[Q] TV Tube Sleep - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Found this on iphone developers website...but it originally came off Nexus S, anyone know of a way to get this feature on mt4g?
"Makes your screen turn off like an old TV tube when you press the sleep button. I got a Google Nexus S and noticed it has this cool effect when you turn it off, so I immediately worked on bringing the feature to the iPhone and 3 hours later it was finished. Watch the video of it in action below.
Available to buy in Cydia for $0.99"

You can either wait for HTC to update your phone to Gingerbread or you can root and run CM 7 which already has this effect for screen off and screen on.

What cable do you use?
Not original cable.
I want TV out to work when screen is off.
How to do?

As far as I'm aware, the TV out comes from the screen feed and the audio feed. Therefore, if you do not have any feed to screen there is no feed to TV from the jack socket.
@borchgrevink,
The cable to use is a Nokia TV out cable, can be got in the UK from the bay for less than £2.00

Mvideoplayer app developer responded my email when I asked him if this would be possible:
"...Made a test build with that feature which I tested on my Nexus One with 2.2. It didn't work, when I sat the brightness to 0 the playback stopped and the phone went to sleep (I didn't know that), I guess this is how it works and that means it's not possible. There is no other way in the API to just turn of the screen. It's not allowed. "
Bummer...
I've tried the Screen Filter widget, but it shades the TV screen a well, so, the only way to spend LESS battery is to set the brightness to minimum before switching to your player of choice (in Mvideoplayer you can easily set it via a slider in the GUI).

My 7's performance is kinda sorta terrible. What gives?

I'm not rooted, just running everything the way it came out of the box.
Examples of what I mean:
1. Switching users on the lockscreen takes forever. I tap on my user icon...and I wait. like 20-30 seconds. finally my lockscreen pops up and I can unlock the tablet.
2. Auto-rotate can take a long time too.
3. It takes a while for the lockscreen to be responsive when waking the device up.
Things like that. I'm wondering if it's because I have set up two users on the device. Does anyone else see the tablet lag with multiple users set up?
What should I do? I'm not afraid to root it, but I can't lose multi-user functionality so I'd need a ROM that supports that.

Most people with the 8GB and maybe the 16GB had the multiuser lag problem.

Same thing happens to my sisters and my nexus 7 I'm rooted unlocked and trying new roms and hers is completely stock, I don't know what gives

When you switch users doesn't the entire Android layer restart? (I don't know, never tried multi user yet.)
If that is the case, then it is always going to take about 10-15 seconds less than a cold start boot. On my tablet that would be about 20-30 seconds.
Auto rotate has a delay built in to prevent accidental rotation. Google made this way too long. Whenever I show someone my tablet they tilt it and impatiently tap it until it rotates.

Turn off the Nexus Player?

Hi,
How do you turn off the Nexus player? I can't find an option for it, I had to just switch off the power instead.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

There is no "off" on the Nexus Player, just like the Chromecast. It goes into a low powered standby mode after a few minutes, waiting for any Google Cast connections to wake it up and start playing (with HDMI-CEC enabled on TV or receiver, it'll automatically turn on, switch inputs, etc to start playing your cast immediately).

Like @Elrondolio already mentioned, there is no "Power Off" feature (which I HATE!!!). However, you could look for some kind of switch that you could attach to the power adapter cord so that you don't have to unplug every time that you want to turn the device off...something like this: http://www.adafruit.com/products/1125 (though, I have no idea whether or not that specific cord actually will work...I'm just presenting the concept). I've done this with my raspberry pi and it's awesome!
Another option would be to plug the player into an outlet that is controlled by a light switch (which would be much nicer than the cord IMO).

I'm truly not trying to be confrontational here, simply curious: why do you hate that it's always on (in low power mode) so much?
To me, I see it no different than another phone or tablet in my home as it has nearly the exact same innards... all of my family's phones and tablets are on 24/7 as well, either on battery or charging on the mains. Having to boot up the box for a quick cast to show a quick video/trailer/etc to the family or start playing some music would be an inconvenience, I'd think, as having to wait for a receiver to boot its OS every time would be.
Again, simply curious as to your reasoning is all. Thanks!
Thanks everyone for your explanation.
I also have a Chromecast installed on my TV and I don't have any problem with it being always on WHEN my TV is turned on. However for the nexus player it will be truly always on unless you switch off the main.
I just got my nexus player yesterday so I dunno if it will be warm/hot if it's always on even when not in use. Anyway if it's not warm/hot if not in use then I've got no problem with it.
Thanks again everyone!
I've had my lean back launcher crash a few times, losing recommendations. It would be nice to have reboot

agreed, a reboot option would be nice. a 3rd party app can achieve this with root. such as: power menu

No worries about being confrontational, everybody has there own likes/dislikes...nothing wrong with that. Part of it is the made desire for efficiency that I have...why have something consuming power and bandwidth when it's not being used? Also, the amount of time that I and my family are using it is far less than the time that we aren't using it, if I was using it all day, I might not mind so much. Also, it's nice to do a reboot without unplugging the device, especially since I want to put it in a cabinet that is somewhat of a tight space. But, probably one of the biggest things that comes to my mind is connection to the internet on a 24/7 basis really bugs me. I know that my phone and my wife's phone is always connected...but it needs to be to notify me of things, my TV isn't notifying me of anything, I just want to use it when I want some good old couch potato entertainment, so why take up my bandwidth (I assume that it does some kind of check) and use any amount of power (which I do pay for, no matter how little the power usage is) when it isn't needed?
Personally, I believe that the following principle (highly advocated by Google) should have been followed: "Decide for me but let me have the final say" (http://developer.android.com/design/get-started/principles.html#decide-for-me). In other words, give the option to leave it on all the time for those that want it...but allow for powering off for those who don't. That way, everybody is happy.
I know this isn't an on-device fix, but if you're seriously concerned about your TV accessories only being on when the TV is on, there are many power strips out there that have a "master" outlet that toggles power to the rest of the outlets based on when the master device is on. So turning your TV on and off will switch power to the rest of your devices.
A reboot option would be nice. As for turning the NP off, I am using a TRIPP LITE TLP76MSG Eco Green Switched 7 Outlet Conserve Energy Surge Protector from Amazon.
Just an update, I found that when not in use the player is cool to the touch. As such I believe it goes into a low power/power saving mode. I have no issues with it being always on now. Way to go, google/asus. :good:
Confirmation of sleep mode
My nexus player's light is always on. Does anyone know if this means the unit is on or in sleep mode after the 30 minutes of inactivity? I have set it to 30 minutes and daydream does come on. Based on the manual, when the light is on the unit is on.
Thanks

I think the light just means it has power, so it can be in sleep mode even when the light is on.
This was my main concern yesterday.
(I had since a week ago the Nexus Player but due my Internet provider's laziness, it was not until last night I could FINALLY setup my account and the device).
I noticed the DayDream options but I agree that the same OS needs an reboot option.
Mine doesn't switch back on when the TV is turned on again. Just a black screen and doesn't respond to pressing buttons on the remote.

I recently brought a Nexus Player, I am having the same problem like you. Is this a problem with the software?
Understand that you can't power off the Nexus Player, but will it damage the internal components of the player (flash drive, etc) in the long run if you just simply cut off the power supply, which is apparently the only way to off the device?

I actually got it exchanged at the store. The problem disappeared with the new one (also using 5.1.1). So get a replacement!

Allowing NFC to work even with screen locked (Android Lollipop)

I decided to share this with you since it took me several hours to find it.
I bought some NFC tags to configure some tasks.
For example, I have 1 in my car that when i swipe my phone over it, it connects bluetooth, mobile data, gps signal, set screen bright to maximum and open GPS app.
Problem was, I could not use it with the phone still locked or with screen off making mandatory to be manually unlocked 1st, which takes a bit of the automation of the process (yes, I am very picky )
This post bellow, allows you to detect NFC tags with your screen still locked or off as long your phone has the smart lock feature!
I have a Sony Z2 and a LG G3 and this guide worked for both, thing is, the screen needs to be on, but can still be locked.
This solution worked like a charm for me since to turn on both screens i just need to double tap the screen.
Guide:
http://howto.highonandroid.com/andr...android-smartphone-with-nfc-android-lollipop/
Will work on:
– Nexus 5, Nexus 7, Nexus 10, Nexus 9, Nexus 10.
– Samsung Galaxy S6/S6 Edge/S5/S4/Note4/Note3/Tab S.
– Sony Xperia Z3/Z3 Dual/Z Ultra/Z2/Z1/Z.
– All other Android phones/tablets that SUPPORT “Smat Lock” feature and running on stock Android Lollipop.
I just know I'm going to use this eventually.
As the title says "Allowing nfc to work even with screen locked " It didn't work for me.!
Followed everything.. It just made my phone to disable lock[just swiping without pattern or pin] whenever I pair it to a nfc device.

Simplifying a Nexus 7 to Leave With A 95yr Old Dementia Sufferer For Video Chatting

I have a friend that is 95 years old who suffers from Dementia. She broke her hip this last weekend and is in the hospital an soon will transfer to a rehab care place. Dementia is ****ed. You get to watch a person slowly disappear. I don't get to see her as often as I would like and sadly only one other person goes to occasionally visit her. So my idea is to limit the N7 to just basically a simple 1 step procedure for her to be able to alert me to start a video chat or where a nurse could easily start it up for her. I thought i was going to write a camera program but reality and my lack of skills hit real quick. I have about 4 hours to make this happen and I was hoping yall would help with what apps and/or tweaks i could quickly setup to make this possible. I have aosp_grouper-7.1.2-ota-20201107.eng.ds.zip that I just installed.
main thing i need to be able to do is for her or a nurse to push a icon that'd alert me to call her back. Also iI'd like to be able to lock the screen on her so no accidently app closures. remoting in would be nice so i can continue to update and improve the tablets functionality. Please help. Thanks.
first this rom sucks..
You should be able to set a video chat app as the kiosk app to lock it down and disable screen lock so pressing the power button unlocks instantly
