Help me love Android more on my HD2 - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I want to, I really really want to but everytime I boot into it I keep thinking "meh".
It just looks clunky when I compare the Android Homescreen (build as per sig) to my WinMO homescreen - with stock ROM, CHT2 and the Glass appearance.
So as not to repost what I said elsewhere here are my beefs and likes:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10328739&postcount=30
Main issues for me:
-poor battery life
-homescreen dominated by huge clock and widgets take up too much room each (large fonts) so the Agenda widget can only display 1 entry whereas on Winmo I can display at least 2 - even with a row of quicklinks and the date/alarm
-no Android Sense equivalent of the Slider?

You seems to really dislike android... I am sure that is because you don't know this os much.
there are many ways to recreate this screen, start to look at pure calendar widget and launcher pro. My battery last more than 6h screen on, more than one hundred in standby. Nand builds are very battery friendly.

I guess it's just a matter of taste, but I like Android so much better the WinMo. I loved CHT 1.8.5 back on WinMo, but when I started to use Android (which soon replaced WinMo), CHT felt so 'limited' if you find out what else you can do on Android. I've learned many things from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743301
Maybe a good idea to take a look there?
Sincerely,
Mac

where did I say I dislike it?
If anything I am saying I would like to like it more, is all.
As I did all the settings etc for my wife's Desire I have played around with it a fair bit over the past 6 months on her phone.
I am just saying apart from those few things above (esp Apps and multi-calendar) for me it does not seem to add much over WinMo and have listed a few negs vs WinMo in my experience.
It isn't a visceral preference - I am trying to keep an open a mind as I can!
I don't want to use a Nand build as there are a few things I need to drop into WinMo for (work related) and at this stage I don't see it as a superior choice yet anyway

Many thanks Mac
I shall spend more time on that page - I have had a cursory look before and certainly some look great.

What kinds of things are you referring to that you can do in Android over WinMo please?
oh and Mac I hit the thanks button for you simply for your great Sig - I heartily agree!

I would get launcher pro if i was you. You can edit the size of the widgets and change how many rows and columns. I also changed the font size so is smaller and it fits more stuff on each screen. I would also say launcher pro has the closest thing to a slider like winmo. It let's you have three docks which you van slide through which gives you up to 15 different items in the dock.

OneHand Applauncher

Hey guys,
over the last few days I've gotten so annoyed that I can't use my phone (Vario II) with only one hand so I decided to do something about it. Therefore I started to go nuts in Photoshop and Visual Studio and have so far managed to get this far:

}
The buttons work and the time is correct but I haven't done the appointments bit yet (any hints on how to do this in VB.net?). If anyone is interested I might release this when I get everything to work, for example the paths to the apps are currently hardcoded, I want OneHand to load them from a xml-file so they can easily be changed later on.
The icons are Crystal Clear btw, included in most Linux distros and released under the LGPL license so they are free to distribute.
Any ideas/suggestions?
EDIT: Oh, and the idea is to add submenus with large icons etc to some buttons such as messaging, settings, web, games, music. Eg so you tap Messaging, then you can chose to write a new text/mms/email and check the inbox of each. Sort of like Spb Mobile Shell but hopefully a bit more configurable..
It is very nice. Something to different to look at that is not aye-Fone-ish.
Although I like the appointment part very much, probably you might not want to go on the appointment section first, as it seems for most people it is not a priority (for me, I use Pocket Breeze, for Task+App up to 7 days ahead). From what it seems, others are looking for things like .. battery, signal strength, number of missed call/sms/voice-mail. You may want to check the ayeFone launcher for users comments as well as methods they used to get into some of the inforamtion.
For other ideas, try looking at the 'Prada' phone interface. Do a search at YouTube to see how the Prada phone interface behave.
For much interesting interface, try YouTubing for 'Neonode' as well.
The Prada phone interface looks very inteesting. Might try to emulate some of those functions. Currently I find the Windows Mobile interface to be pretty much unusable for a phone. Everything is way too small and cluttered. Ill fire up Photoshop and see what I can come up with
BTW, almost forgot about this. Take a look at this program "rlToday". Go to its official website, look at all the possible 'skin' people are using. From what it seems, it can produce the interface you've shown above (big buttons to launch apps) and clock (without the appointment part) BUT, it also ables to show how many missed call, SMS, etc.
Thought you might want to know this to avoid making duplicated efforts. Happy coding.

iDEAS for touch style application

Over in the Elf forum we love the htc cube. this is an application that has sides and a face. one side has general apps, one has multimedia apps, and one contacts and phone.
it is very useful but cannot be fully modified.
We all love the cube and want to reconfigure it but cannot quite get it right...transformation issues, and some icons that cannot change, etc.
I wonder if someone could do a similar app that was more configurable? if the animation was too hard what about movement like Tene's Contact Manager or a dissolve transformation ???
Sadly I am no longer a coder but would be happy to donate for such an app...
just thinking out load,
Sam.

This is a small test of a work-in-progress.:
http://rapidshare.com/files/43755638/FlashBox.zip.html
the "oficial" site is actually a portuguese forum:
http://www.pocketpt.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=16424
i am really contemplating on the same ideas as well.. but having ideas without any knowledge in programming really sucks for me..
i stumbled this very nice transition animation thingies which are said written in dotNET framework 2..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOMrPz56OVo
link to the developer can be found here
the project is made only for smartphones but i think the transitions switches and its idea can be used in a revolutionary PPC launcher of some sort..
i quite don't like having a launcher that eats the whole screen (just like the touchflo cube), hiding the top and bottom bars, giving the user an illusion of having a "new" and "exciting" interface - but then after you select something, you'll be pulled back to the same windows mobile interface..
maybe it's better to just stick to what Windows mobile looks like, but yet, giving it something flashy and worth seeing instead.. just like cool transitions..
maybe the swipe gesture can be used to flip the contents of the screen instead (including the top and bottom bars) rather than rotating a full screen cube.. i think it'll definitely load and feel faster than summoning a full screen application and redrawing the default interface and the launched program afterwards..
just a thought though..
That is pretty cool...hopefully it can be applied to touch screens as well.
Some excellent additional thoughts and ideas. For me a fullscreen app works best as it allows the touch interface to look much better than wm6 and gives me more 'elbow' room when using my fingers to control the application.
The flash solution looks good but I would prefer to minimise memory demands by loading as little additional software as possible.
Mind you I am no longer a coder and if it works and avoids devouring all my memory I will be VERY happy indeed.
All the best,
Sam.
Orb Interface Concept
Hello
I thought of a new interface idea that would be finger friendly and everything. Read about it on my XDA post here:
I think it would be a great interface, but I need some programers to make it happen. Get the word out about this project, and maybe something will happen.
Thanks,
Andrew

Theme has messed up my Touch HD?

So i've had the touch hd for a few months now im starting to venture out into the tricks mods and apps that are available. I installed manilla, Ifonz, and a theme or mod or something for manilla. Found that none of them were for me, so i un-installed them. But now, my little thing at the top right has been resized, and when i go to use touchFLO2d its like, the wrong size and i cannot figure out how to get it to the right size.
See the attatched picture.

That is was my htc looks like, and the red circle shows the thing that has gone small too.
Also, does anyone think the htc touch works in a complicated way to acheive nothing?. I dont want to compare it to an iphone, but with an iphone, you have your pages of apps n stuff, and you open on?. You close one?. with the HTC you seem to have to go such a long way to acheive the same. and also the htc seems rather slow?
So my questions:
- See the picture and can anyone tell me how to make it fullsize.
- Speed up the HTC, or make it smoother?.
-Install something that (Not immitates iphone), but works, like one, and doesnt just overlay windows mobile 6. Which from what i see is what everything does?.
you cant make the phone better by disguising it as something and pretending it makes it run better?. If anything, its slower as its another app open?. basicly, and app to open apps. Correct me?
Thankyou
~Stephen
So you buy a winmo phone but don't want winmo?
There have been people running Android on their Touch HD so I guess thats what you're looking for but I don't know anything on the subject, I just know it CAN be done.
It works in a overly complicated way?
Hmmmmm.....
Well. Only if you class an operating system as overly complicated.. Its the same as changing your theme in windows. Infact. Its exactly the same. If you want an iphone, and are desperate to have your phone look like an iphone, and think the iphone user interface is all that, then buy an iphone?
This runs windows mobile. It can be Skinned with another UI to make it look and feel different. The same as Windows can be. The same as linux can be. Never used macs so dont know.
Anyway. Can't solve your problem. BUT. Nope. Not overly complicated...
The same UI can be applied to this. All apple is doing is making it so that the UI is all you see. That way it limits what you can do, and makes it so its very uncustomisable.
Honestly, i think the apple iphone is amazing. I get my HTC touch HD delivered tommorow. If i dont like it within the first 6 hours it's goin on ebay and i'm buying an iphone.
Will just have to see what happens though!
Argh, i didnt want this thread to turn out like this. I wasn't comparing the HD to the iphone in that was, and its not the iphone i want. Its the HD, i just wanted to know if anyone thought changing themes and stuff was abit over complicated. Anyway can anybody help me reguarding the resize of touchflo2d?
~Stephen
Go to Settings->Today.
Goto Items Tab. Untick all except Touch Flo 3D. Click OK.
See if it helps.
Some non wvga plugin must be messing around

[Q] MIUI icon background

Launchers of like Touchwiz, iPhone, MIUI and DELL android tablet use those squared backgrounds for the icons on their home screen.
I've searched XDA for a themer/dev who has done this but no luck.
People seem to rather remove the iPhone's icon style but I think it looks nice.
Now I want to achieve this effect on a Sense or non-Sense based ROM without photo shopping every icon.
So is there a way to mod a Standalone Launcher like LauncherPro or ADW to have this icon style?
I'd love to help if any dev wants to give this a shot.
Thanks.
I know there are roms with those iphone-style backgrounds... here is one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=688687
*note this rom is only compatible with the eris* *it has been ported to other htc phones though*
Also the mytouch slide has bubbles behind each icon,
Also if you install touchwiz3.0 launcher (ripped from a galaxy s phone) it puts a random coloured sqaure behind each icon, im sure you can edit those square to have what you want
Edit: Those bubbles are what is featured above
Thanks for the replies, the thing is I want this effect on the HTC Desire which I have installed a Sense ROM (Froyo) on.
I would rather not which to another ROM just to have squared backgrounds.
This is why a Launcher would be the perfect solution.
I think the touchwiz3.0 launcher wouldn't work on my ROM but I'll try!
EDIT: I tried the touchwiz and it works! But the "bubbles" only show in the app drawer.
Here's a *.png of a square I made.

download bettercut from the market, then download an iphone icon set from market and apply icons to whatever you want through bettercut.

That would leave me making icons for apps who don't have an iPhone icon.
I'm not looking for that kind of solution.
I want it to have a square behind every icon automatically so to speak.
The DELL tablet ROM and the MIUI ROM does exactly what I want but.
I looked to port it over but that wouldn't work as the whole thing is different.
I've been searching for the same thing, with no luck. The Touchwiz launcher only puts the icon backgrounds on the dock, like you said, and I can't find the modified launcher that the MyTouch 4G uses to put on my EVO.
I'm currently running MIUI, which is awesome, except my battery life is pretty terrible compared with the stock (or modified stock) Sense ROM.
I guess I'll keep searching, and if anyone has any more suggestions, please post them here.
ADWLauncher EX can do this. It's not free though. I am sure it is possible to code it into any Launcher, but how you do that is beyond my capabilities.

Cool. Thanks!
Awesome! Just bought it, now I'm downloading the latest EViO ROM and dumping MIUI- the random restarts (although seldom), the wifi drops, and the terrible battery life unfortunately outweigh the really nice UI.

Android / Samsunsg regress

Hi there,
So I have been using N7000 quite a while now - 2 years or so. And I discovered one, very annoying thing about new versions of android - each one seems to be worse in terms of usability and desktop space usage then the previous one...
Lets start with GB roms - there was 5x5 launcher in home screen and 6x5 in app menu + very useful bottom app dock that visible from desktop (home screen) and app screen. Also - each screen had a number that was shown in the bottom, so you knew where you were.
See picture: gb.jpg taken from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424401 here
Next version - ICS has cut some rows of icons in the app menu and completely deleted bottom app dock. And where the hell is screen number gone? Why??
The good thing about ICS was decent performance and quite good battery life. - Actually, the best one so far on n7000
See picture ics.jpg taken from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923817
JellyBean - same story less apps rows, everything seems to have more room for itself but it causes more screens and more swyping gestures. 4x4 in home screen is a joke. Having so big screen and using so little of it is pointless. I do not know what were they thinking designing the layout! And how did they manage to release so bugged software causing all kernel wakelocks destroying our batteries?
And finally - KitKat which follows the same direction - less icons in the screen, more touches to get you where you want.
Now regarding AOKP that everybody seems to love here - there is no support of very 'basic' apps that Samsung offers in stock TW roms:
- fm radio
- video calls via 3g
- s note
I can understand that s-note is the samsung specific app, but video calls and fm radio not being supported in 2014 AOKP KitKat roms is regress...
I recon that the next version of Android will have 1 icon and 1 icon for 1 screen - containing 12 screens.
We are putting ourselves in the custody of trying simplify things which are simple enough. Many other examples would be some of the google apps - Talk regressed to Hangouts, Maps regressed to new maps, and simple search app regressed to google now that everybody hates. And did I mention it takes 1 home screen when you swipe left on several devices?
I do not want be involved in the discussion of every single mistake google / samsung / communicy have made. I just wanted to point that the way, we are being directed is clearly a wrong way ahead!
Roll on

Wow what an analysis. Yes ur right about everything u have said. Each new version of android shows so low mininum hardware requirement, which is not true because once the rom is released its much bigger in size than the previous one. I would like android to get updates like linux. Each edition getting a parallel update. Newer devices gets the newer edition and older devices should get the update of the edition they are already on.
The best performance my note showed was
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
To an already brilliant post the only thing missing was this statement based on a razor-sharp mind and an unmatched intellectual spirit.
brilliant post. brilliant analysis. plus there are now more non responsive google. same goes for force closing of apps
