I can't get perm root please please help - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Temp rooted with visionary. Then I downloaded the root.rar files hboot and wpx I plugged my phone in moved them to the sd unplugged phone opened astro and I saw both files on my sd but the folder looked different they were white or something. I pressed on wpx and the hboot and they say "file type ko not found" terminal pretty much said something to that effect when I was entering the second command can someone please help me here I'm desperate.! And one more thing do I have to have adb installed for me to root?

1. Download the root.rar file and unzip it to /sdcard on your device.
2. Run VISIONary to gain temp root.
3a. Start terminal emulator up on your device.(I prefer this method b/c you can see the output.)
a. type "su" + enter to gain root privileges.
b. Type "cd /sdcard/root" + enter.
c. Type "sh root.sh" + enter.
d. Follow the on screen prompts.
---
c. Now wait about 18 to 20 seconds and restart your device
5. Run visionary again with permroot (if its what you want) and reboot again. This will make root stick.
Look here!! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895117
Two things i see that may be your problem. First, you have to be on 2.2.1 Second, After downloading the root.rar you are suppose to extracted it on your pc. It will extract a folder called root. that folder is to be put on the root of your sd card. Then follow the instructions above and all should be peachy.
Also debugging has to be on, fastboot off and check mark set system r/w after root on visionary. Hope it helped.

I'm going to try it now. There is a root folder with three files in it

Yes. dont touch it, just put the whole folder in your root sd. Then follow instructions.

Ugh all it says on terminal is root not found

When I open astro shows the root folder is in the sd so that means its in the root o of the sd correct ? Thank u in advance

Well you can try DL'ing a fresh copy of the root.rar and try it again..?
Here look at this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHrtVzlsA_s

When you open that root folder, does it have another root folder inside it? Like this...

I think you might've missed my question. Notice the red box in my screen shot? See how it has two root folders? i.e. \root\root
I want to pause and not go any further until we have clarification of if you have a "nested" root folder - i.e. a root folder within a root folder.
Keep me posted!

My advice is since it's obvious you don't really know what you're doing; DON'T ROOT.
You have demonstrated here today by not even knowing what folder to put on your SD card and where to put it, that you have no understanding yet about this process.
You seem to be rushing to root. You're just going to end up bricking it and then asking us for help.
If you don't know how to perform a Nandroid backup, or restore a previous ROM backup, flash updates, install custom ROM's, boot into Safe mode, Mount R/W, run shell commands or Terminal Emulator etc, then you should NOT root. You should browse the forums here, read, read and re-read everything until you know it well. Google search related topics. Exhaust all available avenues, then ask questions. After you've executed all of these options you might consider rooting and starting to tinker with your device.
This is not here to offend anyone's sensitivity or hurt your feelings. Many have argued that bricking and recovery is the way they learn. That's fine [for them]. I highly doubt those same people started running before walking, or walking before crawling. But the majority of people need to learn first. Preventing someone from ruining their device is MY best advice.

Agreed 110%. Could not of worded it any better. When i bought my MyTouch3G a while ago i bought it used rooted because i didn't want to brick anything in the process. But since i've learned alot, and still am asking ALOT about various things.
Alot of people think Rooting a phone puts you in the "cool crowd" it doesn't all it does is prove that you know how to read and follow directions.
With that being said like the person said above me, read, read, read, read some more, then take a nap, when you wake up read, read, and read some more.
It took me about 6 months to to finally get up the nerves to even to unroot my phone /the Magic/, then about another 3 to re-root it. just so i would have the experience.
If you are just wanting to Tether, or run SetCPU i would highly advise just temprooting and being happy there.

I just don't get it man I think I'm just doing to listen to the dude above and read some more because for some reason I'm I'm doing something wrong with this root file. This sucks I wanted to get read of all the bloatware and start flashing roms. Thank u so much though for all ur help and everyone else thank u I'm going to read and give out another shot

High-end Android phones are pretty damn awesome by themselves. But there’s always a little magic to be had by rooting. For those that are fearless and throw caution to the wind, hop on inside for the quick and relatively painless list of what you need and how to do it…
Let the rooting begin…
1. Download this file — PC36IMG.zip — and copy it to the root of your SD card.
2. Turn off phone. Then power back on holding the power and volume button. **If the PC36IMG files was placed correctly and you successfully booted into the bootloader, you should see text appearing on the screen as the phone automatically checks said file.
3. At the prompt to install the image(s), select “Yes”.
4. Reboot
5. Delete or rename the PC36IMG file so that it won’t automatically try to install it again the next time you venture into bootloader land.
And that’s that. Not nearly as hard or involved as some of the earlier HTC Android devices. EVO 4G owners should try it out and let us know how it goes.

So rooting like this will still give me SU controls, meaning I can use SetCpu? But still with the stock 2.1 sense?
Question about rooting!
1. How do I get Sprint apps back after rooting (such as Sprint TV, Sprint Nav etc.) or are they part of the ROM?
2. How do I backup my phone before rooting? In case I have to return I am sure I will have to unroot it! Is this possible?

[PROGRAM] Updated:One Click Root/UnRoot (Mac and PC)

Team,
This One-Click Root process will copy over the rooted-update.zip or unroot-update.zip file then reboot your phone. Follow the instructions in the CMD prompt that launches.
Credits:
LeshaK at Samdroid: for the original rooted-update.zip.
gunnarhafdal : for creating the Mac GUI for my app.
This has been tested on stock Android 2.1 Eclair only. If you rooted using another process you can use this process to unroot as long as you didnt load a rom that created links to busybox.
For the following models:
GT-I9000
Captivate SHG-I897
Vibrant SGH-959
GT-I9000M
Epic SPH-D700 (Untested but should work like other phones. Post with your results. This is harmless it will either work or it wont. It copies over 3 files to your existing build.)
Rooting adds the following to your system and unrooting removes them:
/system/xbin/busybox (version 1.17.1)
/system/xbin/su
/system/app/Superuser.apk (version 2.3.1)
and links /system/bin/su to /system/xbin/su
More will follow as they are released. PM me to add your Galaxy S Model.
Warning: I am not responsible for bricked phones, rooting can void your warranty....

Requirements: Install Link: Dot Net Framework version 4
Rooting Instructions:
1. Make sure your phone is on USB Debug mode: (MENU > Settings > Applications > Developement > USB debugging = Checked )
2. For Windows x86 and x64 systems make sure that the Samsung Drivers are installed. You can get them here.
3. Extract the contents of GalaxyS_Vibrant_One-Click_Root.rar to a folder.
4. Connect your phone to your PC via the USB cable and launch the file "T-Mobile Vibrant One-Click Root.exe" file.
5. Click the "One-Click Root" button. This will launch a command shell follow the instructions in the CMD window.
Mac Instructions:
Download the app: here, mirror.
It requires Mac OS X 10.5 or higher.
Rooting Instructions:
1. Make sure your phone is on USB Debug mode: (MENU > Settings > Applications > Developement > USB debugging = Checked )
2. Connect the phone to your computer.
3. Click one of the buttons depending on what you want to do.
4. After the phone has rebooted into recovery select "apply sdcard:update.zip" for I9000 and I9000M and choose "Reinstall Packages" for the US models using the volume keys and then press the home button for I9000 and I9000M and the power button on the right top side for US models to start the process.
=====================================================================
Done! You are rooted.
=====================================================================
Un-Rooting Instructions:
To Un-Root follow the same instructions except click on the Un-root button. If you rooted using another process you can use this process to un-root as long as you didnt load a rom that created links to busybox. I would suggest to restore you phone back to stock ROM before even needing to unroot and if you are on stock un-root all you want otherwise what is the point of un-rooting.

One question since this seems to be a major topic as well, any way you could have it load a generic settings.db file or one click exit to the existing one for non-market apps?
That seems to be giving some people a bit of a headache.

This is awesome, I have been waiting for this!
I am having a problem though, I have gotten to the "press the One Root Button" step. The green shell screen says it can't load the update onto my sd card, so when I re-install packages, it can't find the zip file. It does reboot the phone though and it is set on debug, is there a step I missed? I do have another 8g speed6 sd card I put in the empty slot, could that be messing it up?
Well sounds like your drivers maybe not set up right. go to start then run and open up prompt by typing cmd and see if "adb devices" runs and sees your device.

Ah, I just did it manually. Easy. Thanks for the motivation though.
Awesome work. I'll probably wait for the updated version with the "Unroot" option, but very cool nonetheless!
Here is my settings.db file. Some have speculated that it varies some from phone to phone so may need some testing.
It has been edited to enable non-market apps.
reminder to anyone using someone elses settings.db:
Make note of the android_id in your settings.db before swapping. You'll need it!
I think I am going to leave deploying settings.DB alone.

[GUIDE] How To Install ClockworkMod

This is step by step how to install ClockworkMod (or at least how I did it). I noticed nobody else really had a detailed step by step for noobs...so here you go
I do not take any credit for the development of CWMod. I just take credit for the guide XD
If this does something bad to you or your device it's your fault. I take no responsibility for anything, any damage to you, your property, or anyone.
You will need...
A micro SD card (and a way to get files onto it)
Patience
to be willing to void your warranty
Step 1.
Download ClockworkMod v08 (This version has been found to work best...the newer version causes some issues with some ROMs.)
The file needed is cwmod_v08.zip and can be found at the bottom of this post.
Step 2.
Unzip the downloaded file to your microSD card. Your microSD card should contain a folder called recovery, and a file named update.zip. (This cannot be done using the internal memory with this download.)
(For those wondering, I already updated the file to point to the microSD card rather than the internal storage to reduce the steps needed.)
Step 3.
Turn off your device.
Step 4.
Press the power button and the Volume+ button at the same time and release them when the Viewsonic splash screen pops up. You should see "Detect a recovery key pressed" pop up in the upper left corner of the screen.
Step 5.
Watch it install. Your tablet will reboot when installation is complete.
If you want to get into ClockworkMod you need to shut down your device, then press the Power and Volume+ button (the same way you did to install CWMod).
Vol+ and Vol- are to scroll up and down, the home button selects an option, and the back option backs up.
Many thanks to all the contributors for making this forum kickazz
Good post! It's nice to see all of the contributions people are making to this thread. I know it's a drag but reading these post and then reading them AGAIN has gotten me over my noob fear of totally bricking my unit.
By CAREFULLY reading the forums my machine is now rooted, running TNT lite 2.2, has full Market access, syncs with my exchange server\gmail and hotmail accounts and oh yeah lets me rock out to Angry Birds, watch video or movies and read books on Kindle or FBReader.
Yeah I've gotten the boot loop and most of the other "there is a possibility this could happen" items. Don't panic, set it aside come in and read the forum and you'll learn how to fix it.
I do recommend Clocworkmod it gives you so many options when you bork your system.
Order that I'd follow
Install ClockWorkMod
Clear the CACHE using CWM
Install TNT Lite 2.2
Install Flash 10.1
Perform Market fix
Install Angry Birds
Enjoy
All of these can be discovered in this thread just remember DON'T PANIC help is around the corner.
Great post! Its true, there was no instructions how to this. I had to get the info from the Tegratab forums. Thank you.

ok, flashing clockworkmod isnt working for me. I already have tnt 2.2 installed and titanium backup. apparently i skipped the whole clockworkmod when i got my gtab and got it hooked up. couldnt wait to try tnt 2.2.....
so, i have downloaded the clockworkmod file and unzipped it to my internal storage. when i reboot with power and vol+ i get to a yellow triangle for about 1-2 seconds then it kicks me to the normal boot and loads as normal.
any ideas on how i can get clockworkmod on here?

I had the same issue, I think. But I solved it.
ORIGINALLY (wrong way): I manually put the update.zip file into a folder I created called "recovery."
NOW (right way): I let the zip file extract into my SDCard. This created a folder called "recovery" with a file inside called "command." It also created a SEPARATE file called "update.zip" So it is actually 2 files and one folder.
G-tablet
Sorry i'm not in the loop yet with the tablet, but I've done what I thought was copying then pasting the 2 files, but it looks like its not in the internal root file of the G-tablet as i'm looking at the ES File explorer, when i try from the G-tab to copy then paste it, it says copy failed do i need to do it from my laptop or can i do it from the G-tab and will someone please walk me through it from start to finish, i'm in a pinch here Thanks, anyone ......
Perhaps this will help a bit, feel free to link to this image in other threads where this might be needed. I think I have it correct, let me know if it is wrong. A picture of what you need in order to recover/reflash is maybe worth more than words here.

Easy Temp Root for HTC EVO 4G Shift with Gingerbread 2.3.3

First I need to pay credit to Stuke00 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1185243 for the commands needed for the Temp Root. Now this is a Temp Root not a Perm Root which means if your phone gets shutdown your root will be lost. A Perm Root has been made by Evil_DevNull here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276583 Use this Temp Root if you dont want your phone to always be rooted or if you are trying to downgrade your HBoot.
The process is 4 easy steps.
1. Install SDK Manager to the root of your C:\ drive.
Follow this guide by BrandoKC here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932749 for installing SDK Manager properly.
2. Download these 3 files and place them in your C:\AndroidSDK\platform-tools.
http://downloads.androidsu.com/super...ser3-beta1.apk
http://downloads.androidsu.com/super.../su-3.0-alpha7
http://tinyw.in/1lI
3. Connect phone to computer and make sure you select Charge Only when asked by Connect to PC menu
4. Now download my Temp Root.rar and unpack. Run my Temp Root.bat file and your phone will be Rooted.
Follow step 3 and run my Temp Root Re-Root.bat file for re-rooting your phone if Temp Root is lost.

I'm not using your batch file at all. If you read my post the batch file I have attached is a batch file I wrote myself based off the post for temp rooting based off the ADB commands posted by Stuke00. I just put a link to your post about the perm root that you posted to give you credit for a perm root. Lots of respect for you, I've been following your post for a while now.

Tests confirm, adb isn't fast enought to handle .002sec commands, which is why I put annoying pauses into it. Which is also why Inditect give adb time to catch up as well with his Yes/No request commands. Batch files are from the DOS age, but reliable in its simplest form. However old DOS with current ADB crashes. Which is why you can't call ADB its self.
This script is in all honesty, a fast way to soft brick ANY device.
the OG commands, I.e copy n paste gave adb time to follow thru with the commands and report errors as they come.
My script and batch had to be slowed down (pauses) to provide debugging information.
Indirects script added yes/no pauses to allow again, for adb to keep up.
Batch files are raw, fast and as dumb as it sounds, furious. It's unrelenting to say the least.
By this batch being as raw as it is, and uncontrollable as it is, seems irresponsible for any dev to release.
Please don't take this as an insult but why let others take it 2 steps forward, just to release something that takes 5 steps back.
Just my 15 years of exp worth of 2 cents.

You can't just say "don't take this as an insult" and then post a deliberately insulting picture. Leave dude alone. I think all of your dresses look pretty, okay?
lol... so quick to jump all over someone when the shoes on the other foot... funny thing is it was ok when we had a temp root method, plus a 3 step rollback method, but yet we needed more.... now we have enough though?? what a place this has become
The script wont work right. Thats what its about.

The best guide to rooting and installing roms

[Under construction]
Hello,
Since I see that a lot of people are having trouble with rooting and installing roms, and since their isn’t a guide for everything I decided I’d write thing.
Table of contents
Intros
-I.1: Intro
-I.2 Support list
-l.3 What is rooting?
--Pre rooting:
1.1 Downloading our utils
1.2 Prepare our transformer
--Rooting
2.1 Rooting
--Recovery Installation
3.1 Recovery and roms
3.2 Different roms
--what to do with root
4.1 WTFWR
________________________________________________________________________
I: intro
This guide is presented in the easiest way. If you follow each and every step you should be fine. With that said I cannot be held responsible if you mess up your device in any way
I.2 Support list
This guide is meant to be universal as possible. I can guarantee this will work with original us transformer. I’m not yet sure of the slider, 3g or ww models. Please confirm them working below in the comments. Keep in mind you should always check the support of the rom you want to use by looking at by checking the thread.
l.3 What is rooting?
Rooting a great thing. With it you can install roms, ,make backups and overall great backups. Below is a article on it:
http://www.tomsguide.com/us/Root-Your-Android-Phone,review-1688.html
________________________________________________________________________
1.1 Downloading our utils
STOP: If you have a device running .19 or below use razor claw for rooting. Then, afterwords if you want to install recovery the a rom jump to 3.1 Razorclaw doesn’t require you to have a computer.
Before we begin we will need to get our computer ready to root with nacho root. Head over to
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html

to download the android sdk. Get the zip it’s easier. Once you download it and unzip it. Place the folder in the root of your C: drive (just trust me)
Now double click SDK Manager
Check the box next to “android sdk platform-tools” then click install X packages. Accept any terms that come up. The sdk is now installing. Ignore any errors. Wait till it’s done
Cool, now to get your asus usb drivers. This will help our computer recognize our device. Go to
http://support.asus.com/Download/ModelList.aspx?SLanguage=en&keyword=eee pad&type=1
Select your device, The for the OS dropdown box choose “OTHERS” Then hit the plus next to “UTILITIES (1)”. Under that click Global (DLM). Wait till it downloads then install it.
Finally to get our rooting software. We will be using nacho root from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1427838&page=1
Download Nacho root and SU
Pic 6
Go back to your android SDK folder we download earlier. Put both of the files in the “Platform-tools”
Pic 7
1.2: prepare our transformer.
Go into the settings. On the left click application. Make sure “Unknown sources” Is checked. Then click development. Make sure “Usb debugging” is checked.
2.1 rooting. It is rooting time. Make sure your device has a good charge on it. Then hook it up to your computer.
Go to your computer and open cmd by hitting the start button then typing in cmd. In the windows type in:
Cd C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools
Make sure you have the space between cd and C: If an error returns you didn’t follow the tutorial and put the folder in the correct path. If that is case use the right path.
Pic 8
Hit enter.
Now type in:
Adb devices
A random string of number should appear, if not your don’t have your asus usb drivers installed correctly.
Here is the instruction for you to type in to root from the dev. Do it one line at a time. Do not type in any of the <wait for boot> things.
Code:
adb push nachoroot.bin /data/local/
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/nachoroot.bin
adb shell /data/local/nachoroot.bin --stage1
adb reboot
<wait for boot>
adb shell /data/local/nachoroot.bin --stage2
adb reboot
<wait for boot>
adb shell id
<if id is 0 / root then continue, else start over>
adb remount
adb push su /system/xbin/su
adb shell chown 0.0 /system/xbin/su
adb shell chmod 06755 /system/xbin/su
adb shell /data/local/nachoroot.bin --undo
adb reboot
If you did it right an your device didn’t turn into an ipad you should be ok. Go to the market. Get super user. If all goes well you have root.
STOP: Now if you don’t want to install recovery and get a rom (which I HIGHLY recommend) this concludes the end of the tutorial. Feel free to view the information after the recovery and rom section.
3.1 Recovery Installation and roms.
THIS REQUIRES A MICRO SD CARD
If you are here you must want to get recovery, install a rom, and make your tf 1000% times better.
To begin go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346180
Get the app either on your computer OR your transformer. Install it, and click the giant button. Let it do it’s thing. Now you have recovery, which allows you to install roms.
Time to boot in recovery. Get this app:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1173434
and click the oversized button to boot into recovery. (Yes you can do the other method by turning of your tf and holding both power button and bottom volume at the same time then clicking vol up when you see text, but that requires more then one finger.
There you go. You’ll see a recovery screen.
NOW pay careful attention. Once you are there we need to make a backup. Use your vol keys to scroll down to “Backup and restore”. Select it with the power key. Now make a backup by clicking backup (With the vol and power keys from now on obviously). Now you have a backup. To install a rom simply get the rom from the xda section (check comp. and don’t get nflash) and put it on your micro sd card. Boot into recovery. Scroll down to “install zip from sd card”. Then choose zip from sd card. Find the rom you put on the micro sd card. It should install. If this was to difficult view this kind man’s vid tutorial:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWdfce9wBjs&feature=related
May be wondering what rom you should pick. I recommend revolver, because the dev is offering me a large some of many to say that (Just kidding ). But really revolver is great.
Others include:
Prime
Revolution
And many more at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1107.
I wonder why there has been no one at least thanking you for your effort in writing this reference,
However i followed your instructions and have been successfully able to root my Transformer,
Thank you very much
keep it up

No, for ICS on the prime there is another method. I thought the name is mempodroid.

My answer is NO. I just push to ICS 4.0.3 and it does not work on ICS.
