Force close when switching to front camera - Nexus S General

Hi all,
just got the Nexus S yesterday. I was playing around with the Camera app and as soon as I switch to the front-facing camera the app force closes. It will force close when I try to re-open it (probably because it is trying to open the app with the front-facing camera on). Couldn't get it to work and had to factory reset it so that the app boots from the front camera.
I tried to google it and don't seem to find anyone else with that problem. Have anyone else experienced this?

I can switch to front camera and back without issue.
If you have the problem again, maybe try going to /Settings/Applications/Manage Applications, then ALL, then find the camera and just try clearing data.
That might avoid a factory reset and wipe of the phone. I don't believe this would impact your pictures you've taken, but safe to have a backup first!

Same issue. It's a temporary solution, as the force closes happen once you go into Camera and try to switch to the front facing camera after clearing data.

Thanks for the replies.
So is the issue hardware or software?

i would get it exchanged just because... it isn't supposed to be doing that stock

So, I updated the phone to 2.3.1 and tried to install tango (known for supporting front camera). Tried to video call and front-facing camera won't work.
Problem with exchanging it is that I'm from Canada and bought the phone on Craigslist (I do have the gift receipt though)

It's been discussed in at least one other thread here or the Q/A section...
A few have reported the problem, a few, like me have not experienced it. Not sure what the cause is for those with the issue.
is your phone rooted via superboot?
i have similar experience when i was using the superboot.img
camera app just keep crashing.
once i flash back the original boot.img, it works flawlessly.
No I'm completely stock as of now. Holding off on Modding till there's something worth rooting for. If anyone has a fix for this please let me know. Don't wanna hard reset unless I have to
I have the same problem.
When I change to the frontal camera, it hangs.
My software is factory default.
So, if anyone knows the solution please let me know.
Thanks

[Q] Camera Making Cracking Noise while focussing

I updated my Nexus 4 to Kitkat recently and now I am facing problem while taking pictures.
As soon as an image is captured the camera makes a cracking noise from the backside. Sound is like some switch going on and off "tik tik tik tik"
and then if I minimize the camera app phone can used and camera app can be closed and reopened again.
But if I keep it cracking then within 2 secs the phone freezes and restarts itself.
I tried using other apps like Cymera and I am able to take pictures without any problem.
This problem occurs 50% of the times I use stock camera app. Sometime works fine sometimes hangs up.
How do I get rid of this?
Google support suggested factory reset. I have not rooted my phone. Is there any way I can backup few important apps with their data on PC before I try factory reset?
Thanks in advance!!

I think its caused by camera's focus mechanism and it is just a little click noise but yes sometimes it makes very audible noise, especially with HDR function(which does not focus when you press to focus it just seems green. It only focuses when you move phone or it is just me). Can you check and listen closely if other camera apps doing that click noise when you focus ? I dont think factory reset solve this because I do several factory resets and flashing 4.4 it does not change a thing.
I get that ticking sound as well but only sometimes when I open or close anything that uses the camera, never during focusing. I can't imagine factory reset would help but if you're gonna give it a shot I'd recommend Helium to backup apps https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup though I think you'd need root to backup any system app data.
Problem Solved
Thanks Scrye & AlderCass,
I did factory reset and tried camera it was working fine. Then google started installing my apps and after that was complete I started getting the problem again. So I got skeptical about some app making the stock camera malfunction. I removed an app called cymera and rebooted the phone.
and to my relief it started behaving awesome like before
Feeling happy

Phone does not detect front camera.

I have the same problem, same gionee, I, tried focal app and camera doesn't open.
I erased all app data and cache, made factory reset and nothing. In hardware information app front Camera don't appear. I beg u, Hlp plz
1 Try a few camera apps from play store (if u have kk install google camera app)
2 If every app turns the same problembit could be a hardware issue
3 To be sure of that flash a stock rom and test the camera app.
If by now you re not able to use the front camera you should consider send the phone to repair
thank u

Hi, thanks for the help but none of your steps solved my problem. I show to u a comparison between 2 gionee e life 7
Has anyone solved this issue? I have exactly the same problem. It seems to have happened after I installed the official update. I have tried several roms, cleared cache etc..
i think its must be a hardware issue
i tried and no solution so far. It must be an hardware issue..

Camera auto focus issue

Whenever i open my camera app, the displayed image will not auto focus- it remains blurry no matter how long i allow it to readjust. The only way i can get it to focus is by shaking the phone vigorously- then it instantly auto focuses. Anyone else experience this or other problems focusing?
Has this always happened? Did you just get the phone?
Sent from my SM-N910U
i got it about 2 weeks ago, and i'm not sure if its always been this way- i never messed with the camera until after i rooted & flashed a new rom. But i do notice the problem on 2 separate note 4's, so i'm wondering if this is a rom specific issue or something others have noticed as well
Try using a third party camera app and see if it makes a difference.

Same thing is happening with my wife's Note 4 camera. Tried DL'ing 3rd party apps, and that didn't work. Shaking it vigorously for about a minute did work, but who wants to do that every time you need to take a pic, especially since we have a 1 yr old. Anyone have any luck with settings? I don't want to have to go back and return the phone, if i can help it.
Glad I'm not alone with focusing problems...
Here is my topic : Note 4 camera won't lock focus + blurry edges on pictures with far focus
Best regards,
Chris.
Problem with initial autofocus
I have the same issue with autofocus. When I open my camera is out of focus. When I a shake the camera it goes into autofocus. This has happen every time so far. I just purchased my a note from an ATT store on Dec 19th. I read on another forum a user sent his back to be fixed. They said it was a software update issue. My question is will it be released to every one soon?
Same issue here. 1 week old note 4.
been using my phone for a month and this blurry back camera is happening lately !!! it was ok when I bought it !! really annoying
Wipe off your camera before opening the app. I'm serious. The rear camera has to be clean or it will try to focus on whatever is on the screen in "close up" mode. It even tries to focus in on fingerprints! I'm dead serious. This was bothering me for almost a whole month before I figured it out.
A lot of you may have already messed with settings, etc. So, reset your camera settings to default, close your camera app (completely by clearing it in recently used apps) and then clean your lens and launch the camera app.
Felt like an idiot after struggling with this so long. Now I just know I have to wipe the lens off before launching the app every time.

This does not fix the issue we are experiencing.
Unfortunately, it's a hardware issue and you need a replacement. You can tap the phone on your hand and it will focus correctly for awhile but it needs to be replaced.
Note 4 af issue
Besides shaking, i noticed it needs sufficient light for it to be calibrated properly. And of course this is only temporary. Not sure if there is a fix for this problem. Bummer
i had issue with kitkat but only for a object in movement. It does not focus object. i compared camera with a Xperia Z1 and it seems to be better than note 4.
I've got the same problem when shooting in macro , the problem is gone when i've updated on lollipop.

You have right. I am waiting for new note 4 from Samsung.
Yes ur right. But this problem started after upgrading to lollipop
Hi, I also have this issue. In the past I never got this issue. I am not sure if this happen after upgrade to Lollipop or not.
But I believe it is not hardware problem as it not happen all the time.
I open camera app and it cannot focus for a while, then I exit from camera, and re-open it again immediately, it can focus.
If I lock and left the phone for a while, let say 5 minutes, and open camera again, the issue come back again.
Is this because software issue like the camera app need to prepare something in background before ready to focus (causing lag before focus) and when we put it to sleep( lock the phone and left for a while) then we open it again and it need to prepare again.
My work around is, if I face camera focus lag, I immediately exit camera app (pressing home or back button ) and re-open camera again and it no lag on focus!
Hope this help you.

S8 weird camera problem

Hi guys, I have been dealing with s8 camera problem for months now and decided to ask before I smash my phone into the wall.
Problem looks simple, I start recording and it randomly stops. Its followed by quick flash(the one that you see when switching the camera on) and looks like camera is restarting. It happens after 2,5, 10 seconds or sometimes doesn't happen at all. I recorded a video of my baby and after 20s I found out that recording stopped and I didn't get anything. I tried to use a camera in safe mode, seems to be working fine there.
Does it mean that some apps interfere with camera app? Also tried cleaning the cache which didn't help. Is there a way to find what apps are causing the issue? Is factory reset best option in my case? I would add that I can see those weird flashes even when I'm not recording and camera is simply switched on.
I would appreciate any help guys. Thank you.
Do you try some other camera apk ?

Yes, they worked fine and didn't have any issues. I would like to use an original app tho because I find it much quicker and less complicated. Wonder if it's maybe related to Samsung cloud sync. I'm just too scared to factory reset lol
So you are saying that U never tried to solve the problem by doing a factory reset? That should be second thing on your list, after restarting. xD
