Juice Defender With Ultimate Juice Benchmark! - Android Software Development

Hey guys im in the process of doing a little experiment to see actually how much Juice Defender with Ultimate Juice actually improves the battery life on my Evo4G. I'm sure this has been done somewhere else i just couldn't find it so i decided to do the experiment myself and post my findings this may be useful to some people or may not!
Phone: Evo 4G
ROM: Cyanogen Mod 6.1.2
Kernal: Zendroid BFS @ 1.52ghz w/ smartass scaling
Launcher: Go Launcher
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phone running Juice Defender With Ultimate Juice
Phone Unplugged At 11:42am
Phone Died At 8:59pm
Usage: For the most part it was moderate use, no gaming, 2 calls lasting for a total of aproximatly 45 minutes. 120 texts were sent and received 146 within the time frame. There was no browser usage just mostly texting like i said. 3 Pictures were taken. No Wifi. Bluetooth or 4G used either.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phone running without Juice Defender With Ultimate Juice
Phone Unplugged At: 2:50pm
Phone Died At: Never
Usage: Well my phone has been unplugged since 2:50pm and its now 12:35am and my battery is sitting at 55%. Weird... very weird. I had about the same usage as yesterday i played 1 game for a total of probably 10minutes and installed 4 apps. A had wifi enabled for probably an hour total.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Final Thought: I think Juice Defender doesnt help at all, infact it seems to hurt your battery more than anything. I think it may be because its constantly turning things off and back on consuming battery? Thats the only thing i can think of. Does anyone else have any thoughts on why this is? Using Juice Defender reduced my battery life dramatically it almost cut its life in half as a matter of fact. Please share your thoughts on why this is people!

thanks for the info. i try to tell people that juice defender doesn't help. but no one listens so i gave up and just tell them cool app and walk away lol.

very helpful post. I noticed too it doesnt seem to really help it just monitors mobile data and turns it off when screen is off and occasionally powers it on to download emails and ****. I dont like it because i like to kno when i get an email instantly versus it checking every 30 min.

I also found that juice defender seemed to have a negligible impact on my battery life while also decreasing speed of sync/convenience. You'll notice that it also makes android system skyrocket towards the top of the battery use list.
On a related note, I also found that setcpu profiles don't have an impact on battery life and may even hurt.
Ultimately, android is optimized to manage a lot of these things on its own and introducing an app that consumes battery both monitoring and brute forcing some of these activities doesn't make sense. The only active monitoring app I use now is Tasker for some specialized automation activities.

i cant believe this is an app that most people recommend to improve battery life tho. Especially with how much it hurts rather than helps. Very disappointing.

It has helped mine because I use the widget to manually shut it off and on. I don't let it control it. Since the epic doesn't have the shut off data in the power menu its good for me. Otherwise I agree with you all. I keep my data off until I need it to look something up. Personal preference. But hey it does shut my data off when I tell it to.

I had been using juice defender and setcpu for a while trying to get the best battery life, but I ditched them both about a month ago and I'm getting better life than ever before lol
I've got 58% left in the battery and the phone has been up for 32 hours. I thought I was helping by micromanaging the phone with JD but I think it was really just hurting it.

32 hours up and only down to 58%? Mind if I ask how you set thigns up that your phone is so energy efficient?

It was a great application, Donut times, it literally made my Magic 32a survive the day against the not-even-a-day battery life at those times. Nowadays it is simply useless due to android better app management.

Hmmm...I have been using this for a few months now and I've seen dramatic improvement in my battery life. I usually unplug my phone at 7 each morning and by noon on moderate usage days I'm at 60%. Using JuiceDefender, my phone is typically at 80%. By 5pm with its only at %60. Normally I would get home at 5 and it would be around 30%. Interesting.
Running Samsung Captivate
Stock Android Eclair 2.1
Rooted
Zeam Launcher

With more iterations of Android they are improving power managment, Ya back a little bit ago this helped some people alittle it closing out processes and way to handle things but with android development alot of this stuff is getting worked into the OS, basically now all your doing is running a app constantley that does something handled by the OS now in newer builds.
I wonder in some cases if the juice defender and the OS both trying to do power management if it can actually cause more power loss due to a conflict in the two trying to controll items. Of course OS should have higher pid but could cause some of your increased power drain using both

try the beta

im using it on my epic and my evo i think it helps both but i am also using the free beta i dont think the regular one works

i'm shocked there's even a thread for this. i put it on a stock epic and it made a WORLD of difference.. especially in locations where my signal was poor and evdo service kept dropping. my issues with it are of a different nature. seems to get corrupt alot and the wifi locations service sucks

Hmm, i'm confused on how this could actually hurt battery life, especially by the amount you displayed unless you have it doing all kinds of other management as well. I have mine setup to only manage the data APN, disabling on screen off, and seem to have gained decent battery life from it. The widget to toggle data on/jd on/off is very handy as well.
Pretty sure android doesn't do anything natively that turns off data when phone is at rest/screen off, does it? Someone please correct me if i'm wrong.
I will admit, the new versions of JD do seem to be pretty bloated and sluggish.. i've been on the fence of whether to remove or not... The main reason i keep it on my device is because i work in a basement and get about 65% TWS and severe battery drain from that. With JD managing 3G, it helps mitigate that somewhat, and having it be automatic is much more convenient than toggling it manually all the time.
I may have to join you on some testing, because if JD is not gaining me anything, i'll definately be removing it as it sometimes causes some initial sluggishness when turning the screen on. From daily usage experiences (and i watch it like a hawk), my battery life has definately not been made worse.. older versions seemed to net me more life, and i'm undecided on the new versions. Not enough time with it on/off to decide yet.

Most Def Work
JD helps... it will slow down notifications and stuff, if you need always on data then this won't help. However, during the day I'm usually already online and don't need non-stop notifications and if you use JuicePlotter you can clearly see that while sitting idle with JuiceDefender on you use significantly less battery than if you don't have JuiceDefender active and have it sitting idle.

for those that think jd works...
are you using the free, pro, or ultimate version? looking to buy if it really saves battery life.

which configs did you use? I had it a few months ago and my battery did actually improve. Trying some different settings makes a huge improvement.
I am using superpower now. (from XDA actually) And this is really working, it also takes some configuration, but eventually it will benefit your battery life.
Superpower turns data to 2g when your screen is off, disables wifi and bluetooth and sets your cpu to a 400mhz cap (at least with my phone) I noticed a 1% overnight drain and a 200% increase in battery life. (basically I do two days with heavy use vs. one day before)
Hope this helps some people!

The only thing that actually changes the battery in an evo is a kernel. No quick fix app is going to help how your system interacts with your battery! Senseui is garbage and it sucks up battery life like no bodies business!

Getting ready to give up on my Evo because of battery life.

UPDATED MY SETTINGS
So as many other users I've been having lots of problems with battery life. I've done so many things in an effort to try to improve battery life but it doesn't seem to improve as much as it has for other people
This is what I have done:
Installed Baked Snack 9.7
Have brightness set to automatic
Changed the preferred network type GSM Auto (PRL) to CDMA Auto (PRL)
Installed Juice Defender
Installed SetCPU and have it so that my phone is under clocked to 245mhz when screen is off.
Turned haptic feedback off
Turned Off Auto-Sync
Manage my running applications with Advanced Task Manager and have it so that it ends apps every 30 minutes.
Flashed the newest Radio
Reconditioned my battery like HTC representatives suggested
Even with all these changes I'm lucky to get 10 hours of battery with moderate use. Far below the 16-20 hours that other users claim to get.
I don't understand why my battery life is so bad. Any tips? Maybe something I did wrong?

Perform the HTC suggested battery cycling.
Charge until full, unplug, recharge, unplug, recharge, turn off, recharge, turn on, recharge for a few times.
No comment on the battery life as I have no problems but why did you want this phone in the first place if you only text and don't use the internet? I would own a Blackberry or Nokia E71 if I used my phone in that way.

Try running dcpowertop via ADB to see if something is causing a lot of wakes and preventing your phone from sleeping. Also try running Systempanel monitoring to see what is using up the CPU time and draining the battery.
Also, this does nothing unless you are running a custom kernel (You didn't mention if you were, so just sayin'):
Installed the OverclockWidget and set it so that when the screen is off the processor runs at 245 mhz.

He's better off with this deal really, many members have purchased them (including myself) and they perform near as well, or just as well as the OEM battery - but you get 2 of them, AND a charger:

Most batteries above 1500mAh do not even perform close to what they say they should. Check out batteryboss.org for details.

I'll give dcpowertop a try.
I just uninstalled overclockwidget and installed SetCPU instead, the new version has the perflock disabler which should allow me to underclock.
If you are in a sketchy service area, your battery will drain fast.
How much do u use your phone? That's right there the key when other people say ILL GET 16-20 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE. Yes cause they don use it as much as i do, maybe u use.ur phone hardcore too, texting mms back and forward like no joke. Lots of them. I do over 600 just the morning. So my battery die around 2 then i use my hero battery that i have as back up. Its BS when other ones say that they get crazy amount of battery. Yes it can be but cause they don't use the phone as much, my buddie has a iphone 4 and we tested it against the evo and yes he's better but not crazy better like when i was on 50% left he was on 62-65 % my phone died first he was on 10% left. ...

Ok, so SetCPU does actually work and I have successfully downclocked my phone.
If you send 200 texts per day and do little else, as smart phone is not for you. Get a more basic phone that would give you 3-4 days of heavy usage.

That's very strange especially with how little you use it now to try to get more battery life.
Only other thing I can't think of that's not on your list is disabling Google Talk auto sign-in. Not that I think that will make up the difference you are seeing, but it's something else to try. You seem to be doing everything right, maybe try a clean ROM install?

Follow the Battery Recalibration instructions in the cyanogenmod wiki.
Doing this, I was at 73% after 26 hours unplugged. Yes, I was using the phone: 20 Text messages, about 20 minutes of pocket empires, 20 minutes of another game, WiFi enabled for most of those hours, and I even ran the "Relax and Sleep" app for half an hour when I went to bed.
DC 3.2.3 with the Balanced profile.

You don't need to turn off all those features to get better battery life.
If you really have trouble, simply downclock the cpu to something like 460 Mhz and you battery life will double.
Then have someone make an undervolted kernel for you, and your battery life will triple.
When you say managing your apps with ATM? Are you using it to kill your processes? You probably don't need to manually or even schedule task killing with the lowmemkiller in DC.
One thing you didn't mention is what your signal strength in the area is. My 3g reception is utter trash in my office, so I have an extra cable to keep it charged. Overall, my phone drops about 1% while idle and I don't have any task management or cpu throttling apps going.

[Q] I get about 4 hours of usage out of a full charge - how about you?

I have been on here a couple of times complaining about my lousy battery. Well, today I decided to see exactly how far I can take this thing before it conks out on me. Here are my results.
The phone up-time was just over 19 hours, with 14% battery left. (I took my results at 14% because I didn't want the phone turning off on me thus losing all data.) About 49% of the battery was used by the screen, which was on for a total of 3 hours and 20 minutes during this 19 hour period. The rest was split up among other activities, but the most notable/concerning area is 43 seconds of voice took up almost 2% of total battery usage.
I could probably pull out another half-hour or so usage before the phone's battery totally dies, so my final number is 4 hours of usage out of a full charge. This is total usage, i.e. the screen was on for 4 hours.
The phone was at lowest brightness all day except for 10-15 minutes where I had it on full 'cause I was using it outside. I am not using any CPU throttling apps, or such. Background is not fully black. I use one widget, rest are icons. I have Advanced Task Killer which I routinely use to kill tasks, but to be completely honest, unless there is a rouge task ATK does not increase battery life by much. Phone was on 3G primarily, although there were times during the day when I was on EDGE because of weak signal.
All in all, the battery on the Vibrant is pathetic for what it has (Super AMOLED, 45 nm, etc.) but I am glad I can at least last a day. Hopefully Samsung has addressed battery issues in Froyo.
Feel free to post your results on how long you can make your battery last below, so we can all get a better idea. Please do not post "my battery lasts XX days" - give details on your usage, like how I mentioned the battery was at 14% after 19 hours up-time, but actual usage was 3 hours and 20 minutes. Often times it seems like many people brag about how "great" their Vibrant's battery is, but really they rarely use the phone all day hence the "great" battery life.
I completely feel your pain. I had the same issues with my vibrant also. I personally do not believe it is the battery any more because after I applied the ryanza one click lag fix my battery life practically tripled. I kept a very close eye on my usage and settings for the first few weeks. I would get about 12 hours out of a full charge and I would barely use the phone. Frustrated me to no end because I would hear people say that 12 hours with a powerful phone like vibrant is expected. To me it was not acceptable.
I never changed any settings or installed any programs after doing the lag fix but it certainly had a drastic effect. Ill get more statistics when I get home, im at work right now.

Have to agree with this. I tried it out and got quite a boost. I didn't keep as good of details as the OP on my battery use but prior to juice defender a was struggling to make a day. Now a day is not a problem. My typical usage is probably pretty high, lots of internet, lots of tinkering right now plus working on morphs and things, I do keep my screen all the way down except when outside (rarely use my phone outdoors so not much of that), no widgets, no task killer. When I installed juice defender I used the stock settings with the exception of allowing gmail and chat to sync anytime. Juice defender says I'm getting an average of 1.7x the battery life. I think almost all of that comes from when the phone is asleep.
Edit. Checked on details.
Pulled my phone off the charger at 6 am it was at 100%. Used to to do some reading on my way to work (about 30min on the train) worked on some morphs, checked some emails, downloaded some stuff. I'm at 82% and it's 12:20.
Cell standby 39%
Display 33%
phone idle 23%
Various 5%
I use my phone for quite a bit during the day and pull about 13 hours before it starts blinking at me. I personally have zero problems with that amount of battery life from a device of such caliber. My best friend was complaining about her battery in her Vibrant and like I tell everyone else, it's probably some rogue app somewhere. She didn't believe me so we swapped batteries 3 days ago and I still get the same usage times out of her battery as I did mine and her battery life has improved significantly as well.
I don't know what is is that people are doing to get 4-5 hours but 13+ with average use (text, moderate browsing, syncing all day, screen at full brightness all day) is to be expected with this phone. I will post a screenshot of consistency over the course of this weekend to visualize my point.
Also I do not use a task killer of any kind except the Android built in one and I removed hers as well

You mean if you actually use the phone it will drain a lot faster. Your post is a perfect example of what I mean when I said people post very misleading results. For those ~40 hours that your Vibrant has been up, your display has only been on 1, maybe 2 hours (hence only 8% battery usage). Your result is not accurate at all - you aren't using the phone. Anyone can get great battery by letting it sits for hours on in.

Thanks I will look at Juice Defender, but I am not too sure what it will do to help improve my battery which I am not doing already. (I leave GPS off, WiFi off when im not using, have applied lagfix, etc.)
The Droid X is known to get 7-8 hours; and considering the Vibrant has power-friendly hardware, the Vibrant should be getting the same.

When you say 13+ hours, do you mean total up-time or total usage time? Because, as I mentioned in my post, my total up-time was ~19 hours, but usage was actually ~4.

Thanks for clearing that up! Well, it sounds like you are fairing better than me, but without actual data it is hard to say.
Oh, and an FYI: I just called up T-Mobile and had them send me a new battery. FWIW, I am not being charged anything (not even shipping) and I don't have to send back my current battery. I love the retention department .
Can someone post up what they do/what settings they use for juice defender? I installed it but I really don't see how it could save me any more battery seeing that I keep wifi, gps, and all that off, plus my screen is on the lowest setting at all times
Hi all,
What I found out that works best for me is, no task killer, no juice defender, lowest display setting possible, and turning off 3g. 3g ready drains the battery. Task killers are pretty worthless. Do some research on that topic. Android kills programs all by itself. And task killers run in the background, using up battery. My phone is rooted, so I run autostarts to control what starts at boot. My uptime isn't great, but its adequate enough to last from morning to night. I do agee that the battery life when using the phone itself for voice calls is sub part at best. I do believe froyo will help with a lot of these problems. Just my 2¢.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
DON'T use task killer. Vibrant has really good system resource management. With task killers constantly killing core system processes, the phone has to use more power to keep restarting them.
You can read more about it here: http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/
And only turn on active sync for apps that you absolutely need to have them syncing all the time.
This should make your phone last for a whole day with decent usage. If you are still getting very short up time, you probably have a bad battery. Call T-Mo and ask for a replacement.
It all depends on usage. The first days when I got my Vibrant, I was downloading apps all day, or browsing websites, so the battery barely lasts for a day. I usually leave my phone plugged in to my laptop when going to sleep, and set the laptop to auto-shutdown in 4 hour, so the phone gets unplugged at about 4:30 am. With that heavy usage, I needed to recharge at about 7 pm.
However, now that I'm not playing with it that much, the battery life improves greatly. Now I usually do 10-20 text messages and about 30 minutes voice call everyday, also some browsing on the xda forum, and maybe reply several emails. The battery is usually at 40 percent at 10 pm. The only thing I can complain about is that with 40% battery left, I don't want to do a complete recharge, but it won't last the second day either.

I forgot to take pics lol. (busy with my fantasy draft). I will take some today. Rebooting my phone right before I leave for work and some throughout the day.
It still will be hard to say why my battery life exceeds yours but you will at least be able to compare the two.

I get around 5 hours display. Using wifi sporadically, juice defender paid version, lowest brightness. Our screen is too bright. Lol on lowest it looks like the evo's middle.

[Q] Tips to extend battery life? Anyone?

Hey guys,
Just got my Epic yesterday.. coming from the G1 with lots of experience loading and tweaking ROMs and dealing with same/similar battery issues.
After unpacking the Epic I used it and let it drain down to zero before recharging it; after a full recharge, I loaded up the 7 screens with widgets and ran a live wallpaper (fish). I didn't really use the phone much at all and the phone went from 100% battery down to zero in the span of only four hours!!! Geeze, you've got to be kidding me - four hours battery life?? WTF????!!
Back to the drawing board: I rooted it and ran SetCPU with some power saving profiles. Removed the live wallpaper and went to stock wallpaper. Set display power off at 30 seconds. Note that 4G remains off since there's no 4G in my area..
Couple of questions:
1. Is there any way to toggle 2G/3G like there was on my old G1? I know that was a power saver.
2. I didn't stop to read all the documentation yet (typical male, I know) but is there any way to wake this thing up from sleep mode besides pressing the power button? I can see that power button breaking for as much use as it's getting from me constantly having to wake this thing up!
3. My brightness setting is set to auto - since the display is usually the biggest drain on these things, is there a recommended manual brightness setting (percentage) that seems to work well for you and saves on battery power?
I'm waiting for the Seideo Extended Battery (just like many of you) and am wondering if I should keep the Epic since I'm on the Sprint 30-day Easy Return program.
Appreciate hearing from everyone!
Chris R.
I don't have 4G where I am. But, I have a all black wallpaper(uses less power) and unrooted. I easily get about 12-18hr out of my phone wit normal use(text, talk, and surfing the net with skyfire). Only thing that really kills my battery are games(Robo Defense can take over 30min to play one game).
Thanks for the reply - situation NOT improving
Thanks for the reply.. unfortunately, the situation is not improving...
I tried setting a Sleep Profile using SetCPU that would under-clock the CPU (using the stock kernel) once the screen dimmed and the phone went into Sleep Mode. Unfortunately, as mentioned in another thread here, the result was that the phone froze and required a battery-pull to reset.
I'm really starting to lose my enthusiasm for this device; as beautiful a display and as responsive a CPU/GPU, all of that doesn't mean much if you don't have good power management built into the firmware. At 6PM this evening I pulled it off the charger at 67% charged, it's now 8:35 PM, only 2.5 hours later and I'm down to 22%. I'm in a decent coverage area and get 2-4 bars of 3G strength so I don't think it's an issue of the radio being the culprit; in-fact if you check the battery stats it reports that that lovely Display is accountable for 78% of the battery usage! So I guess we're paying a hefty price for these 4-inch AMOLED displays!
I read somewhere else that the most recent update (DI07) has caused the battery performance to decrease; since my unit is brand-new it immediately went and installed DI07 shortly after the first boot-up so I have nothing to compare it to.. can anyone comment on that?
Thanks!
Chris R.
I'm sure custom ROMs will put performance / battery life on the top of the list but until then, I use JuiceDefender beta and have seen pretty good results with it. It shuts off data whenever the screen is off and since my screen is off a good amount (only use my phone if I need to check email, call, and / or text, which is rare when I'm at work). Other than that, yes, use black wallpaper, lower brightness to the min. in the OS and browser, and don't leave apps that constantly use 3G open (things like ebuddy, pandora, etc.). 3G really destroys battery life so minimal use of 3G data would maximize battery life. Maybe the devs can figure out a way to get at least one full day of battery life on this phone. I'm hoping that is the case.
As to your post, yes, DI07 has resulted in poorer battery life, for whatever reason. I was definitely getting a few hours more with the older firmware. I would not lose hope yet. As disappointed as you are (and all of us are, I can assure you of that), the devs are really starting to push out nice ROMs already, and in a few weeks to a month, I bet we will see some solid battery life. Hell, even 2.2 should yield much better results. Patience
Thanks for the tip!

DI07 has hurt my battery life substantially. In fact, my battery drains very close to twice as fast now with the update. I don't understand what they did. My phone certainly doesn't seem any faster, my display is dimmer, and battery life sucks. I'm going to have to go back to DG27 so I can use my phone all day. With DI07 it always dies on me by mid afternoon. With DG27 it was still running by 11pm at night without even a battery low warning.
juice defender ftw
also, use advanced task killer with low security settings to kill all the background processes. Set the autokill to when the screen turns off. This keeps everything pretty well managed and helps with battery as well
JUICE DEFENDER BATTERY!!! Saved my phone from flying out of my car window at 10 in the morning........
here is a link to a thread I started.
Sharing my juice defender settings. I also use ultimate juice.

I can get a day and a half (or slightly longer) out of a single charge.
YMMV.
Hope this helps
Advanced task killer + Juice Defender. You could also get some custom roms and Kernals that would help boost it.
But that's your best hope. Keep off 4g, wifi, bluetooth, etc.

Look here- try stopping the DRM service and see if that helps your battery life with D107

Ah, the evils of DRM can strike in unexpected ways...
I wasn't really having a battery problem but I just turned DRM off, so we'll see if battery life improves anyway.
I had a whole long post here that got wiped with the xda disk array failure, so I'll just sum that up here too:
1) Use wi-fi if possible - it REALLY helps
2) 4G does not seem to use the battery any more than 3G, although hunting for 4G does and 4G coverage is not as extensive as 3G even in 4G areas. So it's still best to leave it off if you're moving around.
3) Dim your screen and use a dark, static background. AMOLED screens don't work like LCD's; they use more power the more pixels are lit and the brighter they are.
4) GPS also kills your battery - leave that off unless you need it too.
I think that's it. I get about 18 hours on DI07 (even before trying the DRM thing; maybe I can get to a full day!).
One thing I'm noticing after checking DRM - I've got Google Maps' LocationService popping up about every 10 seconds, and I can't seem to shut it off permanently. (I went into Lattitude and turned that off, not sure what else to do.) That can't be helping... anyone know how to get rid of that?
I'm using juice defender and a constant email junkie, but lite use on other aspects of the phone. It goes off charger at 5:30 am and I'm about 67% at around 3p. It then goes in the car charger on the way home. This has much better battery life than the Pre or the Hero as with both I had to turn off email to get it to last throughout the day.
I don't expect these phones to last days, but I expect any phone that I get to last the business day. I've always been one to charge overnight.
Wifi drains battery more from what I've read.

I've heard the opposite that wifi (as long as it's connected) uses up less battery than 3g/4g. Any of them will suck the battery dry if they're searching, so make sure you have a connection to one of them.
Hi everyone, new to the forum. Just started checking it out when the Epic was released and this is my first post. Anyways, here's my question. My phone's been off the charger for 7 hours and 17 minutes and it is now down to 15%.
Display 79%
Cell standby 7%
Android System 4%
Phone idle 2%
Swype 2%
I've gone into the display settings and I thought I had set everything up optimally. The brightness is always very low. The screen timeout is 15 seconds and the keyboard matches that. I don't know what else I can do to cripple the phone to get the battery to last longer.
I have had wifi on, 4g off, bluetooth off, gps off. Really all I have done this afternoon while watching NFL games is check my yahoo fantasy score, play 2 games of WordFeud, and check twitter and facebook. I purchased Juice Defender a week ago and it has been running all day.
Any suggestions for how I can reduce the drain from the display? My background is a black and white picture of a friend of mine, which I thought would help.
Don't get me wrong, I love this phone. But the battery life I've seen is just terrible. I'd love to buy the extended battery from Seidio whenever its available, at least that would make it last longer even if the settings aren't tweaked.
Do you have juice defender installed?
Yep. Its installed and running now.

There are only two reasons for your display to be using that much battery:
a) it's too bright, or
b) you're using it a lot.
If you're using the phone a lot, your battery's going to run out pretty quick and there's no way around that. If you're using it a "normal" amount, which to me means maybe an hour *total* per day of having the display on, then the other culprit is going to be your brightness. (Some would argue that's less than a normal amount, but think about it... you get a new phone, you're going to play with it for a week or two until you've seen all the cool stuff. But at some point you're going to start putting it away most of the time and just using it when someone calls you, you get a message/email or maybe to play a game or two while waiting for the train.)
Set your brightness *all* the way down, just as a test for a couple days. Make sure all the "power saving" features of the display are turned *off* (auto brightness, and whatever that "picture detection" feature's called, I can't remember). You just want the display as dim as possible all the time, just to see what happens. See what the battery usage says after a day or two of this.
My bet is that you'll see a drop, and then as you get into a more normal usage pattern it'll drop further still. You can raise the brightness a couple ticks then as you learn how to stretch your battery out.
Personally, my display is rarely over 15% or so of my usage. Today it's 29%, but it's a Sunday and I don't have anything better to do but play around on my phone.
btw, it's still the first day I've tried this but that DRM thing might be working. It's almost 9PM and I'm still on like 80% battery, and like I said I have been using the phone off and on throughout the day.
That has helped tremendously. I installed it pretty much when I got the phone and I'm able to last the whole work day with 67% left. (10 hour day)

Noticeable increase in battery life if I switch ROMs?

Right now I'm using RoyalGinger 3.0 on my HTC Panache.
I know that it's based on CM7, but if I switch to the actual CM7 Nightly or Faux's ROM which I'm also considering, will I get noticeable improvements in battery if I maintain the exact same usage patterns?
Hmm. That's difficult to answer. RG has really good battery life. Faux's ROMs focus more on raw speed than battery life, but still give decent battery life. CM7 doesn't have as good of battery life as RG, but usually lasts all day with all but heavy usage. At least, that's what I've found. Your mileage may vary. Your choice of kernel is important, so keep that in mind.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
With moderate usage, I average roughly 11-13 hours using Royal Ginger and the kernel it comes with. Couldn't really find any benchmarks so not sure whether this is typical or not
This is with brightness set at the absolute lowest (Display On roughly 3 hours), Wifi never on, GPS never on.
OC'd at 1.1/245 smartass. Trying out On Demand to see if there is any difference
Well I know its not RG or CM7 but I run Virtuous Unity 2.35 and I am averaging 16-20 hours of battery with a average of 2.5-4.5 hours of display. It all depends on what you do with the phone.
There are many ways to help improve battery life. For instance Battery Calibration on the market. Follow those instructions and you wont go wrong. Another being Juice Defender (paid or free). A friend of mine is using an AOSP rom for his Evo and is averaging 30+ hours with Juice Defender.
Had no idea about that Battery Calibration app. When I flashed RG (and now MIUI), all I did was let the battery run down to 2% through regular usage and do a full charge until 100%
Flashed MIUI the other day, which I've heard nothing but good things about, including battery life, and am following the instructions of Battery Calibration now.
Not the biggest fan of Juice Defender. Had used the free version for a few days, and I found that sometimes it wouldn't re-initiate my data after the screen turned back on (which seems to be one of the more prominent features to save battery)

I agree with the Juiced Defender, that's the reason I don't use it.
For instance, when we are car pooling to school he has problems keeping pandora playing because Juiced kept turning data off. So he disables it when we are driving.
You don't have to use Juice Defender, of course, but the reason it re-initiates data when you turn the screen back on is that it turns the data off when the screen turns off. Turning the data off is what saves battery.

[TIPS] Juice Defender, Why its good and bad

Reading through threads I see lots of people saying JD and similar apps are good and lots saying they are bad. This is quite confusing for someone who just wants to get good battery life. In my experience I have gone from finding it good to finding it bad. I will try and explain why this occurs so that people are able to decide if it will be worthwhile for them.
First install Battery Monitor Widget and find out what sort of drain your battery is experiencing every hour.
With a stock rooted G2 with data connection on continually (no wifi) I was getting around 80-150 mA which explains why it would not last longer that about 16 hours. Most of this drain seems to occur from data connections. After installing JD or something similar the drain can be reduced to around 50 mA. Which is great, suddenly you get the claimed 1.5 to 2x battery life. JD seems great.
But after you install a good ROM and custom kernal, remove or freeze all the apps that keep using your data connection unnecessarily and install Better Battery stats you observe that JD stops the phone going into a proper deep sleep. If you dump it the drain on the phone drops to very low numbers usually under 20mA sometimes 5mA or even 2mA. This means you use around 1-3% of the battery life of the phone overnight with no changes. Now your phone can last days between charges. Note this is with Data or Wifi connections turned on and Sync active always.
Summary:
On a badly set up phone JD improves battery life (for the lazy)
On a well set up phone JD worsens battery life (takes some time)
Note: I got the best results using Speedmods kernal but I have no reason to think that other kernals could not get similarly low battery drains.
Thanks for sharing your observations. I have juice defender and have had similar findings. The wake locks jd causes play into the aos bug of the phone which is why it can make things worse on a well set up phone (the extra drain from the wake locks outweighs the savings from turning the data connection off when it's not in use). If not for the aos bug it would probably be good in all cases. I had noticed this in my testing and am glad to see I'm not the only one.

Thanks for sharing your observations.
If I had seen your post much earlier than I wouldn't have to buy JD. Anyway, I have gone through the hard way, and learnt how to keep my phone organized and minimized rouge apps issue. JD is pretty much useless now.
IMHO, I think Battery monitor widget pro seems to be a much better buy
Thanx for this helpful info!
BTW, kernel not kernal
I do not have a lot of widgets and sync as little as possible. Mail sync is only on demand (when I have time to read it), and Weather is every 6 hour (disabled in night time).
So my battery live is good ½% standby and with normal use it can easily last a full day (no gaming, just Internet, Talk, SMS).
I decided to try JD in order to save even more juice, but JD ended up using more battery than it saved me!
So I can confirm that JD is good for the "lazy user" and bad if your aware of your sync. and how your apps behave.
What do u mean by dumping? You said if you dump it and the drain goea away? Im a bit confused

By 'dump' I just meant uninstall JD. If you uninstall JD your phone will be able to deep sleep properly provided it is set up well and you actually save more battery.

Sure you can do that, but it's not necessary. I leave wifi and 3g on and still have drain of 5mA all night. I wake up and have lost almost no battery. The same applies for when the phone is idle during the day.
