Ok the market is pissing me off - Fascinate General

Randomly my market stopped installing stuff. I restored since clearing the caches didn't work. I can download and install ONE thing then it just stops installing apps. Doesn't matter what it was that I installed. barcode scanner..drocap..shootme..after that..nothing. Any ideas guys?
Edit: I changed my theme and the market worked for again one download/install. Now it stopped again. Wtf
SCH-I500 - DL09/Deodexed/StupidFast 1150lv/Retrokid GB w/ Accurate Battery

It's "normal" for me to often have to try to install apps anywhere from 1-5 times before they actually permanently install (same goes for updates). And it's been like that for as long as I can remember, regardless of ROM (including after stock Odin flashes). I've just surrendered to what seems to be an Android reality (well, sort of... my Droid 1 never did it). It sounds like your situation is the same and if it is (does the app often download but then just disappear before installing?) -- just keep trying to install the app(s) and eventually they'll take.

Yeah that is what is happening but I've tried about 30 damn times lol

Now it is working no problem..jeez

The new market seems to be quite a bit slower and pretty buggy. For example my market no longer auto updates, which is annoying. Hopefully it will work better with 2.2 as it seems like most things Google is coding now a days.

The verdict - XWJG5 vs XWJM2?

This is a thread that could become irrelevant at any time with the release of a new firmware, but..
In people's experience, which if these firmwares is faster, more stable, and less laggy?
I have a Galaxy that I upgraded to JM2, but I'm not playing around with it much as it's a present for somebody - I just wanted to have it up to date when I give it to them.
So I haven't seen the difference in daily usage. Any thoughts?
On just playing around on the home scree, adding and removing widgets, they both seem pretty fast.
Thanks guys
I've not really benchmarked the different roms to be honest, but I have JM2 and have noticed that the phone lags a little when opening, closing and working within various apps.
3Banana notes is quick for me, whereas Seesmic lags when I hit 'compose' for a new tweet. The default media player is pretty snappy opening, as is the market, but other apps are slow...
Not sure whether it's a phone thing, a rom thing or an app thing.
i flashed from JF3 stock to JM2 and notice its a little quicker in day to day activitys but i still get the app lag when opening certain apps like mentioned above.
I think no firmware so far in entirely lag-free! You DO need the sdcard fix!

I don't apply any of the firmware updates, but just SD card fix. Rarely notice big lagging now.
For me, JM2 gives me the best performance. I'll give it a day or 2 to see if I even need the sd card fix.
I ran the Quadrant Standard bench on JM1 and JM2. While the JM1 got a 940 result the JM2 gets only 880 points, and it sims a little slower than the JM1. Even the accelerometer turns the image after a longer period. Both have a very good memory management, sometimes I get 270 MB free out of 326MB, and it stays in the range without the need of a reset after a long period of use.
I have heard the card fix really works...but the process seems very complicated to me. Perhaps I'm just a numbskull, but I dont understand how to do it...
...I dont want to do stuff that will brick the phone, unless I really know what I'm doing?

I think you have the memory bit wrong - it's showing 270MB USED out of 326MB (at least for me... I've never seen it dip below the 200s.
I just upgraded from XWJG5 to XWJM2. Good thing I ran Titanium Backup first! I didn't realize the flash would wipe all of my data. So far so good.
If you use a kill application the best I have seen so far is around 93MB free as Task Manager restarts by default.
The built in kill application on JM2 only kills battery hog applications which are running not the run of the mill applications running in the background.
Yes, I did notice the native Task Manager.
I have noticed with this firmware that the MarketEnabler is not working. I can't download some of my paid apps.

Use Eris Market fix from the market
Sent using Samsung Galaxy S
I wish it were so easy. I have never had success with Eris. I have had success with MarketEnabler, but the latest version may need an update to work with the latest firmware. Very frustrating though. Fortunately for me before I did the firmware upgrade I used Titanium Backup. Had I not I would have no Slingplayer or other paid apps on the SGS right now.
Back to Eris, I installed it last night well before midnight, cleared the cache, did the reboot and waited until this morning it being a new day, and still no luck.
Hi All,
So I updated from JG5 to XM1 then XM2. Moving from JG5 to XM1 was very laggy and seemed that XM1 might have been on the Alpha release level, it was good but too buggy.
I then upgraded to XM2 from XM1 and found significant improvements. Then I started to notice things that would normally work would not. The GPS didn't work, the market didn't work, titanium back up, kept getting interrupted during restore even when using after a clean reboot. Browsing through the phone was generally slower and menus would take a while to load.
XM2 seems great on first boot, but after you start loading some of your apps in and customize it to work the way you want it to, then you have problems.
I went back to JG5 as it is far more stable and reliable. I might wait till Froyo before I flash again, i've probably done 12 different flashes in the past 2 weeks.
Let me know if anyone has had better luck with XM2.
on my part.. i can say that JG5 is still the fastest and operates more stable than JM2 at stock settings no rooting done.
installed samset 1.6 and seemed to get abit slower in opening applications..
..will go back to JG5 for now.. hehehe
|| disclaimer: other users may experience differently. ^_^ ||
Im wondering why the phone is reporting more than 256MB usable since the current kernel version only allows upto 256MB
I found JG5 more stable whereas I have encountered few issues with JM2, market behaves strangly installed apps not showing status installed. More bugs in JM2, more lagging and apps taking longer to load like sky news i think I will go back to JG5.
JG5 is an official firmware? I mean App market will work without Eris Fix ?
Thanks !
Is JG5 an official firmware on which App Market is working without Eris fix ?
Thanks !

[Q] No Nandroid Backup

Hello all. Well, last night I rooted my phone and then was going to install the original wireless tether app that Jr33 did.
My problem is when I tried to make a backup after it rooted I now get this:
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /cach/update.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted.
From here I can reboot or reinstall but it does the same thing and just brings me back to rebooted with no backup made as far as I can tell. There's never a choice to select nandroid.
Is there something I'm missing here? Is my update.zip corrupted? Or any suggestions on what to do next?
Thanks
did you install Clockwork recovery post-root? That places a new update.zip in your internal SD that is needed for taking and restoring nandroid backups.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I downloaded the update.zip file again. Gives me the same error message.
I think I think I had ROM Manager installed before I rooted but I hadn't run anything in the software yet. (Can't quite remember, slept since then)
Go to Rom Manager, pick the Vibrant as your phone, top option will be to download and install clockwork recovery. Once this is done you can make a nandroid backup inside clockwork recovery... You can use rom manager to boot into it (NOT the stock recovery)
Sent from my Vibrant
That worked. Picked Vibrant as my phone. Then it didn't error out and I could get to the screen where I could choose nandroid. Ran the backup. Rebooted & ran the Mobile AP. It works too. Now maybe lag fix next... Thanks!
^ why bother with the lag fix? Froyo is coming this month... patience.
Mostly because the lag on my phone drives me crazy, I might wait for 2.2 though. Lots of reading before I pull the trigger on the lag fix. Seems like lots of people are on the fence as to if they're happy with it or not and I'm not a fan of unintended consequences.
FWIW, this is my 2nd phone & the first was less laggy than this one, but it drained batteries like no tomorrow. Never got more than 5hrs out of a fully charged battery. This phone has gone 18hrs but usually more like 12.
^ that sounds absurd to me (5 hours)....
when you say "lag"... what exactly are you seeing that makes you say it's laggy? Sounds like a basic question, but if you can, please explain.... Do you mean the app drawer/moving screens, etc.... do you mean opening apps?
I would suggest trying LauncerPro.
It was absurd. I unplugged once at midnight fully charged and went to bed. Didn't wake up in time for work because the phone didn't make it to 6:30 when my alarm was supposed to go off. I exchanged it that day after work.
The "lag" I consider is mostly opening & closing applications. Like when I'm in gmail and I hit the home or back button to go to the home screen. I press & then wait what feels like half a second for the phone to respond. Other examples are in Craigsnotification when I want to mark something as read or want to go back a screen and it just hangs there for a second. The other phone was much faster with this. With this processor I expect applications to open virtually as fast as I can press the icon.
I'll try out LauncherPro, thanks.
Re: lag - I'm not sure, but it seems to me that syncing operations in the background seem to cause slow response times, or lag, if you will.
Might help to look into what applications you have running, ex. Facebook, twitter, etc and try decreasing the sync frequency.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
If you are rooted you may also want to try Autostarts (or a similar app) that will prevent apps from starting during certain tasks (bootup, texts, emails, etc). It may help... I really do not notice the lag people always talk about. I also came from a CM5 G1 to the Vibrant, so perhaps it is relative.
The lag was pretty bad on mine. Black screen for a few seconds as I was switching between apps or opening/closing them. It wasn't like it was the worst thing in the world or anything, but it was definitely enough to notice and gnaw at me daily.
At the time, I thought it was unrelated but the native Email app (which I synched up to my work email) was simply craptastic, to the point of me going back to my work-issued Treo 750 to simply read and reply to emails given how absurdly slow and non-responsive the Email app was.
Anyway, I downloaded RyanZA's One-click Lag .apk from the Market, applied it, and I couldn't be happier with my phone. Now it feels like the phone I expected it to be when I bought it, no more lag, it's super-responsive, and it also fixed my email app issues. The Email app is seriously a night and day difference after applying the lag fix, I really like it now and use it daily.
My wife has an unrooted stock Vibrant (she's not as adventurous I guess) and we both use Launcher Pro. After the Lag Fix I handed my phone to her and told her to mess around with opening up apps, streaming pandora, surfing, etc. She said it was definitely much faster than her phone and more responsive.
Re: possible adverse consequences... well, that's what nandroid backups are for, I guess. Between Clockwork/nandroid backups I've taken, both the rooted and unrooted stock update.zip files provided here at XDA, and the option to flash to stock via ODIN, I felt that those things were enough to mitigate the risk of applying the lag fix to my phone, including the mods I've applied like applying the MobileAP and Captivate camera .zips. YMMV.
This is my first Android phone, coming from Blackberry Curve 8320. I really expected it would be a giant leap in performance considering the Vibrant is 3x faster than the Curve. I about took it back the first day because the Facebook app was so unbelievably slow and lacking features compared to the BB app, I about threw it across the room a few times waiting for things to load.
I was stuck on EDGE with the BB with my d/l speed somewhere around 800kbps compared to I regularly hit 6Mbps with the Vibrant on 3G. Inexplicable to me why it takes as long as it does to function. I'm replacing my cable internet with wireless tethering so the 3G was important to me.
Launcher Pro seems to be a noticeable improvement in speed. I'm going to miss the full screen Updates widget... Have to figure out a replacement.
Most likely I'll pull the trigger on the lag fix, too impatient. If only the GPS worked the majority of the time... Going on a 1500 mile road trip next week and I know I'll be cussing at this thing. Even without GPS on the BB as long as I had internet at least I could always figure out where I was.
Thanks for everyone's responses, very helpful. I'm sure I'll love this thing eventually, hopefully.
OP,
not sure if you tried this but try rebooting into clockwork recovery and doing a nandroid from there. two ways to do that, once you have the clockwork update.zip in sd root:
1. with the clockwork app. option reboot into clockwork recovery
2. turn phone off > turn phone on while holding power and vol +/- > install update zip > you should now be in clockwork recovery

Rapidly losing patience w/ my Vibrant

I got my first Vibrant on launch day with high hopes. Two weeks later I had a new one due the phone freezing EVERY time I opened Google Maps. I've held on to this one now waiting for a GPS fix and JI6 worked great for me....for about the first week. Now its just as bad as ever.
I get an initial fix much quicker, but after about five minutes it loses GPS signal completely and indefinitely. In the past week my phone has begun freezing AGAIN, including three times today alone. Two of the times I would go to unlock my phone and nothing would happen. The screen would remain off, softkeys wouldn't light up, and a long press on the power button does nothing. I have to pull the battery out and reboot.
This is incredibly frustrating because this phone takes nearly 5 minutes to boot (never actually timed it but I have to imagine somewhere close to that). So its a long wait before I can do what I intended to do. I did notice that Shopsavvy was sucking on the GPS signal when I rebooted the phone so perhaps that's what was secretly crashing it (Needless to say, ShopSavvy got the boot after the second freeze).
I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the Maps updates w/ no change. I would bring the phone back but T-Mo doesn't have any other phones I want. My Touch 4G is hideous and I don't want another QWERTY like the G2.
So did I just end up with another dud Vibrant or is there a fix? Would rooting fix my problems? This phone has never been rooted or hacked in any way.
Any ideas???
Short answer: Yes.
Short but longer answer: At least install a LagFix. I got back and forth between stock JI6 and Fusion 1.1 a lot. JI6 with a custom kernel and LagFix is butter. Fusion is even better.
You may have a dud though. I haven't had that many problems except for things I did myself.

I did not know what a real smartphone was supposed to be until I rooted and custom rom(ed) it.
For the first 3 months I had the phone... I was reluctant to root. But ofcourse... It was just another phone... laggy and slow...
Until I rooted and installed Bionix. Now its smooth as butter.
Good things in life are always free. I paid for a suffocated phone... xda developers free services released and refreshed my phone.
Well
I would install Fusion 1.1 with the Core kernel from Sombionix and see if that fixes it. Stock is totally unacceptable.
If it stills sucks, its likely a dud.
You must either be getting dud phones, or you're installing some app that's messing them up(?) I'm stock/unrooted, and very happy. Not that I doubt the happy results reported by folx like those above, but I don't have bothersome "lag" or freezing etc. -- no issues that even tempt me to ROM-swap (I wouldn't have kept the phone if I weren't satisfied w/it stock).
My GPS did used to lose signal as you report; haven't given it a good comparison test since JI6 update.
Well I've rooted using OCLF and also applied the lag fix. No change.
I still find the phone dead 2-3 times a day with no warning. I'll go to wake it up and nothing happens.
Some of you think installing a new ROM with help? How can I do that? The one time I tried using ODIN, it was never able to identify my phone.
Ugh, why can't this POS just work.

Did you make sure you had the Samsung USB Driver for the Vibrant? If you don't Odin won't recognize your phone. Also important to have a newer version of Odin. Like I have 1.7. And last as Odin is a little troublesome, you should have Odin up and running before you connect your phone. Read the Bible in the Dev section for links.
1) Could be a dud, it happens
2) When I first got my Vibrant, it boots up so fast. Its because there are hardly any apps installed that as part of the boot up process, go and check on. I think it has to do with the cache, because once you load it up with apps, the time it takes to get to the home screen is noticeably longer.
Also ShopSavvy is a bit wonky with the gps, so I disabled that setting in the app. But my though is you might have a bad app installed or something funky on the internal/sd memory that its fighting with. I'd say as something to just try for kicks, backup everything, copy memory to your pc, wipe the memory and do a factory reset(You could odin to stock, but you'll lose the Sims app). If things work, slowly add your apps back in.
As for gps, yes before the update it just wouldn't lock or would take forever, but still not be very accurate. After the update(but then also after alot of flashing different roms, then finally just going back to stock), gps works like a champ. But I would also point out that gps is vulnerable to several things. Don't place the phone near any large metal or magnetic object, this will throw the compass off. And always try to have a clear view of the sky, without being in a 'canyon' of buildings. The buildings distort the signal(which in the case of gps is just a signal that tells the time) and can throw off the reading(which is where the a in agps is supposed to come in).

phone randomly reboot / force close

I picked my Nexus S up this am as the store opened at 9am. I powered it on and away it went it had all of my apps dl in minutes.I had to go into work so I just let it charge on my car charger. Got to work and went to start Cardio trainer ( which is an app I use daily for about 3-5 hours per day) it immediately force closed. Force closes each time I try and use it. So i sent message to dev. The next thing I know I get a message saying that Beautiful Widgets geolocation is getting false reading from the GPS and it force closes. The GPS has been spotty. When first initiated it took over 10 minutes to get a lock. Turned it off and tried again and it took 7 minutes. The third time it was about 15 seconds and since then it alternates back and forth from almost instant to minutes again. What concerns me is that the accuracy just bounces back and forth from 32.6 ft to 16.3 ft and anywhere in between and really never stabilizes. This may be normal for this type GPS systems(I don't know) Also I have the old market and cannot find a link for the new market.Wasn't Gingerbread suppose to come with the new market? So far I am impressed with the smoothness of the system but not with the GPS. Also the lInpack scores are lower than on the Vibrant. Appears to be very solid. Anyone else have any of these problems?

phone randomly goes to boot animation screen
Ok, so it appears something is wrong with my phone. Every once in a while, i'll look down on my phone or in the middle of doing something, and it will go to the boot animation screen. Most of the time, the boot animation screen is dimmer than on normal start up. It will eventually go back to the ui, which I will then have to restart my phone because it won't connect to wifi or 3g.
Anyone else had this problem? Think it's worthy of getting a replacement from bestbuy or a glitch that should be fixed with an ota?
I haven't seen anything like this yet, though I suppose I don't keep my eye on my phone constantly, so I suppose it could have happened while I wasn't looking. No WiFi or 3G problems, either.
Sounds like you've got a serious issue there if you're seeing it a lot, though. I would get it replaced. Unless you're running a third-party ROM or some other non-stock mod, in which case dump it first and see if the problem is being caused by that.
Yea I had this happen twice. At gym was changing a track with Bluetooth headphones and went to dimmer bootscreen had to pull battery. And another time I had to reapply all my Widgets on my homescreen. I'm on CM7 rom

I'd look at the software you've added since the phone was purchased as the first primary suspect. Weird widgets, background services, live wallpapers, background syncing app, something like that...
You'd want to wipe/reset the phone before a return anyways, so why not do a factory wipe/reset from the settings/privacy menu, then start off with a fresh phone (software wise)? Be conservative in what apps you install at first, and check for stability; then slowly add back the stuff you'd have one by one and see which app from the Market causes the glitch.
I think that's a bit more fair to Samsung, Best Buy, and whoever ends up with the device as a refurb, than returning what is probably not bad hardware to the store.

Hmmm...and you don't think the fact that you're using ALPHA level firmware that is known to have some bugs in it, might be your problem?
I'd expect that kind of thing with CM as long as it's alpha, and even beta. I wouldn't be surprised with it even on the RC versions. It's experimental until Team Douche releases an actual ready-for-prime-time version.

Random Reboots, we call it on the SGS (samsung galaxy s) side
hoping for the best, it is not the same deadly problem we found on some of the 16GB SGS phones, that eventually lead to the corruption / destruction of the internal SD
but those were the signs.
so i'm really hoping that is not the same problem, else i'll really be pissed with Samsung to produce yet another crappy phone with cheap internal parts.
it should not be, as i saw pictures of the innards of the SNS (samsung nexus s) and it was clearly showing SandDisk for the 16GB internal SD

[Q] Random lock ups freeze

I keep getting random lockups, at least more than once a day, and sometimes several reboots in a row.
It appears that i can happen almost any time, whether it be at a lock screen, while titanium is asking for root, or opening twitter or facebook, even the gmail app. It simply freezes, and requires me to long press the off button and reboot.
Unfortunately, i can't get adb via usb to work on the nook, so i can't get a reliable logcat.
Is this common? I have had two nook devices so far, tranferred the rom over through nandroid and have had lock ups on both, I am flashing regular cm7 nightlies now (emmc), but it occured using phiremod too.
Help?
I never had one, maybe I'm lucky
Have you tried fixing permissions in clockwork?
Sent from my LG Optimus V using Tapatalk
I am having the same problem. I loaded CM7 to my emmc yesterday and I have had it freeze on me a couple of times now. All have been random. I do have performance set to 1.1 and on demand gov set.
So I can just go to ROM manager to fix permissions? Hopefully that works.
EDIT**
Did not work. Was fine, then I uninstalled market updates, connected to wifi, opened the old market, searched for flash and it froze up. Any ideas?
EDIT 2**
uninstalled beautiful widgets (read that somewhere), so far no lockups (fingers crossed).
i had mine lock-up twice last night
i was in dolphinHD and i had just installed swype beta
i have only had 1 time that it has locked up before then in the last 1-2 months that i have had it.
im blaming swype, since i havent had the problem in the past
perhaps not your problem, if you dont have it installed.
I get lockups pretty regularly. It's irritating. Not sure what the cause is. I thought overclocking had something to do with it but everyone else is overclocked and this problem doesn't seem to be common.
How low do you have the voltage settings in tweaks? Having a voltage just barely too low for your CPU can cause a lot of weirdness. Also, it could be any one of the stepping voltage settings, not necessarily either the min/max frequency.
Folks, playing with the voltage settings in nook tweeks is not for the average user. These settings can really bork your nook. That's why you get a warning when you open those settings.
That being said, I have been running cm7 on eMMC for months and have never had a lockup. I am overclocked to 1200 mHz but have left the voltages alone.(cm7.1 nightly 160).
If you are running on eMMC,try fix permissions first. If that does not help, start looking at the apps you are running to determine if one of them might be the problem. Several people have reported issues running beautiful widgets. There are other apps that can cause issues. If you have good backups of all your apps, try removing apps one at a time. In the process, you might learn something about your system.
Worst case, reinstall cm7, wipe data, cache, and dalvic cache. Start over with a clean system and add your apps (apps only, not apps+data) one at a time. This will ensure that a possibly currupt data set was not causing the issue.
The key to a fast, well functioning nook is to start slowly and ensure each change works well before moving on to the next step.
While it's true I have more time than most to play (retired), my nook can run circles around most competitors but only because I took the time to set it up right the first time and I am not afraid to wipe everything and start over.

I fixed permissions some time ago, seemed to help a bit, but i still get the odd lock up or two. I am running Swype and Beautiful widgets(anyone know a good alternative?)
I had been getting irritated by these these random locks up for a while. It seems that uninstalling beautiful widgets fixed the problem for me. I thought it might be that BW was trying to access the GPS, but it still locked up after disabling geo location in BW.

In case you're still interested, BeWeather is a great substitute for BW and FlexT9 in place of Swype.
Also, I had issues with lockups no matter my overclocking and formatting the eMMC and possibly reseating the SD card fixed it.
