[Q] Issues/Questions about rooting

Hi guys,
I was going to attempt to root my recently purchased Desire HD to the custom ROM of LeeDrOiD V2.2f.
I was using these following instructions:
1. Install the latest version of HTCSync.
2. Uninstall HTC Sync, but leave the drivers on. Your Start menu should have HTC. As an additional note, uninstall everything that can and will sync the phone with the computer (like doubletwist) to be safe.
3. Set-up the HBOOT drivers by following the instructions as provided. I'd post a summary here, but they got everything down pat, including screenshots.
4. Go to unrevoked.com, download the latest (Version 3.21 at time of press) unrEVOked one click root, and wait...
5. Do the following in the phone first.
5a. “Settings” > “Application” > “Development” > Check “USB Debugging”
5b. “Settings” > “Connect to PC” > “Default connection type” > “Disk Drive”
5c. “Settings” > “Connect to PC” > un-check “Ask me”
6. Run the unrEVOked package, and it will prompt you to plug your phone in USB debug mode. BEFORE connecting, in the “File” menu, un-check “Disable Security on Phone”.
7. Plug the phone in and follow the on-screen instructions.
8. Phone will re-start at least twice, and the whole process will take less than 30 minutes.
Now I couldn't even get past step 2. It wouldn't boot into HBOOT when I was holding down the power button and the - volume button. I'm assuming I'm doing something wrong so is someone able to give me better instructions on how to do it? I'm not a novice with computers it's just I'm new to android.
Thanks in advance.
STOP!!
Firstly, there is no Leedroid 2.2f for the Desire HD - sounds like you are following the guide for the Desire here! Latest Leedroid for the DHD is v1.2.
The whole rooting process is actually easier with the DHD thanks to Visionary+
Not sure you can get this in the market anymore but I'm sure a quick google search will turn something up
Install Visionary From POB.
(Click the app title below)
Root your device then once rooted make your way here and follow the guide
then your done

Right. Thanks for informing me of that haha!
So basically I just connect my DHD in one of the modes to my computer, run visionary and follow the rest of the steps in the guide?
What rom would you recommend then? I like the sense UI so would like to keep that. If you think Leedroid is good for that then I'll stick with it

I'm guessing I can follow this guide then?

Or is it not necessary and just follow the one you linked me?
P.S. How do you install visionary? Do I place it on my SDCard in a dir called /DHD/ ???

That's the guide I followed and all went well
Visionary runs on the phone not the computer. In fact once the relevant files are copied to the DHD it's possible to root, flash clockworkmod and set s-off all from the phone itself, just read the instructions you linked to carefully.
I am using leedroid and loving it as it retains the feel of stock sense but adds so much at the same time. Seems stable so far running with an overclocked kernel and setcpu / ultimatejuice.
I wouldn't worry about kernels until you have your DHD rooted and installed with a custom rom though.
If it's any consolation I was exactly where you are now only a few days ago but once you start to dabble it all becomes clear
Ok cool. Seems pretty straightforward if I make sure I follow the instructions. I shall be doing this tomorrow then
Another quick question, i'm guessing clockwork recovery manager lets you select which rom/mod you wish to use/run and it installs it for you? Or am I misunderstanding that?
Rom manager or nandroid is the easiest method of installing custom Rom, clockworkmod recovery just makes it possible after s-off. Clockworkmod can be used to flash the zip from SD card though, quite right.
Ok so I plugged my phone into the computer and selected "Disk Drive" and copied the main folder across to the main dir folder. Rebooted the phone and I cannot find visionary in the menu anywhere.

How to enable non-market apps

I was playing around with my flipout and thought I'd share
You can use the method described in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=738376 to enable non market apps in the flipout. The only difference is that you need to go to cd /data/data/com.motorola.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
using something like SQLlite to edit this file, change the value of the field: force_only_market_apps from 1 to 0.
Hope this helps
-M
Ehm... Settings->Applications->Unknown sources!
ahh my bad. Should have clarified. This is for the "locked" at&t version of the flipout that lacks the option :-D

All att android phone are LOCKED to non-market app. ( on purpose )
You have couple choices...
1. flash your phone to retail firmware via RSD
( then problem solved, not to mention you can also bypass motoblur )
2. Root your att phone and use "adb install xxxx.apk" to install your non-market app.

this method does not work on locked flipout, like the AT&T one, among other. I just though I would share how I was able to root and side load apps even without changing any data files.........
First and foremost...i used this app as I have a Sony Xperia X10.....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746
I would suggest using version 0.2.8 as the newer version, which is what I have, asks you multiple times what device is connected, and since this flash tool is for the Sony Xperias's, it only gives you the option of the five different versions that are out now. I just kept suing the X10, as that is the phone I have on hand.
With this tool, I was able to Root the Flipout with just a click, and also use the newer version (0.2.9.1) too install apk's. ( sorry, so let me correct myself, download the latest version, and just continue to choose X10)
ALL CREDIT IS TO GO OUT TO THE DEVELOPERS OF THIS FLASHTOOL BIN4RY AND ANDROXYDE.....DONATE TO THEM IF POSSIBLE
It worked for me and I hope theres a way soon to be able to flash this flipout to be able to atlease remove all the clutter at&t apps, and non essential apps, like motoblur, AND have everything working, atleast for my fellow US AT&T and T-Mobile users........

[RESOLVED] Android Market Problem

Hi;
Google doesn't allow to use android market in Turkey yet.. Therefore i have tried to install with using different method
I did following steps to install android_market
* I made root with using Visionary
* I made S-Off and Radio-Off (I check that in boot screen)
* I Installed Root Explorer
* Run, Root Explorer as Super User.
* I tried to copy android_market.apk from SdCard to under Systems\App folder with using Root Explorer.
* Root Explorer gave "System is Read Only" error message.
My HtcDesire Hd Build number is 1.42
How can properly install android market ?
Thanks
When you are in root explorer, there is a button at the top of the screen which says 'Mount R/W' you must press that before being able to copy into the system/* directory. Hope that helps
Hi, i had 1.42 non-market DHD yesterday. I just downloaded HTC Sync and a 1.32 WWE RUU in exe format. Plugged DHD in debugging mod and ran RUU. Program did what should do and in 10 minutes I got a market enabled DHD. No root or s-off.
Moreover market will be avaliable officially in Turkey soon. HTC Turkey waits for related.files from global to update phones in stock but I am not sure when will it arrive by OTA.
First of all thanks for replys

I asked HTC Turkey, how to install android market to my pda but they offered me to search internet on this subject. Unfortunetly, I encounter the first time you mentioned method on the internet. Anyway could you give me1,32 WWE RUU address. I have already downloaded "RUU_Ace_Vodafone_UK_1.32.405.3_Radio_12.28b.60.140%20e_26.03.02.15_M3_release_155032_signed.exe" . Is it solve my problem ?
Go in the developement section, open the sticky roll-up thread and there is a link to the DHD files.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Google: RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.32.405.6_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_155891_signed.exe
get the first link from uploading.c om
And do not forget to first install HTC Synch and let it find the drivers (both in debuging enabled and disabled - charge only)
Some Turkish tech news sites say Android Market is available in Turkey. Great news. I hope we get the OTA soon.

[Q] One-Click Rooting Stock Android 2.1

Hi there,
Newcomer to the forums - go easy guys!
I'm wondering what's the safest one click .apk I could use to root my LG GT540 using the stock Android 2.1? If possible I would like to revert back to a unrooted device within oneclick as well.
The only reason I am interested in rooting my device is to overclock it - by adding more power when needed, and to lower the frequency when I'm not using it.
Any help is appreciated guys, thanks!

Sorry, but you cannot overclock the phone without installing a custom kernel. But for rooting your device, I recommend z4root, it gives you the option to un-root too. Download the .apk from here: http://www.gamefront.com/files/17562655/z4root.1.3.0.apk/
Just put it on your SDCard and install with either APKInstaller or ASTRO File Manager from the market.
Hope it helps,
Jack
Okay, thanks!
Sorry to double post, but what benefits can I get from rooting my device?

You will have full control over the android filesystem with certain root apps (eg. Root Explorer) but rooting is actually quite secure, you have to allow or deny apps when they request superuser access. It will also allow you to WiFi Tether so you can use your phones internet connection on your computer (Your phone broadcasts a wifi signal that your computer can use for an internet connection)

Hi there, thanks for your help so far! Would I be able to change the top white bar (where the battery icon is) on my now rooted Android 2.1 stock?

For that you will have to find and download a moded/themed framework-res.apk .
You will also need to instal SDK tools and ADB bridge on your computer ( there are many tutorials on the net - google it )
After that you simply connect the phone to PC via USB cable , open cmd on PC and give the next comand :
adb push [directory of framework-res.apk ] /system/framework/framework-res.apk
adb reboot
For example - adb push C:\Downloads\framework-res.apk /system/framework/framework-res.apk
adb reboot
if you have any more questions feel free to ask

The Xperia X10 Rooting Toolkit also works flawlessy with the Samsung Galaxy Note and gives you full root access (tested by myself)
Just follow the instructions to root/unroot the device here

Worked for me! It was even easier than rooting an HTC Evo 4G. This thread, or at least the thread referenced in the first post, should be stickied in the Development sub-forum.
I am a Noob and I can Root my Note!
I had experience rooting a Milestone 2 with SuperOneClick and an unbranded Android Tablet with Z4Root. (Thanks to developers of these!)
Unfortunately, both these methods did not work on the Galaxy Note so I came here and found this thread.
Unfortunately, ADB drivers was an issue with the zergRush Exploit on first run. The easiest way to get around this is to install PDANet on Windows and have it install the drivers for you. No need to complete the whole installation, just watch when it's finished installing USB drivers and then when prompted to continue, just cancel. Then re-run the zergRush Exploit and it should do its magic (Again thanks to the developers who work on these!)
While I'm able to freeze some apps with ROM Toolbox, I'm unable to change boot animation or the battery icon. Would appreciate if anyone could help with this!
Rooting hav no relation to install official/crckd version of apk.
Rooting needed for those application which are needed to access your system data e.g backup etc
when you need to install these kinds of application (weather off/unoff) you needs Root.
The optional unrooting package works also perfectly (just for info)...
i have sent back my Galaxy Note to amazon just to wait for the white version of the Note.
This method won't increase your binary counter, so root and unroot it as often as you like
Never either had any problem at all after rooting it, so this method is also stable and won't crash your device in any way or crash any applications...
Root confirmed working here, superuser.apk doesn't have permissions set properly but still works, easy to fix, updates fine from market.
Awesome - confirmed working. This needs to be stickied... other websites are promoting netchips CWN kernel method instead of this MUCH simplier way.
For you noobs with a clean system (that means me!), get the following files:
Note I run a 64 bit windows box, get the 32 bit variants if necessary.
You need:
1) Latest version of Kies
www.samsung.com/ca/kies/index.html
download file for me was: Kies_2.0.3.11082_152_4.exe
2) Java:
www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html
Click on jdk and download. File for me: jdk-7u1-windows-x64.exe
3) android sdk:
developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
My file was: installer_r15-windows.exe
4) zergrush root script
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859
grab the zip file in that page i.e.
DooMLoRD_v1_UNROOTING.zip
and unzip it to your windows box.
Install 1, 2, 3 in that order.
Find the SDK Manager program in your sdk install directory, double click it, and download/update 'Android SDK Platform Tools'.
Note you can't run the sdk manager program from the command prompt, or it'll complain that directories are being locked.
Now follow the instructions on the zergrush page, i.e. do the 'before you begin' stuff.
Go to the directory where you unzipped the doomlord zip file, run the runme script from a command prompt, and that's it.
To test, download terminal monitor, run it, and do a 'su' then 'id' and see if it says you are root or not.
Good luck!
- Frank
