Xperia x8 backup before flashing - XPERIA X8 General

Hello, I´ve search the web but I haven´t found the answer or the way to do it, so I´m posting it here to see if someone can help me. Is there any way to backup the whole phone, so that if something goes wrong by flashing another rom, I can restore it back to the way it was before?
Thanks a lot.

And can i also use xRecovery to flash my phone with the 2.1 rooted firmware that I can get in some threads or do I have to use Bin4ry tool for that? Thanks in advance and sorry if the questions are stupid but it is my first time doing this, so i want to be careful not to break my new phone.

Bit curious myself. To restore a backup with xRecovery on a non-booting phone... wouldn't I first have to go through the whole process of installing/rooting 2.1 to be able to run xRecovery? Or can it run on a rooted 1.6 installation?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I can see, xRecovery is more about running custom roms than it is about restoring a non-booting phone to it's former glory?

to use xRecovery you must have rooted phone first.

Newbie here

Hey guys,
I am new to flashing and rooting and stuff and am needing some help with all this. I'm kinda getting lost in the forums, reading all this stuff I have a stock Vibrant that i want to root and put a Froyo rom on it. I am currently on 2.1 of course. Can anyone kinda guide me through this?
Thanks!
I would suggest starting here:

And here:

Good luck and have fun!
everything is here hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732458 (change xx for tt). read, its good for you
Thanks guys, I'm going to have to read this more carefully apparently. Let me ask this before i do anything to the phone. What backup program should i get if i need to restore it back to stock everything? I want to make sure i have that done before i try any of this. I've done Iphones and stuff, unlocking them and jailbreaking them, those were a piece of cake, but never done a custom rom on an android phone before, nor have i ever rooted one. so im kinda nervous at all this
you should make a nandroid backup, that will be a failsafe but your lifesaver will be odin. when you think you bricked your phone it will rise from the grave. i love odin

Use Odin to get back to Stock. The Bible in the Development thread has the links for Odin download, also the links for the stock android ROMs to odin back to. Make sure you can get into the Download mode before doing anything. Especially using your hardware keys. (to verify that your phone is not hardware locked). If it is you have to install the JI6 to get the hardware key issue fixed.

my noob guide (signature) has videos... you can use your pc (ODIN) and have a rooted 2.2 phone in like 2 minutes!

Hey bud. If you need some visual help, I should have my videos up by tonight and ready for viewing tomorrow morning. I've dubbed it my choose your own samsung vibrant adventure, so hopefully you can see what it looks like and get your questions answered.
thanks guys, the videos are a big help. 2 things that im trying to find is the Odin download and the Nandroid download. Can't seem to find a link for those.
^ the noob guide has a link to download ODIN (and the files needed).
The ALT METHOD listed is Froyo with root already enabled... doesnt get much easier! It's in my signature, or the sticky in the Q&A section.
Also, to clarify, once you use ODIN and flash this (which gives you froyo+root) you can download Rom Manager from the market.... you use it to instal clockwork recovery.... you use clockwork recovery to make a nandroid backup of your system. You can't do this until you have root.
This link should get you to where you can download what you need:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=771111
^ to even make it THAT much easier.... here is the thread that I was referencing (and is in the sticky)

Thanks! I was looking at it and i found this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...ost in all this stuff haha! its alot of info.
^ please read both sticky's in my signature before you proceed. If you read those, this is very straight-forward.
You would need to root and download rom manager
install clockwork recovery
move the .zip to sdcard/ (internal memory)
reboot into recovery
flash the file
reboot
but please read my guide... if it doesnt make it obvious, please let me know what needs to be updated.

...well from what I know, the phone do what ever you tell it to do. So as we deal with files/data/app , if you dont want to lost anything you have to do every thing you did backward.
(if there is a way back, I dont know that shell stufs)
Next time, buck up first
Same problem here (you may find some answers). I do not think you can regain or extract your data with your phone in this condition.
Ok, after I read this I can tell you that it was a busybox problem..
I just flash my SYSTEM do not flash DATA !
Ok ok, many thanks at all, I have reinstalled all system with seus (pc companion can't connect to my phone)...now I made a new root and I have reinstalled busybox and now all work correctly...wow!
The next step will install xrecovery...it will take many luck!
Thanks at allllllllllllllll!

[GUIDE] How to rescue our bricked phone

Some people seem to have trouble with looking for info, so here it is, in noob friendly, convenient way.
There are basically four ways to restore our phone to usability, and usage somewhat depends upon how heavily is your system damaged
1. xRecovery
If our phone does not load the system (so we're stuck at SE logo on boot) and we have xRecovery, we can flash the last working backup. This is as clear as it can be, provided that you need to know something already to install xRecovery.
For those who don't know what it is: it's a boothack, which allows to backup and restore all the data stored on phone memory, install custom zips and do other cunning stuff
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878426 - here's how to install it, enjoy.
2. Flashtool
Flashtool is a software developed for Xperia X10, with later added functionality for our precious X8.
It comes in handy when two things happen: we cannot, for whatever reason, enter xRecovery and we don't want to/cannot use SEUS or PCC.
How to use?
1. Download latest version from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746
2. Download ROM image, whichever you prefer:
X8 Shakira E15i_2.1.1.A.0.6_generic.ftf
X8_1.6_clear.ftf
X8_2.0.2_China.ftf
SE x8_2.1_rus.ftf
3. Download the baseband if you want to flash it (custom ROMs like miniCM or CM7 require baseband ending with "15" in order for app2sd to work):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=976538
4. Place ftf file in /firmwares directory of your flashtool.
5. Install drivers from /drivers directory (if your antivirus doesn't like them, disable the antivirus )
6. Prepare yourself - plug the USB cable to the computer (NOT TO THE DEVICE YET) and launch flasher.
7. Click "flash", choose your ROM from the list, wait for instructions.
8. When the instruction pops up, press and hold "back" button on your X8 and plug the cable into it. Keep holding untill you see that flashing of files has begun, then you may release it.
9. Flashing will take a while, you may observe the progress on a bottom bar. When it's finished you will be asked to plug off your device and reboot it.
10. Tadam! It's functional again! Clean installation which you may screw up again
11. If you wish to change baseband, clean firmware directory in flashtool and place baseband ftf file in it, then go through flashing procedure again.
3. SEUS/PCC flashing
Most probably the most prototipical way to deal with it. PCC is PC Companion, soft that you obtain on your SD card along with your device, or you can download from SE website: http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/support/softwaredownloads/detailed/pccompanion/xperiax10?cc=gb&lc=en
Once downloaded and installed, launch it. Most probably it will download some updates. Then choose device updating and follow the instructions. As for flashing - the procedure with holidng back button is the same as with flashtool.
As PCC is heavy and buggy, we are presented with an alternative - SEUS, the Sony Ericsson Update Service. You may download it here: http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/sup.../detailed/updateservice/xperiax10?cc=gb&lc=en
Once installed and launched, SEUS will start looking for updates. Let it take its time. After a while you will be presented with a board full of phones. Choose your Xperia from the list and continue. You will be asked to flash your phone, analogically as in flashtool in point 2. After flashing is done, SEUS will download the latest SE ROM available for your device and flash it.
ATTENTION
Flashtool, PCC and SEUS will cause loss of data such as contacts, stored messages, installed apps and so on. Anything that exists in phone memory will be erased.
Flashing a backup in xRecovery will cause similar data loss. However, it is possible to flash only system or only data backup in xRecovery. Some ROMs (like miniCM) are updated by update.zip which erases only /system folder, leaving personal data and installed apps intact.
However, you need to be able to enter xRecovery mode in order to use it, SEUS and flashtool do not require enabling the phone. PCC requires the phone to be turned on first in order to recognize it correctly, so it's more update-oriented.
Hope someone will benefit. If you see any mistakes, in spelling, grammar or content, let me know and I will correct it!
haha nice post...
i guess you bricked your phone too much today lol...and decided to write a guide...
really cool.
That is correct, and it took me some time to assamble all the things I needed, especially that SEUS was crashing on update And I really see nothing wrong in making threads that contain all the necessary info in one place, as long as it's mistakes free and helps anyone I've seen similar threads on polish android boards and they help a lot, both people who need such help and board stuff, who don't need to close/combine/delete multiple threads concerning the very same issue.
This is very helpful.. thanks Man..
Do i have to flash the baseband before the ROM?

Nope, you flash ROM first, then then you may change baseband. I'll add this info to the first post

Okay thanks, but is it safe when changing the baseband? I read from the other thread about somekind of lost signal issue?
Sorry i'm a little bit noob about this stuff.
If you open the thread with basebands and the online directory with basebands and kernels you will see that there are files for E15 mobile phone divided into two kinds - E15i and E15a. i is for Europe, a is for USA. If you flash wrong files - 3G won't work.
Or at least that's how I understand that issue
thanks man,,,i bricked my phone.. need this

wow, maybe yes that is a "full" brick. hmm, just try to use flashtool method, that is the last recovery attempt for a bricked x8

[Q] Rooting

Hello,
I didn't really want to root but I'm seeing a few benefits of rooting but I want to know more info about it if possible..
What are the rists of rooting?
By "Bricking" your phone does this explicitly mean that -- It can't be used/UnRecoverable/Dead?
Can Rooting "Brick" the phone, and what are the chances? What would cause the outcome to brick the phone?
Would I be able to root my x8 with the latest firmware from SE? I have never rooted and my phone is completely factory
Firmware: 2.1-update1
Baseband: M76XX-TSNCJOLYM-53404015
Kernal: 2.6.29
Build Number: 2.1.1.A.0.6
A link to the most trustworthy, and known working x8 rooting app for this phone spec would be nice too [if possible]
This is a part from a guide i am writing:
Root - Get admin access
Your x8 runs android, a linux based os.
On many computer operating systems, the superuser, or root, is a special user account used for system administration. When you buy your phone you dont have admin access, so you have to get.
Why?
Many cool apps require user access and also you will be able to have access to the your phone files.
Is it safe for my phone?(virus and other)
After rooting, an app with the name superuser is installed on your phone which controls the admin access and ask you to give your permition every time an app want admin access.
.............................
So about the brick part....
There are 2 kind of bricked...
Full brick and normal brick
Full brick ---> you will need new phone
Normal brick---> Easy to fix
FULL BRICK:
Phone dont open at all, you can come across it only if you play with thinks as bootloader and other like it. You cant get it from root.
NORMAL BRICK:
Yes, you can come across it if you dont follow the instructions. In this stade phone just keep rebooting on sonyericsson boot logo. To fix it just run pc conpanion from pc and make an update to your phone.
The worse case senario is to lose your contacts if you havent made a buck up and spent some time downloading the update....
Yes you can root last firmware update. I recoment you to use one super one click .exe find it somewhere on xda. It is realy good.
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
After ROOT (an other part of my writing guide)
Moving apps an sd (Need Root Access)- I need more space for apps.
x8 with android 2.1 dont provide you enought space for your apps. So you need an apps that moves apps on sd. This sounds easy but its not. I recomend you to download Link2SD from market. Then you will have to make some changes on your sd card.
xRecovery (Need Root Access)- this is the door for customing your phone's firmware.
xRecovery is something like a boot programme. With it you can buck up everythink from your phone to your Sd card, mount sd card for pc connection without having to boot android, install-replace phone's files, install custom roms, make a factory reset and many others
doing root to your phone makes you have access to all, with it you can delete factory app to clear some space, install xrecovery to be able to install costome roms like minicm6 (2.2.1), and or all other things app2sd, etc....

You will make me to post is all...
And there is no way your phone go faster from root...
PS after instaling xrecorery , everytime you charge you phone while you have it turned of, it will open to android... (no ofline charge)
xDD Thanks for you help I downloaded flashtool but the xRecovery option was not clickable and it did pick my phone up. So I will try that way now
Also, I don't know why.. It really has just randomly gotten a lot faster It boots faster -- even after the SE animation the launchers load time and all services are loaded faster.. The animations have gotten smoother too ¬_¬ I don't know why.. but the difference is really noticable!

...first you have to know some things.
There is not rom that fully works with x8, all of them have bugs.
In most cases radio and camera dont work and you get phone reboots some times.
But as all roms are based on android 2.2+, there are a lot faster than stock rom.
Befor you do anything got to xrecovery and make a buck up in your sd. Even is your phone brick after you install rom, but restoring the buck up ,if you manage to get in xrecovery, it can fix brick.
If you have apps and data that you need in your phone , and want to have the in the custom rom, you have to download titianium buck up and buck up them. BUCK UP ONLY APPS THAT YOU HAVE DOWNLOAD, OTHER APPS FROM STOCK FIRMWARE CAN BRICK YOUR PHONE WHEN YOU RETRIVE THEM ON A COSTUM ROM.
All costum roms, need last version of se firmware on phone. So go to setings>about phone>baseband .If the number ends on 15
you have the latest update, else you will have to update your phone.
(I alwase update with pc companion so i dont know about the other programmes)
If you update you will have to root your phone again and install xrecovery again.
After all this you should have last update se version , rooted , with xrecovery and a buck up in the sd card.
Make a buck up here to.... (Copy the other buck up on your pc just in case you need it. It is locaded on sdcard xrecovery> buckups> the first file.)
Now download the rom you want.
Extract it.
If file is an update.zip just put in on your sd,
Open xrecovery and install update zip.
Else is rom are files
Put the folder on sd card on xrecovery>buckups
Open phone and get on xrecovery.
Go to restore a buck up and chose the rom folder.
Then reboot phone and the rom will be installed. The first time to get into rom it takes 1-5 minites. If phone start rebooting (bricked) ,this hapends all the time, restore the last buck up we made and try a different rom.
When the rom work make a buck up whith xrecovery and put the other on yout pc.
After you manage to install rom download titanium buck up if the rom dont have it stock, and retrive your apps and data.
If phone bricked after you retrive your apps, an app must not be compartible with rom, so retrive tbe buck up of the rom from xrecovery.

You can use a backup function on xrecovery to backup your current os.
No, you cant brick your phone fully. You can brick it partially,if you brick it, just flash with SEUS.

[Q] X10 strange problem roms problem

well first of all thanks for your help in advance.
I had a good x10 and decided to sell it and buy a new one because mine is already a bit scratched and other things the former was a X10A and now I have an X10 if that matters somehow.
good considering the x10 in hand I decided to update it first modific to 2.1 with good first non-tariff flashtool restarted. do it again and go for a while whether the network data set, each time an application instalava stuck and restarted.
after that does not solve the problem only 2g sailing. to make root was another problem with me probelam flastool was a play. remove the battery and leave it outside for a while. then again in the place lit if root root but the best was with superclickone.
then install the recovery well to try to install a different rom.
1.7 of laversion install it in my previous trip Experia worked perfectly.
and reboot several times but the biggest mistake was that he recognized me in any froyo memory told me that was not there I thought that was the only rom that fallava but try other froyo and I recon all the phone memory.
the formative and other things and not do anything.
I hope you can help me thanks.
well first of all thank you all for your time
baseband good use the 49 is the one used in the above and it worked well but you're right, maybe because it was for America proves with another 67 or more.
well that was installed with the Sony Ericsson flashtool X10i_2.1.1.A.0.6_CUST GENERIC-TH 1237-0336
root and then install other froyo over several people and doing the problem is restarted as long as I showed the worst memory.
rom froyo good at baseband always use 49 did not try other that could have caused this problem but I do not recognize the memory in the rom do not understand.
But the most curious .. I can restart the telefonoy xrecovery enter a bone having a rom froyo I recognize the memory but when it does not appear but entered the xrecovery if I have it and I can see all of it I install anything but get nothing.
Also if you want to install a backup does not work xrecovery entered the xrecovery give restore Begins choose the copy and paste to work then restarts and I lose everything because the phone does not come over and touch me again with the flashtool.
to light in the rom 2.1 if you recognize me in rom memory but I do not like froyo recognize the memory but still recognize it when I enter the xrecovery and I can see what is memory and install things that are in but when I restart it and entered into the system memory does not recognize me tells me no memory mounted.
thanks for everything
thanks to those who saw this. but I see that nobody has any idea what happens to my x10 was hoping that at xda have some idea but I do not know what happens.
