I have been creating a few VW style wallpapers for a while in 480 x 800 as jpeg's.
When I assign it as the today/lock screen it is not centralised. As when I press start the image moves up. If you understand? I'll try and get some screenshots.
I have an Image of a BBS alloy before and I'm sure that this didn't do the same. I was pretty sure the resolution was 480 x 800. Is this correct?
Hoping somebody that creates themes/wallpapers could help me out.
I'm using photoshop CS3.
Thanks,
Al.

I think the image you see when you go into the start menu, is the 'lock screen' wallpaper, so i think it displays this between the top and bottom bars... so if you're using CHT or another app to make your wallpapers fullscreen (i.e. cover the top and bottom bars) it'll look weird.
I had the same issue..... i think
yup 480*800 is correct...
Yeah, I was pretty sure on the resolution. But yes. It does cut out the top and bottom where the black bars are. Is there a way to stop it doing this?
What is CHT? I'm not using that to make them fullscreen I don't think.
Its just when I make the wallpapers because I crop most of the image and line it up with the bottom of the picture for a good "look" It most likley cuts it off on the today screen. Which cuts some of the detail out sometimes. So I have to make sure that it is far enough up the screen. I suppose I could get the resolution between the two bars. Although when you get the lock screen there would be two gaps.
Is there a way to have a different lock screen?
A reg key pointing to the image?
Thanks,
Al.
when i used to be a WM user, this is what i figured out about WM6.5(.x) behavior.
the HD2 has a 480x800 screen. WM6.5 can be set to have a wallpaper (***cough***iPhoneSux***cough). WM6.5 can also be set to have transparent "top" and "bottom" bars.
now, things start to get a little confusing.
1. ideally, we would like to see the ENTIRE wallpaper on the lockscreen and homescreen, with the status/notification icons overlaid.
2. similarly, we would like to see the ENTIRE wallpaper behind the start menu. if transparent "top" and "bottom" bars are used, we would like them to be transparent when the rest of the wallpaper is visible as just described in the scenarios.
3. however, we would like the transparency to go away when an application is running in the foreground (being able to see thin strips of the wallpaper when an application covers the rest of the screen looks silly i guess).
it turns out that WM6.5 ALMOST covers all those requirements. it sort of fails on the homescreen (where it matters most!). now, things get complicated on the homescreen also. there may be:
a. NO homescreen plugin OR...
b. the native "titanium" homescreen OR...
c. HTC's "sense" homescreen (also called touchflo, manila, etc)
now, simply using a 480x800 file yields the following results...
i think i remember that (a) fails, but most of us have SOME homescreen plugin. i think i remember that (c) also fails because "sense" seems to take over the responsibility to draw a wallpaper in its background.
i have been a loyal HTC "sense" user as long as i was using WM. i always had CHT installed as well (Cookie's Home Tab, a plugin to enhance HTC's "sense" homescreen by adding many more options). i believe CHT1.8.5 and later added a new style of wallpapers and the ability to skin" the "top" and "bottom" bars with corresponding strips of the wallpaper. this meant i could just feed it a 480x800 image and it would do the necessary clipping/cropping/skinning to achieve the effect of a seamless wallpaper, whether on the lockscreen or homescreen or when viewing the start menu. a side effect was that my "top" and "bottom" bars were always skinned, even with an application in the foreground, but such is life!
i hope that helps...

Hey guys I downloaded a theme to my phone but i do not like the portrait picture. How do i just change that picture to something else? Thanks!
SEARCH/READ THE USER'S MANUAL!!!! But, if you hold your stylus down on the picture you want as a background, you'll see the little circle things, then a list of options, like right clicking on a mouse, select set as desktop background. Then select how washed out you want it, and select ok. There, that was your freebie. Use Wiki and search the forum from now on.
no i want to change just the portrait picture. only when i slide my slider. i know how to do that. i remember seeing a deal about that now i cant find it.
I'm pretty sure there's no way to change JUST the portait picture. You mean like having 2 seperate desktop pitures with one to display in landscape, and the other in portrait, right?
Yeah. But I found a way of doing. Just a little more work than I intended. Thanks!
HEY! this is give and take here... So spill the beans, how did you do it?
Yeah! this I gotta know about. You may have found a secret no one knows. The other question is: how can you re-size a pic so that when it is used as a desktop background, it only uses a portion of the screen and doesn't obscure say the whole "black theme" in use?
I'll let you guys know as soon as i get it done. Haven't even tried yet. Been playing around with different ROMs to see which I like better. So far I'm diggin the Touch-It Light.
--slLy-Dee
if you want to change picure ionly in portrait mode, bud not landscape, you must force edit the Theme you want.... or, ... maybe if it is multiple images theme, just replace one of them, but most are 1 file, .... in that case you have no chance without any program..
Google search for ThemeGenCE. It works like a charm and allows one to change the portrait (slide closed) and landscape (slide open) to different pics. it will also change almost all of the colors. I'll try to post a screen shot of the Halo3 theme I built with it. I've built about 12 different .tsk files with it so far and all of them turned out pretty well. It will also let you import an existing theme and modify it. I used the black touch skin and applied my own pics.
It automatically resizes pics to fit the screen...
Yeah. That's what I was gonna play with but never had the chance. I forgot what the prog was that's why I never bothered. Thanks!!
the gloss from WM6 doesn't show up when you make a theme using ThemeGenCE?
The gloss???
wow thats nice....this will work with the wing correct???
Yes... I'm currently running it on a wing. I'm having some issues getting the color fades on the start bar to work. It has to do with the WM5 tab but the descriptions are a bit cryptic as to what fields they actually represent. So I built one with a LOT of really out there colors to see what field effects what part of the screen. If you don't use the stuff on the WM5 tab then it will just be solid colors. The Halo3 one wound up just being green instead of the orange/green fade at the top. That screenshot is from the previewer in the program not what actually wound up on the phone.

Probably a stupid question but what were the size image options you put in? In the options it asks about the size of the screen & the size of the start menu
I'm probably preaching to the noobs here since most of you seasoned veterans should already know all this. I just thought I would contribute something by consolidating a couple of easy tricks.
Sure, there are numerous themes out there. But these days, there's so many versions of Manila that it can get frustrating to find which theme works for your ROM. So, here's a couple of tips to personalize your device regardless of Manila version.
1. Make your taskbar more interesting and useful
There's really no reason to stick with the default WinMo taskbar. It's bland, boring, and you can only see battery level in 4 increments. There are numerous custom taskbars out there but I find this one the most eye-pleasing to me. Brian's Taskbar
2. Make your wallpaper visible on all tabs of Sense. And don't let landscape orientation mess up the image.
If you use Manila/TouchFlo3D/Sense, don't bother setting your wallpaper via the Settings tab. Your wallpaper will look alright on your Home tab in portrait mode. But you won't be able to see your wallpaper in your other tabs. And if you switch to landscape orientation, your wallpaper will look horrible. This tool solves all these problems. You can also use a completely different wallpaper for landscape if you choose to. HDWall
(The program is easy to figure out. Take the time and patience to do so. It is worth it.)
3. Keep your Today background beautiful in both landscape and portrait orientation
Those of you who use the default Today screen (instead of Sense, Mobile Shell, etc) will know that you set your wallpaper by doing one of the following:
Option A:
-go to "Today" settings
-toggle on "Use this picture as the background"
-tap "Browse" and then select the image file.
-tap "OK"
Option B:
-open the "Pictures & Videos" application
-Browse to the image file and open it
-Tap "Menu"
-Tap "Set as Today Background..."
-Move the selection area according to your own preference.
-Keep transparency level at 0% (This is an odd setting. I can't fathom a reason for not setting it at 0%)
-Tap "OK"
Rather than using a 480 by 800 image. Try using an image that is 1333 by 800 (width by height).
For WinMo 6.5 users who use HTC Sense, this tip still applies to you. This affects the lockscreen image and the background image of the Start Menu.
Awesome! Thanks! Yes there are noobs out there (...me). I definitely appreciate this. Can't wait to try it out!
Thanks, I am a noob and am trying to decipher all these options. Maybe there can be just series of Noob Stickies...?
And I thought I would find out about lipstick and thong undies here...
I just use an 800x800 image... works just the same.

You're absolutely right. If you use an 800x800 image, the wallpaper displayed will not be scaled down and will be shown in full resolution.
However, here's the reason why I suggested using a 1333x800 image:
See the first attachment named 800x800jpg.
The blue represents the part of the wallpaper visible to you in portrait mode.
The red represents the part of the wallpaper visible in landscape mode. (Of course, imagine that the red extends behind the parts covered by blue in the middle.)
But as you can see, there's some chunks of white areas. Those parts of the image will never be displayed.
If you use a 1333x800 image, every pixel will be displayed in landscape mode. See 2nd attachment named 1333x800.jpg.
800x800 vs 1333x800
I agree entirely with the post above (very useful illustrations).
The only thing I would point out is that the 800x800 wallpaper misses out the corners of the picture in both orientations, whereas the larger wallpaper misses nothing out in one, but huge amounts in the other.
So I think it all depends on the composition of the picture really - if most of the picture is interesting then go for 800x800, if the best bits are in the centre third then go for the larger dimensions.
Of course it also depends on which orientation you spend most time using your phone in...
Just what i was looking for since Energy changed taskbar icons.
Brian's Taskbar looks awsome on the phone and ALSO seemed to make many other icons look more stylish such as storage card and folder icons. Im sure i will run into more stuff from this. Thanks
I have to say thanks for this post. I was unaware of another stable taskbar aside from Tsowen's work and Brian's definitely rocks.
Great post. I'm not exactly a noob, but I haven't spent any quality time with my phone for the last couple of months. I was waiting until some of the bugs got worked out on the programs I was hoping to use. And besides, hubby just got a Verizon Palm Pre so it renewed my interest in making my phone that much better than his.
Your directions were so complete and easy to use. My phone looks great now. That 3rd step was one I hadn't thought of. Last night I installed Brian's taskbar and HDwalls. The wallpaper looked wonderful. I thought I was stuck with the default background for the start menu until I got up this morning and tried your step 3. Now I'm a very happy camper. Thanks for the effort you took in writing this post.
Maybe a bit of a silly question, but I love those tomatoes on the lock screen. Is there any possibility that you could post that picture here?
Thanks in advance
Thanks! was looking to change the default taskbar, but didn't know how.. now i do
BTW: also like the tomatos!

would be helpful if you mentioned what ROM you're using and what taskbar is causing you difficulties....
WM 6.5
Rom 1.86.415.2 (67102)
and i tried both brain's taskbar and spike's
few min ago i used another Brain taske bar
(New_F_ Brians WM6.5 Taskbar gfreek edition V5a.cab)
it works without a bug in the signal icon , but i'm not lovin the icons really niko's were much pleasant for me, especially the start icon its not the htc logo
also i have another question my friend, which i chose to show clock on taskbar , it used to show it in any running program but not in the Home screan and it's taps , which is logic
since i update the Rom and the clock in the task bar shows in the Home screan and make the battery disappears !!!!!
even when i installed this brain taskbar also the clock removes the battery icon from the home screan
Could anyone pls try the following?
Set as background for both lockscreen and homescreen the same picture with a gradient: you can use the circular gradient that the phone has already stored.
in the lockscreen the gradient is very visible while in the homescreen it's very smooth.
weird...
Can you take any screenshots?
The background in the lock screen is actually of higher resolution than the sense one. This is because sense does something awkward to images. It crops a smaller part and then stretches it to fit the whole home screen.
The lockscreen seems to recompress the images indeed. A perfect image once set as lockscreen appears like an awfully blocky JPG. I guess it doesn't use the image as is but makes a badly compressed copy.
I use S2U2 now, that sort of solves the problem

From my experience, it's the other way round.
The image you see on the lockscreen is the Windows Today background, and that's just a centered view of the image you select. It doesn't do any cropping or resizing whatsoever.
For the OP - try HDWall. It allows you to have high quality images for wallpaper, as well as having the wallpaper work on all tabs. It's in the themes and apps forum. If you do use it, you'll need to install the HQ patch in the first post the first time you use it, or the backgrounds don't look right. Using HDWall, I struggle to see the difference between the manila background and the start menu/lock screen.
Hope this helps
here are the screeshots
The images I tried were exactly 480x800 as I made them on purpose. When viewing them on the device (with HTC Album or Resco photo manager), they look perfectly good, but on the lockscreen they're awful.
Sense indeed applies some kind of "grainy" post-processing, but I don't mind it, in Sense the background is not very apparent, I actually just use a default WP.
But anyway, some screenshots:
Sense rendering:
Lockscreen:
S2U2:
See how the lockscreen one appears hugely blocky? OK the original pic I used wasn't perfect for a start, but you can clearly see the difference between S2U2 that just displays the image as is and the recompression the lockscreen does.
As far as I can see, the HDWall works only with wallpaperss in a cab file.
Is there an other way to have HQ Wallpapers in a "normal way"?
Im using the Theme Maker from Max as well but there seems no HQ option to be included.

Any update??
I was checking zedge.net and found the wallpapers were posted there all of so small resolution. At first I thought it was the 480*800 resolution but then found the HD2 walls were right, but not Desire's. Why?
Its because as you swipe through the screens the wallpaper moves. I don't have a problem with them
While you're right about the wallpaper moving, the Zedge files are oversized. Try to set a standard wallpaper using the built-in function, not Zedge. You'll be brought to a screen with a crop rectangle that you can move around the picture, to select what will be shown on the screen. The crop is significantly smaller than the actual image.
The problem is... even the HTC original wallpapers are too large, as well. I don't think it's a Zedge-only issue. I wonder how the N1 handles standard wallpapers...

Try giving that crop rectangle a pull at one of the corners or sides.
Thanks for the tip, I had no idea you could resize the crop rectangle
Well... I guess that leaves just Zedge acting weirdly...
Honestly, I'm not really sure why this has to be so difficult. There seems to be a million different ways to set a scrolling wallpaper.
First let me tell my setup. I'm using Nova Launcher and I force it to remain in landscape mode, so when I'm on my home screen it won't rotate. This should make setting my wallpaper easier. I just need wallpaper for landscape.
I basically want to get a wallpaper that's 5300x1600 and I want it to be DOT-BY-DOT on my background. In theory this wallpaper should never have to be cropped since the resolution is basically 2 nexus 10 screens side by side. The number of pages I have on my homescreen should simply only determine how far the wallpaper shifts each time I move to another page. Less pages means greater shift.
However, no matter how I set the wallpaper, it always seems to crop completely randomly and wrong. For example, the Nova wallpaper setter has a strange cropping indicator (looks like a fat cross) that makes no sense, and the background ends up looking huge (cropped too much) and doesn't shift much when I move to the left and right through screens.
Can anyone help me find the perfect way to setup my scrolling wallpaper? Thanks.
i dont know about scrolling...but you can use simple image wallpaper to use a static image without cropping and it sets it as a live wallpaper even though its not but works perfectly
You may have to use this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.tamanegi.wallpaper.multipicture
I've had TONS of trouble with using the Gallery to set my wallpaper due to cropping. On the other hand, I THINK QuickPic worked well but its been years since I've used that. Well, A year.

Use nova launcher, edit this wallpaper you got with paint, change the resolution to 2560x1600. Set this wallpaper with nova and it will be DOT-BY-DOT on your background. You can't do it with 5300x1600.
The fat cross is for the landscape preview (the horizontal bar of the cross) and the portrait preview (the vertical one).
I'm using Nova and I look for wallpapers that are around 4000x2000 so that when I crop, it fits around the tablet's resolution without losing quality.
Basically the highlighted portions in the cross will be the background of the primary home screen. It'll shift left and right as you scroll. It's not at all complicated, not even from Gallery. It's quite easy to operate.
