Is there a way to verify I'm on HSPA+? My area supposedly has it, but my G2's status still shows HSDPA. Is the phone actually connected to HSPA+, but the UI just doesn't reflect it?
The stock rom won't show you the difference between HSPA+ and 3G. You'll only see H, E, or G.
If your willing to root and use a rom like CM, it will show you a 3G icon when its 3G and H when its HSPA+
I don't know how to tell other wise. Sorry.
There is no practical way to distinguish between HS[D|U]PA and HSPA+.
Well, unless you count all the widgets out there that will tell you.
The one I use is called "mobile signal widget"
i have stock rom and i see sometimes 3G or H on my HTC desire Z
Running latest OTA
My desire z only shows 3G or H.

As far as I understand, you will still not be able to tell the difference between HSPA+ and HSPA. I do not know of any definitive way to tell whether or not you are using the HSPA+ protocols.
How does cyano does it on his roms? I would like my icon to be right but I prefer stock rooted roms

The bell site shows my area as having HSPA+ coverage but my desire z only ever shows HSDPA or UMTS when I view network setings. I know I saw someone else's post saying their stock Rom actually said HSPA+ in the status bar when they were connected to it.

Go to phone satus under settings. UMTS = 3G and HSPA = "4G"

Now it keeps switching between UMTS and HSDPA every few seconds. Anyone ever had that issue?

So, I just text from t-mo telling me that they're new network had made my phone faster, but so far I haven't noticed a difference. Anyone else get a text out notice some speed increases?
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
Download the SpeedTest.net app, do a couple tests and post your speeds here. I work for Tmo and we have HSPA+ at the call center (very congested cell site), and I have gotten up to almost 5Mbps download speeds there. On regular 3G I get only like 1Mbps max.
1.46/d & 1.29/u best out of three, with full signal and 3G. I ran it earlier, right after I got the text, and it wasn't nearly that fast-
Stupid question- will the data indicator say something other than 3G when on an hspa+ network?

"H" if you're on the new radio
Ok, so the 'H' just means hspa. I think whether or not it says 'H' or '3G' depends on the rom you happen to be using.

Yes, you are correct. I figure that T-Mobile made the hspa icon 3g was so that people didn't get confused between gprs, edge, and 3g. Some roms will have editted the icon so that it will show an h. It's something along those line.

Where are these networks located? I barely get 3G as is, phone constantly changing from G to E and really pissing me off.
The new radio alone will not make it show the H. I didn't get the H until I flashed CM6, now I always see it. I don't have HSPA+ around my home, but at the Tmo call center, I have seen up to 4Mbps download, and it's pretty congested there.

Hello,
I was wondering if there was anyway to strictly run off of 3G? I was using cm6.1 rc 2 for a bit but noticed it switches constantly between H and 3G.. and in return rapes my battery. While rooted with setcpu profiles I get 5-7 hours more battery life while running on only edge. Anyone have any ideas?

Switching from edge to 3G is a lot different from switching from 3G to HSPA+ which uses the same technology. Cyanogen just made the signal icon more accurate, because the stock rom doesnt differentiate between HSPA (3G) and HSPA+. ANybody with a standard 3G phone will tell you that running solely on 2G will save you a ton of battery. The difference from 3G to 3.5G (HSPA+), however, is negligable.
Either use 2G or use HSPA... i agree cyanogen should have an option to stop differentiating 3G fro 4G since it can be distracting.... and ignorance is bliss afterall.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using telepathy and unicorn dust!
so wait im running cynogen mod RC 2 will it give me a 3G icon instead of a H cuz i always get confused whether im on 3g or HSPA+(3.5g)
You can do this actually... search for the thread about editing the radio settings in system/build.prop
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
And there is really no battery damage from 3g to hspa switching. U could just enable 2g only in settings.

is this a general g2 problem or is tmo really terrible lately. i traded my hd2 for my g2 because i wanted 4g, otherwise i would have kept my hd2. but i rarely will see speeds over 0.30 mbps! and thats when on 3g. as well i never seem to get hspa+ in the 4g coverage area. (does android display hspa+ in the network info?)
is this a problem with my phone or radio?
Lol the orginal stock rom that come with the phone lies about 4g symbol. If you flash like cyan 7 for instance it will show you the correct symbol if it is really 4g/3g/2g. Oh yea flash a diffrent radio

Depends on your area really. I average 1.5 mps at home running 3G, but when I get near Houston I see a lot of H+ with speeds up to 9 mps. Oh, and I've tried every ROM save for a few of the Sense based ones and they all show G/E/3G or H. I've never seen an H+ symbol even when running obvious H+ speeds. I tried a sense ROM once and it would show me 3G+ when available, but that's it.

The H means hspa+. I live in austin texas and I always get H with speeds average at around 6Mbps. If anything I would say the G2 has pretty good reception. Reason being is, I had the same issue with poor data speeds becasuse my phone was trying to connect to a tower not even in my local market...I had bad data speeds but voice still had 4 bars. Call tmobile and make sure you aren't bouncing around towers

my phone is rooted. im running the evil's mytouch 4g rom.
this is on hsdpa network. what i hate is that my old hd2 runing android was getting about 1.2 mbps average and the hd2 is supposed to have data problems. so i assumed that when i switch to the g2 the speeds would be even faster(or at least the same), but instead the speeds are lower.
How TO enable 3G no htc DESIRE HD. I am not getting any options in settings to enable 3G . Even in network mode i get gsm and wcdma. Pls help

WCDMA is 3G en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W-CDMA_(UMTS) read the first line
Are you sure about this
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
Yes I'm sure. What else than 3G would it be as GSM (2G) is already separated there in the options? The DHD isn't a 4G phone so it can't be that.
In what way do you need to enable 3G ie how did you come to that conclusion that it's not on?
In that case that I misunderstood you and you mean how to enable mobile network then go to Settings -> Wireless & networks and tick the Mobile network box. In order for this to work you have to have the correct APN settings from your network provider.
I turned it on but the problem is sometimes I get H written on data indicator sometimes I get 3G written

Don't worry, H and 3g are really the same thing. Don't believe me? Do a line speed test

That isn't exactly right as there is WCDMA (UMTS basically the most used), HSPA (HSDPA, HSUPA) and various others as FOMA, CDMA and sometimes even EDGE is considered 3G. They all vary in terms of speed and they mostly overlap in cities. So the reason for your test results might be that you have a limited speed from your operator, low signal on a faster network etc.
Someone with more knowledge on the exact htc symbols can explain in to which categories the 3g and H represent. The H symbol means that you are on one of the fastest networks and the next would be 4G but the device doesn't support it.
I think the H shows that the phone is using HSPA connection (currently the fastest 3G standard I think) and 3G and so on when the connection is slower.

You can have 3 different indicators for mobile internet (apart from WIFI) on your Desire HD.
G is very slow, but it's what you get when you have the Network Mode set to GSM only.
H is the fastest you can get when you have Network Mode set to WCDMA Only or WCDMA/GSM.
Whenever you have Network Mode set to WCDMA Only or WCDMA/GSM and it shows 3G, this means H is not available but you are using 3G connection. The speed of your connection is obviously between G and H.
Basically G<3G<H

You obviously have 3G enabled, the H just stands for fast 3G connection.
G<E<3G<H

UMTS/WCDMA is the 3G standard whereas GSM is a 2g standard.
While in a 2G network your phone may show E or G which stand for EDGE and GPRS respectively.
In a 3G network you may get H or 3G which is HSPA(high speed packet access) and 3Generation respectively.
As mentioned earlier by others the speed in increasing order is-
G<E<3G<H.
I hope that makes it clear.

Maybe the 4G tower is down? I'm not sure if roms have to be specially made to support HSPA+ because a) HSPA+ is the same technology as 3G so it should be backwards compatible; and b) the HSPA+ chip in the mytouch is only 14.4 mbps which is the fastest HSPA(3G) chip, not 21 which is HSPA+. I think.

check your coverage map on tmobile.com I have had the same issue and I almost started flaming rom cookers... even on cm7 I get 3g speeds. turns out the part of town I live in has low 4g coverages. Usually stock roms only have the H or H+ icon on the framework. so even when you're on 3g it shows H, even when you're on 4g it shows H. on custom roms notice you have 3 different icons. (or 4) H, 3g, EDGE, (GPRS)
H stands for 4g. mostly on custom roms this shows up when there is STRONG 4g signals
3g shows up all the time even though if a stock similar device such as another mytouch or a g2 shows H.
and edge/ gprs is self explanatory.
some roms may come with kernels that may have botched LIBS that prevent 4g connection (ie cooked roms from european phones like- desire HD etc...). get a friends phone that is similar IE a vibrant 4g, g2 or a mytouch and run speed tests using the OOKLA app on market. You will get the same results when his **** shows H and when your **** shows 3g.
Oh and they and you will be surprised at how much cell carriers lie to us about coverage
I live in North Houston and I can get full 4g speeds 2% of my usage times per month
I did this the other day with similar WHITE MYTOUCHES, one was bone STOCK no root, and one was root with cm 7- royal ginger 1.5
