You can't accept OTA updates when you are rooted.
I see, but only used temp root with visionary
is that going to affect something?
Or what are my options to get a hold of updates in the future, a costum rom instead? I do kinda like the stock rom, just without stock apps
anyone?
Once again, if you are rooted, it doesnt matter how, you CANNOT accept ota update.
If you deleted something you shouldnt have, then restore the backup to that, or do a factory reset and re-root.
Ok i just figures since it was TEMProot that it didn't matter. Tnx for the reply, tried the factory default option (no luck), is there any place where I can get the Stock firmware to re-flash the phone?
Or would anyone in here recommend another rom ? Tons of custom roms, as I can tell.
Thread moved in Desire HD General.
go here and youll find your rom that you need,
you need the ones that are "RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE" in the file name, as these are what we call World Wide Editions
Thank you very much.
Just to make sure I do not **** something up, what are the steps i should follow, to install the rom?
This is what I did: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=888109
Got the same problem -- some time ago I removed some "useless" apps from my /system/app folder, and when 1.72 update was released I wasn't able to install it in any way (I was trying to follow this guide). I restored the missing apps, and then everything went fine using the guide mentioned above!
Hope this helps.

Sorry but that ain't correct... You *can* update your phone if you're rooted, the main problem is that root will be gone after update. The best solution is to *always* reject OTA updates provided by HTC and wait until devs here have found a safe way to update your device without losing root privileges.
Thank you
Thank you all, it gave perfectly sense since I'm quite happy with the stock firmware, i'll stick with this. The root is not so necessary for me at least for now
I'm glad it was corrected that visionary did not remove the ability for OTA, that was also what I've read before used it.
Hi all,
[I originally posted a question about this in the General Discussions forum, before I realized that there were dedicated forums for each phone model. So please forgive me for effectively double-posting]
Totally new to Android, only got my Desire Z last Friday. I'd like to root my phone and play around with custom ROMS, but I'm worried if I ever need to return the phone for warranty purposes, and for when I buy another phone and want to sell this one.
So my objective is to make sure I have a failsafe way to revert back to my current stock HTC ROM before I start messing around with rooting/custom roms.
As I understand it, the generic steps for rooting/s-off/custom rom are:
- Gain temproot
- Gain permroot + S-OFF
- Install custom bootloader and recovery image (ROM Manager/Clockworkmod)
- Install custom ROM
So if I want to revert back to the stock HTC ROM, I image I need to do the following:
- Restore HTC ROM
- Restore original recovery image and bootloader
- Remove permroot and set S-ON back
- Remove all traces of the method to gain root/S-OFF
Is that generally correct?
I'm currently thinking about using the following procedure, but there's a few gaps in there still. I'd appreciate it if people could verify my procedure and fill in the gaps...
Permroot+S-OFF the phone
Step 1. Back up phone data
Planning to use HandyBackup for that, just need contacts, SMS and call log...
Step 2. Flash older HTC firmware
There's no permroot/S-OFF hack for firmwares >=1.72 at the moment, so we have to first downgrade to 1.33.405.5 using the method described on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261 (steps 1-12)
After I do this, make sure I never ever upgrade this phone to >=1.72 again!
Question: this guide tells me to make a goldcard first. As I understand it that's only required if you have a branded phone. My Desire Z is not branded as far as I know, so is it correct to say that I do not need a goldcard?
Step 3. permroot+S-OFF
Follow steps 13-19 from the link above.
Better get the original CID here as well? How?
Step 4. Create a backup of the existing bootloader and recovery image
Question: how can I do this?
dd if=/.... of=/....
dd if=/.... of=/....
Step 5.Install ROM Manager
Step 6. Install recovery image from inside ROM Manager
Step 7. Create a backup of the phone using ROM Manager
This will be a backup of the stock HTC rom, which is rooted+S-OFF. I will need this later in case I ever want to revert the phone back to factory defaults
Now how to revert back to factory defaults:
Step 8. Restore stock HTC ROM using ROM Manager
Restore using the backup I created in step 7 above.
Step 9. Restore original bootloader and recovery image
Question: how can i do this?
dd if=/... of=/....
dd if=/... of=/...
Step 9. S-ON and remove root
Question: "gfree -r -f"? This link here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Returning_to_Stock talks about using "gfree -r" to restore "partition 7", but I've not seen anywhere where this backup of partition 7 is actually created...
Step 10. Clean up after myself
remove psneuter, gfree, uninstall ROM Manager, Visionary, SuperUser
So, summarizing my questions:
- Do I need to make a goldcard/debrand my phone first?
- How can you make a backup of the existing bootloader/recovery image?
- How can I restore the original bootloader/recovery image?
Kind regards...
Just root your thing already. I'm not confirming anything or nothing in your very well put escape route...but worry about that later. Yes there's always going to be a way to unroot. Especially when we have the files nao.
Root via the wiki page to downgrade then use the rage/gfree method to temp then permroot.
You CAN (and should) backup your stock ROM, but there is no need to revert to it before unrooting. The method of unrooting restores a completely bone stock ROM anyways. The backup is just useful to keep around if you ever make a misstep installing a new ROM and need to revert back.
To unroot, follow the wiki to unroot lol.
As long as you keep a program like Titanium Backup up to date, you'll always have your apps and system data backed up too. This much extreme caution is not necessary as much as it pains me to put it that way. Just backup your apps and be smart when u install a new ROM and you'll be fine.

OK, then how (and at which stage) do I back up my stock ROM? Before or after downgrading and rooting?

But the wiki only says:
In case of the original T-Mobile G2 the stock rom is called PC10IMG_Vision_TMOUS_1.19.531.1_Radio_12.21.60.09b_26.02.01.15_M2_release_149459_signed.zip

Well, guess what: I don't have a T-Mobile G2. I have an unbranded Desire Z. So which stock rom do I use in case I have to restore, and where do I get it from?
Sorry for being paranoid, but given the trouble my wife would give me in case I somehow ruined my phone (yes, I'll get into trouble even if it's my phone and not hers ), a bit of advance planning is worth it to me.
Hi,
I am new to this forum and android stuff.
Please forgive me if I asked noob question.
I tried to search but got no complete answer.
My condition:
Nexus 7
build number JRO03S
used Nexus root toolkit 1.5.3
to unlock and root
used TWRP to install poitee kernel for usb dac.
Then:
The 4.1.2 updates notification show up
I pressed yes ... accidentally.
Now:
The build number becomes JRO03S
but the Android version is still 4.1.1
Question:
a. How to update to 4.1.2?
b. How to update without wiping any data and apps?
c. Do I have to reinstall the pointee kernel?
d. Will flashing rom ( updating to newer version ) wipe all things?
Sorry for so many questions,
For my situation it is a mixed up that I can't find similar condition on the internet yet.
Please kindly help and advise.
Much Thanks!
Btw,
I done below, no success:
1. quickboot
2. TWRP recovery
3. install nakasi-JZO54K-from-JRO03S.zip (from /sdcard)
4. error --> "Status 7" shown.
Cannot update.
Please Please help....
Use the wugs toolkit and go back to fully stock ROM, re lock the bootloader.
Only then will you be able to apply the OTA update.
backup your app data using titanium backup.
There is a modified version of the update that someone made. It doesn't perform the system checks that cause so many peoples devices to fail. If you can't run the update because you changed or deleted a system apk, read this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32752631&postcount=20
Don't run this if you're just not sure of why your update is failing.

Understood and Thanks a lot!!!:good:
that means all in all,
I still have to go through
the route of "Backup all --> Flash Stock & unroot --> Root --> Restore all".
However, considering the latest update seems don't have anything important or useful to me
So I just wait for the next more important update.
and save the drudgery next time.

He doesn't need to lock his bootloader, and he'll still not be able to run the update the natural way as long as he's got twrp or cwm installed. He can flash the factory rom and push the update through using custom recovery though.

Thanks for you advise,:highfive:
it is very kind of you to help.
I think may be the Status 7 error could be caused by the Custom Kernel Installed (poitee)
I better ask him in detail later on.
But mine is JRO03S,
May be it is safer to Return to Stock Rom completely and go for OTA later.
Sadly, This 4.1.2. seems got no very useful component to me,
I solely use it as a second PDA and Music Player with USB DAC.
I will have to wait for better solution then.....

The latest update allows you to boot into recovery mode without being plugged into usb. Now, if I get stuck in a bootloop, I don't have to look for something to plug my device into to restore. This feature alone is worth whatever hassle one may have to do to update.

O'really.....em...then it is a different story..(Safer for the future...)
Perhaps, I just:
1. use Titanium Backup to back up everything --> copy the "Back up" to PC (just in case)
2. use Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit 1.5.4 to Flash Stock n Root
3. if can Flash to 4.1.2 stock rom directly, OK
4. if can't --> flash back to 4.1.1 stock rom (JRO03S) and then OTA
5. Finally, use Titanium backup to restore Everything.
Have to Thank You you guys again!

Here is the Droid Razr HD software update. I have not tested it as I use CM 10.1 and have no interest in going back to stock. I found it on www.droidrzr.com in a forum post then shared it on my dropbox account.
I posted it on my Dropbox account so not sure how long it will last until the link is gone:

It does "fix" the bootloader unlock exploit though

So, stock recovery to install this?
I would assume you would need to be 100% stock, including the recovery, to install this.

hmm put it on my internal storage and its not found, I think stock recovery wants to see it on a sdcard.
If your boot loader is unlocked before the update, it should stay unlocked. You just will not be able to unlock with methods out there now.

A few questions I haven't been able to find answers to (many threads have been started on this new update topic and I haven't found the answers I'm looking for yet):
1) I've heard that there are two versions of this update, 9.20.xx and 9.18.xx... Anyone know the differences yet? Is one version for phones that have been unlocked and the other for phones that are still locked? Is one version for XT925 and the other for XT926? I received the 9.18 version, I am rooted, unlocked, and have a XT926 phone.
2) Anyone with an already unlocked bootloader try and take the update? Do you remember which version of the update you took? Did it install correctly? Are you still unlocked?
3) Anyone that is rooted and unlocked try to take the update? Did it install correctly? Are you still rooted and unlocked after the update? Did you have to protect the root with either SuperSU or Voodoo OTA Root Keeper? If so, do you mind posting step-by-step instructions for protecting the root so the phone is still rooted after the update?
Thanks to all who can shed light on these questions!

There are 2 different versions, depends on what System version you have of 4.1.2 on the XT926 only. The 9.18.79 version would indicate that your Systems version is 9.16.6 if this is not correct DO NOT FLASH. I am Rooted/Unlocked, if you take the plunge you must OTA Rootkeeper/SuperSU backup SU, as the update breaks Root> IF there is no backup of SU with the latest binaries. If you lose Root, there are a couple of ways to Downgrade. A common problem for those of us Root/Unlocked the Update FAILs at the end. Most of the Update goes through, however the new Radio does not go through, as of right now if you Update and your Baseband is VANQUISH_BP_100730.081.64.09P then you have the OLD radio, the new Radio is VANQUISH_BP_100730.160.64.15P.
Between the 2 OTA's these should match-up as either 9.16.6 = 9.18.79 or 9.16.9 = 9.20.1
Thanks for the reply! A few more questions if you don't mind (would hate to do something wrong... like I did last time... luckily I was able to revert back to an original version and fix the install... sigh...):
4) With protecting root, I need the SuperSU Pro version, yes? To be able to use the survival mode, yes? Will Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper do the same thing? Is it possible to use both "to be sure"?
5) I have everything backed up with Titanium Backup. Should I bother getting the pro version and backing everything up using the cloud backup and hypershell? Or won't this matter since if root doesn't keep I won't be able to use Titanium Backup?
6) I also have performed the VZW Wireless Hotspot hack using SQLite. Am I going to have to undo the hack in order for the OTA update to work?
Thanks again for all your help!
Update - I decided to attempt the update and hope for the best. System update 9.18.79.xx updating from 9.16.6.xx.
I purchased the SuperSU Pro from the Play Store, and used the survival mode in SuperSU. I also used the Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and protected root. I figured if one didn't work the other might... Voodoo worked to protect and re-install root access (not sure about SuperSU as I tried Voodoo first to restore root after the install).
I am unsure if the bootloader is still unlocked, but from what people have said there doesn't seem to be a reason to believe it is re-locked. I haven't tested it out to know for sure though.
It appears that the entire update installed correctly. No errors, and the baseband version was updated to the new radio (xxx.15P).
I did not undo the VZW Wireless Hotspot hack prior to installing the update.
Hopefully this post helps others out there.
My final question... what does updating the radio/baseband do exactly?
i need help! i tried installing the update but i forgot i had TWRP.. so the update did not got installed, i rebooted the phone, but the OS tried to install the update again and inmediatly reboot the phone in recovery again .. then from recovery i flashed liquid smooth rom but i got stuck in the boot animation... my big issue is that my power button is broken! now i cant reset the phone to enter in fastboot mode.. i cant do anything... now my battery is totally drained and i cant turn on the phone (my power button does not work).. i can plug the usb cable and the led turns green. but i dont see any more options

My suggestion, let your phone charge a bit.
Once charged up, turn it on and get it into Fastboot. From there you can use the DROID RAZR HD UTILITY 1.21 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2307439). In that utility option 1 will bring you back to complete stock ROM, option 2 will bring you back to a stock recovery. This will completely erase your phone.
This should at least give you a fresh functioning phone. If you want to try to keep your data or personal files, I'm not sure what you could load via fastboot to get yourself a functioning phone again (maybe just a kernel?).
As a side note, I used TWRP to load the update and my phone updated except the radios it seems. It sounds like the same thing happens with the stock recovery.

I tried to take the 9.18.79 update I protected the root (I'm not unlocked) before I did so I also temporarily un-rooted (I've always been told to do this before and update) Now I an no longer rooted and it can't find any SU binary codes. Gonna have to flash back to 9.6.16 and try it again I guess or stay on 9.6.16 in order to maintain root for now. If you find a solution please share.

I agree with Lenny. This same thing happened to me when I tried to take the liquid smooth ROM. Follow his instructions above. You'll lose all your pics, vids, files, etc. But at least you'll have a working phone again.
Went smoothly here
All my devices except this one are rooted and some are rom'd. I thought long and hard about whether to void this warranty but decided one day it would be out of updates from VZW and I would want to flash something. I have been denying the OTA for the last day so I figured now or never.
Here are the simple steps:
Download and install Moto device manager (for the USB drivers) here
Enable USB debugging in developer options on the phone
run motochopper here
run motoapocolypse here
install voodooOTA root keeper from Play and backup root
apply OTA
It went error free. The phone has the 15P radio update, unlocked BL and root.

I want to confirm something, you unlocked the bootloader and then took the OTA and the bootloader remain unlocked (and stayed rooted due to root keeper)?
So the benefit to all this would be to get the new radio update?

Yes, the bootloader won't get locked again after it is unlocked. Moto would be shooting themselves having to reinstate warranties if they did that. Yes I wanted the option of flashing later becuase the ota will install sooner or later. I also want to stay on the upgrade path for now to have current radios.
I still have an Eris lying around that is long out of support but i have gb on it.

that's what i want to do, but i cant because my power button is broken! so i cant enter to fastboot mode without the power button.. i will have to open my phone and try to fix the power button myself.
Just to make a point and to clear up any confusion, this Update will not lock the Bootloader. If you have an Unlocked Bootloader then you will have an Unlocked Bootloader after the update, regardless if it fully works or not, and even if you lose Root, the Bootloader will still be Unlocked. If Root is lost with an Unlocked Bootloader, I suggest downgrading through an FXZ of either 9.16.6 or 9.16.9 and restore Root.
Received this yesterday evening and am wondering if anyone has a good idea of what this update entails. It states is security patch and stability fix, if I'm not mistaken. Probably just a regular non-major update, then?
I am in the middle of returning my tab back to stock to then update to this update... Will report back in a while. @all
If you have unlocked your bootloader to use a custom recovery DO NOT UPDATE. It will soft brick!!! I tried in vain and am having to resort to 'back to stock' as, like a pleb, I don't backup before I tinkered

i have just updated my yoga 830LC. But i forgot my bootloader is unlocked. It's soft brick. Can you help me how to back to stock Lollipop ROM. please help me! thanks
Do you have a backup? When I first tried to update I think it did update part of the rom. I reflashed the patched esp (which you should still have if you have unlocked you boot-loader)
It then let me in to recovery and to restore.
Try that and report back

Hi. I have this update from lenovo too, my 1050F is rooted, how I do a backup ? and you flash which stock rom, before upgrading ?
If possible, I want to keep my data.
Thank you.
I think the only way to keep you data is with something like Titanium backup saved to an external source and then whenever the update is finished re-root and restore selected backed up data
If you have unlocked you boot-loader you must have flashed a customers recovery. I did a twrp back up and selected what I want to restore.

Sent from my SM-G901F using Tapatalk
I have the 8 inch version of this tablet (830F) and received a similar update notification.
I just used the temp recovery trick to root and disable some bloat but left it otherwise stock. The tablet is currently in the process of backing up with temp TWRP and I was thinking of unrooting and giving this update a shot.
But it's not worth losing root over it...
Did anyone apply the patch in the meantime? Were you able to root again?
Thanks.
Yeah I have rooted, unlocked the boot-loader and flash twrp... All is good.
Have you flashed the patched boot-loader? If so you will need to flash the stock 830F ROM
Soft Brick
I'm just leaving my experience in case anyone does the same mistake as I.
I tried to use de "Hide root" option of SuperSu before upgrading, I have a locked bootloader, so I thought that it would be enough but I well... it didn't even boot after de lenovo screen
So I had to returno to stock, after reading what other peole did I manage to finally flash it back to stock lollipop.
I download this stock rom from lenovo-forums.ru

[As rookie, cannot post links :silly:]
Before flashing, the flash.xml has to be edited. Find
<string>fastboot flash system $system_file</string>

and add -s 1G to the command
<string>fastboot -S 1G flash system $system_file</string>

Then, enter on bootloader mode. I did it from de Recovery Mode (PWR on, and after de "lenovo" press both volume keys)
And just flash it with Phone Flash Tool
Everything it's probably pretty obvious for many of you but I leave this here for noobies like me! :victory:
Thank you 69PerTTu69.
Did you have keep your data partition?
I have understood you have only install system partition. Right ?
If so, I Will try to use your method.
Sounds good. No I only have the temp twrp bootloader pushed from the pc. Untethered it is stock but it's rooted. I'll revert that tomorrow and give this a shot. Cheers.

I have a new 1050F which has finished churning through all the updates to get it from KitKat.
It is now at the level of this update (..S100256_160119..)
I was about to root following the "[HOW TO] Root Yoga Tablet 2 [STEP-BY-STEP] [NOOB FRIENDLY]" 1st post instructions by AndroMAN (which uses a temporary pushed recovery) but I'm now a little concerned since that will put me in exactly the position of you -beluga-.
I'd be grateful if you could let me know how you get on (or if anyone else can comment on whether attempting to root this way is now a bad idea)

Ok, this was a success -
1. Unroot through the SU app (just to be safe)
2. Restart
3. Apply the update through the regular system/settings UI and wait for it to finish
4. Re-root as before (using IntelAndroid-FBRL-07-24-2015 and BETA-SuperSU-v2.67-20160121175247)
Keep in mind that I was on stock bootloader and didn't alter much besides disabling crapware. Deeper modifications may cramp your style.
Cheers

Sorry for the delay, but no. Everything within the internal storage will be lost.
