On the iphone everybody can install 3rd party apps and they can install which bashband version they want. the G1 that should be open source can change the rc30 version to all the people that get the update OTA. i dont understand that.
I think that the G1 is inherently MORE open out of the box than an iPhone. While it is possible to jailbreak an iphone and install 3rd party apps (Not taking into account the app store). It isn't something you'd be able to do without the jailbreak plus you have to repeat the process after any update.
A factory G1 is capable of installing 3rd party apps without any modification, also those apps have greater access to the internal workings of the phone, (again I'm talking about an out of the box iPhone versus an out of the box G1).
The whole root situation is an interesting one, I believe that is a bit naughty to not allow root access without tinkering, but I also understand that the majority of end users will not be that bothered by it.
As for openness, I would say that the iPhone and G1 are on an equal footing once modified but the G1 has the clear lead over the iPhone unmodified.
i dont agree with you. with my iphone out of teh box without jailbreak i can download apps over the app store exctly like the G1 from the google market.
Okay then, try downloading an app from a website and install it without using the appstore. I can do that via my G1. Also try developing an app and install it on your friends iPhone without having to submit it to anyone for pre-approval.
all i need is hebrew support in the iphone i have it for 2 diffrent company in the G1 i dont have it couse i have RC30 OTA. and not the moddified.
It isn't very clear what you're talking about here my friend, are you saying you already have hebrew support on your iPhone or that you want it? Or are you talking about the G1 having different language support?
If you're talking about the G1 then there is currently a few different projects working on different language versions of android. I believe that google are working on one and that there is a project on this very board attempting to do the same.
in the iphone there is a hebrew support on software. in the G1 i cant do nothing to read only hebrew (if it read and write hebrew its will be my dream).
If what you want is hebrew support, it's coming. Actually it's here right now, but you need root to do it.
Anyways you can't compare the two in that respect, there are over 7 million iPhones out there (it's the second most popular phone) so of course there's hebrew support. And if I recall, there wasn't for a while.
On a last note, you can't out-of-the-box use your Iphone in israel, it had to be reverse-engineered. You can of course buy an unlocked G1 for $300 that will work with an Orange SIM.
The iPhone is NOT open, it's not OPEN SOURCE, and it is way more locked down. If the G1 had had even half the popularity the iPhone had then there would be out-of-the-box hebrew support.
if you have root, you may be able to get hebrew via root on your G1:
http://www.talkandroid.com/android-forums/android-chat/660-hebrew-fonts-g1.html
Hag Sameach, by the way.
thanks for all but the problem is that i dont have root. i have rc30.
Yes I understand... my wife and I both need root, not just for hebrew support but for all the cool functions that it allows.
Anyways fear not, things will change soon. There's a huge OTA update coming out early next year, hopefully they will address some of these issues as well.
Remember, tel aviv is one of the major android development locations; so I can almost guarantee hebrew fonts sometime next year. At least, that's what I've heard from everyone I've spoken to about it.

I agree with you, at the moment. The gphone is currently as usable as the iphone at the time when it was out for 3 month. Not so much apps, mods,... you know.
I hope there will come a bypass or anything like that soon.
In my opinion signed updates violates against the opensource license.
PS: i ordered both gphone and iphone

I think this forum needs a sticky explaining what open source means and implies because not a single day goes by that I don't see someone erroneously invoking the "but it's open source!" argument.

Quite true. Here are some good resources:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source
Also a reminder that while Android is open, the G1 is not Android.

I wish this forum could give some kind of star-ranking to helpful and knowledgeable members. It's rare to find people here who understand what free-and-open-source means.
The way T-Mobile has chosen to cripple the G1 for users who weren't quick enough to keep root is ethically reprehensible, but not legally wrong or in violation of any licensing.
ahhhh
Already beaten to death here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=461893

If anyone can prove that this discussion isn't leaning more and more to a useless discussion getting out of hand and is actually about developing or fixing issues on the G1 and it should not belong to be in the general thread.
Please don't hesitate to inform me.
In the mean time this thread is is closed and moved.
People might not like me for repeating this But Development threads are for development, and actually most of XDA is for Development.
If the forum would be filled with "I Think G1 is not delivering what it promised" there would probably not be Android running on other HTC phones besides the G1.
There are threads for Chit Chat and even then it would be nice if the discussion is respectful.
I saw (I can't remember where and even tried googling for a while and couldn't find it again) a website that lists packages for phone manufacturers. One was like, stock (like what's on the g1 w/"with google" branding) another one was custom ui etc (I am assuming the package used for motoblur and rosie). < or something that that effect.
Now my point: I am not sure the cost of these licenses, but I was thinking maybe one entity (xda for example). Could purchase a license (with donation money) and allow devs like cyanogen, maxisma, drizzy, jac etc operate under that license.
Not this is just an idea, I don't know too much about licenses and how they work etc. its just an idea to discuss.

It's not a stop gap, this would actually be effective, as it would legally allow them to include those apps in the ROMs.
But, how much those licenses cost is a whole nother world.
Yeah, I posted this very suggestion in one of the first threads created about this topic. I even have some ideas about funding and possible non-profit status for the organization that acquires the license for distribution... but it was lost in the *****ing and moaning.
Yes I believe that would be a viable option as far as licensing goes there are a set terms to them that after has been agreed to like a contract can't change we would be fine. But as the case with Blizzard entertainment they can change and most likely will all the time. I aggree best option would to be make a full open source option that would allow us to operate without the google apps but that is very tricky as well, for service especially like YouTube that has terms of use and unless sactioned by them they don't want you using that service. It was for that reason why youtube downloader was pulled from the market and also violated ToS for downloading. No other youtube app has really poped up. Another solution like has pointed out in dev forum is to back them up from a google image already on the device. They specially said we can't distribute them. Currently I am trying to find the terms for it if any one can find for me that would be great. Another idea that I have was to make an application that would allow user to install what ever custom rom without google apps then find the approriate image from google for the device rom is installed on. Download that image ROM file and extract out google apps and install on the device. Since was ment for that and I or xda won't be distrubting the apps that might fall as acceptible in their terms. If anyone can find the terms I would greatly appreciate it.

yea but adobe plans to release flash 10 for android as early as october
I read that Cyanogen or someone is already working on a workaround..kinda. A backup program which will backup your currently legal device apps, and upon install of his bare-bones rom, restore the original device apps.
Things will be close to the same. Just a bump in the road. They should know, people will always find a way. Legal or not.
Under the market is there supposed to be a
Featured Apps for Tablets, or Tablets apps section?
for whatever reason I do NOT see one, I am using an imported wifi model (from USA) here in Canada, is that why? any hack I can do
thanks
I guess what im asking for, is, is there some kind of MARKET ENABLER for the Xoom
I have an imported Xoom as well, I'm in UAE. But I was able to install that app you refer to, it's called Tegra Zone.
I was however unable to install many other free apps that should work, even Angry Birds and a few others. It says something like "It's not allowed on my operator" or something, though it's Wifi Xoom.
I'm wondering if Market Enabler, or Market Access would work on a rooted Wifi Xoom? It should break this kind of location barriers.
i can install everything, tegrazone shows tegra apps only
but theree supposed to be (so i hear) a section in the ANDROID MARKET called 'Features apps for tablet'
which i dont see
ur prob is odd..if ur wifi only u shud have no problems, try a new google account, maybe ur existing one is tied to a phone that is using an operator in UAE
I also don't see Featured apps for tablet in Market. I have a wifi only Xoom bought from US, i'm in EU.
If I search for honeycomb apps in Market, it finds them and I can install them just fine.
Maybe the Market just doesn't show Featured apps for tablet in other countries yet? As far as I know, there are no honeycomb tablets on sale in EU yet, so maybe they will update the Market when Xoom launces in EU?
Anyway we will see when european Xoom is released, if it will show the Featured apps for tablet. And if it does, then we probably can use the european rom at least on wifi only Xoom.

Sorry misunderstood you. I can only see the sliding banner and featured free apps (6 of them), some of which I can't even install!
PS. I was just able to install Angry Birds using a VPN connection in UK. Before, it used to say Item not found when it tries to install.
So try a VPN connection in the US, it should show Featured apps(?)
so can someone who owns a xoom IN THE USA
actually post here and be like 'yes there is actually a features tablet apps' section in the android market
Yes there is actually a featured tablet apps section in the Google Market - at least for U.S. customers...
Yep im in us snd there is a feautered tablet apps section. But it has only 57 apps listed. Searching for honeycomb is a much better result.
have you tried via the browser market?
I can verify that when I was in the states I had the featured apps for tablets section. As soon as I flew out it disappeared. Very short sighted and stupid. If nothing else there should also be an option to filter tablet apps in the online market.
The screwy incompetence of big businesses with multiple minds working together is a constant source of wonder to me.

We need a feed that updates everytime a new tablet app appears in the market
its sad cause the wifi xoom is actually out in canada now..
unless they can see this too
but im just screwed cause I got a usa xoom working in canada
anyone who bought the xoom from canada can let me know if they see it?
I also can't get Google books etc.. usually market enabler by Rac would work but we have no GSM
Perhaps an modified vending.apk?
I bought my xoom wifi in Canada. I installed tegrazone and I can see the featured apps no problem. I don't see google books or google translate...
i purchased a wifi version and I am in Canada and though there is a featured apps section on the market, its not tablet only apps. It kind of useless.
Yea got mine in Canada Wifi only, and I see no tablet section. Just regular old market.
let's start posting names of the best tablet apps in here...
Monster madness
Btw all I see in the tegra zone is like 4 paid games, one free one and a bunch of coming soon... not a single app. No options either...

We are talking about "Featured apps for tablets" in Android Market. It seems it doesn't matter where you bought the Xoom, it shows the "Featured apps for tablets" only for people in US.

Just a questionaire, i'm trying to do some market research as I begin my personal app development project after I have finished my studies, thanks.
OK so what are the questions?
Yeah.. I pay for my apps.
Hi,
I would've loved a multiple-choice questionnaire because price is not the deciding factor. I paid 4,99 € for Juice Defender Ultimate without blinking, but I wouldn't pay a dime for an app that is half-way done, ugly and doesn't do what I need to.
Do ask if you want to know more about my buyer profile.
Cheers!
I pay for apps when the f4ck1ng Playstore lets me. Since I'm a citizen of an exotic European country, the Market has allowed me to buy just 1 app so far (Root Uninstaller). The other one (Titanium) I could buy off the dev directly. Other than that - "This app is not compatible with your N7000", meaning fcuk off.
As a result of that, I'm forced to use just free apps - not that I need many anyway - but it's humiliating and degrading.

A free (limited functionality or ad supported) version to ensure it works properly on my devices with an in app purchase to unlock the full version. That last part is what I find missing in a lot of games and I hate starting over because I decided to buy the full/ad-less version
there should be an option saying " when the play store is available in your country !!"
it's sickening how one would like to buy stuff only to find that he's being blocked due to geo-based restrictions ,even when using market unlocker I still can't buy paid apps.
actually I once went through the trouble of creating a fake US address just to buy "Set cpu" from Amazon app store ,cause that's the only app store I can fool ,and even that is getting harder to do now a days.
it's just frustrating you know.......not to mention makes devs lose potential sales.
I've bought more apps in my 2.5 months on android, than my previous 3 years in iOS. Interestingly, there are more apps in the android world that I'm willing to pay for.
Ive recently just came over to the android community previously being an iphone user. Any apps i bought through the appstore i have repurchased through the marketplace. I find aslong as there is value for money then i will pay for it

Just wondering if there were any other developers willing to work on the A7 or (more preferably) the A7+. Dexter seems to have quit or lost interest his development permanently on either devices (I think he doesn't have a physical device to work with anymore, but I don't remember where I heard this). The last time he logged on to Tablet Roms was on "04-27-2012", and the last time he logged on to XDA was, well, today actually but he doesn't seem to have any interest in the eLocity forum section. He DID leave us with quite a lot of quality ROMs to work with, especially since the kernel was released for the + in March.
If there aren't any developers willing to work with the A7/A7+ because they don't have a physical device, I would willingly offer remote testing on my A7+ (AKA they give me the compiled ROM(s) or whatever and I try it out and give feedback). It just seems like such a shame to leave both devices with nothing better than a buggy (but still awesome) Honeycomb or a working stock 2.2. ICS seems like it would be doable, again especially since the kernel was released.
I will try to contact the user "chinabull" in the referred link as he seemed like he knew what he was doing when he said "It seems to have all the driver source code we need."
And I have also posted this over at TR.
EDIT- Turns out I can't send PM's to chinabull here, forgot about that. I'll find some other means of communication.
EDIT2- I'm crazy- the message got through; chinabull messaged back! And... he said that he already returned his A7+. So we've got no leads there.
If anyone knows some devs who haven't even heard of the A7/A7+ but might be willing to pick up where Dexter left off, please contact them or let me know so that I can contact them.

I would be willing to pony up CDN $20 towards the purchase of one for a talented (and dedicated) dev to work with. Here in Canada they are available as refurbs for about $90 from places like factorydirect dot c a ..
Anyone else want to donate some dinero ?
Cheers
Sorry for the late(ish) reply, I was out of town.
I don't have any money to donate, sadly, as I just spent it on the A7+...
But, like I said in the OP, if you are willing to work from afar we could do that.
It's a shame it's dead. Prices are around $90 in the US too. With all the china pads out there getting 2nd tier dual core processors with 600 res screens for very little more, it's easy to see why this would go by the wayside. One plus would be built in bluetooth which no china pad has at anything close to this pricepoint, and it probably has a better battery than many of them as well.
We've got someone over at Tablet Roms who will be working on the A7+! He is just waiting on the tablet to arrive.

I'd donate if you're talking about developing for the (older) A7. I still use mine and it would be nice to see a fresh rom for it.
I'd be in if I didn't just pick up the ZTE Optik from Sprint. Can't beat free and can't beat running JB via CM10. That 800 res is quite nice.
I'd greatly appreciate someone picking up work on the A7+. I still haven't flashed the newer firmware with the blank screen from sleep fix because I was holding out hope for a new custom rom. I'd have to root and install the outdated gapps again... And I'm sure we don't have unreasonably high expectations. I'd just like a rom without those awful elocity apps, doesn't black screen when I wake it, with google play, and with functioning hardware, anything more is welcome but uneccessary.

Maybe, I don't know. You'd have to ask him yourself - http://www.tabletroms.com/forums/members/jam4.html
"I am about 2 weeks out from releasing a working Honeycomb build for the A7+. Let me know how many of you are interested, either by pm or an email to [email protected]"
Everyone go PM or Email him!
So...2 weeks out? How'd that go?
Btw, the A7+ is at 1saleaday again for $70 this time. I'm willing to buy one and ship it to a developer if that's a hurdle since I'm pretty sure there are enough people out there that would want a solid Honeycomb or even Gingerbread firmware. I don't have the time/obsession to figure out the coding myself.
