Sorry for the noob question

You need to get root explorer. Google it for the apk. Then set your permissions to read/write in the app. Then you can easily modify those files.

Ok - other question, is there a way to modify or replace the file
/proc/calibration
I can replace the same file in two other locations (/system/etc and /etc) but not the one mentioned above. I tried with root explorer and adb - no success.
If not, i'll live with the generic mac-address
EDIT: i also tried a modified batch from mdj (I updated my kernel today with this one).

Is it possible to move/install any .apk to /system/app

sorry for the double post
Curious..........when we install .apks do they alreadly know where to install its self. some apks i can completely move to the /system/app/ and others go straight to /data/app where most apks go and cannot be moved without FCing
IS there a way to force all data that i want to system/app/
just wanted to know if this is possible...would be sweet
TIA
As far as I know if you install them manually you can install them wherever you want. System or data.
While rom building I've put non-standard apps into the system/app folder with no problem.
If you put them in the system/app folder you might need to make sure the permissions are set right.

I'm probably out of my league here, but I would guess that you should be able to add in the new keyboard (to the SYSTEM folder), select the new keyboard as your default keyboard (using an SMS app or something), then once it's selected you're good to go. You may be able to even delete the old one at that point without any errors?
However, you mentioned cooking and baking so this is what's over my head. Sorry if this doesn't help you.
Also, like that other dude said... "other" apps like the ones installed from the Market usually go in DATA. I noticed that when some ROMs have Maps installed in SYSTEM and you go to update it, it will install the newer version in DATA. I remember seeing in the logcat during boot that the phone detects both versions and just ignores the older version in the SYSTEM folder.

I have used that exact keyboard on ROMs in the past. I did a straight install from the SD card using a file explorer, Astro to be exact.
Maybe I'm missing what you are trying to accomplish, but that's how I installed it. I'm not up on the cooking and baking, but maybe it's different if you are trying to add it to the ROM prior to flashing?
To remove the standard HTC_IME.apk, I would install the new one first then go into adb shell and remove it that route.
The only way I know how to change permissions is by using the Root Explorer app. If you have that you mount r/w and navigate to the apk you wanna change. Then you long press it and go to permissions. It looks like all the ones in /system/app are "User: Read, Write; Group: Read; Others: Read". Hope this helped!

[Q] Replacing build.prop?

hi!
in order to test something, i need to replace the build.prop in root/system with a modified one. but trying to delete this file with astro manager displays an error message, and just copying the modified build.prop over the old one doesn't work too (nothing happens).
so my question is: how do you replace such a file?
thanks in advance for your help
are you serious!?!?!?
If the build.prop is located on the Android folder IT HAS TO BE A SYSTEM FILE !!!
if you mod the system files you could break android or the system just won't let you do it, you will need R and W privileges to do that.
edit the system files from your PC or just boot up in to windows mobile.
use some common scene next time.
hope it helps!
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
Do you use a cyanogen build?
yes and there is already a cyanogen rom posted with the proper build.prop fixed, so you won't have to edit anything, just search for it.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
mmmh actually cyanogen made things easy to replace a system file, just copy your file into sdcard/android/root/system and reboot.
thanks for your help / posts. but unfortunately they're not helpful.
yes, i am serious! and yes, of course it's a system file. i know as well that modification might brick android.
there are reasons for modifying this file. some people seem to be able to, e.g. for chaning screen point density or modify the data passthrough.
so, please tell me, how can i edit/modify a system file from pc or windows mobile when its within the data.img-file?
thanks for any tips / hints on this.
use root explorer

Thank you VERY much for your help - I finally got it to work by listening your instructions. It is simply different if you have HD2 and plus CM mod. That figures why it was going back all the time to 180 instead of changing it - because it runs from sd card and that's where it needs to be replaced as well ...

[Fix] Bluetooth-Sense Roms

I've extracted the bluetooth files from the Ace dump (Used in Desire HD Roms) and these seem to be working for standard Desire Roms too and solve the problem of some non working headsets, well at least for my couple of Plantronics units tested on my froyo/sense build. If anyone wants to test, I enclose the files. For Cm6/ standard froyo maybe try the system/etc files only, but I haven't tested.
Make a backup of your system.ext2 file so you can reverse changes.
Unmount system and place files in: /bin, system/bin. /etc, system/etc.
system/lib. (I deleted the current files first)
Again backup your system.ext2 as this might not work for you.
Do I try this if my bluetooth is connecting but not getting any sounds when calls come in?
Yep that's the problem I had with all builds (except new hd builds) this fixed it for me.

may i know what does it do? right now i have to physically enable bluetooth by using the workaround. will this auto connect our bluetooth like the actual android phones?

Mine autoconnects, when you make a call you can here it in your headset now with no workround, no need pressing this or that button first. There are quite a few new files in the etc, folder which seem to be missing before. If anyone has any luck with this please let us know. ps. If your not using sense based Rom then your bluetooth lib files will be different and maybe wont work, so maybe try only the etc files.
Do you know if this works on the evo builds or just the desire builds?

I am using michyprimas latest evo based kernel. It should work on any sense ROM but maybe you can test?
Sure, still a noob at hacking these systems, a little more direction. I've found the root files using es explorer, now what?
Edit: did the root/system/<lib,etc,bin> directory in my Android folder trick and restarted. It seems to have loaded your files in /system/* , in /etc but not it /bin. It did not seem to fix my problem of no audio. I get all controls working fine (volume, call hang up, etc,) on my Plantronics 520, but no change in the audio, still comes through the speaker.
Maybe if you use something like root explorer to delete and replace the files in all 5 locations, rather than the root method in Android folder, then you can be 100% sure if it works or not. Check also file permissions all boxes ticked (chmod 777)
It's working!! Thank you!
I have never had my LG hbm-520 working correctly with any build until now. The fix doesn't seem to work when I tried it with Hastarin 4.1 but it's working very well with CoreDroid .4 plus Michy R0 evo build.
can someone help me out and tell me where the lib folder is located? I dont see it in the root folder. I see bin and etc but no luck on lib. Does it not exist and that is why i dont see it? I imagine i can just copy them over folder to folder and over write the current ones.
I am having the problem with bluetooth. Everything connects and allows me to control. However when i receive a call i can answer i just cant hear them and they cant hear me. It works if i call them though.
NM i see them in the /system folder. Gonna give it a shot.
So then the question is what location do we replace the files? in / or /system/ or ...?
@ aaronkt; there is an etc folder in the root of your device and within the system folder, copy/ replace files I posted twice, ie to both locations. Exactly the same to bin folder both locations, lastly to lib folder located within system folder.

Turn on the root explorer settings then you can copy over the files. Turn the settings off after you're done.
Fantastic,
this fixed all my problem with the car free speaking in my Ford S-Max.

Hi London Guy,
Could you please extract for us the hTC ebooker reader from the Desire HD rom. I imagine if the files are extracted the Reader maybe be able to work with the Evo and other roms even though its currently not working even with the HD rom. Sorry I dont know how to extract android apps from rom would have tried to do it myself. I am really looking forward to the day I will be able to use the beautiful htc Reader in my android HD2 similar to the winmo reader. Thx
Didn't work for me unfortunately.
I'm running this rom at the mo NexusHD2-FRG83_V1.2__Froyo_2.2.1_
I tried replacing all the files first and bluetooth stopped working altogether.
So I restored system.ext22
Then I tried just replacing the system/etc files. That didn't work so I replaced /etc files as well and that didn't work either.
I can't live without stereo music so I guess I'll have to go back to another build.
@playstation the ace dump has been posted here, if you want to try the ereader files. It will be much harder to get them to work as they are probably linked to that sense version and device id.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=787199
@chrisnash it may have been useful to also change the kernel too in your test, eg. to one supporting the sense bluetooth stack, I guess the rom you used will be using something like michyprimas R11 then you needed to change it to the o (sense) version yours would have been the n (nexus) version.Having said that there are probably more changes that may be needed, maybe a plain froyo /cm6 based rom can be built from scratch to support the sense bluetooth drivers.
I; For one am wishing for an updated Froyo (Stock or CM6 only) build.....
(I tried this also with no luck getting BT).....
I am fortunately blessed with patience.......
I am having bt issues on the non sense builds. Bt pairs and connects no issues. Once I try to make a call, it locks up phone and I have to pull the battery. This has benn an ongoing issue with all builds I have tried. Any ideas?

[GUIDE] Changing your bootanimation and delete those ugly sound

*EDITED*
This is very easy now after having the permanent ROOT -- thanks to PAUL for wonderful Visionary+, Evostance for brilliant guide, and those geniuses who make this happened (you know who )
First you need to get permanent root. Here is the link to the guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834427
(If you read till page 10, you will definitely know how to do it and what to expect).
Second, go buy ROOT EXPLORER from the market. (Best explorer for rooted phone period).
Go to /system/customize/resource
Make sure you enable the r/w (read write option), other wise you cant do modification.
You will see both the audio and bootanimation there.
If you hated that sound (just like me), just delete the audio.mp3. If you want to change the bootanimation, just copy your bootnimation.zip to overwrite the default one.
That's all....reboot the phone....and you will have your peace...and enjoy the new bootanimation.
kuailan said:
I am just wondering is the good old way of adb pushing the bootanimation.zip work for HD? I do noticed the stock animation are located in /customize/resource folder in the system ROM. Has anyone try changing the bootanimation? Just hated those sound in bootup (prefer no sound).

firstly i'd like to state, this is development and not Q & A not being mean just stating.
secondly if you had read the ref guide which is pinned to the top you might have got your answer.
finally your answer...
NO
you can not write on the nand with the temp root. no can you adb push.
permanent root is on its way and i believe the nand will be unlocked on that so you may have write permissions. once this has been obtained then you can push a custom boot animation if required.

First of all thank you for the answer (actually I also thought so, and your answer just confirmed that)
And as for posting in develeopment, I DO believe that changing bootanimation is part of Android development (anything that involved creating/modifying and changing of the default system files). Just like recovery or flashing tools, people also develop bootanimation changer application to make life easier for others.
Also I did some search, and this is the first post for any bootanimation for Desire HD. I hope once "root" has been accomplished. People can just use this thread to put the guide to changing those animation.
Therefore I do read and follow the guidelines.

well glad you're a happy bunny
but several things,it isn't development as you were asking a question at time of writing.
secondly themes section deals with bootanimation and things like that. sound can be disabled by just renaming the file i.e. add a .bak after mp3 just for back up purpose or you can delete the file entirely up to the user.
with customs roms, they may be in a different location. i do believe that AOSP builds are located in media where as in sense builds /customize/resource
it can change depending on the developers choice really. thats why when a person releases a theme, it states what rom the user must be using to avoid problems.
anyways there's no need to carry on with that as you have got what you wanted, full root so you can do w.e. you like know
my personal favourite boot animation was the original hero one, but since that doesnt work anymore/havent found 1 that has been converted to work with the new roms, i like "making fro-yo" it just draws a pic of a frozen yoghert and colours it in.
I purchased Bootanimation changer by Andres Schomis a while back when I was still using the original Desire. There are quite a few nice and interesting ones there. My fav so far is the pissing droid (to piss off some of my iphone mate ) and the alienware. I am sure they are also available in this forum (just do a search). There is no option for desire HD yet, but seem like the one that work for Desire also work just fine in HD. To make the app work, you will need to set the custom path. I highly recommend that app for bootanimation.
Somehow I feel this thread should be in the Themes/Apps subforum instead Since it basically has to do with customization. Anyway, thanks a lot for the instructions.

Download me please
I cant figure out whats wrong with it....
I even saved it as store with winrar even tried copying the files inside the HTC stock zip and still same problem
can someone help me please?
Bump any one can help?
Just delete the bootanimation.zip inside the /system/customize/resource
Then just copy your animation to the same path /system/customize/resource.
Make sure your animation is also named bootanimation.zip
For some reason I'm not able to enable the r/w function in the resource folder. The only place I can do it is in the root directory (with system, sdcard etc). Any idea of why this is happening? (my phone is perma-rooted and I have granted Super user permissions).

first I didn't find the bootanimation in system ressource i found it in data/local/
along with the android-audio.mp3
second I tried to change these file it worked but the animation doesn't show up and I have just a small android when I boot up
What can I do ?
PS : my file may be too big 27 megabite for the bootanimation.zip
I tried already, but why whenever I reboot, the bootanimation.zip would revert to the original one?

A500 w/ minimalist 3.2 cannot copy files to read only folders

I'm fairly new to android, and rooting and custom roms and all that i have an a500 with the minimalistic 3.2 rom, and but this has happened with any other custom roms or stock firmwares aswell (all rooted)..
Anyway, ill use this as an example, one time, and I was trying to install the samsung Ebook.apk and it required a separate sytem app, and everyone said move this other app (my files. Apk.) to system / apps and change permissions, I've tried with several file managers and it always says that it is read only,
This happens when trying to move files to other system folders... Isn't rooting supposed to give me access to these and let me edit files or put files there ect
I'm probably just stupid, but but any help would be appreciated

I could not get ES File Explorer to gain root permissions with the Minimalist Rom, but the ADB method worked for me (installing Polaris Office).
I've heard a lot about adb but have never used it.. Ill look it up and see if I can set it up... thanks
use root explorer. Great file manager and gives youba button to mount the filesystem r/w

You need to remount the relevant folders as read/write. Most file explorers can do it. Most people swear by Root Explorer, but that's pay software. I use ES File Manager, which is free.
Thanks a lot but but how do i change permissions with root explorer? I (i am supposed i change them to 644)
