I believe you need s-off with perm root. Or else the apps will come back each time you restart. But dont quote me on this
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App

don't need perm root... if you have S=Off and temp root you can do
adb remount
or open a terminal and do
mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk0p25 /system
Then remove any offending .apk files from /system/app. Upon rebooting, you will no longer have rw access to system and you won't be rooted either, but the programs will be gone. You may want to go the simpler route of temp rooting and installing Titanium Backup then uninstalling them through that.

Only HALF rooted on 2.2???

Is anyone else in the same boat as me, where they updated prior to instructions reading to move SU to xbin????
I have the SU in my app drawer, I have loaded setcpu and other root programs like barnacle, but I CANNOT for the life of me get the other half of the root apps to work because it says I DO NOT have SU permissions.... like Root Explorer for example.
I wouldn't mind sbf'n it back to 2.1 and then back to 2.2 again at all, just not quite sure what to do.... an ideas?
I was in the same boat as you after upgrading to 2.2 even though I thought I did the xbin step correct, guess not.
Anyways, the only way I fixed it was to completely flash my phone, I didn't mind doing this because it's always nice to start with a fresh install.
This guide was the best for me, simple and includes all necessary links.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=758907
Make sure you have busybox installed. There is an appliaction in the market that will download it..
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
If you didnt move su to xbin, you will HAVE to sbf your x and redo everything to get 2.2 with root. Thats what happened to me.
I did this also...half root and stuff. I used astro to install the su apk off my sd card. I didn't have the ninja guy in my app drawer though. But could run set cpu. Not root explorer. I just again installed the su apk from sd. And it showed up in my app drawer. And I was able to install root explorer. Just my 2's

A fix without adb
To anyone that has run into this problem I have a solution. This is for everyone that missed the step on keeping your root access. If you have su in xbin and still won't work this will work for you.
(Open terminal emulator) type the following:
/system/xbin/su
Then you should see a #
Run "mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/system /system"
Run "mv /system/bin/su /system/bin/su.bak"
Run "cd /system/xbin/"
Run "cp su ../bin/"
Then you should have your root access again!
and one more thing, don't type the word run or put the " " in this code
Same thing happened to me as well, I SBF'd back the first run and did everything EXCEPT the moving su to xbin, and well.... I had to do it all over again, took a bit of time, but now root works again.

Issues with ROM Manager and others

Ok bear with me, this is the only the second phone i have rooted. I am having issues with the rom manager and root explorer.
The rom manager works, it does not force close, but when i ask it to do something like backup or install a rom, it does nothing, litterally i can click something else and same thing, it does nothing. I tried uninstalling and even factory reset. Still dont work.
Also the root explorer, it says "Root explorer has not yet manage to obtain root access. " i get that every time i restart it, same issue.
I have froyo 2.2 and used easy root http://www.unstableapps.com/?p=35
You need they droid x bootstrapper from the market to get into recovery, and titanium backup from market, hit problems & download busybox.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
thanks, i'll get them now and report back.
Now do i put the bootstrap in the root of the sd and use a app installer?
ok, titanium backup said it wont work because the root access failed and after i downloaded busybox it wont install
I'd try the one-click root or and root, both have to be downloaded by pc.if u got the free bootstrap use an app installer.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
still having the same issue, maybe its 2.2? is there a Root ROm?
Yeah, in rom manager. You have to be rooted 2.1. Have you ever flashed a sbf. I'd try unrooting with easy root then using another method
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Almost sounds like the root didn't take properly
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
hey guys, I flashed back to stock and rerooted. Everything works now. Thanks guys,
My only gripe is i dont have flash anymore T_T
Are you on 2.1 or 2.2, you can find flash apk. right here on xda.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
ahh cool. Now what if i use the 2.2 guide on here? Is it the 2.2 or do u think it was the root?
I'd say it was the root. Easiest way to get back to 2.2 would be Rom Manager. Look in download rom,2.1 to 2.2 root. Just make sure you flash the latest recovery in rom manager & the current boot strap which is 1.0.0.3
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
ok i redid everything, went back to 2.2 using all the methods, and i am still having issues, i dont know whats up with this
What method did you use to root. I messed up theming yesterday, had to sbf. Reroot & went back to 2.2 through rom manager. It went fine. What's it doing now?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
dbl post sry
i used one click root. its doing the same thing as last time.
edit-----
I did a google search for a good 15 minutes and found this
1.) Run "adb shell"
2.) Run "/system/xbin/su"
*****Watch your screen for Superuser app to prompt for permission and click "allow" (if you go from $ to # without being asked for permission, continue with the next step
3.) Run "mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/system /system"
4.) Run "cp /system/xbin/su /system/bin/su"
5.) Run "chmod 4755 /system/bin/su"
[optional] Run "mount -o remount,ro /dev/block/system /system"

Everything works like a charm! If you root at 2.1 then go to 2.2, this will fix your problem

[Q] Can't Remove Copilot Trial in 2.2 Streak Beta

i updated my streak to the 2.2 FROYO update meant for US STreak BETA devices and it comes preinstalled with Copilot Trial which i cant remove with Titanium Backup is there any other way???
First and formost, you must be rooted unless you use adb
*Using a file explorer that has root access. I like SUFBS (SU File Manager & Terminal) myself many people like root explorer tho.
Just mount /system as read/write and delete the apk from /system/app and your done.
or
*using adb
adb remount
adb shell ls /system/app <<*This is just to see a list of all the apps in /system/app. I am unsure of the exact name of the copilot apk. If you know, skip this step.
adb shell rm /system/app/name of file you wish to remove
or
*using terminal
su
mount -o rw,remount /system
cd /system/app
ls <<<*again because I don't know the exact name of the apk file
rm name of the file you wish to remove
FIRSTLY << If that is a word ... I am a "root" virgin .. I used something called z4root . . I don't know if it worked .. I don't know why I even would want to 'root' my streak other than to remove unnecessary programs. In any case I haven't figured out how to do ANYTHING .. The directions below are probably clear to some, but could you or someone else do a "root for dummies" explanation or better yet, do a "adb" for dummies then I don't need to worry if I have rooted it or not. No rush ..

I've not been able to get universal androot to work with 2.2, but z4root definitely has.
if you see an app called "superuser" or "superuser permissions", youre rooted. the app you are looking to delete is /system/app/copilot.apk

Cannot get r/w access in /system with new froyo release

Since updating to the new froyo I have root, but I cannot get root explorer to be able to access /system in any way possible, it reads it but cannot write/modify.
I have replaced every root file with a new version, even tried the /system on boot set to r/w method with that market app. Its getting frustrated as this has ALWAYS worked before.
Did you come from voodoo?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I had a lot of trouble with Root Explorer as well. Super Manager has worked much better with the r/w access.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I'll give it a shot using that other app and see what happens.
That app still only has r/o access. Super user isn't granting my phone r/w access for /system.

You positive you still are root? Try the root process again just for ****s and giggles...
Run one of the following with your phone connected to your computer and try again.
Voodoo:
Code:
adb shell mount -o remount,rw -t ext4 /dev/block/stl9 /system
Non-Voodoo:
Code:
adb shell mount -o remount,rw -t rfs /dev/block/stl9 /system
Yes, I'm getting this too.
Not only this. I use android commander to see what's in the folders.
While I'm in CWM in the phone, Android Commander shows only one folder in /system. That folder is /system/etc. This might explain why I can't flash anything into my phone to save my life. Anyone know what could be causing this?
It's odd because when my phone boots up, Android Commander shows /system will all of it's glory...

I have the exact same issue. Just talked it over with Adrynalyne.
You are going to have to download an All-In-One Odin Package such as
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=867648
Then, you're going to have to start over and flash your CWM Recovery from jt
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=942021
Then you Odin flash the modem of the ROM that you want to install, then you use CWM to flash the ROM that you want to install...
Make sure that you do to not flash using Phone. Use PDA option in Odin.
Apparently, it's a corrupt dbdata partition that is causing it. This can happen occasionally when installing VooDoo... Just another reason to stay away from VooDoo...
BTW, Is this working for you? I think it's working for me as of yet. I'm not done yet so I can't assure you yet.
I don't think is working for me... If it worked for someone else let me know. I don't know what happened.
Re-establishing ROOT using CWM with Adrynalyne modified ChainsDD superuser +busybox package from the link below...

I just installed root explorer and set my system to RW, I can see it all the way through in ADB. Then I re-locked it in root explorer.
