Dl09 gps not initializing - Fascinate General

So I've noticed when I try to do navigation in dl09 maps/nav says searching for gps but my gps icon never shows up in the notification bar.
Since dl09 it took longer to lock onto gps but today it just isn't doing it at all. Any ideas guys?
Edit: I reboot and it locked on no problem and within 5 seconds..wtf

I've had the same issue with DJ05. A reboot always fixes it.

I haven't had any problems with GPS yet. Works best on DL09, its the most consistent anyway.

I've got the same issue my GPS will stop working after a while and then when I reboot it works flawlessly. It is very annoying.

Same except mine wont always be fixed with a reboot. Just tried it, locked in 6 seconds. But it wont last. Sigh....

(SOLVED, DUH!) What happened to my GPS?

So my searches on this have turned up nothing similar. Forgive me if this has been covered somewhere.
Device: Epic 4g running Syndicate 1.02 Standard
Problem: GPS won't even turn on now.
Background: GPS was working normally (albeit badly, as we all know) until yesterday. Was able to toggle on and off.
Now: Toggle switch in pull-down lights up as if activating GPS but no familiar toggle sound. Wifi, BT, and 4g toggles still functioning and making the sound. When I go to Location Settings to activate, still no GPS. Toggle switch does light up if GPS activated from settings.
What I've tried: Not having any idea what could have caused this, I figured I'd just make a Titanium backup and use Odin to go back to DI18 using whosdaman's .tar. That should do the trick, right? WRONG! So then I figured, ok let's just go back to square 1 and used Odin to go back to DG27, same as the day I bought it. Still nothing!!!
Did I somehow truly brick the GPS?
Thanks in advance for any help with this.

AFAIK there never has been an audible confirmation at the notification bar when the GPS radio is toggled on or off. That's certainly the way my stock Epic running DI18 works.
What makes you think the GPS radio is not working? Have you tried a utility such as GPS Test? Very likely your GPS radio is functioning, and you are just being bitten by the failure-to-lock GPS bug that afflicts all Epics over time when the GPS cache data gets hosed.

That pulsating icon only appears when some app actually starts the GPS. Just enabling the GPS toggle does not start it.
Wow I feel dumb. See I was using the google maps widget yesterday and was driving to a friends house and it wasn't using my gps location even with GPS turned on. Was only using the network.
I got so focused on getting "no response" from enabling and disabling the GPS that I failed to realize that the google map widget may not actually use GPS! It didn't occur to my retardedness to try using an app that I KNEW used GPS!!!!
Thanks boomer for helping me pull my head out of my arse!

[Q] Does anyone else have this problem with their GPS?

Ok so my problem is whenever I leave my phone on for an extended amount of time the gps just will not lock at all but after I reboot the phone it locks within a couple of seconds. This has been happening with each radio Di01, dj05, and Dl09. I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem and whether or not it is a hardware problem?
Nope. With DI01 I had issue where it took forever to lock, if at all. With DL09 I have no issue at all. Connects quickly and just works.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
yeah. I thought I was the only one noticing that.
If I go into the gps setup (Dial: *#1472365#) and then go to command and start the gps, if the phone has been running for a long time, it will just sit there and say Number of Satellites: 0
But if I reboot, it starts finding satellites immediately and gets a fix super quickly.
Di01 was a nightmare with GPS locks...took upwards of 10 min or so. With dj09, I lock within 5 seconds max.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
anyone notice even though the GPS locks, it's off by a lot? went back to DJ05 for now....on the wife's Fascinate
I may be seeing the same thing as you Jaybap. Can you elaborate what a "long time" is since boot that you're seeing? 12hrs? 2 days?
I had horrendous issues w/ GPS on OEM DI01 prior to playing around with Adryn's local xtra.bin solution. I'm now on OEM DL09 and for a day or so after the install GPS would lock w/in 10-15 seconds outside. I leave GPS and VZ Assist on all the time. Accuracy is dead-on for me. I'm using GPS Test and GPS Status apps for testing.
I am now noticing that after some amount of time (at least more than 24-36hrs after installing DL09, no boots since install) that my GPS tests took longer to lock (>1 minute). The GPS icon in the notify bar wouldn't animate while searching for satellites and at one point GPS Status seemed to hang/freeze (no FC). So after i saw this thread I booted the phone. Now the GPS icon animation is back when initially searching for satellites and i get a lock in 10-15sec. So ya might be onto something...
BTW - I'm guessing the GPS icon animates when searching for satellites; becomes a static icon once a lock is achieved.
How do I dl and install DL09?
Having GPS capability was one of the reasons I upgraded from a non-smartphone to a smartphone. Just my luck that the smartphone I choose has serious GPS issues.
How might I go about dling and installing this fix for the GPS?
Thanks.
keena It's the same way with my phone the gps icon stops animating and this occurs after i leave my phone on for a few hours and it takes minutes to lock when it used to take seconds.
I have the same issues. I can get a lock in seconds after I reboot, but if my phone has been on for more than 10 min getting a lock can take as long as 45 min or more, if at all.

Yeah, I nabbed mine on October 1st, so basically September.
But I'm still wondering if it's software related. Like maybe one thing (app? system?) in the background is trying to access the gps and won't let go of it for other apps to use.
Also, possibly unrelated: are you guys using Task Killers at all?
I also have the same issue as the OP. The only time I ever reboot my phone is right before I use Runkeeper... otherwise the Gps never locks.
I'm on dj05 using jt's clean rom & voodoo.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
I bought my phone the 2nd week of December. I don't run any task killer or battery minder apps...basically just a rooted OEM DL09.
I noticed that if you turn on the GPS and leave it on all the time. It will always lock on fast whenever you turn on Google Navi/Maps. If you turn on the GPS, turn it off for a while, and later, turn on Navi, it will sometimes take forever to lock on.

DL30 and GPS

I still notice the gps still takes long to lock in. any suggestions?
Strange, Mines been locking on in no more that 45 seconds, Usually 10 seconds since DJ05...
DLO9 - using leaked 2.2 Rom
My GPS is taking much longer to lock also - i guess its the trade-off for getting 2.2.
The leak 2.2 rom run better than the other Roms I tried.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Odd, mine locks on better than any 2.1 rom and almost instantly.
Oddly enough, got worse on superclean 2.2. With DL09 and superclean (with help from gps status) i was locking within 10-15 seconds, now it takes upwards of 45s-1minute, if it locks at all. A little disappointing, but nothing to make me dump 2.2. Crossing my fingers that it'll get better....
My experience with all 2.2 ROMs so far has been that GPS either locks near-instantly (<15s) or absolutely will not lock at all. It seems to be about a 50/50 crapshoot. If it doesn't work, turning GPS off, waiting a few moments, and then turning it back on and trying again *usually* gets it working.
Granted I haven't tried since jt released the updated recovery, so I'll have to check a few more times and report back.
Try flashing the DJ05 GPS fix that was tested on people with Dl01?
I've long given up on the GPS, I just use my Iphone 3GS that without data connection still locks on really fast.
I tried DL09 when first going to Superclean 1.0. The GPS would lose the signal then regain it. This happened about three times during a hour long route.
Flashed DJ05 last night and tried the GPS again this morning and not once did it lose the signal driving into work.
My gps doesn't WORK AT ALL with DL30 superclean 1.0.
Mine locks in 10 seconds or less running DL30 SuperClean 1.0 with DJ05 radio.
I have been having a problem with GPS on DL30/DL09 also. Here is how I got it to lock today in less than 10 seconds.
1. Download GPS Status from the market.
2. Run GPS Status and let it download the AGPS data.
3. Go into settings>GPS & Sensors>Auto-download AGPS data and set it to never.
4. Close GPS Status and reboot phone with GPS turned on.
5. Once booted, run GPS Status and hopefully you will get almost insta-lock.
6. Open Maps or Navigation and you should be good to go.
Next time you try GPS and it doesnt lock, go back into GPS Status>options>tools>download and manually download the AGPS data then reboot.
Its a pain but its the only way I know of thus far to get "insta-lock" after going Froyo on my phone. I dont use my GPS all that often so this method isnt a big deal for me, but if I relied on GPS daily, I would seriously consider buying a different phone at this point. That or try and get a refurb that has a working GPS like some people here seem to have.

Didn't work for me. installed DJ05 and still nothing :[
Ive had some weird experience with GPS. DI01 My gps was garbage. like 2 mile blue sphere. DJ05 my gps was pretty good... locked accurately but took about 2 minutes. Borked my phone trying to edit some stuff... redid DJ05... GPS didnt work again... did DL09... GPS still didnt work... redid DL09... GPS worked pretty well again... DID DL30... GPS locks nearly instantly and almost perfectly.
It seems like every time I flash I have different results...even when sometimes I'm flashing the same roms from the same sources. I don't really get it... I'm almost in the same areas so it should be consistant.
I always clear all the caches and everything :\
Ive done many different gps tests and here is whats happening...if you try to turn gps on through the notification pulldown...it takes a while. If you turn gps on through settings...location and security...standalone gps...its instant. After turning gps on through settings, it will work from the pulldown every time instantly. Basically it needs to be turned on from settings for the 1st time after a reboot...then the pulldown will be instant. To test this, reboot phone with gps off, when it boots turn gps on from the pulldown...it wont lock...go to settings and turn it off then on...it will lock instantly. Like i said, it seems to need to be turned on through settings initially, then it works instantly any way you use it...hope i helped.
That's strange. I haven't had an issue locking on since DI01. I also love how fantastically loud the Nav directions are now. I agree that gps status can greatly accelerate the locking on process.

Yes. Unfortunately the Epic suffers from a few GPS problems under EC05 and we're working on a comprehensive fix for them. However, we're still trying to understand exactly what folks's problems with the GPS are. If you're willing, you could be an incredible help with that.
Has your GPS ever worked prior to EC05? Did it stop working after you upgraded, and hasn't since?
Also, please use GPS Test when testing the GPS as it allows for the easiest understanding of what your current problems are. When using GPS Test, you'll probably want to go into Menu, Settings, and disable the "Keep screen on" option so your screen doesn't shutoff while attempting a fix.
Can you run GPS Test and report what happens? A "good" fix is when the "GPS on" light turns green in 10 seconds or so. A "poor" is when it takes anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes to get a fix outdoor in clear skies. "No" fix is when it's unable to get a fix even after 4-5 minutes of good visibility.
If you can report back how GPS Test works, we can debug this a bit further.
I can report on a rooted stock EC05 that GPS has stopped working altogether. Using gps test it never gets a signal. In Maps, the gps icon doesn't even turn on any more. Yes, gps is enabled under settings. This behavior first appeared after I installed Advanced Task Killer and I am not sure if ATK is killing some process that keeps gps from starting. Any ideas or any more info I could provide you to try to help figure it out?

So in GPS Test the "GPS on" light just stays yellow and the GPS icon in the notification bar just blinks? And this is across full reboots (power cycles) too?

It's probably unrelated to ATK. Did it work in EC05 prior to ATK?
We've identified a few issues with the GPS in EC05, one of which is that the GPS can crash and programs are no longer able to use it, but it recovers again after a full power cycle.
What we haven't been able to identify yet are the exact causes of why the GPS doesn't work at all for some folks. Mostly since everyone who has posted in the development thread now have working GPSes, so we no longer can get solid debugging info on them.

Yes, definitely. Are you familiar with running adb commands?
If you can, what would be really helpful would be to enable "USB debugging" on your phone, and reboot (full power cycle) it. Then, as soon as the phone is booted (network is up and it's done "Preparing external SD card"), plug in the USB cable and run on your computer in a command line:
Code:
adb shell "logcat -v time > /sdcard/logcat.txt"
That command shouldn't return immediately, which is what we want. Wait a few seconds, then run GPS Test and wait about 30 seconds or so. Then close GPS Test, and do a Control-C in the "adb shell" terminal which stops the logcat.
Finally, pull "logcat.txt" off your SD card and either attach it here, host it, or email it to me, I'll PM you the details.
Sorry it's a bit complicated, but that's the only way we've been able to get all the necessary information on what the GPS does from boot through a first fix attempt. If you have any questions about running that, feel free to ask.
Thanks!
Hi Mkasick,
so I just rebooted, and fortunately (or unfortunately) gps works. This is how it seems to go for me. It will work for a while on a fresh reboot, but after a while (maybe a day or half day) it fails to start again. When it doesn't work, the gps test behavior you describe is exactly right - icon says "on" and icon light stays yellow. So I assume the ADB logcat file is not meaningful to you if it works right now, correct?
I should also say that from time to time, toggling other radios using the drop down menu from the status bar also fails to work. Wifi specifically will fail to toggle on. Again, this usually happens after the phone is on for a day or so. Glad to hear that ATK is not the likely culprit because installing it has really improved my battery life a lot.
Let me know what I can do to help. You are awesome for working to make this phone better for the rest of us who don't have any coding skills. Should I get that logcat file the next time I notice the gps won't start?

OK, there's a few different issues that can cause that.
One is that the GPS will randomly crash upon exiting or switching away from a GPS-utilizing app, roughly every 1 in 20 times. When it does, the GPS no longer responds to any commands and the GPS icon will stay lit even after you close an app. We're finishing a workaround for this and I'll post it in the next day or two.
The other issue is that the GPS's ephemeris data appears to go stale earlier than it should. Here the GPS appears to work normally, with regard to icons blinking and such, it just can't use any satellites it finds for a few minutes, but if you're outside on a clear day it will eventually fix again. The existing workaround may address this. If you find the GPS won't fix, you can toggle the GPS icon outside of an app and that will download new assistance data which should hopefully help.

Probably not. Actually it might be hard to debug the GPS issues further until I get the crash workaround posted. In the meantime, you can at least discern if the problem is the crash by installing CatLog, and after the GPS demonstrates issues, open the CatLog and look for a line that says:
Code:
E/libgps (####): RIL Request: ERROR 1 (n=110, r=0)
The "n=110" is in particular a good indication of a GPS crash.

I've seen this on occasion too, but not frequently. I haven't had a chance to look into this issue further. It's possible ATK could be responsible here.
Mind running a few days with ATK off just to see if those issues continue to persist?

Thanks! At this point, I'm not sure a logcat will show anything new as long as your GPS does work after reboot. Probably the most useful thing would be to report if the existing workaround helps when your GPS stops working, as long as it's not due to a crash (which CatLog can verify).
I'll try to get that second workaround posted soon. This GPS crashing is annoying and hinders the debugging of other GPS issues.
So neither of the types of crash you describe really apply to what is happening to me. After my gps fails, the icon never comes on. Under the settings menu it says it is enabled, but no application ever gets the icon to come up and there is never any kind of message saying gps signal is lost or unavailable or anything like that. I will try to do what you say with regards to CatLog and send you whatever files seem relevant. ATK will be turned off.
Thanks again!

That could be a crash. If the icon is on when it crashes, it will likely stay on until "Use GPS satellites" is toggled, at which point it will turn off and stay off. If the icon is off when it crashes, then it never comes on again.
The status of the icon doesn't matter as much as the GPS is utterly unresponsive as far as the phone is concerned.

I've just posted the crash workaround. Feel free to flash it (gps_request_sync-EC05.zip in that thread). It's been tested on stock EC05 and SRF 1.1.0, althugh I think it should work on any EC05 ROM.
That alone may resolve your issues, if not, also try the assistance workaround in the same thread and we can go from there.
My GPS was working perfectly for months using the forced cold start. It has had the problem since the update to Froyo.
I tried this one and it is a "fail" as doesn't work at all after a couple of days.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1028618
It seems to work at first but I think the "fix" has to do with rebooting the phone, as after a couple of days of uptime the problem of the Epic not using satellites that it sees returns.
I am now trying this one:

My GPS randomly gets no lock without a reboot. This has happened after EC05 update. Now have Bonsai 4.0.1 and Genocide 1.0 kernel. This fix should resolve that right?

GPS issues..

The GPS on my phone has not been locking since I flashed CM7. I searched through some fixes but none seemed to help. I went back to the backup I had before I put CM7 on and the gps seemed to lock just fine. So I tried to flash while it had a lock but still nothing. I even tried using the GPS status app and that did nothing. Any other fixes that could help? Thanks
Have you tried flashing a different kernel? Maybe x99's or scaryghoul's as they are aosp roms their in the dev section. Always wipe your dalvik-cache b4 you flash a new kernel,I have very few issues when I do.

My GPS actually locks instantly after I flashed CM7 and x99
I have only one problem. Sometimes it'll lose a signal and will never get signal again on its own.
The quickest and only solution (that I know) is to quickly exit Navigation, then go in and tap on the most recent trip and voila, instant GPS lock again.
Not a huge problem, but a weird annoyance.

I assume you mean Google Navigation? If so I think that is a problem with Google Navigation itself. I have the exact same issue on my stock but rooted Shift. It will lose GPS lock, usually within the first couple of minutes. It then is never able to reestablish the lock on its own. If I exit Navigation and go back in, or turn the GPS off then back on it gets a lock and keeps it.
I just started trying Google Navigation. I have been using Telenav since getting the Shift about 2 months ago. With Telenav I never lost GPS lock.
i've found, atleast for me, that this tends to happen when i have GPS off, then turn it on to use it and open telenav and it just cannot find a GPS lock. so i leave GPS on and reboot my phone, open televav back up and it finds a GPS lock pretty quickly. it's like if i turn off GPS, i can't get it to work again until i reboot my phone...
needless to say, GPS sucks ass on this phone. i've never had a phone with GPS problems like this one. but other than that, everything is perfect.
mine happens when somebody attempts to call me, the lock disappears. after i ignore the call, like others have stated it locks on instantly when i go back into navigation. but i do prefer telenav over google... traffic is on point :]
i've been having gps issues, i think its a bug in google maps. havent had time to test root on it yet
It seems like nothing wants to work. I installed the x99 kernel and my GPS will still not connect. It seems like it will only connect when I'm on stock. For some reason I cannot get it to work with CM7.
Look up the ##gpsclrx# fix. I don't remember all the steps but it requires you to reflash a Sense rom, dial ##gpsclrx#, enter your MSL (found via MSL Reader on HTC devices), reboot, maybe clear cache, and then reflash your rom of choice. Fixed my CM7 gps issues (even with the MSL "password" prompt telling me that the password was wrong).
Nan to stock . Use GPS on stock leave it on. Nan to or redownload cyanogen and GPS will work. Happens to me when first putting in a rom sometimes.
