hopes the update will come soon n the battery driver will show correct battery status n no draining problem.. i;m doesn;t wondering that our hd mini can get sense 3.5.thanks developers
hello, best is Sense. Battery long live and GPS works
