[Q] Where to get a Dell Streak replacement screen? - Streak 5 General

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I would say I entered the infamous "Hi, I broke my phone screen" club, except, I didn't personally break it, the phone mysteriously broke itself while in a locker at work, intriguing to say the least.. Lets hope the cameras say the same thing
So, where can I purchase a replacement screen? And also, can you point me in the direction of instructions on how to replace it? A quick forum search revealed nothing, and google isn't being much help either.
Just in case it matters, I live in Australia so a service will likely be prohibitively expensive, and I do have experience with electronics and soldering so replacing shouldn't be a problem.
For academic interest, the gorilla glass is perfectly intact, just the LCD is broken in the top left corner, not that it matters when the glass is glued to the screen, but as an FYI please take care.
Thank you in advance,
TjLusco

This is the ifix it tear down: http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Dell-Streak-Teardown/3512/1
It should be helpful, it is the only thing I have found on taking the streak apart.
As for getting a screen, I would say your best bet is probably ebay.

My Touchscreen is not responding! What Now?

Hi everyone, after 18mths my HTC Touch (Elf) touchscreen has stopped working! I did a soft reset and hard reset, but now in the hard reset it asks me to touch the screen to setup Windows Mobile, however I cannot do it as the screen does not work!
There is no cracks or even scratches as I use the screen protector. I have been reading about LCD's & Digitilizers, but cannot work out which one I need..
Can someone please help me. I want to buy a kit off eBay to repair it but not sure exactly what I need.
Any help will be great!
Do you guys think US$200 is a good price for a HTC Touch Duel with no scratches, as new ? I can buy one for this price, but have never used a dual, and would love my original htc touch to be fixed...
About mine:
- 18mths Old
- No scratches or damage
- Slight corrosion on the plastic where sim card etc goes, not internally but just on the mirror type plastic there is slight green corrosion but it can clean off easily.
- never been in water or anything like that!
Touch screen does not respond to touches anymore, this happened over about 2wks.. it started to not work now and again, then it switched off automatically a couple of times over that period... now it is not responding at all for about 10 days now!
I took to vodaphone and it is out of warranty, I am insured, but it is a load of bullcrap to get insurance, and even if you do you still need to pay a premium of between $150-$275 (AU$) so i might aswell either juszt pay to get it fixed or do it myself.
Cancelling Insurance on this phone ASAP, never getting insurance ever again, only for the first 12mths if phone is over $1000
insurance is lame, and only benefits if phone is lost or stolen.
cheers any1 that can assist me!
You need a digitizer, about $20 from eBay, easy to replace, just see Service Manual for HTC Touch. Better still if you'll get the entire front faceplate with digitizer already attached, simply because it makes your life a lot easier, all you'll need to do it connect the digitizer and assemble the unit.
thankx so much enigma1nz, i was thinking only the digitalizer was needed, but what is the diff between the lcd & digitalizer? I mean in functions etc.
thanku so much for ur time.
I will be ordering the replacement peices, do you think I should do myself or take to a repairer. I am tech savvy, I build PC's, replace RAM etc.. so it should be easy, yea?
cheers

LCD is the screen itself, it shows the information, digitizer is responsible for the touch function. It is relatively easy to replace, simply because the design of the device allows for direct connection with no soldering involved. There is a service manual with photos floating around somewhere, I think even on this forum. Just search for it.
Thanks Enigma1NZ, I actually got a pdf of the dissasemble guide for the htc touch, so should be perfect, I just ordered a digitizer off eBay for only AU$13.60 inc. delivery, so that is awesome!
I got a call from my insurance company today, they want $175 excess if the phone is 'approved' for insurance, plus they kill the imei number too, i told her not to worry and I'm cancelling insurance (already paid $180 all up).... damn rip off, maybe okay while in warranty, but otherwise I will not be making that mistake again!
I will keep ya'll updated, and will be videoing me pulling apart & replacing so I will upload it 4 others too.
P.S enigma, love ur photos posted in myspace.. nice work
I love Touch for the simplicity and straightforwardness of its build, I was surprised the housing was so easy and reasonably cheap to replace (I am thinking of getting mine in red...or purple...). The worst digitizer replacement has to be for 1-gen Iphone and LG Prada. Blasted capacitive screens are the way of the future though and are pleasure to use.
Thanks, i got you added. Let us know how you went. Insurance companies are a bloody rip-off artists playing on our insecurities. I deal with them often when it comes to repairs. Makes no sense to insure after a warranty period simply due to technology depreciaton - you end up paying more in excess than the device is worth at the time.
Yeah the phone looks fairly simple in its housing, I have played around with it a bit... I was actually seriously thinking about replacing my housing while I was in there to white, since I saw the Magic I love the whiteness! I would love a silver housing though, that is the ultimate but have only found white so far.
I will keep you'all updated here with photos 'n video with what I do change.
I was going to buy a prada actually, I think the screen and whole look is amazing, It was tempting but I am very satisfied I chose my touch over the Motorola Razr, Prada and Touch... Touch wins
Cheers again enigma1nz.
I heard LG screens lose sensitivity over time.
Hi, a friend of mine talked to me yesterday about his touch. It seems he has the same problem of the digitizer stoping to work.
Where can I find the service manual and do you know of a good place to buy the digitier?
Tanks!

There's a sticky topic at the top of this forum with several service manuals that you can use. As for buying the digitizer, ebay and dealextreme.com have them for cheap.

Cracked LCD Screen on 614C

Hiya guys.
Ive just found my precious 614c with a rather nasty crack in it after my toddler got her hands on it, the crack is on the right side, it looks like it was bitten, and it's caused about 5 cracks in the screen. i only bought the damned thing in march - but what do you suggest? there is no other damage to the machine at all that i can see, just the screen is broken.
Advice / tips would be very much appreciated.

Pretty sure warranty does not cover screen damage
http://www.ipaqrepair.co.uk/ipaqpart1421.html
seems like its a hard repair. Unless your good with soldering.
sadly it is the LCD itself its bleeding badly into the display - i think i'm screwed aren't i
I shudder to think how much it will cost to repair from HP; though i will enquire before looking into repairing it myself.
if you have anything else i could try i'd really appreciate it. i'm away to a foreign country for a long time in june and it looks like i'm screwed now without this phone

ask at HP, some models are covered by a special warranty. I had broken my screen too and HP exchanged my broken phone with a new one for free.
you can buy the lcd and screen dgitizer and repair it yourself. I had this same problem and managed to buy it and repair using very detailed step by step guides all from this site:
http://www.repairhppda.com/lcd-with-touch-digitizer-for-610-series-p-523.html
all up costing under $100 delivered.

[Q] My Luck

Does anyone know where to get a replacement screen for the Streak. I know the LCD screen is bonded to the front glass for extra strength, so I will have to replace both. I contacted Dell and they said I would have to buy a whole new device because they don't offer repairs for the device.
Any help would be great.
For now your best bet is to keep your eyes open for a faulty Streak for sale. Over the coming months you'll find screens etc become available from China.
Thanks for the response. I was afraid this was the case. At least my streak is still useable as just the front glass broke. Nothing like trying to read between the cracks in the glass lol. Thanks though.
I have seen 2 or 3 floating around on Ebay, Screens that is.
Called Dell a second time today and they told me no managers were available to talk to me. They insured me that they are working on repair options for the device though. Made me feel much better HA HA
Guess I'll have to wait a while and deal with the cracks. Thanks to all who replied.

Dell streak screen cracked by minor drop with no casing damage, dell repair for FREE

Hey guys if anyone out there manages to drop or otherwise crack their screen simply call dell mobility in usa (dont tell them you droped it) and play on that you have read all over the internet about how people believe that the inner lcd is under pressure and you have noticed the sensitive corners of the screen anyway and that one day you simply pulled your phone out of your pocket and the screen was cracked an "hey presto" the call agent will arrange to have your phone shipped to budapest an a FREE screen will be inserted.
Only done with a phone with a pristine casing due to a minor drop so dont know what the outcome would be with a phone with any case damage please post if anybody tries and succseeds with this one and hope it helps someone out ther with the same problem I had.

Told them I dropped it. They fixed it

Yeah. thats what I did the first time. this time they called me back (what happened to fridays??) told me it would cost $249 to fix. Gonna call mobility back rather than dealing with these indian assholes and see if a well worded and polite hissy fit will get them to change their tune.
I had the same problem and was told it wasnt covered under warrenty, under any circumstance.
Yeah called the always wonderful folks at the actual mobility number and got nowhere. Emailed the "executive solutions" folks. Sorry Dell, if your phone is this fragile even if you replace it im selling it for a more sturdy device. Dropped my captivate regularly and nothing happened, 2 drops should NOT equal 2 broken phones.
I thought this screen on this phone was supposed to be damn near industructible? All I hear about. Is cracked screens in hope this otter box is worth the. Money

same here also sent a letter direct to michael dell and his office and the consumerist and engadget.
Its VERY frustrating when you see stories all over these forums and streaksmart having their devices replaced no problem...
My letter is here:

Seems like a simple change in policy at Dell, what they used to do they no longer do. Folk will just have to take better care of their Streaks from now on.

The glass is pretty durable, for some the LCD shatters when they look at it wrong.

Ah ok, lots of people were hounding him about the lack of details leading to release, musta mixed you up with someone else.
Does anyone else feel that this isn't simply a matter of people not being careful with their phones? Until this one I had NEVER broken a phone in my life, with one exception (my first nokia i left in a cupholder in an open top jeep on a rainy night). And now i've broken 2 in less than a month with falls that my captivate or iphone would have shaken off without even a scratch. Hell my iPad with a larger screen has taken worse falls and no damage at all. I feel a little duped here, I bought a phone that retails for $599 (IIRC) and it was advertised as having one of the sturdiest builds ever due to the gorilla glass. I have found, however, that in most cases while the glass doesn't even scratch, the LCD is absurdly fragile and doesn't hold up to even light falls.
Both of mine were less than 6" from the surface they fell on, and the 2nd one was in an Otterbox, and the screen STILL did not survive.
I wish there was a way to really press dell on this. I've called, emailed the "unsolved service issue" folks, and it appears even Michael Dell has been addressed in all this, and nobody at dell will budge. We need some negative PR to hit this hard. Screw antennagate, I wanna see SCREENGATE all over engadget and gizmodo.
NEWS!
OK so I just got off the phone with Dell Mobility. BTW if i haven't mentioned it yet, I absolutely love their customer service skills. Always friendly, always willing to take a minute to really discuss the issue, and always want to help.
Well Kim over there told me that the official policy is that they'll replace one, but after that you get kicked over to the out of warranty folks. HOWEVER! she also said that they'd recently gotten a few emails kicked down to the department from higher up telling them to authorize a handful of replacements for 2nd, even 3rd broken units. She told me the key is to get on to the official dell forums and complain everywhere that seems appropriate. She also acknowledged it was a known issue and dell is working quickly to fix it.
Now for the "here's what to do" advice she gave me regarding the forums. She said the key is to NOT rant and rave, because the moderators will sometimes just delete them. If you go on and post a well written complaint that essentially explains in detail why your upset and why you feel dell is mistreating you, they ARE read daily by folks higher up in the food chain and they will regularly pass information to the frontline folks and basically say "Fix this and make the customer happy".

[Q] where to fix broken screen??

i dropped my dvp yesterday. the screen is broken and cannot display anything. it just display some random colors. if you guys know any place to fix it, please tell me. i live in Sydney.
I think the only solution so far is to call dell and make them fix it to you
no one is selling any spare parts for DVP yet, just accessories
or try to buy a bricked phone fron e-bay and take its screen
good luck
I agree with the above - the first place to try is Dell, to see whether they can fix it (or suggest someone who can).
If you want to try fixing it yourself, I think it is possible to buy spare parts. Saw a blog post about this where someone replaced his screen. His screen was broken but his gorilla glass 'lens' was undamaged. The article mentions where he got his replacement screen, although it's a UK website.
http://blogs.technet.com/b/roblarso...-a-broken-lcd-screen-on-a-dell-venue-pro.aspx
The service manual probably gives a good description of disassembling a DVP too. (It also lists the part number of the screen, if you want to try finding another source).
If both the glass 'lens' and screen need replacing, it might not be much cheaper than buying a used DVP.
